Ep. 264: Crater Lake | National Park Oregon RV camping kayaking hiking
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 15. 07. 2024
- Established in 1902, Crater Lake is the fifth-oldest National Park in the United States and the only one in Oregon. The park centers on the caldera of Crater Lake, a remnant of the destroyed volcano Mount Mazama.
The eruption of Mt. Mazama formed a large caldera that was filled in about 740 years, forming this beautiful lake with a deep blue hue. The lake is 1,949 feet deep at its deepest point, and depending on how you measure it's either the ninth deepest or third deepest in the world.
We're boondocking for the week of the July 4th holiday right up the road from Crater Lake at Diamond Lake Recreation Area, from which we'll explore both lakes, the upper Rogue River, Rogue River Gorge, and the town of Prospect. We'll hike to Parsony Falls, Mill Creek Falls and Barr Creek Falls, and go kayaking at Diamond Lake!

"Cat", here! Damn! We are Diamond lake bound! Thanks to you! Been to Crater Lake three times but never took the time to "look around"! Thanks to you, we now know what we passed up in our haste! "Haste makes waste!" And, in these times of "Putin high gas prices", it is wise to "hang around longer"! MUCH LONGER! Thanks a bunch for "opening our eyes" and the lesson of "slow down, take a more leisurely look around"! After all! "Life is just a GRAND ADVENTURE!"
Thank you so very much! There's much to see and do in that area, and much of it gets overlooked by most visitors.
@@GrandAdventure An obvious statement if there ever was one! Thanks for the response! Enjoy your channel! Keep up the very interesting work!
As always, Marc, thanks for taking us along for some great camping.
As always, thanks for watching!
I lived in prospect during the 90s I Made my way back after 25 years and loved being in that majestic area.
It sure seems like a neat little community, John, and all of the townspeople we met were very welcoming.
Crater Lake is such a beautiful area, but the Diamond Lake area is just as beautiful. So many miss that part of the area.
It sure seemed that way to us, Donaleanne.
very beautiful, thanks Marc.
Thank you as always, Joe.
Great job on this video. It is no doubt one of the most beautiful areas in the states. Thank you!
Thanks, and thank YOU for watching!

Thank you so much, Jesi! Here's wishing you a return trip in your future.
Hi Marc, we didnât have an opportunity to watch this episode until last night (Tuesday, July 26). Another great report! Thank you for continuing to publish great content.

My childhood stomping grounds. â€ïž My great great uncle James Sutton named Crater Lake. Diamond Lake is beautiful but the mosquitos are vicious đ makes for BIG fish tho. Youâre gonna love the paddling around Bend!
We sure did, Suzanne! And how cool about your relationship to James Sutton -- thanks for sharing that!
We don't doubt for a second that the mosquitoes can be ravenous down near the lakeshore, but even a half mile or so back as we were they weren't bad right at camp in the open area we camped in. However, go back 50 feet into the woods and it was a bloodbath.
Just gorgeous looking! I don't stay at parks as long as there is national forest ares to camp in. Stay safe
You do the same, Kurt. We're boondockers at heart as long as the opportunities are there. Thanks for watching!
Loved your adventure !
Thank you Judy!
Sure is a pretty country we live in. Great video Marc, very professional.
JT
Thanks JT! đ
Beautiful footage of the lakes and water falls Marc, What a great area . I need to put that on my places to visit for sure. Thankyou for all your hard work bringing us
this video. You make it look easy but you devote a lot of time into it.
Thanks so much Rob! Hope that you get a chance to experience this area yourself.
Wow Marc, just wow! Thanks heaps. The 2 Tasmanians 17000 ks from home in Quebec City!
Thank you as always, Leigh. You're in Mrs GA's home town, it's a beautiful place. Enjoy!
We were at Crater Lake in October 2020 and we had planned to camp somewhere around Diamond Lake.
Unfortunately, there was a big fire going through the Diamond Lake area and so the road heading toward it from Crater Lake was closed.
