The Rinkhals or the Ring-necked spitting cobra (Hemachatus haemachatus) is a very interesting venomous snake living in the southern part of Africa. Did you know that it is not a true cobra? In this video we will explain why. You will also see wild Rinkhals with different coloration showing different behavior, such as hooding, spitting and playing dead.

Outstanding! Seems to me Rinkhals are an exemplar of convergent evolution. The spitting and hooding of true cobras, the keeled scales of many aquatic frog/fish eaters, the play-dead act broadly distributed among species, and to me the most profound, is the similarity to the Eastern Hognose snake of North America. That species shares, diet, play-dead, hooding, and keeled scales, and an upturned snout, albeit that feature is subtle in Rinkhals. Put all that together with the snakes beauty and the spectacular habitat it thrives in, and that makes it my favorite snake! :)

Stunning film work as always. I ❤ these snakes. So beautiful and at the same time a bit comical (but dangerous). Funny to watch how they play dead and also when they look like they’re almost falling over when they spit. So many differences in how the individual snakes are coloured. One of my very favorite species.

As i have said before i am not a big fan of snakes but i have always found this specie's to be my favorite. They have a mystery behind them and i love how black their heads and eyes are even seen one of you all reflection from its eyes. You dont have to like or love snakes to admire and respect them and if you really think about it most encounters with snakes are our own fault taken their habitat away to the point they have no choice but to live nears us. Remember if you like snakes or not there's no need to mess with or kill them just like us they want to be left alone and go about their day and do the job they were born to do. As always a great documentary would love to see your work on some kind of streaming platform you all deserve for your work to been seen by millions and educate future generations.
