Just saw Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden on his 75th birthday and I remain breathless. I heard 20,000 people sing him Happy Birthday and all the lyrics to Piano Man. The man is historical !! ...and may all his critics wander into the wilderness and stay there.
Can’t believe there were “critics” that crushed him every chance they got. I hate music critics. Talentless talking heads, just like news anchors and politicians. Thanks for all the great tunes.
Reminds me of a line a comedian once said: A critic is someone who knows how to get there but cannot drive. They are annoying!

This is my jam , I’m a native N.Y’er so I have lived this song , Hudson River line has changed a lot since this performance ,but it still amazing to ride . I also had the great privilege and bad luck to be stuck in a traffic jam under a sign next exit Allentown the first time it played on the radio . I used to know Billy’s recording engineer from his 52nd street days who gave me copies of actual recordings done in clubs and bars all over N.Y and Long Island , trust me what the label did was criminal in dubbing in almost all vocals from studio sessions instead of the more nuanced and natural live beauty on location . I wish I could get to his upcoming concert ,he’s been quiet,we’re getting old , and I wanna rock !

I took the ferry at sunrise 🌄 and listened to this song on headphones 🎧 🎵❤️ it was a pretty epic moment of life......this version is Fantastic!

The saxophone solo in this is incredible and really rises above the studio version to me. I mean WOW, it is simply elegant in this version.
i completely disagree- Richie Cannata's original studio solo was the best by far. For some reason it was replaced by a Phil Woods solo when they started remastering the albums, and i think it was way inferior. so unless you have the original columbia pressing of the turnstiles CD, you won't hear it. so weerd

I only recently found out these recordings from 1975 existed. This is mind blowing to me because I was at one of his shows at the Great American Music Hall. I grew up in San Francisco, saw Giants games when Willie Mays was playing, and attended Lowell High School. Billy Joel songs were only played on FM stations but I did catch a couple of his tunes on the radio and went out and bought the Piano Man album. (Probably at Tower Records on Columbus Ave.). At the time, a friend told me Billy Joel was in town doing shows at the GAMH so a group of us went. We were underage so I think the back of our hands were stamped and we had to sit in the balcony in a certain area for minors. The club didn’t fit a lot of people and maybe there were 150-200 at the venue the night we saw him. It was in the middle of the week if I remember correctly. Billy Joel was phenomenal and had a really tight band. I currently live in Omaha, Nebraska far removed in time and distance, but these recordings bring back such wonderful memories.

Given how loved and famous this man is, it sounds weird for me to say he is grossly underrated and underappreciated - by the 'establishment' critics, I guess. But he hardly cares. We don't care. Listen to this voice, damn. One of the greatest American artists of any era. We were blessed to experience it while it was happening.
He's simply Fantastic! His lyrics are brilliant...love him.

I just listened to this song. When it was finished I randomly picked up a book and opened it to a random page and the first two words on the page were "New York". I don't know what it means but that was pretty cool.

私は LP 250枚以上はあると思いますが、初めて買ったのが ポールマッカートニー&ウイングスのビーナスアンドマーズで最後に勝ったのはマドンナの TRUE BLUEやヒューイルイス&ザニュースでしたね、もう CDはありすぎて正式な枚数を聞いたら ひいてしまいますよ。
先ほど コーラスをしている人 調べたらもちろんいましたよ。その他 もちろんユーミン 、尾崎亜美、矢野顕子、ブレッド&バター、小坂忠 すごいメンバーですね😝🎵👍
