Queen - The Prophets Song (Official Lyric Video)
• Queen - The Prophets S...
Happy Fun Springtime Series! (2 of 8) I submitted the Cellar Darling cover of this song in the first GWC’s Dad cover series, but here’s the original. As I said then it’s a Brian May composition inspired by a fever dream of a great flood that he had, and eventually appeared on their fourth album, 1975’s “A Night at the Opera.” Obviously this is pre-digital, so using very primitive tape delay devices they couldn’t get as complex with the vocal layers as Anna in Cellar Darling did, but it’s still impressively executed.
Lyrics
Oh-oh, people of the earth
"Listen to the warning, " the seer he said
Beware the storm that gathers here
Listen to the wise man
I dreamed I saw on a moonlit stair
Spreading his hand on the multitude there
A man who cried for a love gone stale
And ice-cold hearts of charity bare
I watched as fear took the old man's gaze
Hopes of the young in troubled graves
"I see no day, " I heard him say
So grey is the face of every mortal
Ah-ah, people of the earth
"Listen to the warning, " the prophet he said
For soon the cold of night will fall
Summoned by your own hand
Ah-ah, children of the land
Quicken to the new life, take my hand
Fly and find the new green bough
Return like the white dove
He told of death as a bone white haze
Taking the lost and the unloved babe
Late too late, all the wretches run
These kings of beasts now counting their days
From mother's love is the son estranged
Married his own, his precious gain
The earth will shake, in two will break
And death all round will be your dowry
Ah-ah, people of the earth
"Listen to the warning, " the seer he said
For those who hear and mark my words
Listen to the good plan
Ah-ah-ah-ah
And two by two, my human zoo
They'll be running for to come
Running for to come out of the rain
Oh, flee for your life
Who heed me not let all your treasure make you
Oh, fear for your life
Deceive you not, the fires of hell will take you
Should death await you
Ah-ah, people can you hear me?
People can you hear me?
People can you hear me?
And now I know, and now I know
And now I know, I know, I know that you can hear me
And now I know, now I know
Now I know, now I know
The earth will shake, in two will break
The earth will shake, in two will break
Death all around, around, around, around
Around, around, around, around
Now I know, now I know
Now I know, now I know, now I know
Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah
Listen to the wise, listen to the wise, listen to the wise
Listen to the wise, listen to the wise man
La-la
La-la-la-la (la-la)
Come here (la, la)
I, you (Come here)
Come here (I, you)
I, you (Come here)
Come here (I, you)
I, you (Come here)
Ahh, aahh, ahh, aaahh
Listen to the man, listen to the man
Listen to the man, listen to the mad man
God give you grace to purge this place
And peace all around may be your fortune
Oh-oh, children of the land
Love is still the answer, take my hand
The vision fades, a voice I hear
"Listen to the madman"
Ooh, but still I fear and still I dare not
Laugh at the madman - Hudba
When you think they were creating this 48 years ago, the craft and technicality are amazing!
I prefer it to Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian wrote it when he had hepatitis, is based on Noah and the floods
@@Semajsenrab72 innuendo>Bohemian Rhapsody
@@thanksmr.obvious6427 innuendo is brilliant piece of art, typical Queen, a journey with lyrics and musical ride on top. Am in Australia so a white Christmas is extremely rare, A Winters Tale, dark room, close your eyes and it transports you to a great Christmas
@@Semajsenrab72 Innuendo is one of the most underrated and best songs of all time ... for me Innuendo is the best song of Queen
And this is when their albums all said "No Synths"
People often don't realise just how long the section is without a single musical instruments being played. This sums Queen up with the sheer creativity of four musical geniuses.
The Prophet song is the longest Queen piece ever performed. John Deacon's bass line is only one note repeated.
This song is the best song ever.
One of their lesser known songs. But equally better than bohemian rhapsody.
One of my favorite queen songs.. written by Brian may
This is why Queen are the GOAT rock band because of their versatility, creativity & pure genius from 4 talented musicians & songwriters.
This is a freaking masterpiece
This was one of their masterpieces. For another you might want to try "March of the Black Queen"
The whole of Queen two is a metal masterpiece.
@@martinmowbray4304 except for "Nevermore", beautiful piano ballad
Queen was so musically adventurous which made them uniquely great. My favorite band.
I remember siting back in a big old chair with headphones on and eyes closed just being carried away by this song, it was magic back then and it's still magic now.
And it's on the same album as Bohemian Rhapsody. 2 legendary rock operas on 1 record is just nuts.
One of the best Queen songs, I always loved this almost forgotten masterpiece. Thank you so much for reacting to this.
An underrated rock masterpiece and the Queen many don’t even know because they don’t dig deep enough into their ridiculous catalogue!! Great choice guys!!
Some people raise their eyebrows when I say Queen could be heavy and progressive as they only know the radio hits, then I play this track!! Sure, Bohemian Rhapsody gets lauded as the masterpiece of this album, but for me, this isn't far behind.
