Super review. I’m so glad you decided to listen and give it a chance - I love everything about this album and perfect length to listen all the way through each time I play it - which is essential. Keep up the well thought out reviews!
Grrat review! You are very gifted in your reviews. I love Hackett and have enjoyed this new album. You articulated what I felt but couldn't articulate as well. You scored another grateful subscriber!
i need to listen to it more, Steve is more or less my fav prog artist that is old school and still kicking out new material regularly. I have seen him just about every year for the past 5 years and will be in 3 weeks.
semantic question: do you consider music like this, that is very retro and aiming to sound like old Prog rock actually as PROGRESSIVE? Because this doesn't progress at all. To me, the category for albums like that would be REGRESSIVE Rock
Stable Genius @@terriblecertainity the Pop/Rock Maven speaks! Robert Fripp is hardly contemporary and hasn't released new music in years. Do you really think that the new Mars Volta album is progressive? As the self proclaimed resident expert on all things progressive can you empirically prove that there is no historical through line or musical precedent to back up your claim that the other artists you listed as being truly "progressive?"

Yeah! I'm really glad I kept at this one, it's one of the year's best so far!

I'd love to see him live, must check where he's playing :)
At times, I find Hackett's voice a sticking point. That said, I'll check the album out.
I think he sounds pretty great on this one! Nad Sylvan adds some variety to it as well :)

What contemporary artists do you consider progressive.
