Long Term CB1100EX Owner's Review (Take 2)

- Hey guys, sorry if this looks familiar- The audio problems I was having with my last one due to a faulty recorder were driving me nuts and the weather was nice, so I just jumped out and re-recorded the first portion of my review.
In this video I review my Honda CB1100 EX Motorcycle after putting almost 25,000 miles on it. I try to talk about the bike a bit, talk about what it's like to own/maintain, and then ride it and give you my impression of how the bike handles. I apologize for the intermittent sound issues, the iphone is not an ideal recording device and wind noise was pretty bad up in the Angeles mountains where I filmed part of this. I was in Los Angeles at Griffith Park for the new parts and on Big Tujunga Road, Angeles Forest Highway, and Angeles Crest Highway for the ride portion
Other than the exhaust the previous owner added (which I have a separate video of), I've only added a Honda luggage rack, heated grips, and a Ram X-Grip phone mount.

Own a 2013 CB1100 for more than 8,5 years. I rode over 72.000km with it. Many more km to come. Never had a problem with it. It just works. Did some oil changes every 12.000km, replaced when necessary front (lasts up to 13.000km) and rear tire ( > 25.000km), once the secondary chain drive, spark plugs and air filter. That was it.
Each km with the CB is a real joy. I like different engines. The Inline 4 is a fine one. Did some long trips with the CB to Ireland, the UK, Norway and the Balticum for example. You can do everything with it except motorcross and race track. Will keep my CB for many more years. It is real solid and beautiful to look at.
I have a 2013 CB1100 and coming from my younger crotch rocket years I can say this is a joy to ride and perfect for my age now. I have owned many many bikes since 12 yrs old, first real proper motorcycle was a 1974 750H2 and went to other crotch rockets over my life. I owned a Honda Nighthawk 550 in the early 90's for a while and it was so nice and smooth that from there I didn't really go back to the crotch rocket/sportbike config. Got the middle age bug and wanted a bike really bad this year and found a low mileage CB1100 and am glad I did, it's a tame beast that will get you down the road if you need to and will pull you along at low revs through town.
Thank you for the review. You misspoke about valve adjustment intervals. You said that if you do not hear any noise, your valves are probably fine and do not need adjustment. That is not true. It is very common that valves will get tighter over time, not looser. Thus, they will make no noise but the potential engine damage is quite significant. As an engine runs and the valve opens and closes, it can slightly wear the valve seats and so the clearance for a valve will decrease. If a valve gets tight, it will not seat properly against the cylinder head when it is supposed to close and will not be able to transfer heat away from the valve to the surrounding head. This can do significant damage to a valve.
By the time you can hear the noise, damage has been done to an extent
My first bike was a super clean 1982 Honda CB900F. I still miss it. This looks like a great bike.
Probably one of the most enjoyable bikes I have ever ridden or owned. You need to find one before they are all gone. Honda has axed the CB1100 from their line up as of 2021, and in the USA, no new ones since 2017. I own this one and a 2014 DLX. Two bikes that make me remember why I started riding in the first place decades ago. PS...this bike has a 4 into 4, which is an aftermarket pipe. 4 into 2 is standard.

Miatas are great cars and so so much fun to drive! They're lite and very nimble. All I did to my Club Nd1 was changed the whole exhaust system with the full set of Goodwin Racing ceramic headers and full racing exhaust system.
As a result, more torquey, HP, beautiful sound, and more fun!
@@SennaMXClubND I had the GWR cat-back on mine! Great sounding exhaust but CA makes doing headers or mid-pipes basically impossible.
Those retro gauges and needles are fantastic. Looks just like my old '76 Suzuki TS.
Thank you for a great video! I didn’t even know this bike existed until last weekend when I saw one in traffic and was instantly drawn to it. Have a vintage bike, 1962 BSA A10 Super Rocket, can’t just ride that everyday and want a bike that’s reliable and won’t cost a fortune to keep. Now just need to find a CB1100.

