Yeah, but you know I live here... so the storefronts are kinda been there done that. I was hoping for more action shots of people doing things. That's what I usually go for. But it was kinda quiet on this afternoon. :)
The crow on the Wild One sign is art, even if just standing there instead of flying.

It reminds me when I went to Japan in 1998, I bought my point and shoot film camera and lots of 5 film rolls packs, and I was always carrying like 5 rolls of film everywhere I went. Everyday I spent like 2 rolls of films shooting, and the best part is that only on the second week I was there I took my films to develop and see the results, it was nothing like today, when you just take a picture and you can preview on your camera display, and can download to your computer and retouch it and publish on the same day. And the only pictures I didn't like were some that I took from fireworks at night, and some that I took inside the museum in Hiroshima, where I could not use the flash. At that time you could buy photographic films on vending machines near touristic attractions.
The good old days! When I was a kid my dad had a film camera that we used on trips. It was much as you describe! :)
Great video and shots. My camera arrived today and I'll be shooting the streets of London with it soon. I love the look and feel of the camera and I'm getting used to its quirks like the blue light functions. I learned a lot from this video so thanks so much for posting it!

I received your book Tokyo Unseen for a present after some not so subtle hints. It is a beautiful book and I only look at a few pages a day. I think 2 of my favorite images are Regular and Fedora. They make me want to be sitting there enjoying the atmosphere.

You cannot focus it in the P mode. It becomes a fixed focus hyperfocal camera. Even if you think you are changing focus by turning the focus dial. The focus is changed electronically when you push the shutter button, not mechanically.
Oh really? So what does the dial do? Also, it's not what Ricoh told me, but the release was kinda rushed so I might have been misinformed. What you say makes sense though because every close focus shot I took was out of focus, even when I chose close up zones in the dial. I thought maybe I was just off each time.
It sucks because it did not come with a detailed manual in the box, just a quick start guide. I would have liked to learned more about the camera to being with.
@@EYExplore The focus dial works in the other two modes, just not in the Auto mode. Pentax messed it up because the Auto mode is actually a full program mode - so that is the one that should have been named P! The other two modes are Auto modes - one that uses the flash, the other that does not.
If the focus dial mechanically actuated the focus, it would work in all modes. But if you pay attention you can see that it is electronic and only adjusts the focus after you press the shutter button. This must be because they will use the same system in an upcoming AF camera.
Even the detailed owner's manual is lacking - it just mentions what is adjustable in the different modes so it is easy to miss that in Auto they do not mention focus.

This camera is an interesting âin-betweenâ. I didnât expect them to release a half-frame camera with zone-focus, especially because itâs kinda marketed towards beginners if i remember correctly.
nevertheless, great to see a new film camera being released by none other than Pentax/Ricoh!

I think it would be interesting to see this cam be used as the purpose its intended for, or at least most commonly seen used, to do double shots (the two shots relating somehow to each other) and have it as a 35mm scan of both. Perfect example woould be pairing the guy in black with the guy in white 18:55

Though, claiming that a tool for creating art is 'meant' to be used one way or another... I don't agree with that. Everyone should use their tools how they please. :)
I haven't used a film camera for about 20 years. I can't really remember how much rolls of film cost but looking at the prices today, they seem more expensive relatively speaking than back then?
When you were framing the shot of the chef up against the window, I was thinking "I hope he remembered the parallax error!"
They're definitely expensive. I wouldn't use a film camera as an all-purpose tool. It's just for special occasions. Yeah, the viewfinder actually has two sets of frame lines, one for distant and one for close subjects. I was not so close though that the lens was blocked by the red thing. Anyway, I wasn't patient enough for the chef to turn around... I should have waited a bit more. :)

Nice vid and an interesting camera. I took the Cyberpunk night workshop in Tokyo and had a great time! Some of my best street photography from my trip to Japan came from that evening so highly recommend.

