Motor Racing was born in England but it had to fight to survive thanks to war, tragedy, and constant setbacks. Until one wealthy British family had enough and brought it back. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is Britain's most popular motoring event, but it wasn't always that way.

What do you guys think about Goodwood? Ever been?
No, but I'm planning to go there in the future!
0:30-0:39 is the most click bait I’ve ever heard. Please don’t feel the need to hyperbolise. Just how it is will always be the best way x

There are so many inaccuracies in this it's difficult to know where to start. What I will say is that the description of pre war racing in Britain is completely wrong. Brooklands was obsolete by 1939, in a poor state of repair and WW2 merely hastened the end. In mainland Europe (which doesn't get a mention, Spa, Nordscheife, Pescara, Miglia Mille, Le Mans etc.??) road racing was the dominant form of motor sport which is why Brooklands never hosted a Grand Prix, but Donington Park, which is never mentioned, hosted two 1936 and 1938. Enthusiasm doesn't make up for lack of research!
As someone who's visited Brooklands a lot, I wanted to say the bit where he says German bombing destroyed the whole site in WW2 isn't accurate. What was left of the racetrack survived the Blitz.
But the damage had already been done since the site was handed over for military aircraft production at the start of the war. Part of the southern bank had been cut through for access roads and the end of the airfield's main runway, while other parts of the track had factories and hangers built over it.
Today, most of the backstraight and large parts of the banks at both ends still survive. You can see them on google maps. No chance of a race ever occurring there again though, a housing estate has since been built over "the fork" and the former aircraft factory is still an industrial estate today.
The museum at Brooklands is well worth a visit, not just for the cars but also the planes they have on show. They have a Concord on display :)
Reach out to him and collaborate. You sound like an accurate historian. We would never know this video is t accurate, and it’s a bummer to hear “it’s completely wrong” in the comments. This dude makes money on this channel.
This is about goodwood... Not spa or nurburgring or the early days of racing in general.
Just Goodwood.
@@codymeek9774 based on that logic... why is Brooklands or anything else in it then? Goodwood fits into a rich narrative made up of significant historical people, cars and circuits... it is needed and it needs to be correct.
@@davemieze9021 It isn't completely Wrong.
It is brief and highlights the important points about British racing in a manageable way..
There are many more detailed historical documentaries available on the subject...
BUT.. Let's shout out for Donnington!
Loved hearing about our historic racetracks. I've walked the banks at Brooklands, ran Goodwood circuit, lost money on horses at Goodwood racetrack, done the Festival of Speed on occasions and attended the British Grand Prix so many times at Silverstone.
You, my friend, are officially awesome
@@DanielJacksonMusic Sadly not awesome enough to get tickets for the British Grand Prix this weekend but I did go to Spain again this year for their Gp so some consolation.
Did you ever go to a British GP at Brands back in the day?
@@hmdwgf No, sadly not. It was always a stretch too far from where I lived back then with limited means.
Lucky you
My personal favourite is Goodwood Breakfast Club.
Completely free to turn up, first Sunday of the month there's a different theme (Supercar Sunday, British Classics, American Muscle etc.). Cars are arranged on the track for people to gander at with a vast selection of cars on display. A 250 GTO has been spotted there among other rares such as F40's and P1's.
It's sort of a formal car meet on the track for anyone.
Thanks! I didn't know about that.
Brooklands was not completely smashed during WW2 as my father spent the entire war there working for Vickers Armstrongs building Wellingtons and Warwicks and Hawkers built Hurricanes there as well. Barnes Wallis had an office there too.
sad to see it as just a tescos and m&s now
@@deadly3553 have you been there?
@@mistersmoker7443 Yea, used to live near there my parents and grandparents would tell me stories about the track
@@mistersmoker7443 theres a museum in there aswell
@@deadly3553 The Museum is a really good day out for all the family. It celebrates its history both as a Race Track for cars, motor cycles and cycle racing and the home of the Aircraft industry Hawker as well as Vickers (BAC). It has regular weekend events bringing in large numbers of enthusiasts and spectators.