Solid review A lot of bike for reasonable money. Durability low maintenance costs reminds me of the CB500 and 750 4 cylinder bikes that Honda was famous for.
Thank you for this review. Well done. I miss my 85’ CB650 SC 😔. It was my first MC, and I can’t say in words just how wonderful an experience it was! I don’t & have been able to swap bikes whenever I felt like it, so I have lusted from a distance Honda’s in-line 4s that have come out over the years. This particular bike seems perfect for in town driving sans no wind protect. (I commuted on my old CB, and had to install a small but effective windscreen…).
I love the naked look, and how much easier routine maintenance is with naked bikes. Thanks again, wonderful looking MC, and looks so enjoyable to go for a ride then my current ancient 2002 Kawasaki Concours (22k only still)… .
I have not ridden in over 20 years. This bike reminds me of what my Dad had in the early 70's.... At 51 years old now, I am seriously considering getting back on a bike - and this is most likely what I am shooting for here in the Dallas Fort Worth Market. Thank you for the video.
Good luck! It's a great bike to get back into, really tame but enough power on tap that it's not boring either. They've gone from fairly undesirable (high original MSRP) to unobtainable at this point, I think, I haven't seen any for sale in a while. I hope you can get back in the saddle!
A bit late to the party here, but just landed a beautiful 2013 base model CB1100 with only 1100 miles on it last week. Have owned plenty of previous bikes including an FJR1300 and a bought-brand-new-in-1980 CB750F SuperSport. Have loved the look of this bike since first seeing it in 2013. Plenty of power for cruising and passing vehicles, but certainly not head-snapping like the FJR or my GSX650F, but I don't care. That's not what this bike is for. Fit and finish are excellent and the riding position, for me (5'11") is perfect. Replacing the uncomfortable stock seat with a Corbin next week. At age 67, this is likely the last bike I'll buy and it's everything I wanted. Every day I want to get out and ride on it.
I have a 2014. It's a good secondary bike for me. I bought mine for the retro look, Honda reliability, and the fit and finish. It stays pretty clean riding it here in Los Angeles. My primary bike, an FJR, fits me better, and is a freight train compared to the CB1100. The suspension on the 2014 CB1100 needs upgrades for my body size. Being a naked bike in the purest sense, freeway riding at 70+ mph is not enjoyable for me, but I am 6'-2". It is definitely not a drop a gear and disappear bike. But it is a very capable, fun and easy bike to ride, as stock, and looks so nice keeping my FJR company in the garage. I do hate the location of the reversed horn and turn signal switches after riding my other bike. The only time I use the horns on my bikes are by mistake, when I forget which bike I'm on.
Hey I just wanted to say thanks for the videos, if everything works out I’ll hopefully be replacing my 1981 Suzuki gs450e with a 2014 cb1100, the look and feel of older bikes has always spoken to me but frankly I have spent much more time wrenching than riding and with a Michigan riding season and college I need a bike to ride. Anywho I love the videos and hope you keep it up you are a natural.

Excellent review. I love the look at this bike and love the quality Honda motorcycles. It’s a bit big for me perhaps too big. I’m a very experienced rider however, I’m a small guy 5’6 155lbs. Curious if there are some inexpensive modifications to accommodate lowering it just a bit. Thanks

