NEW NUCs Fanless to Gaming
We test three new NUCs, the ASUS NUC 13 Rugged Short, the ASUS ROG NUC, and the ASUS NUC 14 Pro as a first set after ASUS acquired Intel's NUC business in 2023. One of these surprised me.
Thank you to the sponsors of this video: STH CZcams Members for getting components to install and upgrade these. Also, ASUS for sending the units since it is a bit tough for us to support buying three units for one video. Of course, nobody gets to review these videos outside of our team before they are published as we do everything editorially independently. We also have affiliate links as part of various affiliate programs.

    One thing I woould be interested in trying is using the Nuc with the GPU to have a cloud game streaming server. That way I could have a relatively quiet computer sititng in my network stack that I can stream games to using parsec or steam link to a handheld device like the retroid pocket or logitech cloud handheld etc. Or even stream it to a low power ultrabook so I can play some more intense games on a lower power computer.

    One feature that Patrick didn’t bring up: the tall variant of the classic NUC has an optional second 2.5G NIC. It’s an add-in module that sits in the 2242 M.2 slot, with a connector that sits under the rear IO. Intel even took care to optimize NIC naming, on Linux with systemd.net-naming-scheme(7), the two NICs show up as enp100s0 and enp101s0 respectively.

    Congrats! Two pieves of advice: First treat nightime baby duty like shift work. One parent is on from bedtime until midnight (or the halfway point for your collective sleep schedule) and the other is on from midnight (or halfway point) to morning. This allows both parents to get 5-6 hours of uninterrupted sleep. THIS WILL BE A GAME CHANGER. Trust me on this. Second advice; do what works for you. You don't need to listen to any advice and should do what works for your family.

    NUCs don't need Windows 11 Pro. They need linux. ;) As for parenting advice: you can save a ton on baby toys with a regulation football - they won't be able to chew it apart, and it can roll/bounce a million different ways to keep the kid entertained and confused much longer than any spherical ball, once their old enough to start moving around/interacting with the world. If you're super concerned about the firmer "pigskin" style, Nerf footballs also work, at least until teething era. Apart from that, don't spend money on new anything until they're talking. You'll save a ton of money, reduce landfill waste, and no one will remember or care. Also, when asking others for gifts/help/etc, focus on stuff that would make you as PARENTS feel relief. Again, the kid won't remember the extra trip through the park or fancy stroller, but every meal you don't need to make yourself, or room that someone else cleans while you're taking a nap is going to give you back energy to try to keep from drowning at work, and to actually do all the fun bits of parenting.

    Baby tip: You've got 3 month now to arrange everything, create as much free time as you can in your life, calm everything down, surround your self (specially your wife since she will take the biggest hit) with support group and get used to sleeping with crying baby - in three months teething starts and this is where real stress begins :) And remember, for you as a father - having children is all about the logistics !

    • @ServeTheHomeVideo

    • @tommybronze3451
      @tommybronze3451 Před 22 hodinami

      @@ServeTheHomeVideo Nope. with 3 behind the belt I can tell you that at 3 month (6 for some) mark the true hell starts - they live in constant pain so they cry for no reason. Get your self couple of brands of teething gels / powders and as quickly as possible figure out which one works the best, which one works the second best. Rotate what you've got, but keep the best for the super bad days. Also from medical stand point men and women have slightly different brain structure, hence women can survive for a year while having sleep so messed up that longest stretch of sleep is 40 minutes - you can't. Saying that everything will land on your shoulders. If there are any misunderstandings now, sort those out NOW before those will turn into major arguments (lack of sleep WILL do that to you and her). Things usually calm down at 9 month time and at 18 month you get quad whammy when the large back teeth come out. This period is rather short but our middle one nearly chocked to un-aliving them self while crying.

    Regarding the Qnap LAN+NVME card: could you try with their 2xNVME-only (not LAN) card? My experience with that card is that the LAN chip won't power on with a 160W Pico PSU+120W power brick, but it would boot with a 180W PSU from the Inwin Chopin. Same system, only PSU was different. Also another PCIe 1-lane 2.5GB Lan card would not boot with a pico PSU. I mean, it's strange that that card won't boot when 50W GPUs work.

    Dang, that N50 based unit is almost my dream firewall. I have an N100 unit with a fan that struggles a bit with my home internet it has a single internal M.2 and a bootable micro SD. if that N50 unit came with the larger heatsink and say, an N200 or N300 it would be all i would need up to 3 bootable deivces internally s a great plus because i might be able to get away with a 120GB optane drive for web caching. Also, thank you Intel for starting to rename Alderlake-N to Atom, i was REALLY upset with the atom based i3-N305. Its performance is great, the name is very misleading, when looking at everything but the CPU cores and GPU, it has worse features/specs than first gen core i3(ignoring the version differences), fewer channels of RAM, fewer PCIe lanes.

    I like ASUS and I have some of their hardware. But maore than $2K for a NUC is insane. Saying that I could build a machine for less than this really doesn't mean much when I know that people like Dell build full fledged workstations every day for much less than what ASUS is charging.

    I'd love to see them do a fanless n100 release: Perfect workshop/garage PC.

      Asus does have a N100 fanless. ASUS ExpertCenter PN42 Little pricey compared to other small N100 units, especially as no storage or ram is included, but it has Wifi 6E which was really nice for my setup. I'm running mine with a 32GB DDR4 stick.

    Here is something to add to your evaluations that won't cost a thing. I've been noticing some heat dissipation issues with some of these smaller machines. Stuff like processors going into heat saturation and then cranking back. I personally use HWMonitor to view this but there are other utilities that will get to the same information. The bottom line is that some of the engineering is a bit lacking and the performance is less than expected.

    Wi-Fi module is not upgradeable on the NUC 14 Pro anymore! Pretty disappointing, as these NUCs tend to last a long time and it would have been nice to be able to swap to Wi-Fi 7 or 8 when available.

    I wish they would design the higher-end NUCs to handle dust. My mums Intel NUC the heatsink got completely clogged and you have to dismantle the entire unit to get to the heatsink, making it impractical to clean regularly. I've bought the Akasa passive case for it, but not installed yet, I'm not convinced of its reliability as it relies on the motherboard screws to hold the CPU on the heat spreader, rather than the screws near the SoC. I can see it flexing over time making bad contact. According to Intel though the newer e-cores should be interesting, as they are claiming 38-68% IPC gains.
