    Good discussion. One of the biggest downsides to trying to copy other artists output is that you won't be doing what you would do if left to your own devices. Do what you like! The actual process will be way more fun :)

    Awesome video, Lukasz and Axel. I think this was a good idea to cover and think deeply about. Sometimes I catch my self instead of gaining inspiration from other people's work I end up comparing my work to theirs. I also find my self getting bored with the echo chamber of photography I see very often. I personally shoot what most people would consider very boring, I photograph suburban architecture, houses, strip malls, but at the end of the day it's what I like to shoot and I do it for me. To me it's important to document the human experience and part of that experience is the mundanity of life. Sometimes, for me, I find it helps to get off of social media for a little while and just go out and shoot. Or even take a smaller camera and just take "touristy" photos to clear the mind.

    • @EYExplore

      I feel 100% the same way! We should all be a little selfish and create our art first for ourselves and second for others. Having said that, the happiness our work brings people is very gratifying in itself. :)

    Really agree with your views on photography not be competitive. I’m not interested in competitions or camera clubs (as there is a strong emphasis on competitions). I do street photography for a number of reasons one of which is an expressing myself. If people like my photos too, then that’s a bonus

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Yeah, that certainly doesn't help. This is a major reason why social media is so toxic. I try to focus on the 'social' aspect of social media. Meaning, I use it to talk to my friends in similar creative spaces. I like meeting people and getting to know them. I avoid following giant accounts of anyone remotely famous who I know I have zero chance of ever actually interacting with. :)

    Thanks for the reminder, I feel like I'm in need of those, especially around this time of year in Scandinavia. The dark has a tendency to empower any demons on your shoulder. That reframing of jealousy into inspiration really feels key, much aided by the practice of mindfulness which you've mentioned before, to actually catch yourself in the act, as it were. Lately, I've been trying to keep away from Instagram and CZcams(and even my own pics) when I notice my mind being a bit...fragile. I believe it's like a muscle that you practice, that reframing and refocusing, and, like a muscle, it needs maintenance. There is no, "There! I'm now impervious!".
    Love the video, those low-angle shots Axel pulled in the 小路 were on point. Real nice balance between shooting and reflection/waxing philosophic, I found.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Oh yeah, winter for sure affects my mood. I must be a plant because I really like sunlight haha. Good point: mindfulness helps to catch the train of negative thoughts. And also, it is indeed a muscle. I've gotten quite strong but never impervious. There are dark days now and then. It helps knowing that after each dark episode, there is always optimism to follow. I always knows the darkness will pass. :)

    I think it's funny how so often the videography of these kinds of videos capture amazing shots that the photographer misses. No disrespect to the photographer! It's pure happenstance most of the time but I wonder if you ever see your videos and think "man I wish I got that shot!"

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 5 měsíci

      Oh yeah totally!! Plus, Axel, the guy shooting the video is a great street photographer so he knows what he's doing haha. That's in fact what I love about working with him. He frames me like I'm in a street photo. And yes, there is also tons of stuff going on in the background that I'm missing, but this is happening to all photographers all the time everywhere except that it's not usually caught on video. I don't really worry about it. :)

    Hello. I like your video. In my case I kept using photography for many things like to create digital copies of my art work. I use photography to create covers for my audio recordings. I use photography to create covers for my books. I just published a book of my photography work. I'm also working on another book project. Photography has opened doors for me. If I had listened to negative comments in the past I would not have kept going. I would have quitted photography a long time ago. I create my way. I create in my style. I'm building, and creating different things. I never wanted to be like everyone else. Someone called me a compulsive photographer once. I was building my world, and they took offence at my creativity. Photography has opened doors for me. It's a great form of art.

    This video is a must see. You make great points, but many people including myself end up falling back onto unhealthy values created mostly by social media. I have started two IG accounts and ended up shutting both down due to bad vibes. Both times I felt the quality of my images decreasing as I try to appease others, instead of staying true to my values. By the way, at 20:59 Axel moved to an angle that would have made a nice, gritty, urban scene, with the two colored stripes and the metal gates.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Yeah! Part of my motivation for making this video was to have a mantra for myself. Once I get these thoughts out they become more real, easier to recall and keep at the forefront. An interesting subject - for sure! I think a lot of this comes from a feeling of insecurity, which is something most of the people deal with. I guess it is a part of being a human. When it comes to art it can be quite intense. I do like your conclusion though - that really it is not a competition, at least on a higher, or deeper, or personal level. But to translate this to an everyday life, one needs to really define who she/he is and that is not an easy task. And then one needs to stick with too, which also might to be challenging.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I totally agree. I alluded to this, and maybe I should have gone into it, but so much own experience with art is a metaphor for living life as well. Finding our authentic values is the major hurdle of a life well lived. :)

    Hey, how do you change the shutter from 1/50 to 1/500 so fast?
    Had an experience with old style dslr bodies long time ago and i kinda liked the top screen with all the settings and different modes, which saved your settings.
    I'm a fuji user now and i have to fiddle with these "retro" dials all the time. And sometimes it bothers me.
    So lets say, i'm shooting on a sunny day and my shutter is at 1/1000. Then I'm going down into the underground passage full of people and i see a lonely guy just sitting there near the wall. So i want to capture a wave of massive crowd at a long shutter and this lonely person still. And i have to basically turn the whole dial to the t, adjust with the back wheel to the 1,5", or 2", adjust my aperture and finess the iso. By the time i do it the guy just happens to be moving or gone. Then i pack the camera and forget about it till evening. Then again, I see an interesting moment in the night, i put out my camera, ready to shoot and realise that my aperture is at f fucking 11, and ss is 2 secs.
    Oh maan...

