Wow, Ottawa's Rideau Canal is the largest naturally frozen lake in the world! What do you think of this incredible ice rink in Canada's capital?
Doubt
The Canal Is GREAT For Hockey And Easy
not anymore global warming killing the ice rink
I have went skating there before good morning everybody Canada love's you all enjoy you're weekend 😘🙋🐕😃
Definitely eat a "beavertail" when you get down on the ice, they're delicious!
Maximus Lee haha, that's right it's a kind of pastry, good to point it out or people might think Canadians aren't being kind to their national animal
Primus?
Don't forget hot chocolate to go with it. ☺
Amazing! I am definitely adding this to my travel destinations! Ottawa, here I come! Thanks National Geographic for sharing this wonderful info.
It's amazing! I go there every year
Be sure to check the long term weather reports for Ottawa, as a changing climate has made for relatively short canal skating seasons. This year was pretty good, as it was cold all through December and January, but it closed mid-February. It would be a shame to book a trip without being able to go on the canal, despite there being many other things to do
Patrick Lynn Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to keep that in mind so I won't miss it.
We're so happy to hear this video inspired you to add Ottawa to your list of places to visit, Azliana!
I live there:) go here every winter
I go when it's 12 am and its empty, it's my own little slice of heaven
Amazing. I lived in Ottawa for a couple of years, and remember this. I think the canal terminates at Dow's Lake, if my memory is not deceiving me, where I skated a few times myself. But it was over thirty years ago!
Basically, yep. Ends just past the lake at the Hartwell Locks
Patrick Lynn Thanks. It was a long time ago. Ottawa's a great city, and I'd love to come back someday!
That must've been so exciting to skate on the world's largest naturally frozen ice rink! We're so glad this video brought back your fond memories of skating and living in Ottawa.
National Geographic Thanks for replying. Ottawa was a lovely city, but very cold! I'm back living in UK now!
I thought Antarctica was the world's largest icerink😁
That’s an amazing view and just a beauty of nature!!!
Wow amazing 💙💙💙👍
Wish to be there some day.....
Gotta love living in Ottawa. 😊 Beautiful, peaceful and calm city! 🙂
Amazing!
Beautiful!😘
I live in Ottawa!!!!!!
And I’ve been to the canal many times I think everyone should have a chance to go!
👍👍!! Love you Nat Geo... 😉😘
Awesome day on the canal today. Not a cloud in the sky, nice and brisk and tons of folks out enjoying a skate. Jan 16, 2022.
Just when i thought Amsterdam canals were amazing when frozen, NG shows this :O
wow, that looks amazingly enjoyable 😀 but it seems really crowded in some parts
Bucket list WORTHY
Okay this is my bucket list sadly can’t go cause if COVID but when it’s all over and safe I’m definitely going
I always forget how cool Canada can be
Cool is right, as we Canadian say "We promise winter, but, don't guarantee summer"...
@@bigfatbaataed welp. That didn’t age well
My local beauty. 's a shame it's closed half the tie due to poor ice conditions.
This is so cool - I want to visit and skate! Do they use a zamboni to maintain it and keep it smooth?
Yes, they use zambonis to maintain it!
Lucky people living near or around it.😀😘
Rohit Kumar i live in Ottawa I go there all the time
xACE luck you 😉😂👍👌
We go there every winter. It's so much fun and you GOTTA get a beavertail while you're there
11 people thumbed down skating on the Rideau canal. Highly uncanadian.
Hey fun fact, that drone footage was technically illegal in Canada! Can't even get a permit to fly over people's heads like that.
I live there :)
My dream is to skate there
I was on it before.
I always forget that this isn't something everyone has... (I go there a lot also it's open this year yay! *covid*)
how cold must it be and how many metres of ice thick?
It's looked after by the National Capital Commission. Not sure how thinck but they check it all the time and if it isn't thick enough and safe they close it until it is. They switch the locks every year so the water flows normally into the Rideau River and not partially into the Canal, so there's less water to freeze and it's safer.
But the longest skating path is in Winnipeg ;)
My city
I live near that rink
name of that song please
Can someone tell me if I can skate there at the start of December?
That's a bit early. It usually opens sometime in January.
I’m jealous
If it breaks they are all in deep shit😂😂😂
🤩🥰
Okay but where do you put your normal shoes
Pack in your bag.
How does the ice not break?
With weather approaching -20c or colder for the first 2 months of the year its easy to freeze this over, also it has to have a minimum thickness before opening
It's melted right now.
Unseasonably warm weather has that effect.
soon....
👍🌷💓🌷👍
Looks like an overcrowded nightmare...pass.
you dont need to pass, because global warming the canal is closed 😂
