While most of us likely think Melonie was gullible, as often good friends are, there is no reason to think she might not have started thinking there was something very wrong about being asked to lie about having a child that the authorities are looking for. In hindsight, L.E. would likely have gone to her house to verify J.J. was there if she said he was so it would have been quite foolish for her to lie about it and would have implicated her in his disappearance, Lori's way of getting someone else involved in his disappearance. Lori had no conscience regarding her husbands or her own children, a friend "thrown to the wolves" would have meant nothing to her.
I think the defense is going to paint her as a liar and a unreliable witness. Just my guess. But, he already did do a good job of that at this hearing. She wasn’t asked to record that conversation.
