      Yeah, that was infuriating and incredibly disappointing.
      Made no sense to give up so easily after so much time and effort to finally get back together and be married.
      Just didn't fit and, unless I'm mistaken, the alternate ending doesn't even fix this, but just hints that they might get back together again.
      It doesn't change what they did by needlessly breaking them up again, especially after so much time spent on getting them back together and most of the season spent on their wedding.

      They spent 9 seasons tell us all the reasons Ted and Robin were terrible for each other then like 3 seasons (I can't remember when they first got together) telling us all the reasons why Robin and Barney were perfect for each other then took an entire 20-22 episode season to show us their wedding weekend just to break them up 10 minutes later and have Ted and Robin be endgame?! Like what sense does that make? Am I supposed to believe Robin and Ted are going to have a good relationship now? They were always better as friends and Robin and Barney were amazing together romantically. Robin and Barney should've travelled the world together as a couple and come back to visit the rest of the gang for the big things. That would be the best ending.

Kind of like he is trying to release some guilt by letting the kids now how he met Robin then their mother. In one episode in an earlier season, Ted wishes he would of met her sooner so he could have had more time with her. The whole time during the story, he talks about Robin and almost none of it is relevant to their mother. You can get a hint that he's thinking fondly of Robin after it having been some time after the mother passed. The story about him meeting their mother had so many life lessons covered in humor and sometimes no humor at all, to tell us of life's melancholy and how we still maintain hope and stay open to love. The show had too much realism for you to not suspect there wasn't a picture perfect ending, which is why I loved it and cried. It was soo similar to what actually happens in life at times, that i suspect most people were upset they didn't give us an escapism with a picture perfect ending. It was a cue for us to keep hope and love through all our tribulations, and the blue horn at the end with Robin was the silver lining. I don't really get how so many people hated it.

    The problem with the ending is that the writers had locked themselves into it. With the format of Ted telling the story to his kids in the future, they had to film all the time of him talking to them a the beginning so it wouldn't look like they aged. The problem is they didn't have the entire show written out at that point. They couldn't predict how the characters would develop and grow, so when they got to the end they had to bend back their character arcs to fit the original ending instead of creating a new one that fits their development which is why it's so unsatisfying for the viewers. Personally, I think they should've let the kids age and just leaned into it for comedic effect. Like the jokes where the kids say "it feels like you've been telling us this story for years" they also could've said "yeah I feel like I've aged four years" and that's just part of the joke because we've seen them age but in the story it's still this one night that Ted decided to tell his kids how he met their mother. It would've been meta and funny! Then the writers would have more freedom to come up with a more satisfying ending.

    Why i hate the ending so much is the fact that the ending made Tracy a "step". The biggest problem between Ted and Robin is the fact that one of them wants kids and the other doesn't. So the ending just makes it like the mother is just a way to make Ted have kids and for Robin not to be the mother of those kids. It makes it like Tracy wasn't Ted's soulmate or the love his life, she was just a STEP to have Robin and Ted end up together. One of things that piss me off is the fact that there are so many references in the show about how Robin and Ted arent meant to be together (for example the olive theory being disproved because Robin started to like olives) and also why the hell does Marshall keep trying to convinve Ted to go after Robin. Does he not get that ROBIN DOESN'T LOVE TED ANYMORE. To me that was one of the worst things Marshall did to Ted. In the first half you seemed adamant that Ted's behaviour was creepy though at one point you asked if he was endearing and an episode of HIMYM actually talks about it, the show says that if both people are into each other, then a big romantic gesture works: Dobler, but if one person isn't into the other, the same gesture comes off serial-killer crazy: Dahmer. I've always thought it was so interesting that this concept directly applies to Ted's one-sided relationship with Robin in season 1

Barney and Robin were perfect for each other, and throughout the series it was so obvious that Robin wasn't the right girl for Ted but Tracy was. Also they gave Barney so much character development when he finally decided to stop chasing girls and go after Robin ending in the Final Page, and that was undone by their divorce.

    I know the whole character of Barney is gross and he is an actual rapist, but at least it was so over-the-top that it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. The main issue with the ending is that it undos all character and relationship development that people were invested in for 9 seasons.
      Season 9 especially is basically just the story of Ted finally letting Robin go and at the same time Barney maturing into a loyal husband... And within the last two episodes, they just undo all of it. There is no true conclusion, just a forced setback to Season 1 - cutting out the death of the mother and Barneys and Robins divorce in the alternate ending dosen't fix that, because the conclusion is still missing.