Hillclimbing was a very popular form of motorsport in the UK, far more than circuit racing. For many years there were too many hills to list in use, but in 1925 racing on public roads was banned, after an accident at Kop Hill. So we were left with Brooklands and Shelsley Walsh. The MAC had moved to Shelsley before the ban, but as it was a private drive, so were able to continue racing to this day. In 1931 the first park circuit was opened at Donnington, so Brooklands was not the only circuit in the country. Goodwood opened in 1948 (as did Croft), by which time Donnington Park (1931) and Crystal Palace (1927 for bikes and 1937 for cars) were both active. The Brooklands site was hit during the war, but the damage was nowhere near as bad as you make out, aircraft production continued after the bombing, the main damage was inflicted on the Vickers factory.
FYI it’s simply, ‘Brooklands’. It’s never referred to as, ‘The Brooklands’
Been driving goodwood for the last 10 years, lord march himself is a lovely fella, being part of the festival of speed and seeing videos like these make my days better, new sub earned here
Albon is quickly becoming my go to channel for automotive history. Props to you and your team, this was an excellently curated video and it shows.
Same bruh
I hear ya man. I absolutely love the videos he puts out. He's got a great way of grabbing your attention, & holding on. Until you start looking for another video like a crackhead . Great work Albon.
If you want to know the history of most of the race track i recommend watching circuit of the past
Calling this video history is a bit of a stretch. The very first few sentences are untrue.
Then you will end up being confused when many of the things he said, end up being false. He’s done this in many of his videos. Idk if he just googled everything and goes with the first thing he sees, or just doesn’t know shit and doesn’t give af about being accurate so just makes videos to make 💰. Read through the comments in each of his videos. He’s heavily corrected by people who seem to know the facts.
I cant believe this channel has blown up so much. I've been around since 3k and I can't wait to see Albon go even further!!!
I’ve been going to the Festival and Revival every year for 12 years now it really is a fantastic unique racing experience that maintains racing heritage. I love it.
I live right by goodwood, and regularly work at both the race circuit, and the horse racing course. It is an amazing place to be, and having met Charles Lennox on a number of occasions, I can say that he is a truly kind hearted man! It's great to see somewhere that is my defacto second home being talked about in such high spirits!!
with ya there! Fly at Goodwood and its the most magical place!
Excellent video, I'm actually going to the festival of speed this year I'm so excited
That's awesome!! Have a great time!
As a brit myself all I can say is that was a fantastic and informative look at the history of Goodwood. Nice one.
I live just down the road from Goodwood motor circuit and built a bar there in 2013 for lord march and had the absolute privaliage of meeting the legend that is the late Sir Stirling Moss as he placed a time capsule benieth a paving slab as you walk through the gate to the bar area. Love this video and makes me realise just how proud I am to be British and how lucky I am to be so close to such an historical place and the air field is still there till this day with an original spitfighter aircraft and a U.S aifrorce Harvard that only a handful of people are allowed to fly or even be a passenger in
17:08 A brief side-note: this isn’t entirely accurate for Goodwood was closed down due to the ever increasing speed of the cars which in turn rendered the track dangerous. The current event focuses on cars that race at low enough speeds that the track is safe. Hence the lack of post 1970 cars at any Revival/MM event.
Brotha. Your giving the likes of history and discovery channel a run for it's money.
Not just content and accuracy, but over all production quality. Legit appreciation for your content
lol 'accuracy'
@@chumleyk voice to text sucks and I'm too lazy to fix lol
@@andrewharris7868 he wasn't laughing at the accuracy of your comment, he was laughing that you thought the story was accurate. It wasn't. There are loads of very inaccurate statements in it. Very shoddily researched. I'm sure history and Discovery channel would do a much better job of the research.
Awesome video! I attended my first GP in 1968 and this video rekindles many of my childhood memories. Thank you!
What an incredible history piece! I tell my brother all the time about just how incredible of an event the Festival of Speed is. I didn't even know about Goodwood until about 10 years ago. Now, it's the main reason why I want to visit the UK.
Thank you for this great video! You've earned yourself a subscriber!
Little bit of history in my family for you; my dad (RIP) went round Brooklands in a Bentley with a friend of his between the wars. I've been round the banking in a replica car of that era. It's quite something and very steep. Even my sister loved it and she's not even keen on thrill rides.
And now there's a new record holder this year! Insane how every year they do get faster and faster. I've only been watching since 2015. Loved the history lesson. Great video.
My granduncle is one of the founders of the Goodwood Supporters Association that brought Goodwood back, can't help feeling a bit proud.
I have an old green GSA jumper from the 90s that my grandad left me, still wear it to this day.