      To change the shutter speed I just turn the command dial on the front of the camera with my index finger, from 1/50 to 1/500 it's 10 clicks on the dial, so not very far. However, sometimes (not this time) I shoot in Aperture mode with a min shutter speed setting, but keep the Manual mode set to 1/50. So, just by flipping from A to M I got from a fast shutter to a slow shutter. This would work well in your example. I've also mapped the mode button the right side of the camera, so I can do it all with one hand if needed. Also, I pretty much always leave ISO on auto. As for packing the camera... I always put my settings back to 'fast' settings...I do this constantly, even walking on the street. The camera needs to be ready atall times.
      I really don't like the retro dials myself. Anytime I have to move my hands out of the shooting position is a huge distraction. It's why I stayed with my D4 for so long. The big body SLRs have excellent ergonomics and button layouts. The Z9 carries that torch wonderfully.

      Thank you so much!! I think I cover that in this video: czcams.com/video/nGswIrIlXRs/video.htmlsi=Vt69qx4Q9500E_IP
      But in short, I always used the Auto-area AF and then I hit OK and use the subject tracking selector to track individual subjects. :)

    First of all, something a bit different in the video quality of this post - in a good way. Seems like improved resolution, perhaps, but definitely distinct. Thoughtful subject - to thine own self be true. Thing is that our values can change over time as we are influenced by others (without outright copying). We might, for instance, value graphic design over story telling in a photo.
    Competitions, IMO, result in stagnation, to extent that the same kind of images come out on top consistently. Diversity and originality lose out, if that makes sense. A genre becomes homogeneous - like some kinds of street photos.
    Cool mesh photos and “alley” shots.
    When was this vid filmed? Cheers!

      hmmm, I dunno, it's all the same gear/process, but maybe the color grade just turned out a bit better this time. I always color grade them a bit differently each time. Value can certainly change, but that change should be unnoticeable. Something that feels like it comes from within, even if ultimately does not. But when it's an acute change, brought on by a sudden exposure to something external... well that might be okay, but I think it can lead to unnecessary anguish. I totally agree the competition leads to stagnation. It certainly punishes risk taking. This was filmed in September. :)

    You need to do more videos. You already have 33k subs. If you did weekly or biweekly vids you’d hit 100k easy.

      I didn’t mean this as a competition btw 😂. You’re channel should be bigger and if you put out more regular content it would be bigger.

      I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe me, I see the wasted potential here, but there are just 24 hours in the day and I already work 7 days a week on all kinds of stuff. I also became a dad 2 months ago.... But, anyway, it's okay. We're going at the pace that is possible given our life circumstances. :)

    Hi Lukas, just came back to Nikon after a long break. Do the new Z cameras have the same problem discovered with the metering system? Still going average?

    • @christopherrodriguez7223
      @christopherrodriguez7223 Před 7 měsíci

      Never mind, looking at the settings, I see that may still be the case.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 6 měsíci

      I'm extremely happy with the metering. I use Average because it ignores the focus point. Matrix Metering puts some weight to the focus point, which I don't like. But the accuracy of the metering in either mode is excellent!

    I don't know if jealousy is really the right word, but I can relate to this. For me, it's more of asking myself, "is this worth the time?" Especially when every moment these days needs to go towards trying to earn money with all the debts and inflation. I can't even bring myself to spend time on art anymore without thinking about time, age, purpose, and future goals. Now with AI image generators, people aren't going to care about art as much as they used to. I wouldn't be surprised if the art community as a whole is feeling an identity crisis.

    • @iDipTest
      @iDipTest Před 6 měsíci

      Another way to look at it : Art is crafted by an Human who took time to do it and applied he's skill on it too. Which mean it took time and dedication to craft the Art .. Which is not alike a 1 click to get a result based on a base of pictures/images.
      Personaly i prefer to see it alike this if i compare it to the fashion industry : AI = Fast Fashion and Photography/Art = Haute Couture 😃
      Maybe that's just me but i really hope this will evolve that way

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  Před 6 měsíci +2

      That's a different thing but certainly related. I think they both stem from self-doubt. Also sometimes question the value of my work in bigger picture: life, family, society, etc. But really, everything is pointless in the long term if you really think about it like that. The sun is gonna explode and it will all be for nothing... but it won't be, because it's not about the destination but the journey. As for AI, I am 1000000% emboldened in my art by the advent of generative AI. All this kayfabe art just makes images created from reality that much more previous. :)
