A VIP tour of the plant that delivered North America’s largest-ever emissions reduction, when Ontario replaced coal with #nuclearpower. Our guide is Control Room Operator Dan Campbell, who went from operating N.America’s largest coal plant, Nanticoke (RIP), to operating its largest nuclear plant, Bruce Power.
The world of #climateaction is always asking for #sustainable replacements to fossil fuels that work at scale. Well, Ontario is one of just a few electrical grids in the world that successfully replaced fossil fuels and it did it with homemade Candu reactors, and a little emotional support from Drake and Justin Bieber.

Great video I enjoyed it. I am a retired Nuclear Engineer. There is a small inaccuracy in the discussion that I would like to clarify. Heavy water is not used because it has a much higher boiling point than normal water. It does have a higher boiling point, about 1 degree C, but that is unimportant. It is easy to keep water from boiling simply by putting it under higher pressure. The primary reason heavy water is used as a moderator is because it is less likely to absorb a neutron then normal water is. With more neutrons available to cause a chain reaction, heavy water can allow unenriched uranium to be used while still allowing a chain reaction to be maintained. Other plants (PWRs and BWRs) that don't use heavy water (which is very expensive) must enrich their uranium in the U235 isotope in order to be able to maintain a chain reaction.
would you say a nuclear engineering degree / career is worth it?
If a person is good at math and physics I believe it is an exellent career. Very good pay and excellent working conditions.@@annakatebertolet2703
Adding to this, the engineer above is 100% correct, and what is also interesting is you should look up the Oklo natural reactor. 2B years ago the ratio of U235 to U238 was higher, much closer to the 4%+ we see in the "light water" reactors, such as those used in the US. In order to use "regular" light water, you have to have a higher ratio of fissile fuel, ie more U235. Back 2B years ago, an area with lots of natural uranium flooded and resulted in a natural nuclear reactor. It can't happen anymore. If you want a reactor you have to either enrich the uranium, or use heavy water so you stop wasting so many neutrons.
yes and this is why the candu is able to use natural uranium and depleted fuels from other reactors as opposed to enriched fuels. Its also removes proliferation from the mix as enrichment is not required so the fuel is not desired as weapons grade fuel. The candu does have a positive void coefficient similar to soviet RBMK however the moderator choices and control rod configuration almost make it negligible and make it much much safer, while still allowing active refueling.
Liked! But it isn't that *_easy_* to get a pressure high enough for a temperature to drive the highest efficiency wind turbines. The standard CanDU runs at 310 °C, but there's a design with an oil coolant that does much better. The PWR needs about 150 atmospheres.
Its designer, Alvin Weinberg, solved this problem with his Molten Salt Reactor design in which the coolant itself carries the fuel. It is inherently meltdown-immune, because the entire reactor circuit has a plug of solid fuelsalt, that will melt and dump the fuel into a basin that extinguishes the reactivity. It also solves the two problems of ceramic solid uranium oxide, the temperature of the is equal to the coolant's , and the nuisance fission product Xe-135 is a gas that is collected in the inert gas argon at the surface.
I enjoyed the video. It was like a trip down memory lane as I worked at Bruce A as an operator for almost 10 years back in the 70’s and 80’s. At that time, the RL Hearn power plant was decommissioned and many of the staff moved to Bruce A and Pickering A/B. The Hearn was originally coal fired and was a large contributor to smog as it lays on Toronto’s waterfront. Scrubbers and a huge smokestack were added to reduce the impact the pollution but it wasn’t enough so it was converted to burn natural gas. After being decommissioned in 1983, it sat vacant for a long time but was eventually became a popular location for the film industry. I wouldn’t be surprised if Drake and Bieber have filmed music videos there.
I hope that Japan and Germany return to nuclear power and an alternative for coal and natural gas.
Fascinating. Thanks for the info. Will try to visit it soon.

LOVE this ! I sure hope you have other (much bigger) outlets for this - 28 views, as of this viewing - ain't gonna cut it -- need to latch on to, I don't know what/who. Go forth and do good.
I'm trusting in the process. Work hard on the research, writing, cinematography, editing and hosting. And then hope those with distro ideas and/or $$$ jump in to help.