I find zone focus is quite easy with half frame, and nice photos, I think overall the film could have been shot at 200 instead of 400.
Yeah, the camera has a compensation dial so could have easily shot it at +1, but same thing I guess.
I have about 50 rolls of film in my fridge crisper. 35mm, 127, 120, APS.
Some than less than a year old - some maybe 10.
Maybe 8 rolls Kodak Advantix b&w.
Though some call this a p&s camera - you STILL have to know the cameraâs capabilities.đ
You have be conscious of how many frames have been used - you canât SPRAY sounds like you can with a digital camera.
People make way too much about the ASMR about the advance lever and shutter sounds.
Yeah, totally. I don't think I made a big deal about the sounds, but I do like them. It's nice! Like popping bubble wrap lol. ;)
I'm curious about how Pentax set the camera program. We all knew that:
Aperture: F3.5 - F16
Shutter: 4s - 1/350s
1. When set to no flash P mode, when it is in low light, will it limit the shutter at 1/30s and warn you it is insufficient light, or it will go all the way down to 4s?
2. When set to Bokeh mode, using ISO 400 film under sunny day, will it shoot at F3.5 with 1/350s, or it will shoot at F16 with 1/350s?
3. When set to no flash Night mode, will it always prioritize shutter to 4s? or any range?
I wish I knew. I wish the camera came with a more in-depth manual that explains all this stuff. That's pretty much my only gripe with it. ;)
I was over in Minowa today shooting in the old shopping arcade there with my Olympus Trip 35. For the kind of shooting I was doing the Pentax 17 would have been perfect. More control than the Olympus over exposure but still super simple for quick snapping. I blew through a roll of film in a couple of hours wishing I had a half frame so I could shoot more! I enjoy the zone focusing for that kind of photo walk and would sure make use of the closer focusing abilities of the Pentax if I had it. I went over to Bic Camera Ikebukuro to ask when the Pentax will go on sale and they werenât sure yet. I canât wait to try one! Thanks for the fun video.
Glad to hear that! Yeah, the Minowa shopping arcade is a fun place to explore. It's changed so much over the years. I think the camera is already a bit hard to find but online might your best bet. :)

I stop shooting film in 2012. Starting watching CZcams vids on photography around 2018. Was going to grab one of my old cameras and shoot some film during Covid, saw the price of batteries and film and said NOPE!! I'm digital forever going forward!

After watching this, I feel a lot better about my Olympus E-PM1.

Spot on use based recitation of film camera differences, compromises, and pluses. Key points covered. For landscape shots hold cam in portrait orientation đ- nice. Half-frame cams used to be the rage at one time. Didnât Olympus make one too? Film advance throw was shorter than full frame, enabling faster sequence shots.
I thought 400 ISO should have been OK for night photography.
How does film dynamic range compare w/your digital GR3? Is there a waist level finder attachment available?

Yeah, there are definitely other half-frame cameras out there! The dynamic range was not as good as GR3, but maybe it's the film or just how I shot it. I feel I could have set compensation to +1 for all shots to saturate the colors a bit more, but this is of course the learning curve of film, to which I am basically new. :)
Red light district definitely more fun at night haha. I would like to get a roll of Cinestill 800 and use that at night. Should be great!
Two missed opportunities: 17:44 and 26:05. Whenever I watch your vids, I have this habit of scanning for good shots too. :) Anyway, pleasant surprise, I wasn't expecting you'd review the 17. (Though you're a Ricoh guy, so...) I am in the camp that approves of this camera for its intended "role" in the photography community.
Hehe nice! I dunno if I'd have shot the colorful lady at 17:44 even if I saw her. She was just no her phone and pulling luggage. I usually ignore such subjects. I'd rather have a typical looking person but DOING something interesting. To me, actions are more powerful than fashion. :)
And I do hope this camera inspires more people to shoot film. It has worked its magic on me! It's just very easy to get started and makes it all more accessible.

I'd love to have a play with this, and just really experiment with extreme intentionality as an approach to working a scene. Maybe with black and white, because I'm not a fan of crazy white balances. đ
I believe negative film wants to be shot at ~+1 on the exposure comp most of the time, so it would be really interesting to come at it from the opposite of what I'm usually doing in digital to preserve detail.
Letting P mode do it's thing and finding 3m focus compositions seems like a unique challenge too. The other day I set the GR to f6.3, 1/320, and 2.5m, just to try and look for scenes that fit the parameters more than adapt. Just being able to put my mental energy somewhere else changed the images I was going for.
I will definitely give black and white film a shot eventually! I think we will enjoy that even more for the same reason you state, the colors are kinda all over the place. And yeah, on a cloudy day for sure I should have had it on +1 the whole time. And yeah, I really like the 3.5m zone of my GR3x. :)
I'm only at the 1st image and for 400 iso i was shocked when i zoomed in at just how much grain/noise is in the image compared to a digital at the same iso. I don't not like it though btw and have actually started to embrace noisy images especially in low light environments, now lets continue with the video đ
Finished and really enjoyed this one, i have a late 70s polaroid and an Agfa clack i want to try out for some general daytime street photography and this video has given me the motivation to go through with it
Yeah, I was also shocked hahah. I do like the look. And of course, it depends on the film, and perhaps there would be less noise if I exposed it more. I think the images are generally underexposed, that's the main issue. Glad you enjoyed the video! :)

