One big update for everyone, the Quansheng UV-K5 is now NATIVELY supported in CHRIP-NEXT! No Developer mode / python script download work needed.
Yeah, but not all features that are in the original software is not available in chirp, like setting a password.
CHRIP-NEXT runs in windows 10 64 bit. No good for me. my CPS's are on a Win 7 32 bit laptop. Because most of the early 2000's CPS for LMR like HYT 700 and Kirisun's etc
i have, all use 32 bit windows.
I'm thinking of setting up a laptop with linux i can use Chirp next on
@daytona1212 this is true, but those settings will remain set even if programmed with chirp, so for quick additions and removals of memories will be helpful
@@w1btr Yes, I agree.
you can check the values.
Baofeng 5R sensitivity.
145 MHz 20 dB quieting was measured at -125 dBm (0.13 μV), while 432 MHz this valueamounts -131 dBm (0.06 μV). 432 MHz

antennas can play a huge factor for percieved reception, just as span can and how wide a reception an HT is optimised for... K5 is weirdly diverse in its frequency and you can even mod it for 18Mhz to 1.3Ghz thats a weird fish..
Please turn off the background music. I'm trying to listen to what you are saying plus what the radio says, (on those occasions when it talks) and yet there is a thumping beat background music fighting against both of you. Great video, but PLEASE, I want to hear YOUR VOICE telling me information, and whatever voice prompts are coming from the radio. If I wanted to listen to music, I'd go elsewhere. (Well maybe still on CZcams, but a musicvideo, not a tutorial show-and-tell about a new Amateur Transceiver). Thanks

Lucas. Nice to see some new content popping up. This is a great review video for an interesting radio with all it's features. I'm looking forward to more content in the future. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Kevin!
Nice review. The music is unnecessary and for us non English speakers ads a bit of difficult in understanding. Thank you!
It'd be a nice video if I could hear you over the booming background music!
Why ruin an interesting review with mindless irritating "music. Switched off.
Because it increases the watch rate by about 25%. I don't even disagree with you, but I'm afraid you're the minority.
It's critical for the under 30's unfortunately. Their inability to pay attention without constant audio & video stimulation is ruining CZcams ☹️
That said, I don't think this is their age range subject matter.
There are also plenty of less intrusive music choices without a metronome beat !! 😠
Music isn’t just annoying it is obscuring the narration. I’m out.
I have a few of these, great value. My biggest issue is airband.
My first one had keypad issues so i had to open it up and align the silicone pad properly and all good.
Airband will never work. No internal AM receiver. Learn the other features, first. There's a heck of a learning curve to cross.
I also noticed that the frequecy san can be a little bit of frequency like you showed us, but when I connect the cable and read from the radio it's correct to the right frequency in the software. And the speaker is a problem, it's not a normal speaker. It's very flat. And I just watched a video of a guy changing the speaker, and the sound quality was way better after that upgrade.
I have updatet mine to a hacked firmware with USB (DSB) and frequency is spot on. So within 20Hz or so on 50MHz.
That is different than what I have experienced. I set up a 30 channel scan group for Sonoma California and the k-5 skips a lot of static that the uv-5r gets stuck on.
You just confirmed my own observations - Bao UV5R has a substantially better receiver: more sensitive and selective one. I was suprised by the fact that with Bao I can easily open repeater some 60+ km away from me and easily recive it from inside of my house, but Quanscheng - it is deaf as wood; I mean on the Bao I can hear Quanscheng has raeched and opened repeater but Quanscheng can't hear the repeater back, even if I am outside my house, on the open field. It is disappointing.
Since good reception is as important as good transmitter and antenna, I don't recommend buying UV-K5 in it's present form. It has great features, but we don't make QSO's based on features, but based on good reception and proper transmitter. 73!
Only problem with the Bao is that is is inherently dirty and spews out not only high and thus illegal levels of harmonics but also crap below the frequency.
I would like to save 11 meter CB frequencies on the memory slots but either CHIRP or Quansheng programming software seems to does not allow it.... anything I am missing?
