  • Oregon's Bay Area centers on the city of Coos Bay, situated on the shores of the estuary of the same name that stretches for nearly 12 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. While staying right at the Charleston Marina RV Park, less than a mile from the mouth of the bay, in this week's Grand Adventure we check out the cities of Coos Bay and Bandon, glimpse at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, explore the five coastal Oregon State Parks including hiking at Shore Acres and the Coquille River lighthouse at Bullards Beach, learn at the Coos History Museum and Charleston Marine Life Center, and go kayaking at the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.

    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a CZcams channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from "long-timing" for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.
    We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

      Thanks so much, Thomas! Add to that the consistently cool summertime temperatures in the 60s and 70s that you can almost bet your life on. That's why we ended up back on the Oregon Coast this season. With such a deep winter snowpack remaining at elevation, we couldn't run to boondock on higher ground early this summer to escape the heat, so it was off to the coast instead.

    Charleston also supports a massive pink shrimp fishery. I lived there for 20 years, as a commercial fisherman. I’m from Ojai, Ca. where I now live again, but I certainly mis Coos Bay. Yes, it’s a rough, blue collar town. But if you like the outdoors, good luck finding a better place to be. In my free time, I’d forage for wild edibles in the surrounding forests. Mychorizal (?) mushrooms. They need the living trees of forests to survive, and are highly desired in the high-end culinary market. Chanterelles, matsutakes, boletes, etc.

    • @GrandAdventure

      Nice! I'll confess that's a subject about which I have zero knowledge whatsoever. I could be lost in the wilderness and starve. 😁 We sincerely enjoyed our time in the Coos Bay area, just as we feel about the entire Oregon coast.

      We love Human Bean, Joe!! We always stop at the one in Lake Havasu, AZ every time we pass through there, which is at least once a year going to and from Quartzsite. There, they were thoughtful enough to make the drive-through sufficiently large that we can stop at the window even while towing our fifth wheel.

    You have a lot of the places we're known for. The Egyptian Theater in downtown Coos Bay, which you showed, is one of only 7 left in the USA. And our Wurlitzer organ is still played regularly!

    Ok we can probably establish that seals look absolutely adorable poking out of the water with their big nosdrils and those eyes but waters in which they swim... all that frothy white stuff crashing into the rocks... filled with everything that wants to eat them. Out in those parts tides are ridiculous. Some areas see like 20 feet of water coming in and going out. Glad that you turned around instead of getting into a boatload of trouble. I have been caught in high currents being carried off into timbabptu and it is no fun. I was actually looking into potentially (at least for my inflatable kayaks) get this fancy jet propeller thing (assuming I got a big fat bonus check and one was on sale for 50% off) I think its called bixby. It slides into where keel slides into on these inflatable kayaks so that when you are tired and exhausted, you could at least have that to help you sort of deal.

      Oh we did, Mike. As former sailors we checked the tides, knew what we were getting into and knew that the tides would be working against us. Unfortunately that Saturday was the only day we had to attempt the paddle of the estuary, so we launched our boats anyway. What we hadn't counted on was the strength of the wind that was working in concert with the tides, which made it unmanageable. Next time we will hopefully get all the way to Hinch Bridge.

      @GrandAdventure Kayak plans next week?? You need to try Beaver Creek (access across from Brian Booth State Park) - amazing views where we have seen eagle, blue heron, and more. It's a wonderful paddle that doesn't depend on the tides.

    I can't believe you went to Coors Bay 😂. It's the one place on the Oregon Coast that has no coast or beach I should say. I hope you went to Yeong's while you were there to eat.
    Bandon is great, but you forgot to mention Bandon Dunes golf resort that is on of the best on the west coast.
    My profile picture is from a stump that we found while hiking at Shore Acres.
    We were just north of Newport and the wind was terrible but when it is close to 100 in the valley everyone heads to the coast to cool down.
    On your way North make sure you stop at Kylo's in Lincoln City.
    Thanks for another great video.

      So much to respond to!
      - Au contraire! Bastendorff Beach is a massive, wide, sandy beach only a mile from the marina we stayed at on Coos Bay in Charleston. Only a bit further, Sunset Bay also has a beautiful, sandy swimming beach in a small cove.
      - "Golf" is for me a four-letter word. 😉
      - Cool profile photo!
      - Next week's episode is from Newport, actually.
      - We also visited the Sand Lake area along northern Oregon's coastline for our episode in two weeks, but right now we're already up near Olympia, WA.

      @GrandAdventure thanks for your reply.
      I agree with your assessment of golf. It's not for me, but for those that do like it, Bandon Dunes is a special place.
      Charleston is a nice area with great deap see fishing. As far as in beaches, I was referring to the city of Coos Bay, not the bay itself.
      Keep up the great work!

    You got me excited to go visit the sand dunes near Coos Bay with our ATVs. It appears that there are several campsites with OHV access to the dunes.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Yes there are, Marv. Also, if you're confident in your ability to not get stuck you can also tow your camper to one of a number of dispersed campsites actually on the dunes in Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. We did that ourselves back in 2016 with a Tacoma, sleeping in the bed with a shell. Finally, be sure to check out our episode 316 "Oregon's Three Capes" that will Premiere on July 19, when we'll actually bring you out onto the dunes where many, many folks are camped right on the dunes at Sand Lake Recreation Area. There the rideable dunes reach right down to the Pacific Ocean waves.

      Thanks for the feedback, Jen. Missing some things here and there is almost intentional, for it always provides a reason to return. As for our setup, I'm not sure what you're asking? The usual water hose/power cord/surge protector with EPO/sewer hose. We use a three-stage filtration system on our water, and a water softener. Most of these items have earned a dedicated video in our catalog.
