In our HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Mini Project TinyMiniMicro guide we see how this AMD Ryzen-powered mini PC compares to its competition and predecessors. As part of Project TinyMiniMicro we are testing over two dozen of these former corporate PCs to see if they work with Linux and can have a second life as a home server, lab node, and/or compact workstation.

Just got this on Newegg for $600 and it had all the features you wanted to add, including a 1TB M.2 and 1TB SSD drive (Win 10 Pro included): HP EliteDesk 705 G4 Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5 2400GE. Pretty good value for $600!
what about the wifi?
its on amazon for 230$
I wanna ask you something did you upgrade the process of this mini pc?
I just picked up 2 of the Ryzen 5 2400 models, It's shocking how cheap the refurbished units are right now, hopefully they are reliable.
Note: if you can find them used the 4HY46UT is loaded, it ships with a 500 M.2 SSD, has AC wifi, and has the additional 3.5 spare HDD tray open for addons. Ryzen 3 PRO 2200GE Quad-Core, 2 DIM slots (1 populated with 8GB) turned mine into a ProxMox VM server
This my plan proxmox, can it be upgrade to 3200 mhz ram?
Love the addition of guides and project ideas of how to use the minimicros.
Thanks! Nick's Plex guide is cool as well. More coming.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo sir I'm wondering if it can upgrade CPU to Ryzen 5 3600 or newer ? Does bios support newer CPU ?
I bought this online from a person selling multiple of this machine for only $100 per unit. I thought it was a scam but its legit elitedesk 705 g4
Dang. That's a steal. I wish I found it at that price.
Got mine for 94 bucks
Just purchased one for $85 couldn’t let the deal pass
This is the one we use in our office.
Ours have a WD Black 500 GB hard disk instead of a SSD.
The only problem is the onboard Realtek NIC which occasionally loses connections, needing to restart the PC.
I have some of these coming with the Ryzen 5 in them, 16GB RAM, 256GB NVMe. I'm aiming to use these as K8s worker nodes.
Super awesome
Honestly I didn't even knew these solutions exist, Excellent Review
This is so helpful, just bought mine in the PH. I got it second-hand.
I think we got the same seller. 8000?
@@critiqalerror YUP. OK for OL work and classes. got mine upgraded with 16 gb ram
did you get a wifi card?
@@ginoongemile Mine only had 8gb ram and no wifi card but seller (Nigel) was kind enough to include a wifi dongle. 16gb would have been nice though.
@@critiqalerror are you upgrading it to an NVME SSD?
@@ginoongemile No as nvme has no benefits
Every time I come to your channel, I can't believe you are still under 100K subs. Your videos are awesome. Perhaps we are too niche?
Great review as always. Keep it up STH!
Thanks!
I actually prefer the subdued look of the G3, but of course the inside matters more.
Have had these systems from the black G1 to the black/silver G3 with an i5 and IRL the later models are better looking. The black ones are rather drab.
July 2023 and I found this on Ebay for less than $150.
Just bought one for $85
when the Intel AX200 was new, there were tons of listings in the sub 15 dollar range. Then people caught on and demand increased the price a bit. You can still get them for this price if you look a bit.
You can still get them for about 15 bucks. Which is amazing imo.
@@SimmanGodz too bad the only decent wifi 6 APs and routers start way above a hundred bucks, now I have wifi 6 in my phone and laptop, but no place to use it
@@tommihommi1 I know right? It sucks. Though you can get used stuff cheaper. That's what I usually do for stuff I don't need but still want to have. My whole homelab is just used enterprise gear.
"We do not have the hard drive carrier for this." Hmm. . . Mine came with one, even though there was no drive. The carrier is oddly different and incompatible with the one in the EliteDesk 800 G2 Mini that I got before. It has a strange little door or gate that swings up, and it's slightly narrower, the vibration absorbent (with blue rubber bits) mounting screws don't fit. It seems to only have two screws to secure it in place (and mine was missing one of those), and those screws are also shorter than the ones in the 800. But, let's be fair, with the advances in NVMe drives, there's not much compelling reason to even have a SATA drive in most of these units today.
i have a 512gb nvme and a 500gb mechanical drive in the caddy with 16gb. now just trying to get that hdmi flex port to work to make this a media pc for the bedroom for movies, streaming and some retro games
Hey patrick, how about using pikvm project as a management for some system who didn't have intel me or amd dash? Is the pikvm project sufficient enough for those application?
