  • In this video we take a look at an awesome affordable AMD Ryzen Powered Mini PC. This is an HP Elitedesk 705 G4 that I recently picked up from eBay. It’s powered by the Ryzen 5 2400GE and backed by 16 GB of ram and it makes for a great little emulation, lite Gaming, and Media PC! We test out some 4K video playback, PC gaming and see how it handles some of our favorite emulators like PPSSPP for PSP, GameCube and Wii using the Dolphin Emulator, and even PS2 emulation using PCSX2 plus we do a quick Batocera test to see if it can run a stand-alone emulation front end!

I had one of these that included WiFi and Bluetooth. I travel for my job and I used it to play War Thunder in hotel rooms. It even worked for BF1 and BF4. I just attached it to whatever TV was in the room and used a wireless keyboard and mouse. I also added an extra 500GB HDD for movies and music. I loved that little machine. It was easily transportable and I made sure to keep it in my carry-on luggage, as TSA wasn't sure what it was and went through my checked luggage whenever I packed it in my suitcase.

Hey, thanks for taking my suggestion (if you saw it). I have this unit and am really impressed with it given the price. A couple things I noticed: the GPU can't maintain the 1240MHZ 'boost' clock and settles around 800 MHZ from what I've seen, at least in FurMark. The CPU seems to be fine-- I can get a consistent 3.45 GHZ in Prime95. Also, the CPU TDP doesn't measure the full power draw of the chip, it's limited to 35W in 'APU STAPM' from what I can tell. One other thing is that I am limited to 4K30 on this device, it uses an older DisplayPort version. The temperatures are fine though, and I've only been playing FF6 Pixel remaster on it which is not at all demanding. Hope that all makes sense as I'm a little out of my depth here.

I tested out the G5 (with a 3200GE) last year but I managed to break it before I finished my testing! I later tried the Lenovo M75Q with the 3400GE, which I found performed pretty much the same but was very definitely power limited. Switching the Lenovo to a higher wattage (135w, I think) PSU gave far more performance from the APU. I always meant to return to the 705 G5 and see if it could be improved with a better PSU, but never got round to it.

The 705 g5, as well as the g4 have a proprietary connector. On some further digging, I found out that HP sold some models as gaming PCs, and the port was for an rx560. Got one on eBay with the 2400G (not ge) for $140 with the wifi cars, 256gb NVME, PSU and W10p installed. One upgrade that comes with the 2400G is a copper CPU cooler vs aluminum, and a vented top panel vs sealed. Found one of the RX560 4g add on cards as well for $100 (not the best price for a rx560 but is for this proprietary card. This also REQUIRES the vented panel as the heat sink sumps out the top vent and is ducted), got lucky that mine came with the 150watt psu already so I didn't have to spend $50 on that. Makes a great little travel system for hotel/airbnb gaming, also used to the wife to play her puzzle/adventure games on without booting up our larger system.

This a fabulous PC (for the money). They have dumped hundreds of these on eBay. One seller has sold over 650 of these (so far). But some of these resellers have been stripping some of the internals. Most notably the 2.5 inch storage bay, or the internal Wi-Fi card, and some have removed one of the (2) 8 Gig memory sticks and then selling those separately on eBay.
But mine came in perfect shape, not a scratch or dent on it.. It came with everything and the back option slot even had the HDMI connector and the 65 watt power supply (although it say 90 watt max and HP does sell a 90 watt PS as well). All of this cost me $135 (and $8 sales tax). Oh, and mine was the 2400G not the slightly slower GE version. As well as a Windows 10 Pro OS already installed and registered. This is a great deal. So many dealers are selling these so choose carefully so you get the full package (if you still can). I've ordered a 2 TB Samsung 970 NVME M2 drive to swap in. I ordered it from Best Buy (refurbed) for about $70. No need to get a 980 as this PC is PCI3 and not 4. This is the best deal I have ever received from an online reseller.

*@ETAPRIME* The 1L TINY Lenovo ThinkCentre models m720q, m920q, m90q, p320, p330 & I believe also the m920x each all have an actual PCIe Express Slot (I believe x8). & there's x16 to x8 adapters/ connector cards (90° angle) made for this mod to add a single slot discrete GPU into the original housing. Some people have done it and drilled or cut holes in the top over the CPU & GPU fans for better airflow. Some have even 3D printed a new top cover/ lid for this upgrade. It'd be nice if you could do a video on it showing newer games running on it. I've seen a couple people do it with A2000 single slot mods. & it'd also be cool to see someone do it with a RX 6400 using Chimera OS. Which that I haven't seen yet (you'd be the 1st).
Could be a budget friendly alternative to something like the MS-01. For a fraction of the price used.
Also it seems everyone that's done the GPU upgrade on a 1L mini/ tiny are using the i5 8500t variants of those ThinkCentre models mentioned above.

How soon will you be getting the steam deck? Looking forward to a full emulation breakdown for that machine. A tutorial on how to get emulation up and running on the steam deck would be great. I would watch a 30-60min detailed tutorial.

I saw this on Walmart for 248CAD (Canadian Dollards) and it is a great deal especially compared to the intel i 6th-8th cpu and worse igpus for the same price.
But I have an i7-4770 with GTX1050ti and ssd that I bought 5 years ago at 750CAD and it slightly better overall performance wise, despite the much bigger pc case.
So, I'll probably go with the Ryzen 5 5600g pc that I can find at 500CAD and add a dGPU later on, that could match the Playstation 5 GPU at least.
Anyways, this is a great mini pc, if I haven't got my i7-4770 pc.

If you are waiting to get the G version of the 3000, 4000, and 5000 series and hoping to get better gaming performance especially with Emulation, I'd suggest get this now at 100+ most of it having 8GB RaM already installed. There is not a lot to gain if you are thinking of using a system like this for light dx11 gaming and emulation, as most of those use case use the GPU of this CPU, and the G versions of 3000, 4000, 5000 Ryzen series all have the same GPU. This use case don't use much of the CPU.

My Ryzen 5 2400G played games at 1080p at low to medium high settings depending on the game. It worked quite well as a stop gap solution before picking up a Radeon RX 570 for $120 brand new at Micro Center (2019) and I was always wondering why AMD did away with Vega 11 and stuck with Vega 8 when improving single core IPC. The processor came with Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5 and I was able to play both games without issue especially when I had 16GB of 3200 RAM. I still have the CPU as a backup (the same for my Ryzen 5 2600 and Radeon RX 570) since I built my parents a PC utilizing a massively discounted Ryzen 7 5700G.
