i think the internet as a whole has forgotten what gatekeeping is, honestly. MGK should've done his research on the subculture & genre he was basing his song off of, but either chose not to or assumed his idea of it was right when it doesn't relate to most of us at all. i have no idea what the tiktok comments look like, but the emos i've seen on insta who commented on it didn't even say he *can't* be emo - the issue they took with it was being misrepresented, like anyone else in any subculture would.
to those who think emos overreacted, think of it this way: what if MGK made a song that was supposed to be based on Metallica, but instead of having any references to metal in the song, it was just him saying "i'm in love with a metalhead" repeatedly over and over top of pop instrumentals?
Think of it more like this, not a song about emo for emo, but a song about a person that finds Emo style sexy by someone who identifies as a person who currently loves dressing up in emo style and seeing people in it, even thought they aren’t emo.
There are real Emos, then are people that are only just attracted to emo style.

If you stray outside the box, your change, and they don’t like change. Not to mention, he is emo or emotional. He has been since he’s been doing hip hop music.
