In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov presents to you the 5 best chess opening traps in the Queenâs Gambit, which follows the move order 1.d4 d5 2.c4. The gambit (pawn sacrifice by White) when declined by Black with 2âŠe6, we arrive at the variation Queenâs Gambit Declined. In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov covers the traps for both continuations 2âŠdxc4, when Black accepts the gambit, and 2âŠe6, when Black declines the gambit.
Also, he shows the traps for both White's and Black's sides. Some of these traps are classical, which you may have seen already if you are a more advanced player and have used them to surprise your opponents.
And what is special about all these traps is that you can play them âfreelyâ - meaning that even if your opponent is smart enough not to fall into these traps, it wonât affect your position in any way. You can just continue playing normal moves, and the position would be balanced.
Spoiler alert: The fourth world chess champion, Alexander Alekhine, actually missed to see one of these traps.

That last trap is absolutely savage
But in that too, the king can go to adjacent black square of queen instead of taking knight, then queen is saved
@@pattabiramans No, it can't - the black Queen prevents that.
The last trap couldn't the opponent choose to castle?
Man I'd cry if I someone did that to me.
Haha yeah
At 58 years old I'm just starting my journey with chess. So much to learn. I already knew the basics, the names of the pieces, how they moved etc... But from there I was/am lost. It's addictive though, and every time I win a game it makes me want to play more. Even when I lose, I learn. Thanks for making these videos so I can continue to learn how to play better chess.
Great to know. Enjoy the journey. It is a fun one!
Join a local chess club. They can be fun, and there's usually a couple good players that will help you out with some tactics and positions.
@@jeremyweems4916 I recently attained the title of Master with a rating of 2200
Chess is one of those things where answers just mean more questions.
Questions are a burden too others answers a prison for ones self........The Prisoner tv series . Best ever, second is Danger Man which is who No6 is despite McGoogan's denials. Episode called ' checkmate ' as well...........
This guy can show you a lot of perspective on lanes and forks.. piece development.. But the choices will always offer big questions..
Use professional perspective.
this and programming
3rd trap is called the Elephant Trap. 4th trap Qa5 is the Cambridge Springs Variation. The 5th trap is Lasker's Trap. There are some other traps a little later in the game around moves 10-14 in the queens Gambit but mostly it's just a safe opening that gives you good endings and king safety.
Tell me which ones
when i play the queens gambit , my opponent doesnt do these stuff
Just the way your learning queens gambit, there are various ways to destroy it....
Î2
yup exactly.
there was a lyrics block on you'r board it doesn't clear to watch on video
Super videos. Nice teaching style. Thanks
In minute 1:50 you get a knight, not a rook.
After the move queen to f3 the opponent plays knight to c6.
Queen captures for check and then black moves his bishop to d7 - defending the king and at the same time defending the rook with his queen.
Yes, my sentiments exactly! The "Knight to c6 move" is a vacating sacrifice. Which allows a "discovered protection" for the Rook, when the Bishop comes to d7. Better to lose 3 points instead of 5.
yea i was coming to comments for the same reason
and also defending the pawn on b5...
Or black plays bishop b7, QĂb7 and then K d7 saving Rook. But the essence is you are a whole piece up.!!
Please read Nd7 instead of Kd7
I like GM Smirnov's annotation style! Very clear, friendly and non-boasting.
That exchange for a Knight was epic! Blew my mind. Nice one!
Best video, simple and fruitful.
I just love this lesson! I haven't played the Queen's gambit (both sides) for a long time! I look at it this time with 'new eyes'! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for sharing this traps because i really love the d4 opening
I was doing a training program in Lucas Chess and it went over the Queens Gambit, really happy I played it because it's become my favorite opening by far. I tried starting with the English but I just don't really enjoy the middle-games that come from it.
Such an informative video!! Thank you!
Great video! Look forward to trying these out đ
Wow! Really helpful stuff. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Thank you for this
Brilliant video
Clearly explained, thanks mate
Very cool review, thank you!!
9:23 âStandard Queenâs Gambit Movesâ White normally wonât play Bd3 when playing the queenâs gambit, it just wastes a turn when the pawn takes, bishop takes.
Thank you
Awesome video! Thanks.
I haven't seen these! THank you so much! You earned a subscriber.
The traps are what make these openings cool. I just finished a game and my opponent fell right into them. Great job Igor!
Cool traps! Thanks for sharing this!
Great help đ cheers mate
Excellent.
Will try soon
Great Video thank you đ
Thanks
I knew the first one and the last one. I learned the last one as the Lasker Trap, very beautiful trap
Thank you. Did really enjoyed that.
Glad you enjoyed it
thank you very much for your valuable tips.
Thank you this was very helpful
Thatâs terrific thanks
This video really helped me. I just wanted to mention that for the first trap, I think thereâs a way out of losing the rook as black. After Qf3, black can sacrifice the knight to save the rook. After Qxc6+, black plays Bd7.
found that too, its sort of an "only move" situation to even attempt to hold
Very good. Great video thanks
I love the video and would like to cover some opening traps with kings pawn openings for white. Keep it up!
What if black goes bishop e6 to defend the pawn on the first trap?
Really appreciate your videos âșïž very educational đ
Excellent video. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great tactics!

Hope you have success with it
Can you please make a similar video on the King's gambit? Thanks!
The first trap given in this video comes up very often in regular games and especially in blitz games. I always play the Queen's Gambit as white and I have become knowledgeable in the traps in this opening.
Can't you save the rook by playing knight C6 then bishop D7?
@@viktorhultcrantz8625 yes, idk why he didn't mention that in the video. But you still win the knight so you're still winning
Great tactics
Amazing bro!! Nice video
Nice way of explaining it. Thank you!
You're welcome!
This is a super helpful video thank you so much. I am wanting to impose my queens gambit knowledge and this has helped. Are there any common traps for Rudy Lopez? I like to play that as white but it seems to often end up with a very positional game, just positioning and taking a long time before any exciting options become available.
subbed great stuff
Excellent...
Great đ

HI. At your question at about the 6:12 mark, why can't the king castle instead of moving the pawn? While it would box in the king, it shifts the balance of the board.
