- čas přidán 28. 06. 2024
- Massad Ayoob has years of experience in the courtroom as an expert witness. He offers his unique perspective into the Ahmaud Arbery case in Georgia. Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan had extremely problematic issues with how they handled the situation that day. Massad warns gun owners not to be the initial aggressor. Mas says "The totality of the circumstances, motive and rational, all those things come together and have to for those who carry firearms"

Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.
ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

If one man should be a professor of gun education it's Massad. Much respect for this man
Massad Ayoob & Jeff Cooper, and Elmer Keith, The Three Men I admire most.
And Dan Johnson, of Guns & Ammo....
He is.
Massad's books are excellent too👍
Why cause he was a pig?
This man is a National Treasure. A knowledge fountain, and just a well rounded, intelligent individual. This man gets, and rightfully deserves, a lot of respect. Perfectly articulate and concise.
I still remember two distinct things my TBI firearms instructor told us in a carry class. Just because you are armed doesn’t make you the police. You can use your weapon in your defense or the defense of loved ones or innocents but otherwise stay out of the conflict. The other thing was if you instigated a fight, you cannot use your weapon even if the fight starts to go bad for you. Anti gunners don’t understand that we leave the house armed, the very last thing we want is to get into a conflict. No bird flipping, no yelling and cussing. Since we are armed the results could be fatal. In that respect we are the safest people in the country.
Those of us with a sense of ethical and lawful responsibility, anyhow. Can’t say the same for every person who leaves the house with a pistol tucked into their waistband.
This is how I interpret "An armed society is a polite society".
@Bruce Day, I just had this discussion with a friend. But in the end, you must wisely and tactically judge each situation on its urgency and its merits.
An armed society is a polite society…. Mostly
I agree. Same thing happened to me when I was carrying back in the day.
Mr Polite.
I often change my opinion about stories like this after listening to Massad calmly and clearly bring reason, logic and facts to his well written presentation. Grateful.
He really does do an EXTREMELY good job of giving an unbiased view of what exactly happened.
I am proud to call Massad Ayoob friend,
My late Father really admired him as do I.
Massad Ayoobs books are an important read for anyone defending themselves against attack.
A great education.
**"In the gravest extreme."**
If You wish to avoid Prison time.
Thats why we dont take what the media says as fact
That's the first book I read when I started to carry!
As far as people like Aubrey... this was an unfortunate event... but I still believe we have to do something about these idiots... the law is broken and not effective anymore! When feckless people allow our society to be overrun by criminals we have to do something 😒
@@carminemurray6624 The Truth About Self Protection is another really good one, I'd maybe have Mas update both though.
If you take on the responsibility to carry a gun. You must do everything in your power to not get in a fight. It is an absolute last resort to pull that firearm.
Rittenhouse did not do everything to avoid a fight.
@@reubenmorris487 he tried running in the opposite direction that’s about the most you can do
I absolutely Agree!!
@@reubenmorris487 THE video I watched he was running away from a MOB yelling KILL HIM. Wat video did u watch??
@@reubenmorris487 He ran away from his attackers but was chased down by men faster than him.
A few months ago, a man who was seen on numerous home surveillance cameras in my neighborhood, and a known burglar, walked by my house at dusk, while I was watering my front yard. I called law enforcement, and they caught him a few hours later. My neighbor gave me a hard time, and asked me why I didn't shoot him.
Let law enforcement do their job. It took dozens of officers, dogs, and helicopters to get the guy.
Sean Omeirs - you did exactly the right thing. You can't use deadly force unless you (or some innocent) are at imminent risk of serious bodily injury or death. If you shot someone for being a *suspect* in burglary - the you would certainly face murder charges. M.Ayoobs other vids cover this.
@@stevealexander8010 Thanks. I'm shocked at the behavior of neighbors, who are otherwise good neighbors, when they think that they can take the law into their own hands. This guy was carrying an AK at his side when he walked past me. I don't know if he knew I was was there, but he didn't threaten me. I don't want a bunch of drunk LARPers, sending bullets into the neighborhood. There are a lot of new gun owners who haven't thought about the responsibility of using their weapons without the proper training and mindset. It's taken me 45 years to know what I know, and there is always more that I am willing to learn.
