It’s one of the funniest moments of The Office. Just so simple but such a clever input. Couldn’t have been more appropriate or worded any better.

I always felt the way Angela laughed with Kevin was unscripted. It just looked too sincere.

Angela and Jenna mentioned in their podcast that they were actually breaking character in this moment, they just left it in because the editors thought it fit I guess! Kind of interesting!

Can we please talk about 0:37 and how Jim had the STRAIGHTEST face when Dwight accused him of making up all of those diseases, while the rest of the cast simply couldn't keep it together. Absolute perfection.

I love how Angela is always religiously oblivious. She didn't focus on Michael's very obvious plea for help, she instead chose to focus on him saying Jan was the devil.
It wasn't a plea for help.
@@DrJ-hx7wv did we not watch the same scene? He says "You're right! You're the devil! I'm in Hell!" which is Michael and Jan (poorly) subtly voicing grievances with each other while upholding a scene of civility to their guests. Michael is clearly trying to tell the others "I'm unhappy, please help me" without saying it, and making it seem like he's just playing along with Jan. If any of that seems inaccurate to you, please tell me how you observed this scene. Because I can't really think of any other way this could be taken.

I love that little detail of Jan just waiting patiently for Pam to ask about the door before she just tells everyone anyway. Such a subtle but funny depiction of her narcissistic qualities.

i’m in college for a theatre degree and i must say that it’s one of the reasons i really love when we do improv games, because of how everyone builds off of one another

0:30 Angela Kinsey is very underrated... You can see in the clip (and in most bloopers) that she couldn't control her laugh 90% of the times... Still, she had to play a cold shrew... I don't know how she pulled that off
Acting. And pretty much the whole rest of the cast were laughing. She was probably filmed pretending to laugh about a dozen times.
She actually has a hilariously dry sense of humor; she's toured college campuses (including UCONN, my daughter sent me clips of her show) So funny!
Also her smile is the most beautiful smile I've ever seen
It's even better that Kevin is pointing at her like " geez you couldn't hold it in lol"

ever since i learned a while ago that steve didn’t know about the 9,986,000 minutes song and was genuinely crying, it makes that scene even more heartwarming

Dwight's a nut, but deep down he's a good guy.
Rainn Wilson talked about it in an interview, he said it was scripted so that they show that Jim and Dwight are not in that friendly relationship yet, and he mentioned that it was one of his favorite moments of the show.

I think it was more so shock bc he was only supposed to hit the ball while Dwight slowly went down as it “deflated” but instead popped it and Dwight immediately hit the ground. You can even see him jump back as soon as it pops

When signing Meredith's cast Jim wrote John Krasinski, his real name
the skippy ball one wasnt, and probably some others, jenna and angela talk about it in their podcast office ladies, for the skippy ball scene it was well prepared and they had like 5 balls on set lol

Most of them are scripted. Jenna and Angela describe that the script is usually well written and detailed. Even the unexpected ones. Stuff like Jim picking up Pam and her shirt coming up in the karate match even the shirt coming up was scripted.
@@raafmaat the ball bursting was unscripted. The ball was meant to slowly deflate, but it burst out instantly causing Rainn to fall to the ground, and that caught everyone off-guard. That's why the scene cuts out so fast.
I honestly think Michael's Dinner Party was a call for help on his part.

finding out that dwight reaching for Jim was unscripted makes me want to cry because that scene is one of the most sincere scenes I've ever watched from the show.

I still think that Melora Hardin's performance as Jan was much above excellent. Her screen presence was absolutely magical. The way she carried herself, her expressions, her speech - everything was flawless. They should have let her character stay regular in the later seasons too. Brilliant actress ❤❤
For real! Her expressions were EVERYTHING, I couldnt keep a straight face not a single second she was on the show and she got the hardest laughs out of me!
She was just exquisite in her role. Perfectly played the "strong on the outside but a little crazy on the inside" character.

Watching dwight ask the anatomy questions so softly and looking like hes going to start laughing shows how great that usage of improv was
My favorite part about that scene is the number of takes it took to get that right.
God 4:35 I love Steve's slow transition from a serious situation to the laughter he can't control inside him. Looks so real!
"or Karen from behind" is also one of the funniest lines on the show, when Phyllis gets flashed, and Michael says "Did he even see Pam? Or Karen from behind?"

I love that Steve Carell had no idea that the cast was going to sing to him but I just realize that since Steve also improvised the kiss between him and Oscar in that early season that that line Oscar sings “I forgive you for kissing me” can actually be from actor to actor and not just from Michael to Oscar, that’s so funny!