Thank you for sharing the History and Expansion of this English Racing Track!
Exceptionally well presented. Many thanks from Sydney, Australia.
My husband & I are from Canada 🇨🇦. We attended The Goodwood Festival of Speed for 3 days in 2012. It was fantastic! Definitely a bucket list item for sure.
From a lad from Manchester uk born and bread as we say, for you to mention the people who invented literally sport cars from the very start, like 30 mins away from where i have always lived, even i didn't know that but you did, were talking 'MOTOSPORTS' here, my ass really did fall out, that was an awesome explanation from a foreign perspective of motorsport, great video, subbed, that part about Ashton Under Lynne i think as a kid i have heard before, infact, i know, but damn my jaw was on the floor, out of all places on earth for motorsports to be developed, it developed 30 mins away from where i have always lived, love it!
Great Video, as a Marshal at Goodwood it was good to see the history put over a a well balanced fashion.
There are a so many inaccuracies like Wellington bomber were built in WW2 not WW1, large parts of Brooklands still exists, (well worth a visit), the major damage was done to the circuit when they extended the main runway cutting through the banking.
The thing I know about Goodwood is that is where Bruce McLaren died in 1970 while testing an experimental wing configuration on his CAN AM car. Crashed into the last officials flag bunker station at the track, they were in the process of removing the bunkers because of safety issues.
I was a baby at the time lol but I lived where the NZ Grand Prix was held, Ardmore Aerodrome so growing up I followed motor racing because of living so close to where it all happened. We had the NZ Grand Prix until that fazed out and moved to a race track but with lesser cars in the mid 70's and the NZ Rally use to go through town every year through the 70's 80's. Good time to be growing up.
Bruce Mclaren, Denny Hulme and Chris Amon Kiwi legends.
I love your videos, keep it up with the amazing automotive documentaries.
Brilliant video, thank you for the great historic look back at our motor racing.
Albon or guff has to have 1million subscriber his content is just so good. Keep up the good work props to your team.
The impression is that the creators of this video may not be able to find England with Sat Nav! Goodwood certainly became a racing circuit after WWII - but the Festival of Speed did not start until 1993. What is important is the role of successive Dukes of Richmond, to whom we all owe a great deal.
Just came back from 2022 FOS. It was utterly fantastic. The cars, bikes, stands and people were amazing! Im definitely coming back
What a brilliant brilliant video, this must’ve taken you a long time to compile I live not far from Goodwood and have been many times but there are things that I didn’t even know that you put on here thank you very very much👏👏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Reppin’ SG t shirt, nice!
It fits really nice haha, I wear it all the time
Very premium shirt, no piano gloss plastic
What a fantastic way to spend some time, watching this video, I see some mistakes (pointed out by others more clued up than me) were made, nothing that cannot be put right in another video, but what a super story.
Such a shame that the old Brooklands circuit was not restored, what a place to race that would be now, visited it some years ago and just to walk up that slope is such an experience knowing what once went on there!
Thanks for this, very entertaining, well done!
In the 1980s Vickers.BAC were very strict regarding access to the site ostensibly due to their Government Defence and Commercial contracts. About that time when the Brooklands Society was formed with the intent of preserving various buildings associated with the Pre War racing visitors were vetted, entry was limited to the few. Fortunately enough support was forthcoming to make the present museum site a good reflection of its pre war heritage.
Loved this video! So well told and well researched. Funnily enough I bought my first car (W reg Rover Mini) at a Brooklands classic Mini event the same year I went to Goodwood Revival for the first time. I knew how special it was to go to these places and events at the time, but thanks to this video I now know exactly WHY these locations are so hallowed. Thank you!
Sadly, this video is very BADLY researched. It is full of inaccuracies and incorrect statements.
@@EricIrl Watched a couple more videos and did some research about these tracks and the history and yeah, you're right.
It's a shame really, as it's a well put together video, but the information isn't all correct.
Hopefully Albon can learn from this in the future.
@@JustLoveday It’s an example of style over accuracy.
Yo Guff, Keep up the good work my guy, I appreciate the knowledge that you’re bringing to me.