Didnât look like there was any fire damage where you took us in the video.
It was also quite smokey when we drove around the crater.
You showed some cool stuff and we will have to go back there in the future.
Enjoyed the ride in the Kayak as usual.
Thanks Marc!
Ram
đđŒđđœ
Thanks you two! Yes, there was a bit of fire damage on the road in from the North Entrance, but it wasn't too extensive.
I was there last October on a trip to Oregon. We visited Bandon on the coast first then drove to Diamond Lake/Crater Lake and stayed at the Diamond Lake RV Resort. It was very nice and about Ÿ full when we were there. We had to just drive around Crater Lake though due to an injury my SO got in Bandon but we still got some great pictures. We will be making that trip again and will try to stay healthy this time :-)
It's always good to have a reason to return Steven!
Pretty kewl boondocking spot your at here....Really do appreciate you showing the campgrounds around diamond lake as those would be up my alley....I see your in Idaho now...Father lived in Salmon, south of where you are for yrs ...Great area is the Sawtooth mountains if you get the chance...Glad i called them waterfall you showed in past conversation...There are a few more north of where you camped...Right now with the RV sitting in the driveway due to the wifes health conditions, am living through folks like you and a few more for my RVing loving fix....Travel safe, be well...
Yep, we love the whole Salmon/Stanley/Sawtooth areas of southern Idaho. This trip, though, we're just swinging east across the Panhandle. Wishing your wife a speedy and thorough recovery so you can get back on the road, but until then we're happy to have you along.
Great information video. Love the waterfalls. I bet it was a little tough paddling against the wind in diamond lake. Thanks Don
Thanks Don! It was more of a sidewind across the starboard bow, so it was rough but not too laborious.
Beautiful location Marc. Looking forward to seeing Bend, OR area next week!
Thank you Jim! We have Bend queued up for this Wednesday evening.
We're bummed we missed you. We were camping at Clearwater Falls off the 138 for 4th of July. Good to see you having a great time!
That would've been great to see you again Lucy. Wishing you folks safe travels and happy trails!
Another great video, Marc. We have been on the road ourselves all the way to Niagara Falls. The Pacific northwest is on our bucket list so we can't wait to see what you have. Stay safe, my friend !
Thank you George, and you folks do the same! Enjoy the journey.
@@GrandAdventure It's the journey...not the destination !
Iâm surprised you got such a close and open spot on a holiday weekend đđŒ nice video
Thanks as always TSM! Yep, we expected to be overrun for the holiday weekend but were thankful that didn't happen.
Wow, I had no idea. I mean, Iâve seen other videos but this had me scratching notes. Right now Iâm closer to Caribou in Maine, but Iâll have to get back that way. My spot will be where that white sprinter was parked!
Enjoy northern Maine! Hope you brought DEET. đđŠ
Great video Marc.. So i haven't been there on Wednesday nights. Hopefully I will be there this week..
Hope to see you then Timothy! Either way, we're happy to have you watch whenever you can.
what a beautiful lake. it almost doesn't look real. must be really great to travel around seeing all these wonderful places in our country.
Mickster, every day that goes by we feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to do so.
That is a great area. Missed the Premiere because we were exploring Mystic CT.
Enjoy! That's basically the area I grew up in.
With all the water shortages going on, you'd think they would be tapping that lake.
At the same time I can understand why they don't. There are no streams filling that lake, just rain water and snow melt. It took ~750 years to fill and it would be dry before long at all.
Certain things should be saved at any cost. It would be a sacrilege to touch the natural perfection. We have destroyed enough
Stunning. Fantastic job capturing those captivating views and surroundings. Best and most under-rated CZcams channel on the internet. âŁïžđ
Thanks as always E2!
Anything that looks like a gorge or is a waterfall is where I like to be.
Would have been awfully nice of Crater Lake NP to allow kayaking. Imagine being out there... no boaters... just stunning reflection of the caldera peaks and your thoughts
That would be utterly amazing.
