    Dyno Carb Tuning a 455 powered 1969 Pontiac Firebird with Oxygen sensor at V8 Speed & Resto Shop
    The only real way to know your air / fuel ratio for certain is to measure the exhaust with a wideband Oxygen sensor. In this case, this super clean and freshly restored 1969 Pontiac Firebird came to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop to have the air / fuel ratio measured and the carburetor tune corrected on the dyno by our technicians. The car is running a Pontiac 455 V8 and is hooked to a Tremec T-56 6-speed manual transmission. Fuel is provided with a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor, and the suspension and brakes have been upgraded for better ride and handling.
    The V8 Speed & Resto Shop team analyzed the air / fuel mixture and tuned the carburetor for maximum performance, as well as optimized ignition timing.

    The Carb looks much newer than 1969. I prefer late 70's Q-jets with APT to deal with the lean Idle issues with this gas. Trevor does an excellent job explaining what he is doing !

    "Quadra Bog"..😄 I haven't heard that term since the 80's. I love it, had a few 4brls, it's true, but sounded cool.
    My Chevelle had a 780cfm dual feed Holley, big difference. The Bird still had decent HP & Torque was great.

    I agree dyno stands do show higher numbers...field test dynos can break your heart if you don't understand the cost of transfer to the rear wheels. This car has plenty of torque and will be a killer off the line or light to light!

    Hey have you concidered a carbcheater by thunderhead 289 i think that it could be invisably installed and gives on the road tuning and drive options after a good initial carb tuning it will kerp a/f ratios spot on and keep idle lower thar stock.
    I had previously had bleeder valves on my carb vehicles for decades because of the weekly travels on roads that varried so radically in elevation. I would open valve while climbing and my power and economy would not suffer as bad as without.
    I am now finishing a 73 cougar convt. With a 302 streetboss. And will be installing the carbcheater to help with all the tuning issues due to the elevation here (rocky mountains)

    Is the system of this O2 sensor a
    “ SM -AFR Wideband DM-6 Gauge Combo (Gen4)" you used?
    And is this a complete system where all I would need is to install the adapter “ Bung” piece for the sensor to bolt into?
    And did you use it on each side exhaust individually or use one side only?
    thx

    V8 TV, old school here, I'm curious if you are aware of the factory installed 455 cam, that Pontiac discontinued after one year because it idled so rough?????

    • @V8TV
      @V8TV  Před rokem

      Well, we're familiar with the Ram Air IV cam which came in 400s that idled pretty rough. It was actually the first computer designed camshaft and made great power in those cars. 455's liked them on the street as well with the right compression and heads.

    • @bartbullock9742
      @bartbullock9742 Před rokem +1

      @@V8TV I worked at Blue Max in Dallas when I was a young man, and I found out from my Pontiac buddies, that Pontiac discontinued this cam after one year in the 455, because the car would rock, I know this because my buddy had an all factory, exhaust headers intake, it was making 510 horsepower and 570 ft lb of torque, yes he would run 98 octane, and push on the timing, these numbers were verified on a dyno, and the automatic was faster than the four-speed, it was just so difficult to get it to buy even with 10-in cheater slicks, I'm telling you this story because I have watched this car turn consistent mid 10s 127 to 130 mph, and while out street racing, he would pop the hood people would look at that bone stock factory motor, and think they had this race in the bag, I seen that car run down crotch rockets and all sorts of fast bikes, it would look like the race was over, and he would real tem in, if you can find you an old school Pontiac guy, you will learn of this cam, there was a time before the junk yards figured it out, in the early eighties, you could purchase all the parts at the junkyard, usually around 1500 bucks, and think about it my brother, 5500 RPM redline, the motor is literally bulletproof, and nobody knows but you.

    Scrap the ugly wagon wheels and thin tires on it. Put either 14 or 15 inch Crager SS mags or Keystone Rouge or classic mags or Chrome Reverse wheels on it instead. That will make this car look much, much better than this wagon wheel and thin tire crap they put on cars today.