Steve is a master of improv - his cues to allow for his partner to understand his setup and where to go. The kiss with Oscar for instance. Steve sets it all up with “I’m gonna take this up a notch” - this allows his partner to expect something unexpected and to not show any reaction or tense up in response. The kiss improv is not only naturally hysterical but masterfully crafted on the fly
I never noticed Jan smelling her candle after Michael says she sues. That's hilarious.
Fun fact: Jim was supposed to hit the fitness ball with scissors and Dwight was meant to slowly descend as it deflated. You can see Jim jump back in shock

6:52 I love how you can see Jim break character in the last few frames as he tries so hard not to laugh
they should have done an entire episode of just improv, trying to collectively build and maintain a plotline throughout an episode with no script.
That would have been a logistical nightmare. Having to figure out all the camera set ups on the fly and not knowing when would be the best time to shoot certain scenes and if they could stay on any type of schedule. Not to mention the person in charge of continuity would just die from everything they'd have to keep track of. Sounds like a fun idea but it would never work practically

Props to the whole gang for not cracking up at Michael's flasher impression. That's even more impressive than the impression itself.
improvisation doesn't mean it's been filmed in one shot. they still might have taken a hundred shots and selected the best one. except for maybe the inflated ball since they didn't have spare props if they didn't expect Jim to break it. and in that scene you can hear muffled laugh and smiles.

About the kissing scene between Michael and Oscar, everyone talks about how amazing Steve's improvisation was, but I feel that few people appreciate how Oscar made this scene even better with his reaction. Both are great actors.
I challe ge you to find one actor in that show that stayed for more then a season with bad acting skill.

So the kiss was improv.. So then giving Oscar a company car, vacation, and everything that followed was literally added to their script... That's pretty insane

The long vacation was added so that the real Oscar could work on another project and then come back to the show, according to a podcast interview he gave recently.
I think they offered those perks so that Oscar wouldn't sue the company for Michael outing him, not about the kiss.
He may have gotten that anyway cuz doing all the stuff before that was technically harassment and Jan had already told him that Oscar let it slide the first time but could have pursued a lawsuit so I seriously doubt that it was rewritten bc of the kiss

My favorite is that one scene where Michael is trying to make Phyllis feel better and says “the only thing I’m worried about, is getting a boner” 😂

1:02 It's so funny to me that Jan feels so threatened by Pam that she feels the need to talk down about Michael to her, despite that fact that Pam is by far the person who knows the most about how dumb Michael is.
And is probably the least attracted to him in the office. Yes, even the majority straight guys would probably statistically be more attracted to Michael than Pam is. Jan was always too erratic to see the logic in it though 😂
The goodbye Michael song was genuinely heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

That should have been the last line of the show. Take it out of the wedding scene. Everyone's sitting inside the office and Michael walks in and sits with them for a bit, then Creed gets taken out says his piece. Pan back over to Dwight and Michael, they hug and Dwight says I can't believe you came. That's what she said... The End
@@patkohl7936 I also felt like Michael should have had the last scene in the show. Not to take away from the real ending, it was nice and the symbolism was good too, I just felt like Michael didn't have much to say in the episode and I would have loved for him to narrate some final words.
@@JacktheRah fun fact, michael only had 2 lines because then he'd have to get credited, the writers didn't want NBC to ruin the surprise so they did everything they could to hide that michaels in the episode (such as make fake scenes to show the producers just to slip the real episode in last minute so no advertising could be done). not even the cast knew michael was coming back until the shooting day. it makes the scene really heart warming knowing how much effort went into hiding it!

I learned a few years back that Michaels send off song was unknown to him, so his reaction is genuine. When you see the pain he has leaving this family behind he has worked with for so many great years, it brings you to tears.

One would not be mistaken to think that the whole series is an improv. That's how everyone was involved in their characters. This is one of those shows which has started a new era in sitcoms. Every character just makes you feel like a human being. You never feel out of touch with any moment in the series.
In these remote work culture times, it makes you wanna go to the offices mire than ever.
Trust me, no. I go into my work part-time with a bunch of replacement hires. They're not cute and goofy like Dunder-Mifflin.
Nobody wants to go to the office; real life is not a sitcom.
The finger in the pants was bold...even for Steve Carrell. I have tremendous respect for his bravery and genius in coming up with that. That scene must have been a real challenge for everyone.

The exercise ball was written to be stabbed, and it did on many takes but it deflated slowly. This was the last take and it popped and deflated so quickly that John Krasinski said that that was the hardest he'd ever seen someone hit the ground. You can see (and hear) john exhale and jump out of frame in surprise at how fast Rainn hit the floor.

If you just stab it straight in, it will deflate slowly. If you stab and rip at the same time, it loses all the air instantly with someone on it.

That's a very common film/tv practice called Greeking.
After Jim pops the orb for a second you can see Stanley looking utterly shocked, I think that's why they zoom in so fast because the actor genuinely didn't know what to do or what was going on.
Jim immediately hides too, he said this in an interview.

Evidently in rehearsal, the orb was supposed to slowly deflate and Dwight gradually sinks out of sight. In this take, the scissors hit a seam and and down he went!
Because it was supposed to slowly deflate, like they did a lot of tests and it only blew if punctured in a specific point, which Krasinski casually hitted hahahaha
