2019 New Yamaha 40 HP 2 Stroke Power Tinny Review

  • Snag'd Ep. 13.
    I've just done a re-power of my 440 Apache Stessl from a Yamaha 30HP 2 Stroke to a 40HP 2 Stroke. The difference is amazing.
    The 30HP weighed in at 55kg, the new 40HP weighs in at 84kg.
    The power to weight ration is great on both but the 40HP has a lot more grunt. The 40 has 3 carbies and 3 cylinder where as the 30HP had only 1 carbie and 2 cylinders.
    The 40HP top speed (remembering I am still running in the motor) is 50km/h. The top speed in the 30HP was 40km/h.
    Flathead was caught using a Berkley Nuclear Chicken 5"and they work that well it was only the 3rd cast!

    I'm glad you mentioned the weight difference of 35 kg ,( 77 lbs ,) between the 30 and 40 HP versions. I want to run twin engines but the 70 kg ( 154 lb ) extra weight of two 40 HP versus two 30 HP engines is too much. Looks like twin 30 HP for me with a different high speed propeller because i don't need the torque when using two engines. I guess i will have to live with the higher noise of the 30.

    Good stuff dave, im looking at an Apache myself cant decide if i want to stick with 2 stroke which or go 4 stroke only want 4 stroke because apparently most impoundments wont allow 2 strokes

    • @snagdfishing
      @snagdfishing  Před 2 lety

      Thanks legend! Yeah lots of impoundments don't let you in with a 2 stroke.
      If I was buying again I'd buy a 4 stroke but Max out the HP according to the boat.
      I quite like my apache, one down side is storage isn't the best. But that can be fixed with some framing, timber and a bit of welding.

    I'm about to do the same, and this just made my mind up. Was looking at a fourstroke but way too expensive, found a 2012 model like yours with low hours. I too have a 30 hp as well and on a 4:3 mt tinny its just too underpowered. Thanks for the upload. Whats the fuel economy like?

    • @snagdfishing
      @snagdfishing  Před 4 lety +1

      Great decision. The 30hp is way underpowered and a bit more noisy. The 40hp 2 stroke is much quieter and a lot more powerful. Plus the weight of a 40hp 2 stroke is much lighter than a 4 stroke. Fuel economy is around 15 litres per hr.

      Hey mate, been posting under my wifes account unwittingly , haha! Rod is my name. So, got the motor about a month ago, love it, holy it goes hard! Super quiet for a two stroke. Only thing I dont like is the gear lever on the tiller arm, gets in the way from holding the throttle comfortably. They should have put it on the other side of the handle I reckon, but still I'm stoked!

    Hey mate do you have a battery onboard for your nav lights/accessories and how do you charge it? Do you know if the 40hp 3cyl has charging capabilities out of the box or do you need to add a regulator/rectifier? Looking at purchasing a boat with the same motor but no electronics at this stage. Cheers

    • @snagdfishing
      @snagdfishing  Před 3 lety +1

      The motor can charge a battery but you need to buy that gear separately and plug it into the motor.
      I use a 100 Amp/Hr AGM battery for all my electrical gear including my minn kota. I always charge it up when im finished on the water with a ctek 7Amp smart charger (i leave it on charge and it trickle feeds the battery so it's always at 100%)

      @@MF-qw5wl I won this boat. Since owning, I've been through the noosa bar, been through plenty of rivers and estuaries and also fresh water lakes. Also out of the Brisbane bar as well. It handled everything very well. I'd probably enjoy a side console and a higher transom on my next boat. But I'm happy with the tinny 👌👌

    2 stoke over a 4 stroke?

    • @snagdfishing
      @snagdfishing  Před 4 lety +1

      2 stroke is lighter than a 4 stroke. 2 stroke has more power. 4 stroke is more fuel efficient. 4 stroke is quieter. I could go on and on haha. I'd be happy with both. For me and my boat, I don't want a heavy motor so I'd go 2 stroke.

      We are the same as you now, not allowed to sell 2 stroke motors any more. One of the last 2 strokes is the one I bought.

      That is a very good question i have a very detailed response to. You've inspired me to upload a quick 'Why did I upgrade only 10HP' video - that I will upload to my highlight reel on Instagram!!!
      In short, the power moving from 30 to 40 is incredible. The weight is another major factor. I am not sponsored!
