I'm really glad to watch this match again as a srilankan. What ever happened now, what a legacy we had. This was started of golden era of srilankan cricket since 1996 till 2015.

As a Sri Lankan it was a wonderful day in our life and remember the Pakistani people who were supported Sri Lanka like their home team is playing there. ( Small boy with the mother waving Sri Lankan small flag - He may be now his 30 s ) :) Respect all !!!

1996 World Cup was an important milestone in history of cricket where a country who was a minnow in the previous editions eventually won the won the world champions title.The leadership of cricket legend and former captain Arjuna Ranatunga won the World Champions title for Sri Lanka in year 1996.Last but not least the man of match during 96 world cup final was the former cricket legend and deputy captain at that time Aravinda De Silva who single handedly blew the Australians apart with a 3 wickets haul and followed by a century thereby guaranteeing a sure shot world champions title for Sri Lanka.

There is no doubt veteran opener Asanka Gurusinha led the foundation for Sri Lankan cricket team's only ODI World Cup title by scoring 69 runs in the prior to arrival of De Silva. HAD Gurusinha retired after 99 World Cup instead of 96 World Cup Sri Lanka would have avoided the ghastly league stage elimination in the World Cup on English soil.
The greatest day in the history of SL Cricket. To restrict Australia to 241 from 137/1 and then to eventually win comfortably after losing both Sana and Kalu was simply stunning. Has there been a better performance by a player in the WC final than Aravinda? Starred in ball, field and bat. It was a phenomenal achievement by our tiny nation against all odds and in the backdrop of civil unrest, led by Captain Cool. 17 March 1996 will be forever etched in SL cricketing folklore. what a day for sri lanka ... i was 20. more than 50 persons gathered to our home to watch this match. some guys came to our home morning and stayed there till next day. there were all ages. from children to very very old male female. more than 50 persons inside home and out side home. most persons bought food and drinks, snacks they were enjoying that day crazy. me and all of them will never forget that day. 1996 march 18.. thank you aravinda and arjuna.. and special thank to australian team for dropping catches..