Although ostensibly retired from racing since 1962, Moss did make a number of one-off appearances in professional motorsport events in the following two decades. For Example: In 1980 he made a comeback to regular competition, in the British Saloon Car Championship with the works-backed GTi Engineering Audi team AND In 2004, as part of its promotion for the new SLR, Mercedes-Benz reunited Moss with the 300 SLR "No. 722" in which he won the Mille Miglia nearly 50 years earlier
Seeing Goodwood back doing what it does is awesome watching it now and the atmosphere,, out of this world☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland great video
What a really nice bit of CZcams, motor racing fan, sort of,learned so much from this bit, well played fellah.
I’m English and I never knew this. This is really well researched and well made. Great stuff
Fantastic video! I am lucky enough to live close to the Goodwood Motor Circuit and fly light aircraft from there. It is a truly magical place, beautifully frozen in time, beautifully manicured and looked after - its a bit of a spiritual home for me with aeroplanes and racing cars! If you ever get to go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (usually in July) or the Goodwood Revival (on this weekend in September) please do, its a dream for any petrol heads both 2 and 4 wheeled!
I sometimes see your videos in my recommended, but I always skipped over them for some reason. But this well-timed upload got my interest. Now I'm thinking how the hell I wasn't subscribed ages ago. Anyway, keep up the great work, and I'll be binging your whole channel for a while.
Excellent show young man. Great presentation and choices of images.
Goodwoods festival of speed is a de rigueur event for british petrol heads. For myself its not only the amazing opportunity to see ultra rare classic vehicles actually being raced (for example the jet turbine powered Rover!) But also the aviation aspect which im so glad you covered.
Great stuff. And yes, i did hit like amd subscribe!
Brilliant; well done! Goodwood has long been on my Bucket List. Maybe 2023?
Well done, really great video. Never been but just put this racing spectacle on my bucket list.
"Keep Calm & Race on ! "- Love it !
Thanks for sharing the history of Goodwood. In my opinion this is the best motor event you may attend !
G'Day Albon, what a great history lesson. To include information about other tracks in a chronological order won me over. You have a new subscriber. Cheers.
Enjoyable video, thank you. It's good to see decent content produced by someone who clearly loves the subject as so many just churn out videos on any and every subject they think will earn them hits.
What a superb documentary. Well done!
Thanks! I've watched all the Festival of Speed videos, but really never knew the story. Awesome!!
Beautifully crafted video! Very impressed!
Excellent stuff. First time watching this channel and it was brilliant. Well done sir!
Thanks for uploading. Goodwood festival is one of the biggest motorsport event and celebration.
Really appreciate the work you put into this it's truly an amazing venue I've been lucky enough to race there myself and while I was doing my laps I had a spitfire take off over me truly and incredible venue with one of a kind experiences
I’ve been to brooklands it’s next to the Mercedes museum. Also when I was there they were doing a race one of the cars broke down but it was still a nice little race.
at 5.18 you state that in 1915 Vickers were producing the Wellington bomber at Brookkands, the Wellington is a ww2 aircraft the shot is a Vickers Vimy a ww1 bomber
I used to do deliveries to Goodwood, you don't actually realise how big it is until you get there. There's even a runway and a flying school, luxury hotel and spa and restaurant and all the other stuff as well. I had to drive a 26 ton truck across the track while a people were racing around the circuit.
No you didn’t that’s complete and utter horseshit
again brilliant man love the history love the passion
Congratulations 👏👏👏 very well done . Thanks for bringing the history of that place.
love this background music you selected. kinda reminds me of the nice classy jazzy stuff in gran turismo 3.
i live near Godwood and worked there for a year. the Earl is a really nice and down to earth man. truly loves motorsport,. however when he set up and started the festival of speed event it was make or break for him financially, if it had failed he would of have too declare brankruptcy and lost everything and been homeless and pennyless. But now the estate is safe and because of motorsport his children can pay death duties and keep motoring on in to the future. Motorsport the best sort of all!!
That sir, is a brilliant telling of the complete History of Goodwood. I salute from here on the East side of the pond to the you on the West. 😎🏁
Amazing video guff I was hooked for every second you have anew subscriber !!
Goodwood is a great place; I used to be part of a small high performance driving club; and we took some of Ford's people to Goodwood circuit for a track day; it was an awesome day and I was one of the marshals that day. Never got to drive round the track but did get a ride round it in a Sierra XR4X4. I do wish they didn't charge so much to get in to the Goodwood Revival. Over 600 notes for a ticket; Festival of Speed is much more realistic but the entry is limited.