I learned on film many years ago, starting with a Pentax K2000, then a Minolta SR-T 101. (A friend's father gave me pretty much unlimited use of his.) I think you're looking at film the wrong way. Limiting yourself because of the number of shots available is the wrong method. Just bring more film. Back when film was all there was, a pro photographer shooting a model was happy to get 1 keeper out of a roll of 24; 2 keepers was fantastic! My first real shoot (in 1971, at the age of 14) was at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, and I think I went through 3 rolls of 36 during the Changing of the Guard- which is about 15 minutes long. I discarded dozens of shots, but the keepers won me a prize at my first photo competition. (Could be they were rolls of 24- it was a long time ago!)
Also, the half-frame seems silly to my. It seems an answer in search of a question. Why half frame? just to get double the film? Seems silly. Bring more film. It doesn't take more than 30 seconds to rewind and change rolls. Developing cost? These days, the cost of a good film camera is 1/10 the price of a digital, so you can develop a LOT of film, and still have spent less than a full-frame digital.
Get yourself a real film camera, like a Nikon F3 (or, because your a digital guy a Nikon F100, the second-best film camera ever made) about 4 rolls of film, and go out and shoot with abandon: you'll find it's just as satisfying as any digital, and the shots will be just as good. In fact, it can be better: film grain, light, and having a fixed ASA (what is now called ISO) can make for some amazing looks.
I'll never get rid of my Canon digital gear, but when I want to go out and have some real fun, I still reach for the F100, the F3, even the K2000, day or night.

Sadly, the cost of the roll + developing/scanning ends up being about 5,000 yen, or a really nice sushi dinner... Or in other words 50 rolls of film = a decent digital camera. Even with half frame that's 3600 shots.... I do that in a month on my digital camera EASILY. I get what you're saying about pros in the 70s, but in 2024 film is a luxury. If want to shoot more I'll just use my digital camera which can shoot infinite photos for whatever the camera costs.
Even if you take my Z9, which cost me a ridiculous 630,000 yen brand new, that's only a 126 rolls of film (using the rough 5,000 per roll figure including dev/scan), times 36 that's about 4500 frames.... literally a month or so of shooting for me haha. 4 rolls as you suggest is 20,000 yen... 10% of my rent lol... And this is all assuming I'm using cheap-ass film that costs about 2,500 yen a roll. Some stocks are 5,000 a roll just for the film. "Shoot with abandon" ...yeah right. :)
Basically, film is a fun and pricey diversion. If you're rich and can afford all this, that's great! Hats off to you, sir! But for me, it's never gonna happen. And I do know some great film photographers here in Tokyo, and for them it's very much a labor of love. I'd rather just shoot an occasional roll with my stingy mentality on my little half frame camera that doubles the fun for the same money and spend my cash on other stuff. :)
I just found a roll of 400 VC literally an hour ago, probably well over 10 years since I've shot this type of film. gonna load now in the F6 :)

It's just a little generic messenger bag from a company called Squallo Works.
The shots are probably a bit underexposed (and the scans muddy) because the film is old. Rating colour neg film slower than the number printed on the box is normal (400 rated as 200 etc).

Shooting film on an overcast day is so so hard, you did a good job considering the conditions!
Have you considered a cheap 35mm point and shoot? Theyâre really fun, especially in conditions like this theyâll produce as good or better results imo.
Yeah I was so disappointment. I was really hoping for a nice sunny afternoon (like the day before) but at least it wasn't pouring rain (which happened on the next day). I do have a 35mm film camera, a Yashica Electro 35. I've been meaning to use it on the channel for years but always put it off. The Pentax 17 inspired me though, so the next film video will be with the Yashica (assuming it still works after being in my closet for 8 years).