@@seanomeirs8362 I think it's partly ignorance. Ppl haven't really thought about it. Of course the time to think is BEFORE you act foolishly. I learned some in a concealed carry course & some online matter, but Ayood has a great vid where he discusses 'Black's law, and it's meaning.
@@seanomeirs8362 what was the man's crime?
@@zoticus1 He wad identified on many home security cameras committing burglaries, and he hadn't harmed anyone physically. He had however stolen firearms, and he was carrying an AK, when he walked past my house at night.
As a gun owner, thank you for taking the time to clearly and concisely analyze these cases. Very intelligent and in language everyone can understand.
Don’t be the aggressor, but be wise, people will lie and falsely accuse you.
Yes, particularly the DA who wants to throw the rest of your life away so he can run for higher office. The DA in the Rittenhouse trial is a crooked liar, as we all saw.
ESPECIALLY the kinds of people you might have to defend yourself or others from. There's damn good reasons that the cops are the way they are. And they still manage, most of the time, to be reasonably courteous to citizens who offer courtesy in return.
Brilliant and insightful analysis as always! It should be required viewing in all self-defense classes!
I started reading Massad's articles in magazines and books back in 1978 when I was 14. I learned so much over those formative years from him and Jeff Cooper. Thanks for everything over the years.
Thanks for sharing!
Jeff Cooper's blatant racism disgraced himself, and even worse, disgraced The Corps. Marines are supposed to be better. Even in his day.
Thank you Mr. Ayoob. It's a blessing to hear a sane voice.
I remember hearing about this case when it was in the news but I was not aware of all of the facts (the racially changed social media posts, the comment about shooting the deceased's head off etc). Thank you for filling in some of those blanks.
Even though I didn't know EVERYTHING about the case back then I still knew it was foolish to grab a weapon and chase someone down over property crimes. As you said, don't be the aggressor, just call the authorities and let them handle it.
"Don't Be The Agressor"....simpler and truer words have seldom, if ever, been spoken.
When I read Massads book where he described the Zimmerman case in Sanford FL I was amazed how much of the story was hidden from the public.
Okay, now I want to read that book. I knew that Zimmerman was assassinated by the liberal media but learning what Mas had to say would be great.
No surprise there, really.
The wonderfully 'objective' media in this country typically only show the juicy parts of a given video.. to rile up and turn the public against each other while boosting the ratings of the media at the same time.
Rodney King, anyone? Mas has spoken about that incident as well.
@@nmr6988 Remember they made Zimmerman out to be white in his pictures and during coverage of the story. The media targets whites and convinces non-whites to target whites also.
What's the book called?
@@azure8696 Deadly Force, Understanding Your Right to Self Defense
If the fight comes to you, defend you and yours, don’t chase down a fight.
Spoken like a true licker of boot. The law is laughable in this regard and should be ignored, repealed and never enforced again. This is no different than waiting for the police to come and save you. Avoid what you can, finish what you can. This consistent need for self defense advocates wanting to walk a legal tightrope is getting fucking retarded.
You should have this talk with 90% of law enforcement officers. The love to escalate situations thinking that they are superior to the citizens
He wont. He’s an ex-cop and will defend them as they all defend each other in the face of crimes and cruelty.
American police are really just the sixth family of the Mafia.
Except that LEOs literally do have legal authority that non-LEOs don’t.
Another l ibtard.
Just to remind people of what Massad means when he says "serving very long sentences". The McMichael's Father and son Duo are both doing life with no parole in a Georgia state penitentiary. Roddie Bryan has a life sentence that he has to do a minimum of 30 years on. He is 52. They are done.
The racist bastards should have got the death penalty.
They never should have been charged, but given citizens of the year.
They should have simply called it in
My biggest issue is that Arbery tried to take the shotgun away and was much bigger trying to take a shotgun away from a man is stupid and he can't say that he feared for his life this happened in daylight in a neighborhood surrounded by houses but the jury had to convict them or they would have had death threats. And Police officers are not out to kill black people if they were they wouldn't do it while on video and regardless of race resisting arrest will get you more trouble.
