LS Swapping a Chevy Faster Than You Can Say AVALANCHE

- Amberghini found a project for me, a 2010 Chevy Avalanche that needed an engine swap. I called J&J Auto Wrecking, got a low mile 5.3 out of a 2011 Tahoe coming, then went to pick up the truck. After picking it up I found that it had about 10PSI of oil pressure at idle and was misfiring badly, this may have been damage from Active Fuel Management, or just a pump failure. The new engine was far more complete than I needed it to be so we stripped it down so we could start the swap the next morning. The swap is a quick in and out, once it was done I replaced all the consumables and one O2 sensor. This truck is ready to hit the road again.

Hoovies Garage Did you drive that white Fiat 500 down through Ponca City about a month or so ago? I was behind one and it shot smoke out with every gear change.
Wow YT really needs to give ppl their checkmarks back

Here I am 3 years later rewatching this video because I'm about to buy a 2008 Avalanche with 230,000 miles and know this will happen to me.
How much u spend for it? I just grabbed one with similar mileage for 5k
I’ve spent 6k with 230xxx miles… I’ve placed 20,000+ miles on it and took me out of places with the 4wd
@matthewsalvador9783 just bought a gmc sierra 1500 2008 with 90 k miles and spent 6.5k
Have a 02 Avalanche 280,000 still running good!
My wife's 08 suburban dropped one afm lifter at 220k miles. I replaced the entire afm system with news parts for under 800 dollars. The problem is the afm system runs with lots if solenoids that activate with oil pressure. People dont change the oil often enough and all the solenoid screens clog up drying the afm lifters out.
The AFM lifters get oil regardless of when they’re active or not. It’s a separate oil circuit that collapses the lifter for cylinder deactivation. The AFM lifters don’t dry out.
I personally love GMs. At least they are consistent lol!!
EXACTLY! You know what's wrong, they fail at the same mileage, parts are cheap... it's the dream 💯
@@WatchJRGo And you always know what tools to carry. 8, 10, 13, 14, and 15. You could replace almost anything on a GM with those tools lol.
Just purchased a pull-over from your store. I'll rep you in a upcoming video after the shirt gets here. Love the content.
Love the vids randy! I’m only 16 but I watched every one of ur vids for almost 2 years now!
Back when I was a counterman we called them generic motors. So simple to look up parts for.
If any engine (stock) can make it to 200,000 miles without any previous major work, I'd say it was a damn good one...
I believe this truck belonged to a friend of mine's son, who passed away in an automobile accident last year. May he RIP.
Love the 80s music starting at 7:18

Much love and respect from Europe. I discovered your channel recently, and i enjoy the content...
Sweet, what country in Europe? Nice Cheyenne BTW.
Thank You for Fixing one of my Favorite GM Vehicles and getting it back on the road two thumbs up 👍👍
Have several family members that drive GM trucks all got over 300,000 miles on them. They will last if you take care of them. When they do need work they are easy to work on.
J&J rocking it as always, they must be all jacked up on Liquid ice!
JR i'm always impressed with your work ethic and teamwork with your guys. Great channel and content as always!!!!!!!!!
Good job as always, and you are lucky to have Gabe, Josh and Zach to help you with these projects. Anything involving an engine hoist around here and everyone finds an excuse to be somewhere else!
dude your pumping out more videos than scotty kilmer,,,awesome!
He's fixed more cars in the last month than Scotty has in his entire 52 years of being a "mechanic".
It's pretty impressive considering Scotty is a hack who churns out the same Toyota worshiping content every single day.
JR should experiment with catchy titles like adding "stupid" to his titles. "If you can't swap a GM engine, you're stupid". Lol
MINIMOTOMADNESS except jr doesn’t tell bs