Totally possible, but usually less expensive/ easier to just get a vPro enabled unit at the outset.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo if only intel vpro variant have decent quantity in my county 2nd hand market, well it's hard to get seller who knows what they sell. If i can't get the intel vpro variant i'm gonna try the pikvm route
Question for you. I have this same unit and mine didn't come with a HDD tray like yours but I have 2 m.2 ssd's and it works great. My question is i get a 901 Error when boot up at the bios level saying error no fan present. I just hit 'enter' and it boots to windows and all is good. Does your system do that as well?
(i guess the HDD tray has a fan in it (the power connector to the fan is near the usb c port.) Great video, i've watched most of them lol!
Never seen that happen sorry.
I want one of these with a ryzen 8 core 16 thread chip. dont care mobile or desktop. 2 or 3 nvme slots 3 display outs to replace a daily driver desktop. Love that PCs finally are following the mac mini approach.
Check out our Lenovo M75q-2 video for that.
Hello, i bought the HP Elitedesk 705 g4 mini 2400ge. The PC came with the drive cage for the 2.5 drive, but no screws to mount it to the motherboard. Does anybody know what size screws are used, sure would help out.
Thanks to all.
I've really been thinking to downsize my desktop to one of these mini pc's, does anyone know can some these fit two nvme drives?
Some of the Lenovo models have this feature I believe.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo thanks i'll have a look!
I think unless you're running RAID for them, a larger SSD would be a better fit for this use case scenario, there are 8TB SSD's on the market right now.
you could if you put one in a sata 2.5 case and have the caddy and cable
UK Used prices for these is all over the place, prices from £130, all the way up to just shy of £400.....all with very similar spec.
That is how pricing for these has been recently
I’ve seen these online, but never saw there size relative to anything else, man they are tiny!
I got one, they do run warm. Its so small I can put it on a napkin holder to secure it standing up 😂
It's like 170x170x30 mm, or the size of a 200 page book or thereabout.
mark
It will be interesting when they start making the Zen 2 Renoir versions! Those things are beasts!
Great overview. Have you tried contacting HP directly for parts? I've done it once before for an EliteBook and I had pretty good luck.
Can I connect this to two 4K monitors and hit 60Hz on both? (Just office stuff, spreadsheets, text editing, running business software, etc...)
I don't see any reason why it shouldn't, but I can't find any concrete evidence that says either way.
So long as the Display Ports are atleast version 1.2, it should support 4k 60hz on both.
Just bought two of them for $189 CDN. Think that’s about $150 US.
Do you think the motherboard would support amd ryzen 7 5700 on this? Mine is already running ryzen 5 3400g
Unlikely that it will. Usually these 1L PCs have 1 and sometimes 2 generations of microcode in their firmware. Skipping two generations ahead I would not bet on working.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo yeah it didn’t lol. I’m going to do a complete build with mini itx
Did you update Bios before upgrade?
How did you get it running? I get no video output after switching to 3400g and the system does not boot
i swapped the vga flex port for the hdmi, but it won't display video. am i doing something wrong? how do i enable the port?
I just ordered this unit and I was wondering where to buy the caddy and screws (part numbers) to install a SATA SSD drive. I
To see if the computer has the function I need, I have to enter the serial number on the HP website. Where do I get it if I'm potentially going to buy this computer? Are they crazy? They have so many different versions that they don't even know? Somehow Intel is able to do this...
I bought one of these recently, with the bios updates that have come out what cpu would be useable i saw somewhere ryzen 7?
If you have the mini, the bios only supports the 2400ge as the newest apu enabled chip.
What m.2 Wifi / Bluetooth internal adapter can be used in the HP Elitedesk 705 g4 or g5 Ryzen 2400ge or 2400g or 3400g. Is Wifi 6e possible ?
Could you provide a link to some adapters. Thanks
Hi STH, love your vids. I am wondering if thiis specific model have a bios update for Renoir APUs like the 4650G or 4600G series to be used in the same chasis?
The big vendors will likely launch their new Renoir models when the new Ryzen Pro chips are out. On these, usually BIOS support is focused on officially supported CPUs
this uses a B350 chipset, which isn't supported by AMD for Renoir. I can't find information on which exact AGESA version is used here, but it won't be one that works with Renoir.
so, I just checked, and they're still on the ancient RavenPI-FP5-AM4 1.1.0.B. They don't even support the 3200G or 3400G.
@@tommihommi1 That was my comment on they usually focus on BIOS for the processors they support. These are not meant to have CPUs upgraded.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo Would the 2400G/GE, 2200GE work?
How cool would it be if that supported the new APUs on the way!
HP and others will likely have new TMM class machines when the new Ryzen Pro APUs are out.
What's the remote management like on these AMD units?
AMD Dash is supported on these.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo Is AMD Dash enabled even when the machine is switched off? (like IPMI for example?) Thank you
Hello, is the cpu changeable?