@@jsr-uz3oj If the convicted felon druggie who got caught stealing had got it's paws on a gun, the 3 white Christian men would have been murdered in cold blood.
Thank you Massad, your knowledge of these matters helps all of us do the right thing.
Dear Mr. Ayoob
Your book " In the gravest extreme" is a must read for any firearm owner. Thank you sir. The advice contained is the gold standard of self defense. 🛡️
Thank you for recommending his book. I am definitely going to purchase it now.
Back when I was training new carriers, I wouldn't sit down with them unless they'd read "In The Gravest Extreme". Just wouldn't begin, that book raises questions about why, and the beginning of the sit down we had to start talking about why. NOT What ifs
@@nmr6988 Get it while you still can, I'd lent several, they don't seem to come back.
@@ScrappyXGC I will take your advice!
You're helping people so much, thanks!
Almost all Hollywood shows, that have guns, will have someone point a gun at someone else for almost no reason. It has to stop. People think that's ok, but then they go to prison.
Hollywood is super toxic and anti gun.
Video games ?
@@patrickbly4170 I really don't think video games harm people.
But I hate it when Hollywood shows people casually pointing guns at people for the stupidest reasons, like it's not super illegal or threatening or wrong in every way. Then the other person acts like it was no big deal.
I knew of a guy who went to jail for many years for firing a warning shot, even though he should have shot the predatory person.
Video games do have a harmful impact. The innocent video games most illude to are called simulators by our military. Used for training. They definitely affect the minds of some youth.
@@jhask64 Those youth are damaged by bad culture or upbringing or genetics.
They're the type who can't handle heavy metal, rap, r rated movies, stories, rejection from a girl, etc.
I've played violent video games where you can do whatever you want, they're not bad.
Blaming the games is weak and it shirks responsibility, and what's the solution? Ban them? That makes things worse.
Hey Mas- I can't wait for your take on the Uvalde shooting,
He's not going to touch that subject with a bargepole. Police failed to do their jobs. Simple as that.
I remember this incident. Wise words from a VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE MAN
Thank you Mas for being a voice of reason and clarity on a very complex and emotional topic.
I'm so glad I found this channel. Clear, detailed, complete explanations. Thank you
Excellent layout as usual. I've been reading your article voraciously for decades. This is a case in what you absolutely SHOULD NOT do in any similar circumstances.
Thanks for sharing!
I have taken multiple classes. The majority have been retired law enforcement. Among the common points stressed.(especially CCW class) if you use deadly force.and it turns out you misread the situation. You are probably going to have even more serious legal problems.than if it's a clear self defense.which can easily get complicated and change your life forever.
Another line a retired police officer used. "If you are carrying for personal protection. Keep the ego in check."don't look or act like a predator as well"
Like Rittenhouse did. He was out looking for trouble and found it.
Sounds like the law is the problem and it should change. Drastically.
Thank you for another great lesson
Glad you liked it!
Very well explained and articulated sir. I’d like to suggest an analysis of the Kyle Carruth/Chad Read shooting.
The man was murdered this isn’t the Wild West anymore this whole castle doctrine stand your ground crap needs to be reined in👍
Yes, a special grand jury chose not to indict, but to me Mr. Carruth (even if not guilty of murder/manslaughter due to subsequent actions of Chad Read) committed, at a minimum assault or disturbing the peace etc... and was not justified in shooting Mr. Read in my opinion.
@@wheelguns4wheelmen802 Mr Carruth is exactly the kind of person that shouldn’t be allowed to own firearms. Small man syndrome feels like a tough guy with a firearm 👶😈
Alternatively, Mr. Read should not have closed the distance and provoked an armed person. Most reasonable people would not challenge someone that is rightfully on their property, and you were asked to leave. I think Mr. Carruth was justified once Mr. Read closed the distance. It showed that they were dealing with an unreasonable, even crazy, individual. Either way, sad loss of life that didn't need to be.
@@JK-co4lz he was trying to pick up his kid 👦 the crazy one was the little 😿that went and got a rifle and shot him simp ,you gun nuts are unbelievable 👎.
Always a treat to hear you sir. 🙏
One is bound to be all the wiser if Massad’s videos are watched and watched again.. so much wisdom and knowledge flows from him.