The styling very much speaks to me. I watch every video on the 1100, I would say this is the most beautiful, sensible bike of all times! I am thinking about getting one to complete my collection. Too bad you can't see new ones at dealers. I have a 1999 Kawasaki Voyager XII, a 2016 Triumph America LT and a 2019 BMW R nine T Pure. This would make a perfect addition. Good video, thanks!
Wow! I found mine at a dealership in Arizona with 4700 miles, red and a 2017, bought it and had her shipped to me and I love it! So many people see it and ask me how I found it and love it, she’s so smooth and beautiful
@@mariowoodsN5 I found mine at a small dealer in San Diego with 20 miles on it, a 2013, they shipped it to my house in Santa Clarita.. Immaculate, rides like a butterfly, sounds like a bee!.
I have the 2013. It is sort of heavy to push around (3x my weight) , but once you get moving it is really well- balanced and is nimble. My inseam is only 29 inches, so I just automatically lean my hips off to the left of the seat and put my left foot down at a stop. My butt is small too, unlike most American men, so the seat width works well for me. Your legs are almost directly under your butt, in a horse jockey position, which makes it fun to ride. I have fallen over several times when riding ALONG the side of a hill and my legs weren't long enough when I stopped. At 560 lbs. it's hard to keep the bike from falling unless you are on level ground.. DEFINETLY I recommend an engine guard and sliders. I have 37k miles on the bike and it never had a mechanical issue, except for rear seized brakes, which was my fault. I adjusted the chain and didn't realize I then was supposed to adjust the rear brakes.... A several hundred dollar lesson to me..........Not the bike's fault or the Honda engineers. I have seen videos of a guy actually popping and riding wheelies with this bike. It pulls good and is almost as fast as a crotch rocket.
Love the video….I live in La Quinta,Ca. I have a 2014 Deluxe with a full Whitehouse K10 kit installed (Red/with gold stripes) Been wanting the Pipemasters but hate to give up my double walled head pipes….do your head pipes stay shiny?
Had a 1983 CB1100F that made quite a bit more power weighted 20 pounds less and had a bigger gas tank 5.3..I don't think I would be happy with this de-tuned version..However I'm glad they kept it going..

I'm sure you'll love it! I believe they're just the OEM Honda crash bars and racks although I've used aftermarket Japanese luggage racks that worked well, and would recommend the T-Rex Racing or SW Motec crash bars as an alternative.

@@SashaHonda14 The center of gravity is pretty low, so wait only really becomes an issue if you have a short inseam, or if you knock it over and have to pick it up. But under normal circumstances unless you’re particularly small… You should be fine my 5 foot 5 120 pound girlfriend was totally fine
I have the 2014 DLX. It's a secondary ride to my '99 Valkyrie Interstate. Love the CB1100 for ALL the reasons you state here. Those don't look like OEM mufflers - What brand are those?

I have same bike-The main complaint is the tube tires....along with their odd size. Can you recommend tire replacement other than Dunlop’s. I know I can use tubes in a tubeless tire.,.. any suggestions appreciated.

Nice review. That really is a beautiful bike. I ride a Kawasaki Z900RS, and this Honda seems similar, comparable. I'm surprised that the Honda is 85 lbs. more, though. Still, a heck of a nice bike, all around.

Hi Guy's, thanks to this guy for a proper review, so many fools on here walking round their bikes no comments revin em up treating them like a Disco hand bags from the 80's, yet he puts real world miles on them crashes his first and buys another but the point is this guy uses his bikes,he doesn't gush over it, knows its flaws but I get just like me ( CB1100RS) there's something about these bikes that after 42 year of riding i cant put my finger on , is that called "soul"? this is as close to an analog motorcycle as your ever going to get from now on.My seat is 60 miles bearable then its an instrument of torture every outing is more like meditation than moto - GP rant, well done,would love another up date soon.MIKE 98 your right the horn indicator position is "shit" 42 years of muscle memory training binned on purchase!ha ha ha.

Yes, that is correct. The 2022 model will be the last year. The air cooled four just can't meet the newer emissions standards.
In the US they only made them for the '13, '14, and '17 model years.

Is it better and more fun than a CB400SF? And yes, a 400cc is much smaller, but its a big bike with 4 cylinder VTEC with 53HP and tbh its quick around 0-100kph at below 5 secs and cheap on fuel, not to mention very reliable. Has a very nice 1980s appearance (my generation), and very light and low and comfortable seat, would this bike offer a better riding experience? Open to comments...

I’ve got both the RS and EX so I’m a big fan. IMO they are well built, handsome, comfortable all rounders. A bit of a Goldilocks bike, with enough of everything you need to have a nice ride. No it’s not going to scare you or rip your arms off but why rush? The engine and gearbox work very well together too, sounds very nice on standard pipes too. Ignore the quoted numbers, relax, and just enjoy.....
I’ve got a Z900RS but keep looking at the CB-RS... the suspension looks more in keeping with the retro theme. Does the RS feel noticeably better than the EX?
@@unenthusiast Hi Luke. The RS does ‘feel’ a bit more modern due to the changes in spec but remember the motors and gearing are exactly the same. So it’s still got the lovely lazy, high geared ‘waft’ about it. I haven’t ridden a Z900RS and I’m sure it’s a lovely bike so it’s hard for me to give you more. A French chap called Mr Kiddo did a great review on them both so if not already seen do a search on CZcams. Might help you?