I have to say, that is the first time I've subscribed to a channel BEFORE they uploaded any content.
Looking forward to seeing you explore our "Ruin'd World"
Been a 18v Fuel Milwaukee owner for around 3 yrs now. Couldn’t imagine going back to air powered impacts.
So over air, plus this thing costs less than nice air impacts! 💪
You are my favorite car guy on youtube, thanks for all the videos and the info you share.
Your Dust Deputy is hooked up backwards; vacuum source enters at the top of the cyclone. Will work much better.
Just gained a loyal subscriber man love the straight forward videos man! keep it up
I can verify the low oil pressure on the engine pulled is from the valley cover. The oil pick up tube o-ring can be a factor as well. But an engine swap was probably the quickest solution you ended up doing.
In this episode I learned what an AFM/DOD engine is, and that AFM/DOD deletes are popular.
Yea afm cause heavy oil consumption and possible total engine failire
Very good work on this. Very quick. And thanks for showing via the speeded up sequences just how much it would help to remove the radiator and grill too ;)
GM engines do last a long time. My Saab had a 2.0L Ecotec engine and I sold it at 190,000 miles with the orignal powertrain and everything still working. Only a new alternator at 70,000 - that was it. I know people love to hate them but I have had only good experience with those engines.
👍Awesome video JR!👍 220k is great; tells you it was well maintained most of its life. My current daily is an 07 Tahoe with just shy of 290k!😳 Runs & Drives like brand new.
Also love the 80s music you piped in! 🎶
Love the use of the dust separator with the hoses on the wrong way. From the vacuum to the top and out the side. This is what creates the cyclone to separate the dust and heavy dirt.
Good stuff, JR...keep up the excellent content!!!
Glad to see a video, been having to watch hoodie in the mean time 🤣
Love your Vids Bro. Especially since you Coverde a few on Avalanche's Subscribed.
Impressive! (Except the dirty vacuum stream on the cyclone is the other pipe. The vacuum cleaner is connected to the upright pipe perpendicular to the floor). You guys are hard workers. That would have taken me all week.
Great video, Thank you for posting it. In future videos I hope we can see more of the work being done i.e. show the bolts to the different parts being worked on then jump ahead to bolts removed. I'm not complaining still loved the video.
Welcome to the club I lost oil pressure in my avalanche and put an ls1 back in it
That was awesome when you fired it up and it ran perfect
Make it look so easy! Great work.
I love how JR just climbs up in the engine bay and goes to work. I need friends like that.
I love watching your videos, you and chrisfix motivated me to start working on my car, I have done some pretty basic stuff like a full brake job with rotor and drums replacement and steering fluid flush, but boy, it is a great feeling after you get it done and working.
This is a nice change of pace.👍
Keep up the awesome work thanks for the amazing content your doing amazing work keep it up
Thanks Hayden 🍻
Great swap. Have subscribed to Ruin’d World too - I love urban exploration
Chevy Life !!! Swapping out my Engine on my 08 Avalanche in the near future hopefully if I go back with the 5.3 flex fuel I can find a low low mile engine
Thanks for sharing this amazing video.
Great video JR!
Lookin forward to your urbex adventures. Sick last name bruh
Awesome group effort with everyone on the tools..
Amazing work you make It look fun. Nice content. You should take over the warehouse 😁😁😁👌👌👌👌.
Great video! Can't wait to attempt an engine swap one day!
You’re definitely my favorite youtuber. Keep up the great work man!
Nice job, good looking avalanche. It should sell well.
Well that was fast. Good work, guys. I suspect that
Ruin'd World might be a hit considering that it already has nearly 1K subscribers before any video has been posted. That's a pretty good head start.
Jr you gotta good team love this shit!
Great job!
My 2015 Sierra has 255k no issues still going strong
That will be your go to tool those things are awesome 👍
Urbex is cool , heading over now , nice .
Wichita, KS should be the new car capital of the US with JR, Hoovie, and The Car Wizard putting out great videos!
Every time I change out an LS motor I crack the oil pan and change out the oil pump pickup o ring they are famous for getting hard and cracking leading to low oil or no oil pressure
My sister-in-law has an Avalanche that style. When I got my permit(long story) I begged her to let me take a lesson in it
Got over 300000 on my 95 Suburban up here in Canada, still runs like a champ
Stacy Dornan
Those TBI Chevy V8 engines will easily go 500K miles with proper maintenance. I have one with 400K that still runs great and doesn’t burn any oil between changes.
Is that in kilometers or freedom units?
lunisce
FREEDOM!!!!!!
Urban exploration I’m there!
You are feeding two of my great loves lol.
I think the hoses are backwards on that dust separator at 10:16.
It hearts my bow tie to watch you swap an engine that isn't bad.
Try this: instead of shouting out #Milwaukee(apparently they are deaf), every once in a while list the companies that HAVE sponsored or supported your channel in some way at the end of the video. Companies like seeing their names up in lights...that's why they sponsor races, sports events, build skyscrapers, etc. You guys really work fast & smart, esp. when the vehicle is engineered to be easily serviced.
5.3L needs the driver's side valve cover replased due to the fact the PCV is built into it that can cause oil to fowl the plugs...and FYI there is a small filter in that vally pan that gets clogged and also the 5.3L's have that active fuel management system and the lifters on cyl 1,4.6.7 can fail and cause a dead miss..just fixed that same issue on boss's truck yesterday...after everything was fixed oil pressure is around 50 when hot now and nomore dead miss...use only lifters from a dealer no aftermarket ones
What a great bunch of friends. JR your blessed. Enjoy the ride it goes by so fast.
JR really loves power tools
Clicked as soon as I could 🍻
Boom! 🔥
@@WatchJRGo awwwwwwwwwwwww. missed the engine and rad getting in
200000mils that is impressive! I am buying A avalanche today
Nice find!