It sure does get interesting about the 15-minute mark. Was it all to get over the 20 minute mark? Nice to see all the mentions at the end, like Bieber and Drake, superstars
Darn, I always thought that it was Celine Dion who did it.
But in all honesty, as an aspie I would have preferred more nuclear power plants and less pop culture, I don't understand the latter.
It's known as Canuck humour eh.
Hahahahah, what a fucken guy. One of my top 5 lakes?! Did anyone catch the joke?
Oh yeah. Comedic relief. That and the music superstars. ;)
I remember going to Toronto in the 90s and 2000's. We lived in north eastern Ontario in a small town and our air was extremely clean. You could see the air quality difference even with the windows up. Once you got out you could smell and see the difference in the air. You couldn't see the CN tower even from the top of the drop zone at wonderland. I went to wonderland a few years back and I could actually see the city, it was amazing.
I love Bruce! I was also impressed when I went there, it so gigantic. I cant quite believe we walked right past the reactor coolant pumps. At Diablo Canyon, those are inside the containment structure (and theyre huge and loud!). It was really fun leaning about the CANDU design. I also *love* that the company was so open and welcoming to your visit. I hope to see more and more of this content that humanizes nuclear. Nuclear is for humans, to help us live better lives with less impact on the planet.
Hey, isn’t that what decouple is all about? 😬💪🏼⚛️♥️🌎

Crazy important story Dan has to tell in this video. Fantastic work.
There is a full length Decouple podcast episode featuring Dan. It's really worth checking out if you're interested in just transition and the mindset of workers in GHG intensive industries when their jobs are threatened. Dan is really a great plainspoken communicator about these very real and very human issues.

As a custodian at the University of Oregon, it is sad that all the heating for the campus is generated by burning natural gas. 😢 It would be awesome if we had a nuclear reactor that both served as a heat source, a generator of electricity, and a source of neutrons for experiments.
I'm trying to get into the Nuclear Reactor career - so this video was fantastic -- thanks to all of you - and Thank You Dan, for allowing my kids and their future kids etc etc to live in a cleaner world.
THANK YOU so much for this powerful and persuasive case study. Clean, modern SAFE nuclear power suffers so much from negative PR and false information and fears purveyed in mainstream media.
Hi how are you Susan. Greetings from . Kindly man, Hope you're safe from the covid. Have a good week and stay safe 😄 Alex
So amazing Susan, I am looking forward to watch the next.
Amazing! You CANDU it!
Bruce isn't the world larges powerplant, it's North-America largest, and that's it. There are 3 Nuclear powerplant and 15 other power-plants (water, wind, gas, nuclear) that are bigger.
Bruce is capable of 6.610 MW
Hanul (Korea) is capable of 7.268 MW
Kori (Korea) is capable of 7.489 MW
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa (Japan) is capable of 7.965 MW
The total biggest powerplant is 3 from China and 1 from Brazil/Paraguy: 22.500,16.000, 14.000 and 13.860 MW
You guys are the bees knees! Have you guys ever thought about taking on/deconstructing big youtuber FriendlyJordies's anti-nuclear videos? I've always enjoyed his videos, but it's frustrating when he gets into topics regarding Australia's clean energy transition because he's so obviously clueless but speaks with such absolute conviction.
Great Video! I was in the control room when the last coal generator came off line in Ontario for good. You are wrong in saying the closure of Nanticoke removed coal from the grid. It was still in use.
Great stuff! Thanks to Bruce Power for providing this access! The benefits for humanity could be huge! Hopefully it gets embraced. Im a power plant operator too and this is a pretty awesome sight to see. Nice video!

I worked at the Bruce as a Fuel Handling Operator for 25 years. The other seldom spoken benfits are the contribution to the Cobalt 60 Isotope industry! Many other isotopes are being added to the Candu production capabilities as we speak. Someday soon(hopefully) the bomb grade plutonium waste from the rest of the worlds reactors will be burnt up safely in Candu's.

