*Gaigher, et al. (1984) compared the growth of hybrid tilapia fish on commercial pellets vs. duckweed. The fish were cultured at high densities in an experimental recirculating unit for 89 days with duckweed (Lemna gibba) or a combination of duckweed and commercial pellets. They conclude that a combination of pellets and Lemna gave the best performance:
Thanks for the video there is not enough information on growing duckweed. I want to make my aquaponics self sufficient and duck weed is a big part of that.
Great shot of duckweed growth containers. Your duckweed is looking healthy. What is the length of your roots? If more than an inch and a half, your protein levels will be low. Optimal nitrogen is approx 50 mg/l total nitrogen to get 42% protein. I'm a huge advocate of duckweed for fish, poultry, compost and green mulch in sustainable urban farms. It's been great to run across your video.
your pond is so nice..id like to immitate, what are you using as oxygen source for your tilapia? do u use air pump or what? what is the model sir..thankyou very much
you genetically splice the flower or bud with the new developing cell's of the duckweed and continue to do this at lest 50-100 times and you'll get a cross breed that well reproduce on it own and become smoke able :)
great! doy need to give any other food from time to time? I am curious.. it does look like a commercial aquaponic system to me.. so, do reach a good enough growth rate only feeding duck weed? do you have any experience with other greens to feed tilapia? thanks
so you feed your fish fully on duckweed? awesome! they'd be like vegetarian fish no? XD is the nutrition from duckweed enough for their living? I'm thinking of using fancy goldfish
How do you keep the Gambusia from suffocating once the duckweed begins to layer up, don't they compete for oxygen and also how do you feed them once layering begins? Thanks in advance.
Would somesone help me what is wrong with my duckweed? Growing condition: 1) water temp less 30 degree C 2) sunlight cover: 30-50 percent. 3) Algea not seen, however a cloudy thin film is floating on water. 4) Nutrition not known, but roots longest are 20mm. average is 12mm. Last time it happened I add in a bit NPK fertilizer but it did not help. 5) First turning white then yellow then die 6) PH 6-6.5
For all photosynthetic organisms that I know of, turning yellow is a strong symptom of nitrogen deficiency. I suggest you keep adding more and more nitrogen. High-nitrogen compost will do, but manure is better/more concentrated. Duckweed, aka watermeal, thrives in very-high nitrogen environments. Its now being used in some waste-treatment plants (essentially vats of fertilizer-water). Here is a good link with more info: www.mobot.org/jwcross/duckweed/practical_duckweed.htm
you should aerate it with a bubbler at least. You can use guppies or larger fish to put into the duckweed tank, but they may eat the duckweed, so its best to use the fish water from your tanks. The duckweed need nutrients too, and will take that from the water from the fish tank, the waste that is in the water.
yea the bacteria act like a fertilizer and then the pond water is for additional support , add 1-5 drops of dish soap to destroy the surface tension so that bugs can't lay eggs :) im doing this for the science fair... I just boil the duckweed re fill some water let duckweed dry and poof realy cheep really healthly food :)
its a plant plants don't need 02... its a pound plant so yea... also use "Wollfia" not minor Wollfia dosent have the small needles wich can cause trouble for us.
Mustard Hello guys! I am currently working on a project for growing duckweed in Nicaragua to feed tilapia. If grown in sufficient quantity (tilapia eat about 2% of their body weight in food per day) there is no need for other plants.
anil SINAM - Pure water alone is not enough. Usually aquatic plants make for a fantastic "cleaning" system. Particularly for water contaminated with large amounts of organic matter (polluted). That's an added benefit. On the other hand for growing solely with clean water, adding earth and manure will "pollute" the water enough for them to thrive. Dissolve some manure in the water and see the difference. ;-) Fish aquaculture can also benefit. Cleaning the water from the fish dejects, while raising Bio mass at the same time.
you can make them yourself. just get some food grade plastic sheets. i saw some 6 mil 6'x100' this morning for 139 US$. not sure it's food grade though but the site does sell some. i just found the cheapest kind. I'm thinking to just use regular plastic sheets from the store for mine.
I dont know much about aquaponics,so i cant really help you there, sorry :( But for the duckweed,in good conditions it will double ever 2 days. Thats about all i know, sorry :(
that's a neat idea. I couldn't find if you had a vid dedicated to that. by poultry I thought you meant chickens but pigeons are a poultry too I guess. too many vids to search through.
plz i`ve planted duckweed in basin water . we have chlorine and flour in water . when i but duckweed in water it come more and more but color is pale . when i planted it in water of the sea coz it did not have flour and chlorine and but Feces of cattle it is come green , but it is take very large amount of feces of cattle plz tell me how to plant duck weed and look like yours .
Sorry but the quality of the video is 240p very low and couldn't make out the subtitle ! I know no need commenting cause nobody get's any answers to they question so thumbs way down on this !
haha i did a presentation on duckweed for a speech class and at the end some guy asked if we could smoke it