Yes! But it's really like training for your feet. Walking on concrete for 5-8 hours gets my hooves really tired and I feel it the next day. But I do think they are getting stronger! :)

@@EYExplorewait whaaat? I have switched to barefoot shoes exactly a year ago and it has been a game changer for me. It took a few weeks to build up the muscles but now I can walk all day and my feet would feel worn out a little like I did a little workout but the ankles and joints would never hurt (like they used to). And recovery time is faster for me now. And it Is a nice experience feeling the ground while walking with a camera. More Zazen đ
@@SamuelStreetlife Yeah, I love them overall, but still getting used to them. The balls of my feet are usually really sore the next day, but they recover super fast, like by the evening. It's weird. I do feel like I have more 'power' in my step too. Overall, they're great shoes! :)
Should have upped the ISO a stop on that old film and maybe gone 1.5 to 2 over on the sky stuff. Film can handle highlights very well as far as over exposure, it is the opposite of digital for shadows and highlights. I have seen prints in the years past where the sky was there in the negative and the lab blew it out in the print. Bad prints from labs were an increasing problem in the 80's and 90's drove me into slides.
It would drive me nuts not knowing the shutter speed, I can live with an unknown aperture, even though I would like to know it. It is a point and shoot, so, unknowns are to be expected. Crap disposables use constant small f-stops and lousy fixed shutter speeds for equally lousy results.
I get it, it keeps things cheap, but still it sucks.
If they had made a camera with a bit more manual possibilities they would have gotten my money for sure. But they are targeting someone else.

Yes, I think my overall impression is that just keeping it on +1 comp would be ideal, especially on a cloudy day like this. Yeah, I do feel that's one missing feature: knowing the shutter speed. Even if I can't control it at least being aware of the range of shutter speeds it can do would be helpful. But I do think this is a toe in the water and they are planning to release a more fleshed out older brother to this camera, probably a full frame version. Glad you enjoyed the video! :)

I'm glad you like the shots! You sound very 'anti' digital, haha. That's cool, but I can enjoy both, and digital is far more versatile (and less expensive) so there is no way I will switch over to film mainly. It's cool and fun to experiment with but the cost is just too extreme. For example, this roll of film costs over 2000 yen, and then development/scanning is another 3000-4000. And this is cheap film! So, it ends up being something like 5000 per roll... ouch. That's a REALLY nice sushi dinner in Tokyo haha. :)
I love the camera, sadly I didnât get an email from Ricoh . I been shooting film again now for 2 years and I started shooting half frame in April, half frame is a bucket of fun, 72 shots takes forever to shoot.
Yeah, we did a roll of 72 in the video for the Pentax channel.... I didn't actually finish the roll during our shoot lol, I had a few left over and shot them on the way to the lab, mostly on the train. :)
I do own an Olympus Pen half frame camera. 72 photos on a roll of film is a luxury.,đ

This is exactly why I shoot film and will never go back to digital. Digital is simple while shooting film is complex. You canât just shoot 2000 shots hoping for that one shot with a film camera. You actually need to be selective
Yeah, but shooting digital I don't shoot 2000 shots and hope for a good one lol. That would be an idiotic strategy. Digital allows more 'play' which is very important for learning and exploring concepts. If I had only used film for the past 15 years I would have learned much less (and I would be broke lol). So for me, the constraints of film are interesting but not practical. I'll definitely shoot a few more rolls with this camera though, but most likely ONLY for the purpose of creating video content for our channel. :)
I think with cameras it is a case of horses for courses. I have several different ones and use them in different situations. My only problem being which camera to take when. This includes film and digital. But some times digital is too digital for my liking and I much prefer the images I get from film. Of course this, quite often depends on the type of film itself. On the cost of film it is not that more expensive than it ever was, bearing in mind inflation, and although I don't follow this rule myself you can just get film developed, printed and you have the negatives as storage... without the added cost of needing a computer or upgrading it and its software etc... not to mention updating a ÂŁ1000, or whatever currency it is, camera every three years or so. Apart from the P17 the old film cameras don't change the either work or don't and if you get a reliable one then there is no need for another. But as I said I don't follow this but it is possible just as it was before digital cameras came along. After all most great photographers were taking photos using film.
Now that you've seen the photos what do you think about how they turned out? Many looked underexposed to me and the overall quality no different than the basic point and shoot 35mm film cameras such as the Kodak Ektar.
Was going to make the same point. This is why I usually bring out my "crappy" film point and shoots on overcast days. At least then I can blame the camera for a bad shot haha, but in general itâs too annoying / frustrating to compensate in conditions like this.
Looking at other reviews though, even under ideal conditions this doesnât render better than any average plastic point and shoot. Personally donât see any reason to spend $800 aud on this thing, itâs not like the ergonomics are much better either.
I dunno, they seemed well exposed overall. Could it be the film I used? I'm really not expert on film shooting at all so I have no idea how to remedy the situation. But I like the overall look of the photos. I could have set the compensation to +1 I supposed. For the one shot I did of the street, the +1 shot is noticeably more vibrant. Anyway, I've never used an Ektar so cannot speak for it. All I can say is that the camera felt good in my hands and I enjoyed using it. :)
â@@EYExploreIf the film was 8 years expired like you think then it would've benefitted from rating the film at ISO 200 or adding +1 exposure comp for every shot, maybe even +2 to account for the overcast day. I've never had great luck with expired film personally.

