It's great to have this kind of video because when I started doing goth music. Because of my skin color I was afraid of the reaction of the public or the scene. But in the end I was very welcomed by everyone and it shows how positive this community is.

It’s awesome that you always give poc/underrepresentated groups a voice on your platform. Great interview!

It's too bad that people can't get as excited about the newer bands as they are with legacy bands like Bauhaus. I will support newer bands over a legacy band making a cash grab. I was a teen in the 80's and my first ever concert was OMD, and synthpop/new wave helped lead me into goth music.

“someone named Dr. Martin Luther King that people love to misquote” I love Jess for always saying it like it is 🖤🖤🖤 So true too about not needing an offline group of people to be goth and that everyone’s experience is totally different within each scene. I wish you (Jess) could have come party with us in El Paso back in the day, that’s one hell of a drive, but in the hypothetical time machine that would have been awesome 🖤🖤🖤 And hey we never know, there’s still the future😍🤩💖💖💖🖤🖤🖤 I just need to get my shit together 😵‍💫and the world needs to be safer Rona wise 💔and then of course most importantly if you are feeling well and feel up for it in the hypothetical / real future that would be amazing! 💖💖💖

    And...
Be happy you have a goth scene. Here in my part of the country is more or less dead since just before 2010.
Don't hardly see alternative people in the streets either.
I always be happy when I see elder punks or other elders (of course also youngsters) in the streets. Gives me a big smile the hole day.
And I am happy the few times we have music concerts or festivals. This year I will have the chance to visit Subkultfestivalen (they are alternative) in July and I will also see the Cure in October.

If I didn't have my online community I should feel very alone as a goth. Specially elder in Sweden.
I just wish I could meet all one day. No matter where in the World and no matter who you are.
I don't have Facebook and will never have.
Thanks for the thoughts and conversation from you both.

This is so great! Awesome discussion about genre in general and totally agree it’s most important to enjoy the music you genuinely enjoy and support the music you enjoy. That’s why I still buy albums on iTunes tbh or try to stream music directly from the bands official CZcams or Spotify if they have one, and now this year finally going to shows again and I can’t wait! 🖤🖤🖤

I agree! What’s happening right now is exciting, I feel like there’s so much more to talk about what is going on now than what was and it’s just beginning! I feel 2022/23 are going to be awesome music and scene wise because people are ready💖💖💖🖤🖤🖤

Also, funny Jess brought up that the same 5 bands are regurgitated because on the goth Reddit thread they just made a rule to limit talking about those bands to only Thursdays and people were so pissed 🤣. I think it’s a good rule for that very reason.

Plus Sunshine Blind did one of the best Flock of Seagull covers ever. So it must be goth ;)

I think it's hard compare everything cause most people either see it from an American way or from English way. Not all are from those parts.
And to have "five safe cards" for beginners I don't feel bad about having. Cause it's easiest way to get other than goths to understand.
When I grew up New Order and band like that were "mainstream". But also I loved New Order for an example.
I can understand that some get bored, but I also know what my dj friends said in 2000. Some countries and specially small towns have/had hard get enough people if they didn't put on "those boring songs". The few successful were when they had mixed evenings with other type of music. Then they could blend in more different material.
I didn't even know the therm goth in the 80s. It came for me closer to end of 90s with internet. But I still loved the music back then.
We (in Sweden) actually called people that loved synth/synthpop only for synthare.
I have never lost intrest discover music, but my health issues also affect how much energy I can put on it. Spotify, CZcams and friends are my sources.
Myself think it's little sad that most of times the only visiual goth is tradgoth. Cause like you mentioned it's lots of different genres even inside goth or bands that explore.
Sweden had a gothrock band that loved doing that and even used saxophone in their music.
I think Jess could love visit Lord Fer's goth club in Mexico. He play lots of different types.
And I am also a person that pick music after mood, specially when it comes to other type of music than goth.
When I was younger in the 80s all not mainstream kids were hanging together and of course I also listen to their music and loved it. But if I must pick only one there will be goth.
And Sisters of Mercy will always be my no 1.

Oh snap, was the makeup brand wet n wild? Oh yeah! Kelly just said it haha. I remember that, I wasn’t mad about it personally but I completely understand why it would be upsetting/ annoying.