Nice one ngayon lang ako nakakita ng ganyan idol,,keep vlogging god bless, pabalik narin idol,,
you know your stuff man, thank you.
Nice video.Thank you very much...
#Christian Brown you have to add fish water to the trays if you want the duckweed to grow properly.
thanks for sharing, I hope we can start sharing beneficial comments that we can pick up from..
Nice video
Oh really sounds exciting
#Ninja 87 you have to give it normal food too, but far less than normal.
nvm, malaysia, you guys do good work there, ive seen affnan killin it too

Tamra Fakhoorian is it same as azolla?
Duck weed as human food? Just wanted to know ur opinion
Nice info. For wolfia, lemna can i use NPK vertilizer ? Sorry for my bad english
do you ever add any nutrients to the duckweed tubs? Like cycling through the fish water? Or does it grow purely on water, sun, and co2?

Does the duckweed spread through an Aquaponic Grow Bed system in any way if it is not all eaten by the fish, or is it only for fish farming.
How thick does a typical later of duckweed get within your grow?

Hi do you supplement with artificial feed?
Can you let me know, please. Where did you get the black tanks ?
Did they compare pellets + Lemna vs pellets only?
so you feed your fish fully on duckweed? awesome!
they'd be like vegetarian fish no? XD
is the nutrition from duckweed enough for their living? I'm thinking of using fancy goldfish
Do your fish live off only duckweed?
How do you harvest duckweed? I bought 2pkts of duckweed seeds online but non of them germinated
Hello sir dis you just feed your fish with that duck weed? Thank you
How do you keep the Gambusia from suffocating once the duckweed begins to layer up, don't they compete for oxygen and also how do you feed them once layering begins? Thanks in advance.
+FellVoice they havest
Gambusia won't be checked in the cover of DW....
How do you fertilize your duckweed?
How did you make so much duckweed plants?
if you are growing duckweed in stagnat water how do you control masquitoes
Where do you buy the shallow culture tanks? Is there a link you can provide?
Hi, What kind of tank are you using to grow the Duckweed?
You can type in english, which implies that you can read english
He literally said it in the video

how big is your fishtank?
Wolffia arrhiza watermeal in which online available
How do you aerate the shallow culture tanks? Does duckweed need oxygen? Is this plain water or with some aditive?

Fong Lee u don't need to aerate it, I use use a nitrogen cycl bacteria in mine to help grow and pond water, tap water will work however
Zurviver _ Really? I should try that. Didnt know that. Thanks!

How to prepare a area for duckweed farming
Do you feed the fish anything else? What other species of fish use duckweed for food?
that would be my question too if it is sufficient to only feed duckweed?

Jen Rose duck weed doubls its population every 24-36 hours, humans can live solely off of it, this type of duckweed is "Wolfifa"

JUST FINISHED THe a um science far for it we measerd it at 72 hours and that was not the best way to grow it.
Sir...
What do we have to mix with water so that the azolla can get the nutrients? Only water is sufficient or not?
Please reply me.

Hello
Does this plant need pump oxygen into the tank to grow?
No. Air pumps are not needed.
Do trout eat duckweed?
where can i get a starter culture?
This is the duckweed farmig model for fish effectively. I think it better if you talk more in your video to guide it and the video should be longer.

Yes
dude dont worry. your stoned and you think your watching another smoking video. I am too XD
u should feed other things as well, just like as they are in the wild
1, how many days it took to double the duckweed quantity and under which density
2, how many fish in a single water tank?
sorry for my poor english
+alex smith Under poor conditions it doubles every week
+Holys Moly thanks, then what about the fish quantity in a single tank?
I dont know much about aquaponics,so i cant really help you there, sorry :(
But for the duckweed,in good conditions it will double ever 2 days.
Thats about all i know,sorry :(
+Holys Moly thanks all the same, i was thought you are the author, sorry

+Fukano Nakito I don't think they would get a chance. :)
I have noticed you have not replied anyone, I was going to as for the spices of the duckweed.
