- The shattering of Land Speed Record (LSR) by the North American Eagle will be the most watched sporting event of 2007. This international event, scheduled for October 15th, 2007, will raise excitement and inspire people all over the world. The spectacle of seeing a dedicated team of Canadian and American aerospace engineers and race car enthusiasts, who are volunteering without pay, reach uncharted heights and transcend new goals will give a lift and re-ignite the spirit of anyone following the event. And the goal? Traveling over 800 MPH on land and breaking the current Land Speed Record of 763 MPH that has been set for ten years.

I guess we all know how this turned out.
You ever watch the films on this? She's not really wearing any safety gear. She's got an Air Force helmet and what looks like a pretty minimal driving suit with no Halo system.
What an honor to get a hold of Yeager's f-104! It makes me want to watch "The Right Stuff" again.
Good luck to them , it may look wacky to some people but you don't know if it will work unless you try . Its better to try and fail then never try at all .
I know...I LOVE the underdog element of these guys, but if you wanna go 800 mph on the ground...you gotta build something from the ground up, that is SPECIFICALLY designed for the job at hand. The Eagle is neat "Novelty", and 25 years from now will be a unique collectors item & museum piece, but I'm worried somebody's going to get killed if they take this thing 500 mph.
I liked that statement "to everybody's horror, it was a brit that broke the LSR" Why I ask would that horrify anybody?
Gorgeous. Much respect to ya'll. I only worry the vehicle will not be stable. By which I mean.. Stay on the ground. My fear is; without more downforce it'll be light on the wheels, which will be light on steering. Will the original vert be enough? Maybe one small (2 square feet, 3 degree) canards up front on the nose cone and a 4 ft long, 16 inch set out back (teardrop shaped)to deal with the pressure that'll be created by the pressure wave from the nose. Good Luck and I'll be watching.
You mean to tell me that the boneyards in either Tucson or Mojave didn't have one there?? Amazing!!!!
I know!! "Horror"?!?!
I'm American, and I found that POMPOUS & ARROGANT as hell!!!
You're absolutely right, I forgot about the F-104's down-firing ejector seat! Let me change that to "I hope they haven't kept the ejector seat!" It's going to take a brave (or reckless) man to pilot this vehicle.
I hope the effect of reflection of the supersonic shockwave from the ground, back onto the fuselage and the jet intakes has been considered in detail. This would be in addition to the effect of the shockwave pulverising the surface of the ground ahead of the wheels, that I think endangered Thrust SSC unexpectedly.
@covingtonium They are using solid aluminium wheels, it was shown in a documentary about em.
Ever heard of The American Way, Vanishing Point, The Minnesota LSR Project, the City of Sterling, The Proud American?
All LSR projects that hung around too long and died. Much as I wish Mr Shadle and his crew the best of luck, I can't see them ever doing this.
I hope they do get the record, to give Bloodhound something to shoot at, but I suspect the project will just fizzle out.
If they succeed, a brilliantly engineered and heavily funded project will have been out done by what amounts to a garage effort.
Jon Higley is my science teacher!
Whoo!
Thrust SSC: 50,000lbf, 10 tonnes
North American Eagle: 18,000 lbf, 6 tonnes
Thrust SSC: bespoke design, years of wind tunnel and rocket sled testing
North American Eagle: old plane with wings taken off and wheels added
Thrust SSC: Driven by RAF fast-jet pilot
North American Eagle: Driven by geriatric IT exec
10/10 for optimism, and good luck to them. But, I seriously don't think they'll even crack 650mph. I hope they prove me wrong!
Why isn't this plane in a museum? This is Chuck Yeagar's plane!
When I see "North American", I think P-51, F-86, F-100, F-107. When I see an F-104, I see Kelly Johnson.
Shouldn't it be the "Lockheed Eagle"???
rachelshadle: - and what are you? Being English, I was very proud of Thrust SSC. It was a properly conceived project with a custom built vehicle designed for one thing only - and with big industrial backing. The current project looks compromised from the start, using a modified 50-year old F-104. Prove me wrong........ please!
Unfortunately the ejector seat fired downwards, a feature that contributed to the aircraft's "widowmaker" reputation.
Who are you, SterlingCL? What made you want to upload this specific video to CZcams to share it with the whole world to see?