This album played so many musical genres - rock (Rhapsody, I'm In Love With My Car, Death On Two Legs, Sweet Lady), metal/progressive (Prophet's), folk ('39), ragtime (Seaside Rendezvous, Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon), ballad (Love Of My Life), pop (You're My Best Friend, Good Company), and an anthem (God Save The Queen)... it had it all!
Thanks for checking this epic track!! Made my day.
Good Company is dixieland, man
If this doesn't give Stairway to Heaven a run for its money then nothing does! Love it! ✌
Amen !
And then this song goes straight into “Love of My Life” which is my favourite Queen song. This album is absolute fire!
Yes,one hell of an album !
Thanks, guys! This has sometimes been referred to as "Brian May's Bohemian Rap" -personally, I think this is even more intricate. Brian was doing all that echo & repeat on the guitar....and the lyrics are almost "biblical" .. lol at the end this goes straight into "Love of my Life"...
..and it goes beautifully into Love of My Life. Should be listened together. The Prophet's Song was the song that blew me away as a five year old walking past my older sister's bedroom and she was jamming it on her stereo. It was a brand new record at the time. I sat in the hallway and was transfixed and became the hugest Queen fan from that moment. Thanks for the reaction!
the whole A Night at the Opera album is off the charts and a trip.....
Every Queen song has its own details and always amazes listeners.
Echoplex was new back then. Queen loved playing with echo.
are you kidding me ? you can play Queen? wow, I love the prophet song
Yes! My favorite Queen track.
How did I not see this upload??!!???!
This is one of theeee most memorable songs of my life.
Inspiring.
At the beginning / end. Some may be guitar. But. Apart from writing it, singing the opening lines of the song, & killing it on The Red Special. He is starting / ending it. On a Japanese instrument called a Toy Koto. Which he picked up / learned to play. During their first tour of Japan. In the early 70s.
I love seeing people being blown away by the Prophet Song
Wow! Great reaction! This is fan stuff and you liked it! 😊👑🔥🎸
you both have great smiles.
This, Masterpiece !!!
I remember getting the album back in the mid 70's....listened to it on my friends quadraphonic sterero with headphones....just in awe to what I was listening...pure eargasm
Ok, I’ve loved this since the A Night at the Opera Albion came out. Great work Sir Brian May and Queen
Three great early Queen songs are Ogre Battle, Great King Rat, and Brighton Rock.
And i BET you didn't hear another dozen ole Queen epics haha. Best Queen album ever: A Night at the Opera.
The depth in there music was incredible i listened to this in the 70s and it still astounds me
never in history will there be another band like queen
Saw them do this live... complete with Freddie Mercury singing harmony by himself.
As you both liked this one, I'd be interested to hear of what you make of Queen's 'White Man', another Brian May composition from the Day at the Races album.
Queen & The Cars, even Cliff Richard in his song Devil Woman toyed with stereo phonic sound making a 3D space with sound for those who had the new Quadraphonic stereo sound systems in their car's and homes that gave the ability to engineer music to swirl around the listener. They could have a five part harmony with one harmony over head and one part of the harmony in each corner of your car then move a voice or instrument in any direction so the music could swirl around the listener. It was amazing! If you by chance had your headphones on and placed a series of albums on your auto change turn table when this song(the first on side two of the album)and you fell a sleep when it Dropped and started playing you were about to be startled awake when the round started after a voice suddenly very close to one ear appears out of nowhere! It made me scream! Mom came running, I made everyone in my family close their eyes and listen to this song to watch the shock when their eyes flew open! We never experienced 3D sound before... It was magic! I love the band The Cars because they used 3D music effects so often in their songs. Depending where you sat in a car every person had their own listening experience. It gave new meaning to car Chinese Fire Drills, because what you heard was different no matter where you sat. Back then we pooled our money for gas if we didn't have enough to see a movie or something so we could aimlessly cruise around in the car, just to get out from under Mom & Dad's suspicious watchful eye. In the day of one house one TV no computer... what could you quietly do in your room to occupy your time and not be board out of your mind???
My favourite Queen track ..
This track does need to be listened too with Love of my life, hence the sudden cut off ..
Early Queen, quite simply mind blowing ❤
Queen were at their peak in the 70.s They were hard rock and prog band. Then they turned pop….
A night at the opera with my favorite album when I was young and first got into rock ‘n’ roll
‘This is an adventure sums this song up!!
Beautiful reaction another masterpiece from Queen up there with bohemian rhapsody so many Queen songs that blow your mind take care sending love from England x x
This is one of the most underated song by Queen 😢 this Brian May’s MASTERPIECE some think its quites as good as BR and I one of them! The high note you hear from the guitar is from a special japanese childguitar, Brian get it from a child when they was in Japan, so thats very special…. I love this song. Egen the song was made, Freddie had to made his singing with himself, it was sliced up all over the studio, ohhh I see him for me when they should set it together…..omg, Freddie worked very fast 😅😅😅
This is a substantially better song than Bohemian Rhapsody off the same album and I was always surprised it didn't get more airplay.
If it's possible for you... INNUENDO by Queen blows your mind!!!