16:08 - 16:15 liked that part the most, especially Photoshop Drake
this was awesome! sharing this with everyone who's got doubts about nuclear
it is weird when I see a video in my youtube fed and I recognize the people in the video as people I walked passed on the Bruce Nuclear site. I worked at Bruce B though not at A. My grandpa was a Nuclear Operator at Douglas Point many years ago. Walked into the office there with a resume and they hired him! over 50 years ago now...
Correction on the spent fuel pool it’s actually theorized you could basically swim right up to the spent fuel and almost touch it with no ill effects as long as there are no open or damaged fuel bundles
The general public is ignorant to nuclear power and its safety. The heavy water moderated candu reactors are incredibly safe and reliable. Also thought bruce was the second largest plant in the world. Wish they would do some nuclear here in manitoba but they are obsessed with state owned hydro. The fact that these reactors can use natural uranium as fuel as well as depleted fule from presurized light water reactors amongst others makes them very versitile.
Tremendous work putting this together! Highlights the tangible benefits nuclear has for both the “just transition” and coal phase out :)

did we miss the part when Ont Hydro walked away from Bruce and British energy saved it
We definitely did. Unfortunately the format doesn't allow for telling stories in their full complexity. What's your takeaway from that moment?
@@decouplemedia we as a community and a province were fortunate that the British Energy rep on site beat the busses for investors that saw the Nuclear advantage . When Ont hydro was a public utility it was run by professionals then it became a crown corp and is now run by political appointees not a very good idea. Ontario has Duncan Hawthorne to thank for getting us off coal
But where's the final resting place of all that radioactive waste?
Very good question. There are a number of answers, most of them involve burying it. We recently filmed at the potential long-term site in Ontario and there will be episodes on waste coming up both on the podcast and here on Decouple Studios in the coming months.
For now I would say that nuclear waste storage is a challenge, but it is a lesser and lower-risk challenge than the waste challenges of other energy sources. For example, much better to have a small amount of waste stored deep in a solid, stable bed of rock with little-to-no chance of it ever escaping, than to have an enormous amount of waste up in the air transforming our climate and causing preventable illnesses.
This reminds me of Cedar Creek, a nuclear plant i visited many times. Good memories!
Amazing video - I wasn't aware that you could get so close to the spent fuel.
To be honest, when I arrived that day I had no idea I was going to be that close either. Very cool surprise.
Nice! Love this video. Great to see Bruce Power supporting content creators! This comes with considerable benefit to the future of Nuclear energy
Very grateful for their sharing access to facilities with an independent media group like us! There hasn't been much non-corporate coverage.

Here in Japan, my university students are amazed to learn that Ontario nuclear (and hydro) were key to eliminating coal from the provincial power mix. And “progressive, climate-concerned” academic colleagues simply want to ostrich the facts.
Interesting. What do your students tend to think about the restarting of Japan's reactors?
@@decouplemedia Most of the over 200 students are in favour of restarts. My course covers critical minerals, capacity factors, and related issues concerning how to decarbonize. I also make it clear that there are no “correct” answers to quizzes and exams. The course is in Japanese with, so the students are not constrained by language barriers. The course resumes next week, so we’ll examine German policy shifts and public opinion.
Which university do you instruct at?
@@andrewdewit4711 I'm very curious how much distrust of TEPCO and their implementation is the concern instead of the technology itself?
@@holysirsalad On the anti-nuclear left in Japan, it's the technology per se. Tepco is just a convenient framing of allegedly unsustainable nuclear.
I have a hard time believing this, but I think you're being serious. I had no idea about Bieber and Drake! That's amazing!
One of my goals is to figure out how to support the nuclear industry more.