Thanks for mentioning the receiver quality. I almost ordered a couple of them.
With the 50 to 1300 firmware, will it receive AM mode in the 225 to 400 MHz mil air band?
Which mini antenna is that? Plz reply. Thanks
On the "for emergency use only" USB-C charging... I'm gonna guess that the radio has a rudimentary embedded charge controller that may not have ben extensively tested and they don't want to be responsible for a lithium cell explosion if the unit overcharges.
I'm sure you could test for this with one of those inline USB-C meters and see if the radio is pulling current even with a fully charged battery and the radio turned off.
When you use the USB for charging, you bypass the "smart" charger in the cradle base.
So would it be safe if you used a good phone charger wall wart thing? I assume it would because I assume there would be good charging control in a good brand one of those..... I charge 2 or 3 baofengs and 2 Motorola PMR446 walkies at the same time with a cheep Chinese powered usb hub thing.... It seems to be working ok.....
@@damiengirvan5020 I really REALLY wouldn't trust my entire radio collection to a no name Chinese charger, they're notorious for missing filter & control components☹️
(I can still smell the melted plastic in my bedroom 🔥)
Try to pick up a cheap Anker, Belkin or similar. The 4 port ones are often on special or secondhand as people upgrade to 6 or 8 port.
Avoid anything less than 60W and without USB C PD.
@@edwardfletcher7790 what is usb pd? I think this is a 7 or 8 port hub.... I think the power supply for it is more than 5 volts.... I think it's about 8 or 9 volts.... But it's still a cheap Chinese one....
@@edwardfletcher7790 dude what does usb c pd mean? Is it something to do with the usb hub or the radio?
I wanted to find out what you had to say about the weaknesses....started watching, started getting annoyed by the elevator music, skipped to the middle......
Have you tried different firmware to see if it improves receive?
Has anybody else told you the music is annoying?
My baofeng uv5r is relatively deaf compared to my yaesu, my kenwood is noticably better than my yaesu. I bought a k6, haven't taken it out of the box yet. Maybe that's a nice place for it?
I have a UV-K5 and two UV-K6 radios and they are receiving at the same strength as my boafengs. You can also installa MOD that makes it receive from 18Mhz to 1300Mhz And more nice features. Like a way better S-meter, play Pong on it and even send short messages from on K5 to another K5.
Yep, same here (reception).
looking at the harmonic content . this is so far the only chinese cheap radio I have found to be in compliance with FCC requirements.
Wow. How annoying and loud is that music. I really wanted to hear the review but gave up due to it being so irritating. Maybe release it again without the music.
The receive is much better on my Baofeng UV-5RA. Better buttons and also lighter. I can barely pick up things with the Quansheng UV-K5(8). The mic is better on the Quansheng though (could just be because of being able to set mic level, have not compared both using external mic yet). Airband is also much better on my Radiwow R108 receiver. Think I'll return the Quansheng and get another Baofeng UV-5R. The novelty of tinkering with the software just isn't enough for me.
I do have the same toughts on the USB charging. Makes me really nervous. I perfer the TD-H3.
Have you had any issues with the firmware updates to enable 800mhz?
I haven't tried it personally as I have nothing 800MHz around me here and I heard the TX is terrible on 800MHz.
It works!
UVK5 HAS A MIC GAIN AJUSTER ALSO
I think sometimes its worth *coming back in the room* and remembering these cost less than a pint of Beer in The West End
Yes it is
I have one of these, only 4 weeks old. It was sitting on my desk and got knocked from sitting vertical to horizontal on the desk (not knocked off the desk or anything) and doesn't work and more. Build quality doesn't seem to be a strong point.....
They are also ugly.
music is louder than your voice
JUS GOT MY UV-K5 and its way better than the UV-5R
1:44 Reception goes all the way up to 1300 Mhz, with a little tinkering.
