Part 2: Melanie Gibb describes zombies, JJ disappearing & the 'fatal attraction' between Chad & Lori

- It was September 2019. Lori Vallow was moving to Rexburg, Idaho, from Gilbert, Arizona. She didn't want to go at first, according to her best friend, Melanie Gibb, but Chad Daybell insisted she make the move.
"She said she thought Chad would come to be with her in Arizona, and then she said, 'I changed my plans. I think I'm supposed to be up there (in Idaho). He says I'm supposed to be up there, but I need to get my own answer to find out if I’m supposed to be there,'" Gibb recalls.
Lori prayed and eventually, she said she received the answer that she needed to move to Rexburg to be with Chad, Gibb says. But there was one complication - Chad's wife, Tammy Daybell, was still alive.
"She was uncomfortable with it. She believed that Tammy was going to pass away, though, before she got up there," Gibb says. "That didn’t happen. She didn’t pass away before (Lori) got up there."
Gibb says Lori thought Tammy might die in a car crash -- but that didn't happen.
Lori moved into a townhouse in Rexburg with her two children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan, the first week of September. Lori's brother, Alex Cox, arrived a few days later and rented a different townhouse in the same complex. Gibb visited Sept. 19 and remembers walking around the Brigham Young University-Idaho campus and indoor track with Lori and Chad, who were holding hands and kissing.
"I said, 'Aren’t you worried that people are going to see you?' She says, 'Well, Tammy doesn't come out a lot.' ... They said a lot of people that knew Chad didn't know what Tammy looked like because they didn't do a lot of things together," Gibb says.
During their walk, Alex babysat JJ at home, but Tylee was not there, and Lori never mentioned her. Weeks earlier, Gibb had spoken to Lori on the phone after she moved to Rexburg and heard Tylee yelling in the background, so she was surprised the 17-year-old was not around.
"I was told she was at (BYU-Idaho)," Gibb recalls. "I knew that Tylee had her GED, which she got when she was 16 or 17 ... There were definitely question marks. It didn't feel real. It didn't feel like the truth. I didn’t know what to say about it. I wouldn't assume that she had done something to her. It was unusual."
Equally concerning was what Lori said about JJ when Gibb arrived in Idaho.
"She said that he had turned into a zombie the day before I got there, and she was pointing out behaviors of his. ... She was trying to create uncertainty in me about what I saw. ... I was looking at him and thought, 'I don't know. He looks just like JJ to me,'" Gibb says.
This wasn't the first time Lori had spoken to Gibb about zombies.

I wonder how much they really could have done though. At that point Lori still had the support of many people in her own family. They needed to do some type of emergency intervention for the sake of the kids. They did not take Charles seriously enough. They needed to put pressure on her within her own support system. I doubt anything else would have worked.. If the kids are alive I guarantee that Tylee has been brainwashed. Poor Charles was setup and I feel he trusted the wrong people. Lori was at the top of that list.

Well, this interview was taped prior to the kids being found dead. I’m not sure she knew at this point. People want to blame her, but she’s the one who originally went to the police to break this case wide open. If she did know, she prolly went to the police and this interview was a head fake so she didn’t get killed!

I agree, the use of the word "love" sounds off somehow. But I think that within their little cult there was a lot of expression of love amongst those who were "the chosen ones."
@Nature Witch there are plenty of cases of sane people having visions that have been verified. I started having intrusive thoughts (but more like a snapshot of a picture or 2 second video) about buildings falling about a month before 9/11. I told my boss, who was a psych nurse), my therapist (who i saw for ptsd childhood stuff), and my husband about it. I even changed departments at work to work in the emergency services department bc i knew "something" was going to happen. When I walked into work that morning and saw the buildings falling I knew that's what it was. It was by no means specific or could be used to pinpoint anything coming, but it was verified by 3 people and my therapist showed me where it was written in my chart. I've had other, less dramatic experiences, but I'm in no way in cloud cookoo,.

@@watchgoose Not in reference to what has happened here. In normal cases, yes it is a polite way to say someone has died. But, in discussing the methodical, premeditated ways these victims have died, it's very clear it's murder.
She is smoothing things out......makes her feel better about it. I see a silent accomplice who knew but who looked the other way until it got public. Now she is saving her image, again, with her gentleness and her belief in the scriptures. Not really impressing to me. She should have come to the police, much sooner. *Or, possibly Melanie G was just convinced at the time that Chad (and Lori's) issues were related to custody because that's what she was "told". Thus, biologically Melanie G. understood Tylee had no connections to Kay & Larry. ONLY JJ DID. (Possible.)
Worse case scenario Melanie G. only saw a way to save one child (amongst all of Chad's Zombie beliefs - made up rules). Melanie could argue JJ was NOT biologically related to Lori. Thus, Lori and or Chad did NOT have to comply with Zombie rules ... not their offspring. (If she's desperate to think up a reason - any reason.) *Or, was Melanie G. only afraid for the cult and or those involved in Tylee's alleged kidnapping? Was killing JJ just too risky? Too much attention in the cult. *And, thus would simply be "best" if Lori surrendered JJ to Kay & Larry ... even if no way for Melanie (or anyone) to save Tylee; either because too late or blood relationship.