You guys make it look to easy and glamorize it to much. I can remember spending hours upon hours changing engines in my home garage or in the back yard or the parking lot at college. When you say “we just have to hook a few things back up” thats a lot of crap to hook up on these newer engines. Never the less,I enjoy watching your channel... 👍
I dunno. If you're not changing to a different engine (year or size) it still should be plug and play, just more plugs. The harness is gonna land where it needs to be, it's not like you're wiring from scratch. As an aside, the quickest I changed an engine was in just over three hours. Of course it was a mid-'70's PU truck with zero emission controls and none of the countless sensors todays engines have.
John B. I know what you are saying because what I was changing engines on were late 60’s - late 70’s when I was changing engines. I’ve never changed one in 3 hours though. I guess I just didnt know what I was doing.... I was just saying that a short video doesnt tell the entire story when it comes to changing an engine....
@@mikerobbins5049 I see your point too. Even when swapping out for the same, you never know what kind of butchery a previous owner or mechanic has done. Another big factor in swaps is what part of the country you live in. Live in the 'rust belt'? You're gonna be fighting every nut and bolt that has to come off. Either way, it's all good. This video wasn't meant to be tutorial on how to do a swap.
I love my Avalanche. I'll probably be doing this one of these days it's at 170k, still going strong for now though!
What year?
@@glorialabarre3126 The one I have now is a 2005 with the 5.3 L engine, I had a 2002 about 10 years ago.
I’ve got a 2013 black diamond with 250k on it 💪🏻
Hi, first of, thank you for the great content, quick question, did you interchange the camshaft and crankshaft on the engines before swapping? Once again thanks
What obd2 tester do you use and also what app
Again great video
Don't be surprised if the catalytic converters take a dump. The MIL or as they put on the dash check engine light. If it has a severe miss fire the MIL will flash. During a miss fire unburned fuel goes down the exhaust where the catalyst tries to process it. The thermo reaction is so intense it destroys the substrate. Now if the owner heeded the warning and stop driving the cat's might be ok.
Nice video by the way. I used to have a 2007 Avalanche LTZ and now I have a 2008 Escalade EXT which is basically the same except the bigger 6.2 and all wheel drive and a few extra bells and whistles. Anyway I tow a large travel trailer on occasion with my Escalade and I put in a big transmission cooler. I took the entire front clip off so I could do a proper job mounting the cooler and running lines. The clip came off in like 30 minutes, another 20 mins removing the radiator and AC condenser would have exposed the entire front of the engine making an engine swap super smooth.
Just found your channel, good stuff! Wondering what OBD reader/software are you using?
Happy with 220 and mines at 260 still running amazing😅
sees a sexy tahoe coming down the road... nope it’s an avalanche 🥴
Good looking out to Amberghini for projects to work on !
Drive an avalanche of this body style thanks for showing me how possible it is my current has 247k miles on it.
What year?
If I got to pull the engine out of the Avalanche with Watch JR Goes and Gabes I would roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
The engine may be just fine.
Avalanches are known for bad oil pressure sensors.
The stuck lifter can easily be un-stuck.
Oil pressure could be low because the previous owner dumped alot of tranny oil in the oil to free the lifter
And the there is a cylinder delete, delete
Just repowered a 2014 Ram promaster 3.6 with 627,000 miles. Timing chains stretched to the point the cam was 7 deg out of time. Still didn't use any oil no smoke ran smooth. Bought it new drove every mile on it. 90% highway miles, travel all over the country. Transmission was rebuilt this summer. it's on you tube "500,000 mile transmission" I know guys with a million miles on chevy and fords in my business. It can be done.
Engine was probably ok until recently. Common problem is failure of the oil filter. Exact thing happened to mine. Lost oil pressure and everything on the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Checked oil sender and changed pressure sensor. Oil was bad. I changed it and checked the old filter and the inside looked funny. I started it and nothing wrong anymore. That was 3 years ago. I've heard of this happening a lot since then.
I have the same truck, I made it all the way to almost 280k( started around 210) before some electrical gremlins killed it. I intend to take the long block for a project bc it is still good.
How much was the engine?
Did you do anything to it before putting it in? Check anything?
I love avalanches so much yet most people hate them lol
FREAKING LOVE. It's one of my favorites... always looking for a Black Diamond edition.
@@WatchJRGo Had to sell my 2005 LT Avalanche, only had 60k miles, was loaded with every factory option but mother earth was reclaiming the truck. Living in the snow belt makes me sad :(
The 2nd generation 07-13 are beautiful. The first gen are a bit tougher to fall in love with.
I have a 2012 LT that is black like this one. DOD off👍🏻

Do you have recommendations on an inexpensive code reader? You seem to use some BlueTooth version in most of your videos, but I've never seen you mention which one it is and if there is one that you prefer.
Been driving GM trucks since 98. Most reliable trucks I’ve had, never left me stranded.
Haha, good one
Great job.
John Ross, another great video. But I don't see any vids on the urbex channel. Is it marked private?
Will drop this weekend 💪
I did a 6.2 swap into my avalanche. A little more "fun" than a direct swap but it's killer now! 450hp in an avalanche is FUN!
did it drop right in ? tryna go from 4.8 to 6.2 in my 2009 tahoe
@@ih8sp1das sure did! Needed lots of tuning after but mechanically it was easy!
GM has been getting better over time. But I'm still a Toyota guy in the end. I was also just thinking it would cool if you got a screenshot on your phone when you pull the codes and overlayed it on the video so we could get your perspective.
Hell ya JR you rock brother!! Gabe too!! Hi Ambergini wink! To bad you are so far away!! I have a 1985 Yamaha virago xv 1000 just needs fresh up ... Ran when parked 3 years ago just have to bring it back the right way... Let me know if interested is in great shape for the year!