I realize that they're mostly in different classes from each other, but how would you say the 17 compares to, say, a good used Japanese K1000, or even the later Chinese-made K1000s? The 17 just strikes me as too hipsterish to be taken seriously. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but it just strikes me that way.
Hmmm, I'm not familiar with those cameras. I'm not sure what makes a camera hipsterish or not haha. I think we should all use whatever camera (film or digital) that makes us happy and not worry about how it's perceived by others. :)
On 5:40 Can someone explain to me which photo is better? Unfortunately, I don't see any significant difference between 0 or +1.
Slight difference in tint
Yeah, it's very subtle huh.... and the video compression youtube doesn't help. Basically, the colors are a bit more saturated in the +1 version. And the blacks are also a bit richer with more detail. I hope that helps! :)
The negatives will look different. +2 would probably have been âcorrectâ exposure around the street.
Does the camera not have an exposure lock upon half-press of the shutter?

Zone focus is really forgiving when there's a lot of light, but when there isn't... Many of these shots reminded me of my Olympus Trip - which I love very much, mind you
Yeah, I felt the same. But I use to shoot my Voigtlander 40mm f/2 wide open in a 4m zone and got pretty good at nailing it. Of course, on a digital camera mistakes are more forgiving and you 'calibrate' yourself in the moment but getting instant feedback. :)
@@EYExplore film cameras with limited resources and zone focus have this thing that you have to know them well before start nailing focus. BTW, it seemed like a great little camera and you had fun playing with it

Man, i really thought this could be something for me. Relatively small, fixed lens ... but somehow the quality doesn't quite convince me. The pictures never seem to be really that sharp and don't even come close to a Leica Minilux or Contax. Too bad. What is your opinion?
Well, it could just be that I suck a using it haha. But I've never used those cameras so I can't really attest to how it compares. I don't expect the image quality to be as good as on my Ricoh GR III, though.

I shoot both 35mm and medium format and am thinking of buying the Pentax 17. Been shooting digital for decades and will still continue to do so but just get tired of editing and shooting so many shots. Film slows me down. All the best man and thanks for the great content
@@adventuresofjandk It does slow me down too which I liked. A long time ago I was thiiiiis close to getting a medium format film camera but didn't pull the trigger. I think that's where film gets really interesting! I have some friends who do amazing medium format work! :)

Hahaha, sorry for the clickbait title... but the red light districts in Tokyo are very lowkey compared to other ones, but especially during the daytime. However, there are some sketchy spots if you know where to look. ;)
No thanks, I'll never go back to film. Been there done that. Too expensive, need too much space for negatives and prints, takes too long to see the results. My old 35mm film camera is sitting in a drawer since they came out with digitals that had decent quality. I'll leave these to the young hipsters who think it's cool.

Cool story that nobody asked for đ but guess what? Film is cool, a well shot/printed film image looks a million times better than digital.

That's overall my feeling too, but after 15 years of shooting digital, it's nice to experiment. Film will definitely not become a mainstay for me, but I will probably only use it to make more videos like this, because then there is a 'point' but in my own work I will most likely stick to digital. The only other way it might work is if I have a specific project which I would like to do on film... but that will have to come up for me organically as nothing comes to mind now.
It's so funny to me how militant people are about film/digital. Is it really a million times better? All the time? I guess all my photos are trash then... aw well. :)