I got one of those for
18W for this at idle is very high
@@ServeTheHomeVideo forgot to say that it’s under debian linux 12 so could be reason
Nice review, but that CPU is a 10 year old i7 spec for benchmarks
does it support a 2TB nvme drive? thanxxx
fun fact for the gamers, this thing can be equipped with a discrete gpu, an rx 560 4gb! I was lucky and got it with mine I got on ebay for 150$ :D
I'd just use the onboard iGPU. Vega 11 is still capable of impressive feats for a built-in.
i have the 3400g version and was thinking to upgrade to rx6400. would the 180watt psu be sufficient? do i need an adapter?
I want one but want a good one because my current computer isn't the best for my hobby modding phones
new lights? image looks better!
Can I upgrade the processor on this? currently i have one that has Ryzen 5 2400GE on it. I'm wondering if it is possible to upgrade it into a much more powerful chip
Generally it is easier and cheaper to buy a better chip/ unit and sell what you have. BIOS, cooling, and pricing all can be a pain
@@ServeTheHomeVideo that is true, but i have a constraint on my budget and so i am wondering if i could upgradd this bc my cousine said he'll be giving me his old ryzen 5 3400g cpu.
hp states that it support the 2400 non GE 65 watt version and the chipset is b350
@@ThaexakaMavro can I ask for your source or the link where you got the info if you still have it? thank you very much tho!
@@donutcat8462 There's no point in upgrading to the non GE version. It pretty much just draws more power. there are no other apu's that the bios currently supports. 2400ge is the best.
I know this is a couple years old but curious if anyone has tried ECC memory on these or if it's pretty thoroughly BIOS locked. The Ryzen Pro APU should at least support it and would be a big plus compared to the Intel ones.
What are these for?
Project TinyMiniMicro nodes were generally designed as very high volume and compact corporate desktops. They tend to come off lease or onto the secondary market at very low prices and with features such as Windows 10 Pro licenses. As a result, they are great for small edge server nodes (have some remote management on most), as small desktops, or as hybrid workstation/ server nodes.
Hi. What is the microphone that you use to record your videos?
Rode NTG4+
Which power adapter u use for this..please tell
this is sped up, right? Did anyone else notice? I usually set playback to 1.25x, had to double check if it was somehow left enabled by default this time
Not sped up at all.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo if that's just you talking, then it's really impressive :)
@@dnmr I am not sure why that is impressive? Maybe just the difference between me filming at noon rather than 10PM?
@@PatrickKennedy2 I'm pretty sure you were talking slower in earlier videos and it made them feel drawn out, this feels like a significant improvement. The content just flows better
Can you overclock the RAM or the CPU on this Units?
What CPU are compatible with it
How do you wipe these clean is it possible?
Can you upgrade de ryzen cpu?
No wifi on this mini pc? 😔
How do I wipe mine or reimage them?
shame HP lock the bios down to a few cpu models. imagine this thing ripping on a 5600G.
thanks 😃
Viable as an HTPC?
Very viable.
@@ServeTheHomeVideo thank you for the work you and your team do. I've been getting into the computing community again after several years and the videos and articles from sth have been extremely useful.
@@nerdgeekdc Welcome back!
anyone who tried to fit a non PRO Ryzen on this? It's the same AM4 socket, was wondering if it can fit the 3000 series Ryzen non PRO. Thanks!
Would these function without the PRO version of the Ryzen APUs?
This has the AMD B350 chipset so I would think so, The AMD B350 is a pro if I am not mistaken. A very wide supported CPU list from that AM4, Typical of AMD to build it this way, Intel gets isolation vibes.
Can I get 4gb of VRAM if I install 16gb memory on it?
The BIOS setting for video RAM is 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and Auto. When set to Auto, I get 1GB of video RAM. I think you need to add the discrete GPU to get more.
best PC for gaming... 170lv (~85 euro) for Ryzen 5 2400G, 8GB ram, 256GM m2 SSD -> top.
Is this available in india? Was very disappointed when I saw that India's hp site doesn't even show the elitedesk series
The Wi-Fi thing is a a deal breaker for me.
the audio is very informative but the video not quite, i know you have a review page with details, and you kinda motivate ppl to take a look, but i just want to see the charts while i watch the videos and not open a new page, please consider changing the video format to something more ... different, like show less face and more charts and hardware, it looks a briefing, but you can make your video smaller in the corner and show the things in full-size. really appreciate the quality of data :) but the presentation can be made better. have a nice day. all the best
Without at least 2 Intel/Broadcom NICs it's a waste :/