My favourite Queen
The sad thing about this song is how it morphs into "Love of My Life"; another amazing song on this album. Like the famous medley from Abbey Road, those two songs should be played back to back.
Yes❤ please stay on the Queen train ❤️
🎉👌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻2nd time
That was so weirdly wonderful 😊❤
Brilliant reaction to one of their greatest compositions. Thank you. I STRONGLY recommend reacting to Brian May live at the Bixton academy and in particular 'Resurrection'. It will blow your minds !!
At first hardly any one had reacted to it- I love that it’s being discovered, and loved !
Kudos to Brian May for writing such a masterpiece
This is Queen's best song. Fight me.
An adventure indeed Sir
Brian’s style was a little more on the hard rock/metal side and this is a great example
From Belgium...what a journey!!! 😍
Queen mastering the “panning technique” ❤ Subbed 🎉
EPICA.. BÍBLICA ♥️
I wore the grooves out on my LP in 1975 playing this, BoRhap, You're My Best Friend, I'm in Love with My Car, and Love of My Life particularly over and over. This was Brian May's masterpiece in much the same way as Bo Rhap was Freddie's. It's probably best described as a rock madrigal with fugue, over 8 mins long and something I'm pretty sure no other rock band would have the guts to put on an album. "A Night at the Opera" is truly eclectic and sheer genius. (but I'm not a fan or anything... hahaha)
beginings proto power metal!!
Would like to hear Brian’s presentation when he submitted it for a track in the album.
They were using a Japanese toy String instrument called a Koto and acoustic guitar for the opening
you basically CANT listen to this song without headphones
You really ought to an album listen through to night at the opera. As a work it's really rather good.
Brian’s masterpiece .. Yes, inspired by a dream he had about the Great Flood .. hence the nods to Noah’s ark! Now Brian was quite ill with hepatitis at this time. Queen had to withdraw from their U.S. Tour opening for Mott The Hoople. You’ve heard of fever dreams?? 🌎🌊💦🕊🕊🐘🐆🦓🐅🦏🦒🐫🦬
Brians spectacular failure to write another Bohemian Rhapsody lol
But one of my favourite songs of the album, not sure it was ever played live though
ooh STEREO
Queen 'Millionaire Waltze'
A little different than "she loves you, ya,ya,ya"
I just love your reactions!! You are great! This is epic song. Please react on Death on two legs. Greetings 😊
Amazing!!!!!! Like much of reactions for you!!! Doing one reaction in song The march of the Black Queen from álbum Queen ll!!!!
Please someone explain why we are subjected to such indifferent demonstrations of creativity and musicianship nowadays, barring a few exceptions - this should serve as incredible motivation for aspiring musicians and especially current artists
Thanks for reviewing and sharing ❤
no synth sounds were used on this recording
It's truly pathetic that virtually NO ONE realizes that this song is actually the musical retelling of Noah's Ark in Genesis. Noah IS the Prophet referred to here.
it‘s „the“ original! no other version comes close to this, because it‘s exactly the way it‘s intended. should there be any modern version with even more complexity put over by anyone else than queen it’s simply taken and overdone with the attitude „faster, higher, more“, so not worth a hipe, i guess.
Neither of you seems to get the point of the song.
I admire the musicianship and the imagination of this song. However, it's also very pompous, pretentious and overblown. It meant nothing to me when I was younger and I've always considered it a good example of why punk rock had to happen.
Maybe it does not mean anything to you, but there is a message in the song, that people should be more caring of each other. There is also the idea that you might be indoctrinated by religion. The acapella section is like religious indoctrination. Queen was not always a band that took themselves too seriously, but generally their music does have a lot of meaning and messages. Punk rock obviously has its appeal and its place, it more focused on raw emotion. I personally like punk rock and prog rock. But punk rock was not really an advancement of music. Progressive rock was focusing more on the advancement of music. (These days progressive rock and metal does not focus on the advancement of music). People are different, they express themselves differently. Brian May wrote this song, he was a good musician with years of experience, he was an university graduate from a more middle class family. He is going to express himself very differently from Jonny Lydon who grew as a working class person from Cockney. That does mean not that his message in the song is not heartfelt.
People express their own experiences within music. and obviously people do have a lot of different experiences.
Now we have basically gone 100% in the wrong direction when it comes to simplification of music. All of the most popular songs have the same chords and chord progressions. All of the songs are between 1 - 4 chords. They have similar drum patterns. Everything has the same formula. I am not blaming punk rock but they did create the idea of simplifying music. Popular music has now basically been destroyed by over simplification.
The music industry does need artists with very unique and individual approaches well.
@@ZENOBlAmusic Thanks for your detailed reply to my comment. I agree with most of what you say. Having grown up with Queen (yes, I'm old 😄), I like a lot of their material. Of course, you're right to make the point that there's enough room for all types of music and that different genres serve different functions. You grasped the point I made about punk being the antidote to 70s rock excesses, so there's no need for me to labour that.
Adventurous, forward thinking, unique, spectacular is more like it