Just rewatching this for the millionth time and I can't believe I've not picked this up before. The whole mission was focused on ridding the world of Zombies before tribulations. That's what Melanie said, she knew Tylee disappeared and Lori had called her a zombie, she knew Charles was murdered for being a zombie. So why did Melanie believe (based on the discussion JJ was a zombie and had to go) that Lori was going to send him to Kay whom she also believed to be a zombie??? Considering all had to be destroyed, I find it highly unlikely. I am going out on a limb here, and I think some people will be offended….but I think Melanie had a moral obligation to make a real and concerted effort to push back against Lori and put eyes on both of the children and take them with her, and keep them away from Lori! She definitely failed both of those sweet children.

Charles went to Melanie and expressed his concern about Lori telling him he was going to be destroyed by her. He was extremely worried about his safety and the kids as well. Not only did Melanie not help him, she went with Lori to the police (after Charles tried to have her mentally evaluated) and seemed pretty supportive of her. As far as me being young, I'll take that as a compliment😉because I'm not. I'm also one of the most open minded people ever but if a friend of mine starts talking about how her kids have been turning into zombies and other people who she had previously accused of being zombies have either been shot (Charles) or died under very mysterious circumstances (Chad's wife Tammy) I would be VERY concerned for those kids. I have a feeling many facts are still in the dark about this case, and more people are involved. I believe Melanie Gibb is also involved, and knows way more than she leads us to believe in this interview. I believe the only reason she is testifying is to save her own skin. I do think she also believed Chad Daybell's teachings and books and she was apart of it. I can't wait to see what comes out in the actual trial. All these people are sick in the head.

He doesn't need "kudos". He did a professional interview, period. An interviewer is not to assume anything. He was informed and knowledgeable. The interviewee did an excellent job too - she is honest, and did not seem to be trying to conceal things.
I am sorry but this guy did not ask any “probing” questions. And she never gave any really good or detailed answers to the questions. She was smiling through this interview - focused more on her 15 minutes of fame. It is obvious from the get go this had absolutely nothing to do with religious beliefs. This was a man and woman who wanted to be together and who had decided they would kill anybody in their way in order to be together.
I like how she says “people passing away” like it was a horrible car accident; no Lori and Chad killed the kids, it wasn’t passive....so sad.
I've heard her recording with a friend, who didn't know that she was being recorded and her attitude is completely different! She's grandiose like she's an insider and knew everything! Like that Tylee was already dead etc. This interview is nothing like what she's like during this phonecall! Absolutely FOUL! Another point, she actually did lie to the police about having JJ! For ten days! Then she came clean 10 days later! FOUL. She's way more involved than she wants anyone to know.

Watched this entire interview back after Lori and Chad were indicted today. And, honestly, this interview disturbs me more now than it did even when I first watched it. Everyone close to Lori and Chad had hands in taking part in committing these murders (allegedly) Alex and Melanie (Loris niece) hid and manipulated so much to help them carry out their crimes, not to mention Alex actually mirdering Charles... you can not tell me that this Melanie also wasn’t more involved than she’s letting on here.. I think when the kitchen got hot, she flipped before she went down in flames with them. It likely will save her jail time, too, bc the prosecution needs her testimony in order to convict Lori and Chad. I believe she had immunity, if I’m not mistaken.. All the talk of how she always had doubt in the back of her mind...? How does that make sense, when; in real life, everyone they considered Zombies were dying left and right? I think that the deaths just strengthened her beliefs in Chad, and that’s why she stayed quiet. But, Lori hitting her with the ‘JJ story’, being with her and having a call from the police spooked TF out of her so she decided to save herself.
The way she articulates her feelings around Chad and Lori and remembers fondly almost every interaction she recalls, and can’t do the same when speaking about JJ or Tylee... just doesn’t sit right with me.
Maybe I’ll come back and watch again in a year, hopefully we will have a trial by then, and we can finally have the justice for everyone who was coldheartedly murdered by the God-Complex Squad..

Nate Easton is such a phenomenal journalist & interviewer. It would have been very easy for him to pin her down, twist her words, try to trip her up but instead he just focused on getting all the info he could from MG without attacking her or pushing her. He asked reasonable, relevant, pertinent questions & directed the conversation to gain as much info as possible while never once judging MG or trying to influence the direction the interview went. That's not easy to accomplish. There is no bias in his interview. He gave her the benefit of the doubt at every turn. Whether she deserved it or not is another matter. But he did a phenomenal job

I commend this reporter/interviewer for keeping his composure throughout this interview. I think she could have helped Save lives if she would have spoken out. The police should have looked at Charles allegations and taken him at face value for his worries. I feel there is more to this ladies story than what she's saying. The four co-conspirators behaved like they were pulling a prank on the outcast kid in middle school, that lead to his suicide. She was the cheerleader they needed to have the courage to follow through the murder of an unsuspecting man and two children. Melanie mostly takes the position that JJ was a “handful” based on Lori’s reporting. Not once did she realize he was the child, and she and Lori were supposed to be the adults. She, at the least , covered for her friend when it was obvious there was no safe place for children to be, having to strongly suspect, or know they were dead, murdered.
