That's why they wrote David Brent more sympathetic and caring, closer to what Michael was like actually, in the original UK version. Because he wasn't a bad guy. He was a bit silly, starry eyed and childish, but he wasn't 'the worst boss', something that the media really started to push after the first series.
If you watch the UK one(I remember taping it on video when it was out first since we have BBC in Ireland) you will see a difference between the portrayals of him.
I spent years in college working in call centres and offices and I have had some absolutely awful wankers for managers one or two genuine cunts. I'd love someone like Michael for sure. Kindness is sadly in short supply in this world.

If you are caring and kind towards a subordinate it makes it really tough when you have to inevitably be a strict manager. 13:28 and at that exact moment, Michael realised that Wallace in fact did not get it. He still thinks the reason Michael was upset and why he drove all the way to New York is because he cancelled the party (and the figs) without telling him and not because he deserves to be treated with more respect after 15 years at DM. He felt that there's no point in talking sense into Wallace anymore because of Charles and the fact that he's constantly tried to avoid him for the entire day and he quits.

It was pretty dumb of corporate to start micro-managing their one profitable branch. They came to regret it when they lost clients to the MSPC, but even before that, they should have stuck to the mantra "don't fix what ain't broke".

It was the Golden Ticket idea fiasco that caused David to hire Charles. That was when David’s patience ran out. But yes, hindsight...should’ve had hindsight.

12:49 This scene always make me tear up a little bit for Micheal. He putts in 15 years of service at DM with out missing more than a couple days & even had David’s back in the Jan firing lawsuit, but David gets his new VP of sales hire to be the blocker middle man between him & Micheal in order to avoid speaking.
Steve acted this scene out flawlessly.
