- • Electric + Hydraulic =... - Homemade Electric Wheelbarrow
In today's video, we will show you how to make a hydraulic kit that will be used in the video where we will build an electric vehicle to transport various loads. Link above.
In order for the starter to be used as a motor, I had to lock the axle in one place so that it would not slide out.
Then I made a mounting from the sleeve so that the starter could drive the pump.
When both elements were joined together, I started working on the hydraulic oil tank. I used a large square tube and flat bars for this, which saved a lot of work.
The next step was to connect all the hydraulics and conduct a test.
In the video we showed how much force this set has when crushing various things, but in fact, it will be used to lift the loading box in an electric vehicle. - Věda a technologie
Hi Guys.
A lot of you write about the continuous work of this set, but I haven't mentioned it anywhere. This will be used in a cycle of 10 seconds on, 5 minutes off, so no worries.
Some of you may ask "why didn't you buy a hydraulic power pack on ebay?"
It is because I wanted to see if it is possible to make such a set and if it will work, and learn more about power hydraulics :)
Only problem you have with this setup is that car starters are nor meant to work for very long time -but still its a nice build well done!
Very cool indeed
@@zumbazumba1 And also the starter use many ampere..
@@zumbazumba1 the same thing was running through my mind when I started watching the video. I have the same starter motor, a few years ago I wanted to make a belt grinder from it, but everyone suggested otherwise. These motors are not designed to run for a long time, so they have no ventilation and cooling system. The motor will eventually heat up and the winding will burn.
@@zumbazumba1 true but... for the time it takes to bend and do its job its perfectly fine i know a man who built an elevator with a car starter and still running after 46 years :) car starter pulley and voila!! an elevator! if you running it all the time 100% duty cycle it gonna overheat and eat the carbon brush:) intermittent use is ok
I bought a second-hand 4 tonne excavator for my farm last month and have been learning how hydraulics work as well so I can service it myself, which is why I instantly knew what you were doing with the oil reservoir! It's absolutely incredible to me the amount of power such small pumps and motors can produce.

Really??? What about the guys who designed the same system for snow plows and other electric hydraulic gear using the exact same motors and pumps.. like DECADES ago??
@@MrSwimmster Right???....they used "Old Starter Motors" from vehicles and a lathe to do so...LOL!
That home made pump works very well. Good job. Time to make a log splitter for your ram assembly.👍
here, a safety valve is also needed to avoid overload at idle and a damper between the hydraulic pump and the engine, since this pump has no bearings, and the aluminum bushings quickly break if the drive is poorly aligned with the pump. And this electric motor will burn out, since it is not designed for long-term operation.

I agree with what others have said about having a switch activate the pump when the lever is moved, would simplify things a bit.
Also, you should incorporate a pressure relief valve. This will prevent stalling of the pump and motor when situations arise that could do so, such as when the ram hits end of travel, or load is too high for the system.
@01:08 Wow, never thought of disassembling a starter drive that way, what a neat trick! 😍

Indeed
Great design. I would like to recommend that you make it so the motor turns on as you push the lever in either direction. This could prevent the early wear and tear on the starter motor.
Agreed. A starter is designed for minimal use on purpose.
Grande Polonia!!!!con quattro elementi hai fatto una cosa straordinaria!!!! bravo e Basta!!

*Great build!* As the build progressed I kept thinking it wouldn't take much to connect this to a ram set, a hydraulic work bench, or even a heavy duty
floor jack with a modified lifting mechanism like the great modifications you made on the small bottle jack. Lot of possibilities. *Good stuff today.*

The one improvement I would add in adding a directional switch the the control valve so that when you move in or out the pump will start up. Though I think if you had a electronic control valve it would work a bit better. Either way super awesome build. I use to have one of those 12v pump and I was stupid and sold it cause someone needed it. I could have made a bunch of cool things with it.

Can't wait to see part 2!
Beautiful work.
There is a DC electric pump drive on delivery trucks that have a hydraulic ramp at the back for unloading at street level. I managed to get one from a truck that was being scrapped. It has a pump with a much smaller displacement though.
Put 2 motor switches on the diverter control to turn it on when you push forward or back; neutral being off.
.
Don't forget starter motors have a very tiny duty cycle. When loaded, they can only be used 30 seconds after what they need then to be switched off to cool down.
That was what I was thinking. I had an old Jeep that the starter got stuck on with and ignition short it took like min or two before it was melting down. He might get away with it if its for a pipe bender and only runs when the lever is pushed.
Depends on the load too
@@regsparkes6507 not sure but the cheap brushes they put in starters will wear out faster if used as a running motor .was built as a short run device , wiper motor might work better in this idea ..there built to keep running all the time just my thought ..
@@randytravis3998 Well after a bit of looking thru the comments I saw where he was asked " How long can you run it?" He responded with "about 30 to 60 sec" So he is well aware of it's limitations and probably has that figured in to its use.
@@regsparkes6507 the problem with starter motors is they have insufficient cooling. They are closed to protect them from water and corrosion, but because of this the only cooling they have is the mass of material which can absorb the heat. If you use it as a starter it will cool down until you need it the next time, it's not usable for a longer time however without getting hot.

you're lucky to live in a country that has all those tools
@GMT {FS} that's not true, you'd have to order from abroad, pay expensive shipping and duty costs. not worth it for the hobbyist.
and for people that don't know, duty tax is based on the cost of the shipping plus the cost of and insurance of what you ordered.
it gets very expensive to import things.

Awesome build my friend you are talented and knowledgeable. Would like to know how well the motor holds up. I wouldn’t imagine it was engineered for running an extended amount of time being a car starter
i agree. Short duty cycle. High current. It will overheat without some cooling.
Also the current should be pretty high even without load, stressing the power supply.
Like the setup but be interested to know in how long the starter will last and under how much load it cooks the brushes or solenoid, only as i have never had much luck using them for projects like this as they tend to burn out due to large amp draw.
It is actually people like yourself who make others think outside the box so thanks :)
Most automotive starters have what is called a 5 and 5 duty cycle. It simply means that you can run for a maximum of 5 seconds and then 5 seconds off. If you extend the run time to say 10 seconds and the cool time left at 5 seconds, it would last significantly shorter and it would still burn out prematurely against normal usage. This is due to the fact that these motors have no provision for cooling. If you were to place the motor in a container that would hold dry ice, the cooling effect would make the motor last much longer.
id say the batteries will have to be replaced before the starter unless constantly on charge
Impress your adaptability and build these amazing engines with simple materials, congratulations!
i am not so confident on the longevity of the starter motor but other than that its a supercool project and nicely executed good job dude