The Drake and Bieber stuff while hilarious. I'm not sure it works.
It seems to be hitting 50/50. Really love it or hate it. But I think in the future I'll try to separate the more serious "how a nuclear plant works" stuff from the mock investigation goofy stuff.
@@decouplemedia I think having some fun totally works. I like and enjoyed the idea. It also depends on your audience right? Myself I was super excited for some Bruce Power / Mighty CANDU action. Then a bit dissapointed with the Bieber/Drake stuff, I wanted more CANDU. Also there was some serious stuff in here regarding a just transition and radiation exposure. But now we can't really use this video if we want to share it to discuss those issues, because it takes such a strange tangent. Now that I'm thinking about it. I think the Bieber / Drake stuff should've been it's own video. It could've been a "conspiracy theory" investigation ala Ancient Aliens. Essentially a lot of silly tongue in cheek fun contained in one video. Also if it's intended to be a stepping off stone for people that are more interested in Drake than nuclear, it would be ideal for that audience. That audience I'm guessing would care less about a nuclear reactor operator. But yeah, keep on injecting some fun. There is no reason for anything discussing nuclear to be stuffie and boring.
I was lucky enough to be on construction when Bruce 'B' Units 7 & 8 were being built/commissioned. It was an experience that I'll never forget.
Life is just to love and to be loved 💝 Love alone can Conquer the World.

As someone who researches electricity supply globally, and wants a career path in Nuclear, I legit had no idea about Drake and Justin, as well as Ontario's coal pollution causing smog. Very fascinating and never expected this from those artists, I legit thought it was a joke at first.
Just like the Sudbury copper mine reclaimation, other places too should look at Ontario and take inspiration. These problems may seem impossible but Canada has proven them wrong, and its time for the world to take notes
When I was a kid years ago my private school took a field trip to a nuclear reactor...its safe to be in there...and really cool.
Cool video, I don’t like that you made it seem like Canada was lying about Ohios pollution blowing over the lake though. It wasn’t the sole reason for smog but it was a sizeable one, and still is.

Well done. Talented script, production . And funny. Not easy to do.
Gary you are doing the world a favour expanding people's understanding of rooftop Renewables.
Central generation is an economic nightmare for the future.
When you think it through.
'Monkeys' or roofers can install solar panels.
Every building on the planet has a roof.
Roofers can not run nuclear electric generators.
Super duper safe nuclear reactors are too expensive to allow low trained operators.
So millions of safe nuclear electric generators will need 3shifts every day of the years including weekend, public holidays, sick leave, training days, emergencies back up staff.
Highly paid and scarce nuclear staff.
The extra generators will need extra national grid capacity. More costs.
Grids TRIPLES the cost of new generators.
No fossil fuels QUINTUPLES (×5) the number of generators.
Roof Monkeys look extremely cheap even if you put extra on your roof.
Electric vehicles will be parked 23hrs every day as usual and have a battery big enough for the all day drive when needed.
Billions and billions of massive battery storage at every building, and billions building connected to the existing national grids.
The existing national grid is massively UNLOADED as it does not have to distribute to the billions of ends of the grid.
Nuclear is a decades and decades to build solution and will be the stranded asset nobody will be able to turn off or demolish for 100years.
FMD.
Nuclear deal.
Nuclear electricity needs government disaster guarantees and cash flow guarantees and renewables suppression by government government grid building expansion.
Military budgets exploding. Taxation increasing to cover government spending.

Your title is not right. The actual biggest plant in the world is in Korea. And one precision. In operation refueling was made to produce plutonium during the atomic bomb development run. Maybe that's the largest plant in number of reactors but have more powerful reactors that this kind of units. Did you tell how much electric power is rated one of the reactor in this powerplant ?

What about water ? Nuclear reactors must be permanently cooled using a cooling circuit supplied with cold water drawn from the sea or from rivers near the facilities. The cooling of nuclear power plants is the first item collected and the third source of freshwater consumption in France (I don't know about US and Canada), behind agriculture and drinking water. This consumption of water, which is essential for the operation of nuclear reactors, is all the most worrying in a context of climate crisis where conflicts around the use of water have already erupted and will get even worse. Extreme climatic events, and in particular the long periods of drought, multiply and cause an increase in the temperature of watercourses and the drop in flow of rivers. This poses a significant threat to the capabilities of cooling down a reactor. Most of the water withdrawn to cool the reactors is then returned to the watercourse, but at a temperature much warmer than that of the withdrawal. This supply of hot water has significant and often insufficiently considered effects on local biodiversity.
Bruce NGS uses Lake Huron for cooling water. It is not at risk like rivers in France.
Nuclear enthusiasts are thinking too small. That is their biggest failure.
It’s the way of the future. The sooner everyone realizes it the better