It may be 600 for a weekend pass with grandstand and other extras but Friday is £64 and Sunday £84. (Saturday sold out so I can't see the price)
A lot of our tracks are ex airfields which seems to make the most fun racing circuits.
Goodwood hill climb record already beaten since this vid came out, crazy little car that looks great.
Been to the FOS 3 times in the last 5 years and it's always an awesome day out. Would love to go to the Revival one day to see some classic racing
Finally watched an Albon video. I like how the video is done. I'll surely watch more of your videos since I've subscribed to your channel.
Brilliant presentation young man ,thank you
I live near Brooklands. They still have parts of the cambered race track you can see driving past going to Tesco.
Thanks Albon for a great story and thanks algorithm for getting me here.
Great video man, you really did your research because it shows
Having just watched most of the 2022 Goodwood revival races, this was an interesting video to watch.
Enjoyed watching the video but I do have a couple of points of hopefully constructive criticism. The way the video ran seemed to say the Supercar paddock and Rally stage were part of The Revival when they are both part of the Festival of Speed. Maybe just me?
You made no mention of the fact the Goodwood circuit arose from the old RAF airfield perimeter track and indicated it was just built from scratch.
Best bit for me was the colour footage of the abandoned circuit prior to it's rebirth and 1st Revival meeting. I shall now be searching online for more pics/footage of that.
Agreed... RAF Westhampnet was there long before the circuit and was used as back up for the nearby RAF Tangmere during the war. Like you said, it was the ring road, just as both Brooklands, Silverstone and many other circuits within Britain that was turned into the track. Also agree about the confusion between both revival and festival. Both are completely separate from one another and offer totally different atmospheres.
No he seems to conflate the two events repeatedly, and seems to believe that the opening of the modern Goodwood events marked a renaissance in British motorsports in the same decade that the BTCC was at its height, and British constructors won seven F1 WCCs, hmm. Not sure anyone genuinely believes that Silverstone is a "slow" circuit either.
The only time I saw Stirling Moss was at Goodwood when he climbed into a pre-war sliver BMW racing car, Classic!
I’ve driven at revival and u are constantly reminded in the drivers briefing that if there is a big crash that u cause u could ruin it for everyone else and u are told to be safe and don’t do anything stupid but so unique and amazing event defo go if u get the opportunity
Goodwood is way high up on my bucket list. I would love to spend some time there.
I very much enjoyed this.
Thank you.
Fantastic video. Good on ya mate!
You even correctly pronounced renaissance "Renee sonse".
To this I do subscribe.
Thanks for the content! Great job!
In 1904 Vanderbilt held auto races on a large track he built on Long Island New York, it was called the Vanderbilt cup. This predated many other racing venues, as well as being larger (23 miles) and having over 200,000 spectators and drivers and cars from all over Europe and the states.
What a truly wonderful report so much that I didn’t know about my own country’s history at Goodwod. So thanks 😊

pretty cool recap, thnx chap!
Great job! I only miss the late 60-s incl. the tragic death of Bruce McLaren in 1970.
Well here we are just finished the 2022 event as a marshal in the SuperCar Paddock you did leave out a few details BUT if you have not yet been to this event put it on your bucket list it NEVER disappoints

I live locally to Brooklands they have a top notch museum with a good few hundred period cars and aircraft from racing to war planes and motorcycles there is also likely over 2 or so miles of original track standing....
This is a really cool vid for me, Goodwood is pretty much my home, It’s right on my doorstep and I hear lots of stories from my own family, so it’s cool to hear some more stories
Living so close I forget how important Goodwood was and is.
I've had my handbrake give out on the banks of Brooklands and jump-started on Goodwood racetrack itself 😂😂
Finally learn the origins of Goodwood. Hope to go one day.
Goodwood Festival of speed, Isle of Mann TT, Doing a fast lap of the Nurburgring. All on my bucket list of things to see/do before my time is up. Also non motor sport related, you can add attending a soccer match at Wembley, running with the bulls in Pamplona, diving on the great barrier reef (before it's all destroyed) and checking out Ayers rock while i'm in the neighborhood and visiting Patagonia. I know it's ambitious, realistically i probably won't accomplish them all, at least 2-3 of them and I'd be happy. It's fun to dream though, isn't it? 😀
i'm going to goodwood this thursday! its awesome!
I agree with the comment that there are so many inaccuracies or plainly wrong statements that is difficult to know where to start.