Just the honda OEM rack although I've also used the Kijima rear rack that I purchased from Samurider as well with success on my 2014.
My Goldwing has become too heavy for me. This bike with the same automatic transmission would be a great fun bike.
What exhaust system is on this particular bike? I notice that that's not the standard setup the CB1100 comes with and I'm interested to know which aftermarket exhaust is on it. Thanks!

Fortunately I haven't! I do worry about it because tubed tires are more prone to blowouts, or so I hear, but I have been lucky with no punctures or anything yet. I do carry roadside assistance for my bike but since it's a Honda I've never been stranded.
In the future i would like know to how this bike ride in comparison to the new rebel 1100. I would definitly buy this bike over a litre sport bike.
No comparison completely different . Go ride them both and see what fits you best

Sorry for the late reply, that's pretty subjective! I love them, but not sure I'd pay what's basically a fifth of the bike's cost on an exhaust personally. I was lucky the previous owner was not so stingy, he only rode it a thousand miles, too!

I have the same bike. I have 3 complaints. (1) Front Brakes Squeal coming to a stop enough to scare small children (2) Vibration at 4300 rpm and (3) Rear tail light rattles. On the forums there is no fix to any of these issues. You don't mention any of this. Do you have the unicorn without these quirks?
My brakes did have a small squeal at very low speeds and light pressure, but it was MOSTLY resolved with application of a little copper anti-squeal compound to the back of the pads. It was not a big deal, and my new 2022 Speed Twin's brakes are even worse. No particular vibration or tail light issues, I think yours may be the unicorn given I've never heard anyone complain about them. They should be easily resolved, the tail light assembly isn't complicated, I'd screw down whatever was loose, maybe find what's vibrating and ensure the gasket is properly placed (or place one).

I was puzzled by the fact that Honda is not selling CB1100 or 1300 retro design products in the US and Canada market while Kawasaki is very successful in selling its very popular Z900RS similar retro design bike.
Hi. Does anyone knows if the Honda CB 1100 RS 2018 model was introduced into USA??? due to regulations of emitions and such??? I want to buy a used one but I need to know if will be able to buy parts in USA and shipped them to muy country in case I need them in the future. Thanks.
Currently, 2017 was the last year they were sold new in the U.S., who knows if they will reintroduce it back in the U.S.

This is a great honest review. I have the 2016 and tbh I prefer the tank on my one (with the old style logo and the silver stripe on black bike…and the all chrome/alloy engine as apposed to the black). I have three bikes (2022 GSX250 for commuting, 2021 GSXS750 for hooligan riding and this for cruising/touring). Love this and everyone says this is the best looking of the lot.
Ps the original tire very difficult to find.
I get 64/65 miles to the gallon unless travelling at 80 or 90 mph. Its awesome. Check out the relationship between the tacho and speedo needle. The 6 speed 3000 rpm at 70 mph in top. Very torquey, great on British roads. Love the 4 pipes on this one.
How much does a valve check cost for this bike?
300 at my dealer ....add 100 if needs adjustment

I don't! I have thought about selling mine, with my new job I can't ride as often. They're pretty hard to find now! Maybe post on the cb1100 forums.

It is a heavy bike. About 550 lbs. Could be a problem for a less experienced rider. I have a 30 inch inseam so it's not a problem for me.
If she knows how to handle such a 'heavy weight', no. When you ride the CB it is easy to handle, like a bicycle.

I hope you find one soon! I don't work for a dealership so I can't be of much help. They've become really rare and shot up in value quite a bit recently from what I can tell! The vehicle market right now is pretty crazy.
I know this review is about a year old. There are no new old stock bikes out there. There are some good used bikes out there but not really cheap. I want this bike but it is becoming a unicorn that doesn’t have many aftermarket accessories. So, unless I can get it for $6,500 for a 2014 or newer, I might just give up.