Thank you so much for this video and all the others.
I want to take a second and thank you for your insight and sharing what you've learned. I find it very sound, and valuable instruction. You're making me a much safer firearms handler. Thank you.
I continue to be impressed by this series that WC sponsors. Especially when it comes to dissecting the legalities, ramifications, and usage of firearms in actual events. Don't be the aggressor is a very fitting title and takeaway for this tragic, and very preventable event. Sounds like Mr. Ayoob has plenty of material for a Volume II to "In The Gravest Extreme", which is prominently placed on my bookshelf.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the things you say can oftentimes get you into more trouble than what you do.
Right! The men had so much to say to the police. In particular the older man who told police that he td AA to stop or he would blow his fucking head off.
Ironically the older man was quite as a church mouse during the trial.
One of the best channels on CZcams. Appreciate the education.
Thanks for stating so clearly what people need to understand.
Wise insights, as we expect from Mas.
Thank you for sharing the most valuable thing on the planet. Knowledge.💪
Your analysis is spot on. I'd like to hear more of your analysis of shootings like this when they happen.
Great job sorting things out here; any loss of life is regrettable but we also have to acknowledge differences in circumstances. These are great reminders to think through actions before we take them.
As always thank you for your perspective.
Thanks for listening
That was an excellent assignment and put it in terms that I could understand.

I can’t speak for a living in a rural area but I can definitely say something about living in a big city. carrying a weapon doesn’t make you Bat Masterson in the service of king Arthur’s court, the weapon you carry is only to protect you and yours that’s it nobody else!!! you see a store being robbed you call 911, you come across a woman being beat up by her boyfriend you call 911, you see somebody getting carjacked you call 911, you see a group of people get into a gun fight you run like hell and call 911, the neighbors are playing loud music you call 911, you’re on the road and someone is having road rage you call 911, anything that resembles a confrontation you make sure to be the first to call 911!!!!
anytime anyone wants to have an argument with you for any reason you put your head down and walk away as you’re calling 911!!!! whenever you want to go out with the boys and have a few drinks then guess what, your weapon is not invited to the party! sorry, if something goes down and you have liquor in your system then your lawyer is going to be talking about plea deals. and get that crazy idea out of your head that you could use your weapon to defend your property; we no longer live in the days of hanging horse thieves. the only time you pull your weapon is if you are in total fear of death or “severe”bodily harm!!! someone slapping you it’s not death or “severe” bodily harm, someone pushing you to the ground is not death or “severe” bodily harm did you notice the word “severe”? In closing if you choose to carry a weapon then you better keep your mouth shut and mind your own damn business!!!!
Excellent dialogue. Filled in the blanks.
Excellent research- thanks! Keep em coming

Than Mas for explaining the shooting and the trial verdict.
So I am a former NCAA 800 Meter All American runner. (Call me jogger if you wish) In the 1980s in winter time, home from college at Christmas, I would trained on roads and hills in a countryside in New York State called Rotterdam. I was never stopped or profiled in the many dozens of training runs I did on public roads in the 1980s as a young man if partial African American descent. Fast forward to year 2017. Now a California resident, I went back home to my old Rotterdam neighborhood and did a nostalgic jog on my old training route. Yup, you guessed it someone called the Rotterdam police on me! and the what seemed like the entire Rotterdam police responded. Whoever called the police on me couldn’t entirely steal my joy of reuniting with my old training grounds tho. I also discovered why I lost the national championship by a mere 0.16 seconds: The long, “gigantic” hills I trained on were not as steep and not as long as I had imagined. 🤣
Another great video Mas. We are definitely living in interesting times. Y'all keep up the good work.
We will
thank you very much.

My brain had simply glossed over the original pursuit as having an error. You have brought a thankful clarity to the event.

Thank you for this educational video. I hope it will contribute to helping people make good decisions.
I hope you will refer to things that many of us already know. I find the Law of Self Defense rules easy to understand. Innocence is the first of these rules, but a concept that might be a little less firm is regaining innocence. On our bad days, we all have the potential for calling out stupidity. Preventing a possible charge for a related fight or regaining our right to self defense may mean apologizing and withdrawing from the conflict. Also, be the first to call the police.