Keep this to yourself, but I am working on a new landspeed record vehicle. It's going to use a Spaceshuttle solid fuel rocket booster as propellant (3.3 million lb.thrust). Biggest problem is changing over booster between runs in allotted time. If things get too hot, an EJECTOR SEAT will be essential. Now get back under your stone.
That's what I call the RIGHT STUFF!!!
The NAE project does not have a convincing concept.
The most dangerous forces at those speeds are the dynamic pressure in front of the wheels and fuselage that generate lifting forces, similar like the aqua-planing effect.
The NAE concept does not really take care about that. So I have some doubts that they will achieve the desired speed...
Erm yes i have seen a Strategic Reconnaissance-71, its got 2 of those lovely big jet engines on it invented by Frank Whittle.
Also if its so great how come over a third of them where lost without any enemy interceptions??
lol
it looks like a starfighter with the wings clipped off
Oh dear, someone's going to come a cropper! This looks like a college project.
An f-104 Starfighter is a good choice! They are already so sleak!
I hope they make it, even being a european. The record has stood still for too long. But then again these guys have been idling for too long now. They need to get going and go for it, before the bigass money teams come sailing in. There are 2+ of those multi mil teams aiming for 2011 so I recon these guys need to make 800 this year or early 2011, since theyll almost certainly be clipped by the others when they are ready.
Well they might as well pack up now as Richard Noble has launched Bloudhound SSC a 1000mph car to ensure the UK keeps the record.
...I'm going need you to go ahead and post the other half of this...mm k
Good in theory.
if these guys "really" want to break the record, they might have to do more than just what they have. Which is, use 2 or 3 instead of just 1 jet engine. Its possible to challenge the thrustSSC record but they would have to get a lot of sponsorship for this.
Well that was ten wasted years now Bloodhound SSC is on the scene.
Looks like someones missing the wheels on their double wide.
This car is designed to go 808mph, so even if they do get the record it will be smashed by the Bloodhound SSC which is designed to go 1000mph!
and another thing, who is going to drive it, an American or a Canadian?
my Father has This Staefighter F - 104 Flaying in Arrizona America
Its not a car.
at first i was thinkin NO WAY there neva gunna do it and im hopeing they dont lol (as im english an we have the record) but after watching it all im lookin forward 2 it lol and kinda hopeing they do go 800mph
um if i go down 4 houses from mine to girl tana's house the hanger for this car is right behind her house i figured this out like 2 weeks ago because i ride bmx with 2 kids and they always say were working on the eagle on saturday i asked them 2 weeks ago what the eagle was they said the rocket car i looked into it and was like holy shit i'v lived here for 8 years and never knew that this was being built right behind my house
I once asked these guys what had been done to counter trans-sonic ground effect and was pointed to a couple of crude drawings of a fin under the nose...
The stress points in the airframe are correctly placed for flight and NOT running on hard ground... The steering system is vague and the vehicle is directionally unstable... Ed is simply too old to have the reaction time to pilot it as serious speed...
Sorry guys, but the only thing this would do through the measured mile is lay FOD.
what better plane to use than a starfighter?
43000 hp ?!
Mmmmmm a decade to put an axle on an aeroplane fuselage, and a bigger jet engine inside. Need I say more
Funny that a British man broke the land speed record on American Soil...
next year... uk's bloodhound will reach 1000mph!
@Surfer22z I'm sorry but they should put this thing in the crusher or a museum before someone gets hurt. The only way the yanks are going to get the record back is to put some serious money behind a fresh project and build a machine from the ground up.
i am building a similar project, ive got my little brother's gogo push car and replaced the wheels with solid metal ones and bolted on a small but powerful pulse detonation engine, i think my LSR car has more hope than this waste of a F-104
wheres part 5?
they need to understand what made thrust ssc work so well aerodynamically; this nae looks like a go cart
team america...fuck yeah !
Shame the video couldn't name the ACTUAL LSR record holder.
Wg Cdr Andy Green drove Thrust SSC over Mach 1,
NAE hasn't a hope of beating the LSR. The areo's of the F104 were never designed to do 700+ at ground level. I would not be surprized that it would be flying long before that speed.