Another great Thursday lunch hour watching your latest episode. I also just stumbled across the Interactive Episode Map on your website. It looks like you created it in 2019, but you should mention it in an upcoming episode for those (like me) who don't know about it. Hopefully we'll see a new truck episode in the near future. :-)
Awesome, thank you Pete! We've mentioned the Interactive Episode Map at GrandAdventure.tv occasionally, but it's agreed that we should publicize it a bit more.
Love Crater Lake, one of the most beautiful places we have been! Great job capturing it Grand Adventure! We actually stayed at the Diamond Lake resort as well! Of course the kayaking was the best part of this episode :).
Thanks Tom! FYI next week's video will include not one, but two segments with the new kayak, as well as a viewer-requested explanation of what kayak gear we use and why.
Thanks Marc... beautiful area. I always love the water in your videos. You always make it so engaging.
There are so many great places to visit in this remote area. I noticed there weren't any filling stations around. I guess you have to fill up before getting too far away.
I looked a Google Maps to see what was around there and there isn't too much. Maybe one filling station for every little outpost. And boondocking might take you off the beaten path for quite a ways.
I gather you are basically just wandering around in the west because your new truck isn't built yet. I kind of doubt you will make it east of Colorado, at all this year.
Gord
That was the original plan, Gord, but with no word from Ford I'm giving up and going wherever I want. As far as I'm concerned now the dealer can hold the truck until I get back.
You're absolutely correct, there's nothin' around there at all. The Diamond Lake Resort has two gas pumps but I couldn't even figure out the price per gallon, and didn't dare ask. Otherwise there's a Pilot about 30 miles in one direction, and the Prospect Store closer to 40 miles in the other.
@@GrandAdventure Thanks Marc. Yup, don't even bother asking if they haven't got it posted. It means their pumps are only set up to display dollars per gallon at 9.99 or less.
At $10/gal, it would cost $2000 to fill up a diesel pusher with a 200 gallon fuel system. How does that make any sense at 8 miles per gallon? That's $1.25 for every mile you drive. Just going to get fuel in a remote area could cost as much as $30 - $40. đ±đ„șđ€Ș
Have a great wander as you go. That means that next year you will definitely be heading east, as you will have exhausted the west this year...
Gord
@@gorrdd oh, we still have much to see in the West, too.
@@GrandAdventure Indeed... it will all be interesting for sure. You are gifted at video packaging your adventures.
Gord
I love your videos. So informative and such beautiful photography. Loved this one as usual!!
Thank you so much! We sincerely appreciate your viewership.
This was one of the best videos Iâve seen on Crater Lake and the surrounding area. Very informative, with great photography. If I visit the lake when travelling over from the UK this will be on my re-watch list. I really appreciate the information and effort you put in your videos. Thank you.
Thank you so very much, Hilary!
Good video Marc, you brought back memories for my wife, she's been to Crater lake twice, once with alot of snow and again with very little snow, she was stationed at Falcon Heights AFB years ago, again your campsite was amazing, nice kayaking trip too, travel safe.
Thank you Gary! Happy that we could bring her back there.
New sub ! Liked đđđ
Happy to have you along, thank you!
Great video Marc. Tried taking the kids there several years ago but got chased out by wildfires. Will make it there one day.
And a lightweight spinning rod on that kayak would be nice.
Ha! Yep, I've fished from the 'yak before, but getting even temporary licenses in each state I paddle in would get a bit costly.
We hit up the whole area we've been traveling the past few months a bit early, with the intention of beating feet out of there before the wildfire season gets underway in earnest. So far, though, it's been far better than last summer.
Yet another great video, Marc, and the timing couldn't be more perfect. We're picking up our new travel trailer in Pendleton on 07/30 and will spend four nights near Bend on our way back to Reno. We plan to spend a full day at Crater Lake NP; it's been well over 50 years since I've been there. Thank you, sir!
Glad it was helpful! Next week's episode will be from Bend, too. Congrats on the new rig!
Just picked up our Outdoors RV in Pendleton June 6th
Month and a half ago. Near diamond lake now and boy this area is packed.