Just tell me what's 1 better the baofeng or this 1
Hard to say. There are many different baofengs. I'd say it's slightly better than the UV-5R as far as it's vertility. The frequency counter has been useful on the field a lot.
I like your video but the background music for the first 14 minutes is annoying.
I agree, If I wanted to listen to repetitive bump and grind music here over a technical video, I could do that all on my own.
Only one major flaw? Besides that tin can speaker causing deafness?
Airband will never work. No internal AM receiver.
Learn the other features, first. There's a heck of a learning curve to cross.
The screen is sunlight readable, after all. Backlight kinda sucks. Times out too fast.
Upgradeable firmware is the big star here. So is "CHRIP". The new model has been improved, too.
;-)
It's significantly better. Since the original Baofeng, once they were cloned after a year or so, the filtering was absolutely terrible. They splattered all over the place.
So the fact that the UV-K5 doesn't splatter, is a marked improvement.
This is definitely NOT a Baofeng clone...
@@muppetpaster I didn't mean that it was.
I was talking about the fact that not all UV-5Rs are the same.
Most UV-5Rs aren't Baofeng. They're cheap copies. I have 3. One is an original and it doesn't splatter. The other 2 were cheap copies and are terrible.
Nice vid, background track is way too loud.
But the baofeng you cannot upgrade the firmware ... and airband is on Quansheng solved with that update. I have both of them (Baofeng 5RH and UV-K 5(8))
Your video is great just please drop the background music. Very annoying
What's with the annoying music?
Mine certainly had a major flaw. It is never recognised by the PC. Tried everything I could with the drivers etc.. It's always an unknown USB device. Complained to the company but could not be bothered sending it back so they refunded half the price. I just have to do everything from the radio keypad. So, there are occasionally defective units out there...
Hi Tim, that would not be an issue with the radio but with the programming cable youre using. If it recognized it but failed to program it *could* be the radio, but is still more likely the cable. Which one did you get and where from? I recommend the AIOCs I sell on the website or RT system's cables, but any "UV-K5" or "Kenwood" programming cable should work. Anything that says prolific is likely to give trouble too.
Note if you're plugging it in via the USB-C port, there is no expected functionality there other than charging.
@@w1btr It's the cable that came with the radio. Windows sees the radio as an unknown device as soon as the radio is turned on. I think I have another cable somewhere and may try that but not holding out much hope.
Can't you talk a little slower?
You talk 200mp/h, and the background music is to loud, but the radio is nice! - 73 Levi
You have a very low voice and unfortunately I can't hear what you're saying because of the music covering it.
I bought two of these and can confirm the receiving side of this radio sucks baofeng definitely more sensitive

Please be quiet i cant hear the music. 😂
Its mad that the firmware is written in Linux / But for christ sake , its taken a re write to actually download the firmware to thr radio on Chromium at best
11 bucks each 😊buy too😂
The only flaw it has is a piss poor AM receive, bad audio recovery. Otherwise OK. AM overload of audio above 7uv'son my IFR1200 RF service monitor generator.
AM is only barely supported thru a dodgy division hack. The chipset doesn't have native AM.
Lose the background music. Other than that good info.
Super annoying music
Bloody irritating music, probably a good review but can’t listen that bloody music, so 😢
Lose the music dude
It's like a effin intro to a golf ⛳ tournament 😂
I gave up after a minute or so, being hearing impaired and the background "music" destroyed the narration for me.
LOSE THE BACKGROUND MUSIC!!
Another review, again a copy of all others on YT. No news new at all.
Everybody has a opinion on it but what do you expect for $20? A Big Mac with a soda costs the same.
Respect for the people who could make it for that money. If you don`t like it: don`t buy it, if you like it: buy it. It is a nice little rig with lots of possibillitys and give a lot of pleasure.
Kill the music
Damn that music messed up a good video I had to stop watching.
Who cares?
A good number of people actually, but I get it's not engaging for everyone! What type of topics do you enjoy in ham radio?
Drop the bg music!!
Some nice old porno music.
Great video! de W2CSI