    I still think the reveal should have been that Ted was dying, not Tracy. It would explain why he would take take so long to get to the meeting of the mother, because he wanted his kids to know his story. There’s that scene in the last season when Ted starts crying when Tracy mentioned a mother not being there for her daughter’s wedding. The gang always made fun of him for being effeminate so it would have been a gag in a dark humor kind of way that Ted sees himself as the mother of the bride, instead of the obvious crying because Tracy is dying. Then they wouldn’t have had to ruin 9 seasons of character growth. The last scene could have been the gang plus Tracy surrounding Ted and telling him that they love him, and we as the audience gets to see that yes, they’re still close, that we heard this story to understand that this is why he wants them by his side when he’s on his deathbed.

      It's an interesting take, but honestly just way too dark
      I'd prefer it if it just ended with "And kids, that's the story of how I met your mother", they have a somber scene about the mother passing away, then there's a knock on the door, the gang shows up, laughing, Lily says something like "Ted, are you pestering your kids with those stories again, it's Thanksgiving, stop blabbering and come help me with the Turkey"
      Then the camera shows everyone with their family, Robin with her dogs sitting at the same table, just eating, having a great time
      The camera zooms out, maybe Ted narrates something along the lines of "Kids, I never told you this, but of all the wonderful things your mother gave me, the one thing that got me through all of it, was an amazing story to tell you all someday".
      I have no idea why the ending had to be about Ted and Robin, or any individual at all
      And the kids were wrong, this wasn't a story about Ted and Robin, it was a story about a group of friends and their bond, their crazy stories
      So why not end with that ?
      Why not end with a shot of everyone together even at the end ?
      Even with the already filmed footage, just film new footage without the kids

    The producers and Ted did the exact same thing, they had that familiar, comfortable story and they couldn't see how wrong it had become for them and let it go.
    I know they had filmed the children's "you like aunt Robin" scene all the way back in season 1 to avoid having to recast different kids after the actors would've grown up but they were many ways around that. Like Ted, they just couldn't step back and see that after 9 seasons Ted/Robin didn't fit or make sense anymore.
    I wish they would've just scraped that scene, gotten the kids' actors back all grown up, sat them in that couch and had them joke that "Dad, you tell us the same story every year". Either with the mom peeking inside the room to joke with them and look at Ted lovingly, or still dead and a bittersweet comment from Ted about his love for her or not forgetting her or something.

      It's worse than that, they apparently filmed the "you like aunt Robin" scene during production of Season 2. Which started with Ted and Robin together. It would've been half-way understandable if Robin remained "The one that could've been", "The one that got away" etc., but they've immediately shot themselves in the foot by introducing the having them already be exes.

    The last two episodes just felt SO wrong. It was a big slap in the face to the fans who dedicated a whole decade watching this show, growing to love these characters and growing up alongside them as well. Granted not every show has to have a happy ending, but this is a comedy and it just made no sense: it was rushed and completely flushed years of character development down the drain. One of the big points of the show is the friendship between these characters. Having them be estranged was horrible. Such a shame because the show itself is so good and a comfort series to many. The fact that Dylan was able to detect how horrible it ended when he only watched a few episodes says a whole lot about the ending. This video just re ignited my frustration LOL. Honestly I hated the last season’s pacing but I realized that the pacing probably allowed the audience to empathize with the characters a lot more. I think Robin, Barney and all of their friends probably felt just as betrayed and frustrated as the audience, and probably more, because the RobinxBarney relationship that they had invested so much time and effort into and thought was endgame was torn away from them so quickly in relation to how much time they had invested into it. It was like a longer version of the episode where Marshall’s dad died- where everything was great and then at the very end it was unexpectedly ripped away from him. This emphasis on the sudden shock of loss makes sense given how the series was inspired by 9/11.

      I don't necessarily agree, as I got older I actually appreciated the ending more. It was pretty realistic, life can suck, people die, friends who were once really close grow appart as they get older, that's life. I liked the ending with Robin and Ted. It made sense, they were not right for each other when they were younger, the timing was never right, they always wanted different things. He met Tracy and was very happy with her for many years and she was everything he always wanted. Sadly she passed. Again that's life. There is not just one person for you. You can have several "soulmates", there is not just one person who can make you happy. He mourned his wife for years and realized it was time to move on and the timing might now be right with Robin. The look on her face when she saw him stand outside her window was really touching. The show started with that and ends with that, knowing everything that happened in between.. I think its beautiful. And I never was a Ted and Robin "shipper", I just loved all the characters. I remember being frustrated at the time that we didnt see Tracy more after all the build up. But then realized that I got it all wrong all along. It never was just about Tracy, it was about Ted's journey. Searching for love, finding it, losing it, losing hope, finding Tracy thanks to fate, losing her...and opening his heart again. Asking his kids if its ok for him to open his heart again to a woman who was also one of the greatest love of his life.

