  • Massad Ayoob has years of experience in the courtroom as an expert witness. He offers his unique perspective into the Ahmaud Arbery case in Georgia. Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan had extremely problematic issues with how they handled the situation that day. Massad warns gun owners not to be the initial aggressor. Mas says "The totality of the circumstances, motive and rational, all those things come together and have to for those who carry firearms"
Reflections on the Kyle Rittenhouse Trial

Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.
    ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

I still remember two distinct things my TBI firearms instructor told us in a carry class. Just because you are armed doesn’t make you the police. You can use your weapon in your defense or the defense of loved ones or innocents but otherwise stay out of the conflict. The other thing was if you instigated a fight, you cannot use your weapon even if the fight starts to go bad for you. Anti gunners don’t understand that we leave the house armed, the very last thing we want is to get into a conflict. No bird flipping, no yelling and cussing. Since we are armed the results could be fatal. In that respect we are the safest people in the country.

A few months ago, a man who was seen on numerous home surveillance cameras in my neighborhood, and a known burglar, walked by my house at dusk, while I was watering my front yard. I called law enforcement, and they caught him a few hours later. My neighbor gave me a hard time, and asked me why I didn't shoot him.

Right! The men had so much to say to the police. In particular the older man who told police that he td AA to stop or he would blow his fucking head off.
Ironically the older man was quite as a church mouse during the trial.

I can’t speak for a living in a rural area but I can definitely say something about living in a big city. carrying a weapon doesn’t make you Bat Masterson in the service of king Arthur’s court, the weapon you carry is only to protect you and yours that’s it nobody else!!! you see a store being robbed you call 911, you come across a woman being beat up by her boyfriend you call 911, you see somebody getting carjacked you call 911, you see a group of people get into a gun fight you run like hell and call 911, the neighbors are playing loud music you call 911, you’re on the road and someone is having road rage you call 911, anything that resembles a confrontation you make sure to be the first to call 911!!!!
anytime anyone wants to have an argument with you for any reason you put your head down and walk away as you’re calling 911!!!! whenever you want to go out with the boys and have a few drinks then guess what, your weapon is not invited to the party! sorry, if something goes down and you have liquor in your system then your lawyer is going to be talking about plea deals. and get that crazy idea out of your head that you could use your weapon to defend your property; we no longer live in the days of hanging horse thieves. the only time you pull your weapon is if you are in total fear of death or “severe”bodily harm!!! someone slapping you it’s not death or “severe” bodily harm, someone pushing you to the ground is not death or “severe” bodily harm did you notice the word “severe”? In closing if you choose to carry a weapon then you better keep your mouth shut and mind your own damn business!!!!

So I am a former NCAA 800 Meter All American runner. (Call me jogger if you wish) In the 1980s in winter time, home from college at Christmas, I would trained on roads and hills in a countryside in New York State called Rotterdam. I was never stopped or profiled in the many dozens of training runs I did on public roads in the 1980s as a young man if partial African American descent. Fast forward to year 2017. Now a California resident, I went back home to my old Rotterdam neighborhood and did a nostalgic jog on my old training route. Yup, you guessed it someone called the Rotterdam police on me! and the what seemed like the entire Rotterdam police responded. Whoever called the police on me couldn’t entirely steal my joy of reuniting with my old training grounds tho. I also discovered why I lost the national championship by a mere 0.16 seconds: The long, “gigantic” hills I trained on were not as steep and not as long as I had imagined. 🤣

I hope you will refer to things that many of us already know. I find the Law of Self Defense rules easy to understand. Innocence is the first of these rules, but a concept that might be a little less firm is regaining innocence. On our bad days, we all have the potential for calling out stupidity. Preventing a possible charge for a related fight or regaining our right to self defense may mean apologizing and withdrawing from the conflict. Also, be the first to call the police.