I hate to say it guys but the only thing this machine is gonna break is the poor sucker inside..Going supersonic is not like building a soapbox racer which this car is like compared to Thrust and Bloodhound.
Personally i think these guys have had their day. Yes they have achieved a fair amount and they haven't broken the record but it's too old a project. I admire them for trying but their time is up. And what are they saying about Richard Noble having millions to spend???? Where on earth did this figure come from. They would not believe how difficult it was to raise that money and it wasn't even millions?! I mean at least get their facts right.
@gamblemadman don't worry, if you intended to deal me a low blow by your comment, take some comfort in knowing that my ancestors as a matter of fact took quite many germans with them, add that to the primitive means which they only had available at the time it should even inspire you to be a little humbled. other than that i can assure you that i am an enthusiastic anti-german and anti monarchy european, that happens to enjoy british people arrogantly trying to look down on americans
*lbf = pounds of force (I was comparing the thrust and the weight of the two... it's late!!!)
how fast did they go, were they close to our british record in the thrust ssc???
i sure hope that hey aren't using rubber tires. they will disintegrate.
dude! thats amazing. any chance you can put the rest of it up!? totally enthralled
So i'm guessing that Thrust SSC is still the world record holder. Sorry but that thing is not likely to beat it, it struggles to go in a straight line at slow speed.
"we dont plan on getting me killed"
lol thats ur problem u dont plan
it never worked... *sigh*
That's right... we don't know shit. We are only the engine sponsor. We built it. We build jet engines. Check out S&S Turbines. You'll see our engine tests of various GE and Rolls-Royce turbojets.
We're too dumb to be trusted with the important stuff. We just stick to the little, simple shit... like the engines.
Ha!
This project's got "haven't thought ahead" written all over it.
Just the way they've got the chassis supported...
If they knew what they were doing they would have used landing gear or wing support points, somehow to put the weight on the road.
Plus - this would NOT have been a supersonic airplane at ground level. (Or just Barely)
has nothing on thrust ssc
I would have left as a plane and posted some mach numbers for shits and giggles
@D4mo84 gosh , let`s just wait and see wait happens , for now they are well on their way of doing what they said they were going to do. if anything is a fail, then it is your monarchy!
1000mph+ just think about it how fast that thing could actually travel across your tiny island that still calls itself"empire"i certainly wouldn't mind having this kind of transportation next time that i have to go to the UK,because it´s always been "the faster i can get out of the Uk again the better"
Actually the best fighter in the world is the F-22, just to clairify.
43000 hp is all i need to reach mach 1?? well..... strap a rocket to me and away i go....
i put 25$ that it wont beat the thrust ssc :)
so when are they gonna go for the record?
Wow do you really think that these people are that stupid to keep a seat that ejects??????
@Surfer22z Yeah i suppose we do lol. Love from England :-)
@Surfer22z Hey man technically this is a Canadian/ US project.
"They must build the most technologically advanced car on the planet." and yet, they are using a junked airplane as a base and a minimal budget. I wish these guys luck, but it seems like the way this is dragging on it will never happen. Technologically advances makes me think Ferrari F-1 team, not a bunch of volunteers using scrap to make a supersonic car. Again I wish them luck and it would be cool to see, but I don't think this one will do it.
north americans are the true kings of land speed racing it"s just a matter of time before they break the 1000 mph barrier i just hope craig breedlove will be somehow involved in it he deserves to be there when it happens
I agree, it is good to see average joes trying. What I'm pointing out is that they don't often succeed in the modern world.
Look, I wish these guys the best and will cheer if they do it, I just don't see how you can build the most advanced race car in the world by starting from literally a piece of junk. F-1 cars are designed from the ground up using near unlimited budgets and the highest technology and these guys think they can hit 800 mph? Better to try and fail unless someone dies trying!
@b4igetu
that true?
chus me bluh,,,
@gamblemadman as far as disliking germany and living here is concerned, well, it is just a preliminary thing out of sheer necessity at the moment for me. it`s a means to an end, anyways, if you like germans and polish, come here anytime and enjoy yourself. but by that of course i don't mean any rioting like it seems to be trendy in the kingdom these days. best greetings
@b4igetu
that true?
wow cool idea!
i hope they do it, 800 mph is freakin fast
@gamblemadman i get your point, and i agree that there is a vast difference sure, but still, in our western spheres we should generally get past of having people living in palaces and enjoying all kinds of priviliges just by being born into the right family. the parliament members(in a const.monarchy)already costs enough of working peoples` money, what they(all politicians in general)are actually good for always remains debatable, but at least they are required to"work" for the money they receive.