There are three for sale on my local craigslist and like 35 on CycleTrader nationally- not a TON but they were never big sellers. They're out there though.

Completely unnecessary, but you're right that's what they call for in the manual. Having done the spark plugs myself many times, they don't even need them at twice that interval. I think it's crazy since the manual for the 2017s calls for 8,000 mile oil changes, to change the spark plugs every oil change is unheard of for a bike like this.
It really looks every inch of a 1980's Honda.

According to the CB1100 owner's manual, oil changes are to be done every 4,000 miles following the first break in oil change at 600 miles. The manual strangely calls for new plugs at 8,000 miles but according to NGK, the company who makes the factory plugs, they are good for up to 30,000 miles. So I don't get wtf Honda is talking about. Also, I get 60 mpg on the highway and 50 mpg in town with traffic so your fuel economy will vary. I don't know why he only gets 45 mpg that sounds low.
The manual for the 2017 has longer service intervals, the 2014 manual I had was crazy! I've heard of others getting better fuel economy (and others still getting worse) so it definitely does vary.

Depending on your riding style and the climate you're riding in.
Mine is 4,6l/100km averagely with 2013 5 gear CB1100 over 72.000km in 9 years. I don't push the bike hard but ride it very relaxed the whole year through.

So 10hp more than the old 750 magna V4 with about the same torque. A bit disappointing from 1100cc. (20lbs heavier bike too).
I agree the power could be beefier, but you're also comparing an aged V4 water cooled 'muscle bike' to a retro, air/oil cooled UJM I4, so it's kind of an apples/oranges thing. The Magnas are cool bikes, too, though.
While not cheap- it is pretty easy to get near 100whp out of it with basic intake/exhaust and tune. My CB1100 makes 103whp 76wtq with more coming in spring time.
You can reflash the ECU which would remove the torque limiter below 5000rpm. That and removing the top speed limiter.
Some companies that offer a reflash will even raise the rev limiter. I wouldn't recommend that tho.
Totally different animal-air cooled and tuned intentionally for broad torque delivery. It has plenty of speed for this suspension

WOW: this thing is a "PIG"!> I've owned a '81 CB900C and it had a 4.4 Gal. tank.... I've got 50 mpg on Hwy...... about 36 City. The HP = 84,,,,,,,, the "Chain-Drive" CB900F > 89 HP... I've currently owning/ RIDING: my "Beloved" > Yamaha XS1100 H, it's a '81 model with a full fairing, and side bags...... I've owned , an '04 Yamaha FJR 1300..... I wished: I had that power > (143hp), and , I've had felt the power of the ANTI-LOCK,,,,,but : TO HELL w/it! I want the OLD BIKES> Better, can do more > WITH THEM

I have a 2017 CB1100EX. My sidecovers are made of PLASTIC, not polished aluminum. The turn signals and brake light housing are made of chromed PLASTIC. I love the bike, but for $12,000 It shouldn't have any plastic.
The turn signals are, and there's good reason for that (they are not rigidly mounted, metal would be heavier and more prone to breaking off in case of drops whereas these have some give), but the sidecovers that come with the bike are absolutely aluminum, at least in the US. The previous owner of your bike must have swapped them, there are a number of aftermarket matching-paint plastic sidecover options. Unless you're referring to the airbox covers etc which are plastic as well. On the other hand, making every single surface metal would also increase the already heavy weight of the bike. I'm pretty happy with the fit and finish of the bike, all things considered!
@@davidrome No, I bought the bike BRAND NEW at a dealer in Villa Park, IL. My sidecovers are silver painted plastic. My airbox covers are black plastic with a vertical chromed bar. Maybe the dealer ripped me off and kept the real polished aluminum covers. Still, the bike is an 1100 cc 4 cylinder fuel injected cruiser. I can go 55 in 6th gear, drop it to 3rd gear and floor it, and it flies to 100 mph in a few seconds.

A customized CB never looks better than an original CB. In fact it looks much worther in my eyes.
My sidecovers are made of plastic.
If you have a '17 they wouldn't be from the factory. The 13 and 14 have plastic covers, but they're technically different trim levels.
