    The trick to growing duckweed, is hoping it doesnt grow

    I have duckweed in my 40-gal. long tank. I have a lot of filter agitation from an airstone, under gravel filter, two hang on the back filters and a sponge filter. I have an aquaponic platform that kind of divides the two sides of the aquarium. It is where the most water agitation is and the planter kind of confines the water movement there. There is not much duckweed on that end. This is good because it leave a nice area to feed my fish. The other end has plenty of air-powered agitation as well but I think the key to my duckweed propagation is that I also have a floating bushy seaweed on that end. I don't know what the plant name is but it is a very bushy floating plant and it is doing well and even spreading into the other side. This bushy floater I think is the key to my duckweed success as it breaks up and buffers the water agitation so that the duckweed can grow. I started out with only a small amount of duckweed that hitchhiked in with my plants. The guy at the aquarium show warned me about it but I said I wanted to grow it anyway. for a while it seemed to not be doing much but as it multiplies it grow exponentially and once it gets going it is like machine production. It is supposed to make a very nutrient-filled ingredient for making your own homemade fish food. I have dipped it out once already and put it in one of my small tanks but it seems to be losing ground slowly there so I will try to add the other floating plant over there and see if the symbiotic relationship works over there as well. Just my observation but it seems the two plants help each other as they both seem to be growing well. The end result is I can harvest lots of duckweed to dry for fish food.

    I am happy to discover this channel, I think some algorithm suggested you because I researched duckweed, which I have thriving in my tanks, ...so much that I ended up eating it, putting it in morning smoothies as I learned how much good stuff it has for people, lol , it felt weird the first time, but it's nice to have the aquarium give back to you , not just visual and psychological rewards but also a super food.

    I use plant rings float on the surface & attached with suction cups where I need them around the hang on the back, keeps floating plants away from the agitation.. sorted

    I love your tanks, they all look awesome. I want to start a tank and have lots of plant life. I was thinking of starting small with a 10 gallon tank, get about 10 neon tetras (I was originally thinking guppies but I don't want to get overran with babies) and add duckweed and guppy grass. I will use a small sponge filter and natural coloured gravel. What do you think, any other recommendations? Thanks for the content.

    I noticed that the surface agitation on one of the tanks had a good amount of flow going pushing them as well; I do have a HOB filter, but I also you plant rings to help keep them in check and close together with less agitation

    I prefer amazon frogbit, it doesn't die off with surface agitation. red root floaters look good in thick clumps at the top, kind of disappointed with their roots on mine. I wish I could block duckweed off more, it finds a way into everything

    Take excess out, squeeze the water out, blend, dry out and use for snail food and for chucking in for plant fertiliser when it breaks down

    I just put the duckweed plants I bought. But my aquarium has too much surface agitation. I don't think they will last because of that.

    Bro, I just stocked my livestock tank {turtle} pond with duckweed that I collected from the always-running irrigation water flume that runs thru my property. It’s got miles and miles of ducked AND surface agitation. The most important thing for duckweed is lighting…

    The way you talk about duckweed is the way I talk about gay same-sex dating. If you don't like it you haven't tried it, may get dirty, you can get a lot of it really quickly, it's super easy, please turn down the flow, not so fast. Helps everything look better although a lot of people find it super annoying. 😅

    I dont know if you know the answer to this but I’d love your opinion - I have some bamboos growing in water (no aquarium), do you think I would be able to grow duckweed or another aquatic plant/floating plant with the bamboos?

      I've seen it growing in videos, using those special plant holders that clip on the rim of the tank. Lots of types online. Edit- sorry, that was not your question lol.

    hey palmer, i noticed one of your water heaters was near the surface? why is that? doesnt heat rise?

    • @johnwilkerson9804
      @johnwilkerson9804 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Liquids act different than gasses. A heater anywhere will do the job because liquid will basically sync up with the stability of the heater temperature. It is best or so I've been told, to have it near the filter so it doesn't have to work as hard to maintain the temperature because it's in the water flow. It just makes the heater last longer.