    I spent 8 years of my life watching this show and I came to the same conclusions you did after only watching the first two and last two. The series finale actually aired on March 31st and I genuinely thought it was an April Fool's Day prank. Like, I waited all day the next day for them to announce it but they did not. Essentially what happened was that the creators filmed those last scenes of the kids way back when they were filming the first season so they could use them in the eventual finale since the actors would be much older then and wouldn't be able to film them at the time. Their goal at the beginning of the show was for Ted and Robin to end up together. The issue ended up being that as the show went on and characters grew and evolved, it became clear that they weren't right for each other, but they really didn't want to give up on that pre-recorded ending so they forced it which meant they had to make all of the characters revert back to who they were in season 1. Huge mess.

    The only problem with ending was that they rushed it( instead of going one whole season with wedding and breaking them up the next episode ,they could have given few episodes to show how it did not work out between robin and barney, could have shown more of tracy and ted and tracy's sickness and how robin realises that ted was someone she should have ended up with but could not (there is a deleted clip of ted and robin having lunch which would have made so much more sense if included in show)) .The story was always about ted and robin , they both were into each other but wanted different things in life but later got together when they had their different things sorted and finally could get together as the timing for them was finally right❤. This sitcom shows how really life is ,it has heartbreaks, bad timining, death, growing up and growing apart ,friendship and love❤.

    No series finale has ever infuriated me more. The very first episode of this show told us that Robin was Aunt Robin meaning that she and Ted don't end up together, which is now an absolute lie. They spent years developing Barney and Robin just to undo it all in seconds (after an entire season at their wedding). Both Robin and Tracy (the mother) deserved better.

    • @ren55mira57
      @ren55mira57 Před 2 lety +8

      i disagree about robin... Tracy definitely deserved a better ending and a more prominent role considering she is what the story's meant to be about. I never really felt like robin was invested in her relationship with either barney or ted. Right before her wedding, she was seriously considering running off with ted or just running off, while barney was debating which tie she would like better. She really played them both over 9 years (i.e. choosing her therapist over barney, when he gave up Nora for her)

    • @menoguchi
      @menoguchi Před 2 lety +6

      @@ren55mira57 That seems like an oversimplification tbh. Robin and Kevin were already dating before she cheated on him with Barney; and the reason why she decided to stay with Kevin instead of going back to Barney was made pretty explicit in that episode. Kevin suited her emotional needs and understood her much better, at least at that point in her life. Barney still had some growing up to do. I really dislike Ted and Robin together because I feel like Ted is chasing after an idea of Robin that he has in his mind rather than the real girl, and I feel like Barney was also going through something similar at that point. Eventually, I believe he started to understand Robin for who she was, but I don't think he, at that time, was ready for that monumental kind of commitment.
      Also, Robin was panicking before her wedding because, up to the last minute, she wholeheartedly believed Barney couldn't commit to another person and settle down with her (and the season finale pretty much justified her fears. Ugh. I hate that ending so much). _She_ believed _he_ wasn't invested in the relationship, because Ted was the one who actually tracked down her necklace, not Barney. But Robin and Barney talked it out afterwards, and Robin realizes that her fears were unfounded (if only...). _That's_ what made their relationship so great, imo. Their shared history wasn't just thrown out the window when they decided to get married. They still had issues, they clashed with each other and they had previous personal knowledge about the worst traits in one another, but they worked so much harder than any other couple in that series in order to make their relationship work, and it frustrastes me to no end that the writers decided it all should be flushed down the toilet.

    I don't know how I never anticipated you doing this show for this series, but I'm so glad you did. It's nice to see someone come in with fresh eyes and call out what we all did back at the time of airing. They spent 8 seasons writing their character arcs and developing relationships and giving us one example after another of why Ted and Robin didn't work, and then the entirety of season 9 was the weekend of their wedding. The Mother make appearances throughout the last season since she was in the wedding band and they do a lot of time jumps back and forth, but yeah, it's just- The writers had this ending planned from the get-go, and filmed with the actors who play Ted's kids, and rather than recognize that they wrote themselves beyond their original plans, they belligerently stuck to their original plan and flushed NINE SEASONS worth of character development down the drain in 45 minutes. Like, you hit the nail on the head.

Ted telling them the story because their mother died and he's finally ready to move on was fine - It makes sense when you remember that he spent SO long telling this story.