On gaining the record in 1997 the team was still in debt. These guys don't show any of the professionalism of the British team, maybe they are learning now, but shade-tree mechanics are not what you want building a supersonic car.
So much rhetoric! So little accuracy. Do you really think this is the pinnacle of jet engine technology? It's just a crummy J79, the best of them made under 19,000 lbs thrust from a 3,900 lb engine, the EJ200 is a little engine and makes 20,000 lbs thrust from a 2180 lb engine. The P&W F119 engine in the F22 weighs the same as a J79 but produces 35,000 lbs thrust. I hope they aren't so far wrong on all their other ideas.
@gamblemadman well, you truly seem to have a very twisted concept of politicians, but you are right in saying that the queen basically doesn't care, as long as she can have her palaces and her servants, and all of that while not EVEN pretending to be doing anything actually meaningful. if you truly want to protect that, rather than the slim chance of electing someone who might still have ideals and is a decent man who very well wants to make a difference, you seem beyond repair in that regard.
I'm wondering whether any of these guys knew that the gods were conspiring? With 20 being probable now for the LSR, AI5 also pushing for 20, are NEAGLE fishing for 20 also? Because if that's the case then that's incredible!
Interesting... But I have my doubts: funding is crucial in this kind of stuff, and trying to go over 763 mph in a car built in your backyard is risky business.
Oh, and does anyone else think the commentary is really really annoying?
Ed who?? This old fart's gonna eat it. Now he want's to go 1000mph with the same recycled F-104 after Noble took the supersonic record.
@b4igetu It's not a rocket, it's a jet engine. LMAO.
Love the way they make Richard Noble out to be some rich corporate bad guy. How come they didn't mention that he broke the record in 1983 with Thrust 2 when he had barely any money? He was a wall-paper salesman before that..
Sure Thrust SSC had funding from Richard Noble, but the vast majority had to be found elsewhere, while the small team worked away at it in a college.. the guy isn't made of money. This NA Eagle Project is a failure.
This is what irritates me: "The shattering of Land Speed Record (LSR) by the North American Eagle will be the most watched sporting event of 2007. This international event, scheduled for October 15th, 2007, will raise excitement and inspire people all over the world."
Really? Is that so? What a stupid boast. They've got 6 days left from NOW.
Now this is so sad. How can anyone do this to a plane!? Why would anyone want to turn a plane in a car - how gay is that. The F-104 is beautiful, but this just makes me cry.
This is a load of Crap, Noble didnt go supersonic, he was project director of Thrust SSC, Andy Green drove the car, plus the money to finance SSC came from sponsers like Castrol who were attracted because it was a serious design, this will never break the sound barrier they havent even looked at the areodynamics I dont think they have any kind of active suspension and the shock waves at supersonic speeds go into a cone which will bounce off the ground and flip the car
Hats off to them for trying, but and this is a big but.
This video sucks on many levels, firstly putting Noble down for his efforts - bad sportsmanship, he broke the record twice - period!
Also who cares if the plane is no 763, starfighters are all the same, will it make any difference - no!
Lastly i hate the way these american videos always try and big everything up and make it look like USA are doing everything bigger and better!
The bloodhound will destroy this......
Rant over.
Yes. The commentary is "Extreme", "In your face", & "Righteous"; masquerading as patriotic. And the 90's grunge soundtrack, & sped-up film sequences are just cheesy & pompous.
Lets see you try to do this. You talk so big so you must know it all. Why dont you build one and beat the world speed record. Oh ya that wont happen. :)
Horrid, gimmicky, hyped-up video. Aren't they being a bit presumptuous about beating the existing record. I bet they don't get anywhere near it. Just hope they have kept the ejector seat!
Typical Americans.. cannot even get the facts right!!!!.... Richard Nobel took the land speed record from the Americans but DIDN'T go supersonic. Andy Green went 763mph (supersonic)in Thrust SSC. Richard Nobel was the project manager/ supervisor.
HAHA! Just another childish statement.