Enjoy the new rig
@@anybodyoutthere3208 Thank you! 2023 Outdoors RV 26KVS Mountain Series. Order placed 08/31/2021, arrived at dealer 06/29/2022.
@@GrandAdventure Thank you, Marc! Hope to bump into y'all somewhere out here in the western U.S. one day!
@@NvFlyAngler oh wow nice. Yeah we are enjoying our 29TRX trail series. Yeah we placed our order 6/2021
Itâs a pretty tough rig so far.
Only had the TP holder bolts come out of the wall and patio doors donât open very well anymore. So gotta call TRV up in Pendleton about that
Weâve been looking south of bend at the different lakes but itâs a
Complete madhouse and out of control around here.
Weâre just doing some Boondocking at this point.
Hope Bend is fun when you arrive
Enjoy that 26KVS
Thanks for a beautiful video, loved the kayaking shots.
Wanted to verify regarding the boondocking area you parked in. Are you sure it was legal to stay there for free?
100% sure. Lots of folks use that area, it's on Forest Land and not expressly prohibited.
Great video! Can you tell me what life jacket youâre wearing? Thanks!
Thanks Wendy! The life jacket I had along while paddling in this video is an old Kokatat kayak PFD. However, I wasn't wearing it, I had it lashed to the aft deck as required by law. What I was wearing is a Seals spray skirt. I've since acquired (and much prefer for mobility and comfort) a Stohlquist Edge life jacket a.co/d/j5GHqI1 .
I noticed you have 3 Gopro's with you. One in the front, back and on your chest harness. How do you activate the ones on the front of the Kayak and rear? BTW, nice video.
Thanks Ron! We can control both of those remotely mounted GoPros with their app on the phone, but seldom bother -- we usually just let each run (with a large microSD card) and then choose our clips from it later.
BROTHER MARK, HOPE THINGS ARE GOING WELL. HAVE YOU DISCOVERED SLATE CREEK REC AREA NEAR WHITE BIRD IDAHO ON THE SALMON RIVER?
That's a new one on me, bud. I'll look it up!
how deep was the lake when away from the shore, enough depth for SUP fin or Foil board? Crater lake looks great did you hike down to the shore and take the shuttle boat to the island?
The lake is plenty deep. We didn't hike down to the shoreline of Crater Lake because the ferry was not running until the following week.
I lost my watch there. You think you can dive down to the bottom to look for it ? Thanks..
Don't worry, Marc will scan the whole bottom of Crater Lake until he finds it for you. He has special tools for that...đđ
Gord
@@gorrdd $100 reward if he gets it
I'm on it.
Hi Marc, a fantastic video. I plan on filming Crater Lake just before I leave Oregon heading south at the end of September or first of October. If you think my class A and trailer would make it to the spot you camped at, would you mind texting me the coordinates? Don
Thanks Don! Your rig would have zero issues there -- it's all flat and smooth, and the spot we were in is even "paved" with small wood chips. There's a Google Maps pin to the spot right in the video description.
@@GrandAdventure Thank you Marc, I should had looked. Safe travels.
@@CowboyBikerAdventures same to you, bud!
I watched your Iowa lakes show today. I think you said you would still be in Iowa for the next one. Is that this coming week, the 12th or are you behind a week or two?
Thomas, our videos premiere about three to four weeks behind real time to allow for editing and production. We're presently in central Ohio.
Hey Mark, random question⊠what is make/model of your kayak? Iâm looking to get into the hobby and I was wondering if you could help point me in the right direction. With what seems like hundreds of brands and models, itâs a bit daunting trying to find the right watercraft.
Hey Charles! The boat in this episode is an old Necky Looksha Sport, but it's probably ~25 years old. We recently acquired a 2018 Eddyline Fathom, and at the time we acquired it we did a brief video segment on what we look for in a kayak and why: czcams.com/video/jh5nPcKzI4E/video.html (that link will take you right to the kayak gear segment in the video)
