I love Carry Handle AR-15s
Joe will never ban the larp
There's no 'validity' to a retro build, nor should there be. The joy of building and running any gun is enough to justify its existence.
Well said, Jim!
Amen
100% agree!
Well said. I mean have you seen Priject Atrocious or the original Yeet Cannon? Completely done just for the love of the build and serve no other purpose
Fun that hurts no one else is still fun you have, which tends to be a good thing :)
They worked then, they work now. A flat top is a never ending rabbit hole, a contest of keeping up with the Jones, or whatever the more famous you tubers are rocking. If you're into guns you get and rock what you can afford. If it's a 10/22, to a sig spear with the latest lvpo, flashlight etc. Just go have fun, and practice with it.
100% thanks for watching and commenting
I personally use a carry handle, for no other reason except I like them. They make optics a pain, but I run a primary arms 2.5x prism, fits perfectly.
I love all carry handles, they’re just convenient, AR, FAL, SAW, RPK. They all kick ass.
100% 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 thanks for watching!!!
I love them as iron sights too but have you looked at the gooseneck mounts? I've been wanting to try that. A meprolight reflex up front gives it a flat smooth profile with your irons lined right up just in case. I've been wanting to try it out after i saw them.
@@YerGoodBuddyKeithyep!
czcams.com/video/eejkB-mRkCE/video.htmlsi=MntpSpuIWjbyEY6W
can i ask what carry handle irons you run? i’m looking at some detachable colt sights which i hear are the best but they are pretty expensive
Maybe I’m a Fudd (OK, I’m a Fudd) but I think that rifle looks 100x cooler than the new lightweight be-railed stormtrooper ARs that are all the rage today. 🤷♂️
100%!!! ARs have become very trite so to go back and relook the originals is very interesting
I remember those. At my first duty station in Korea with the Army in 2004 our mechanics that rode around on the M88 carried those. The OG “just for mechanics and tankers” carry handle M4’s made all of us stuck with M16A2’s jealous. Good looking build.
Death before dismount 😏
The first thing I thought when I clicked on this video was "I hope he finds a way to retain the irons... and you did. In a great way, that doesn't require flipping anything up or down or out of the way. Nice job! I love this build.
Thanks!!! I really love this set up.
Carry handle ARs are so hot right now
Hansel, he’s so hot right now
I read both of those as Mugatu😂
@@kylewhite8434 oh I’m sorry did my pin get in the way of your ASS??!!!
@FitnFire diffently hot right now😂
"Sometimes your friends die in a freak, retro carry handle ar15 gunfight accident"
-Zoolander...........probably.
Retro Rifles still have the ability to be a relevant fighting tool. Even the most basic M4gery is a better fighting tool than just a handgun. I prefer the simplicity of basic iron sights and the M16A1 carry handle has became my 1# choice. Being a fellow Native Kansan I built what I wanted instead of conforming to the market. After a small journey I ended up with a 723 carbine style upper on a KP15 with a Schmid trigger, a magpul handguard, and a handguard mounted light. Its light, quick handling, shoots great groups, & works good for taking out coyotes
Exactly. Mil spec never stopped working just because of all the new accessories and rifle configurations.
Why build an inferior firearm..Aim points etc are much better than iron sights..
@@hairydogstail Not sure why some of the best iron sights on combat proven rifle (M16A1 or M16A2) would be considered inferior. I could mount a dot on top of the carry handle and I might, but I like the simplicity of irons. After all it's my Carbine and a continuing project to find whats right for me. I think you forget that proficiency with a tool matters just as much as the tool. Getting more proficient with Irons has made me practice more on my fundamentals of shooting and makes me a better all around marksman.
I understand that until you try to use them at night..Not good..@@prescotian1500
@@prescotian1500 And optics without etched reticles that are battery powered can fail. Optics can lose zero and are subject to impacts and water. Even if an optic is used there should at least be backup iron sights. Its one of the things I don't like on modern sporter bolt rifles that do not come from the factory with iron sights. Some bolt rifles used to have irons but not any more.
All things go in cycles. Over the past 2 years optic mount heights have grown until we find ourselves right back to carry handle height. I'm all for it, I hope AR makers start offering more permanently attached carry handle options, I have only managed to get my hands on one and it is set up in a 20" A2 just like the first rifle I was handed in the army. It is a retro build with the LMT M203 replica 37mm launcher on it and I love it.
Why?? What is the point??
I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you asking why someone would build a nostalgic retro build when they already own close to a dozen AR’s set up to handle all manner of scenarios aligned to the very latest in fighting theory? Well, because we have more disposable income, and we already have more than what we need in serious go to rifles. If you’re asking what the point of a carry handle is, I think that’s just what I addressed, it allows a rock solid, mounting option for placing an optic higher than what we’ve spent the last 10 years doing.
I’d love to be able to do a A2 with M230…such a vibe!
Love it. Old school cool never goes out of style. someone always comments about my 35 yer old Colt govt carbine when it's at the range. Grey parkerizing, A2 carry handle, 2 position stock and super light weight.
Sweet! Thanks for watching
I love building retro I built an A1 carbine years ago. I spent years going through gun shows picking up correct parts to build it and it’s one of many rifles I have built over the years. I have all the modern bills and whistles on some of my guns, but sometimes simple is better
Correct…simple is all you need sometimes
My first build was a clone of what i was issued in basic training ('93) , m16a2 .....its still my main rifle👍
Right on…thanks for watching
Love retro builds. My #1 is a reproduction M16A1 with the tulip flash hider and triangular handguards. Those 20 rounders are a bit difficult to source though! I often return to retro guns as I was extensively trained on irons in the Army.
Right on...thanks for watching!
The Carry Handle Gang is strong...I several ARs with A2 uppers. One slick side A1 and just bought another A1 upper for my M733 Heat build. I BELIEVE the retro scene has gained a lot of traction because, 1) MSG Gordon and Blood Diamond. 2) Your everyday American doesn't need all that rail estate to have an effective defense rifle. 3) 300 yard hits can be achieved without a LPVO. 4) very high optic mounts have become the norm due to night vision. So carry handled uppers are inherently ready for 'heads up' shooting. And finally, they're just retro sexy.
Those are all valid points and perfectly outline the majority of my reasoning.
Literally just took the red dot and magnifier off my Colt M4 3 days ago in favor of the carry handle. No more battery or back up sights to contend with. It's ready to go and just as quick with sight acquisition for home defense purposes. However, I still have a red dot for the 300 blk out which at 8.5" is better suited for both eyes open CQB.
Thanks for watching
Love it, Just finished up my M4A1 Block 1 build and already had the gordy setup but next year will be my year shooting the block 1 in competition so let’s see how she do
I’ve been thinking of doing a Block 2 😬
That will absolutely shoot bullets. Definitely valid. Although I would have deviated with a flash hider that could accept a can, other than a gatelock.
I may venture to a Keymo JMAC break in the future
I would make the argument retro rifles are simple lightweight and a good tool to have for yourself or some other individual if you decide you can share your guns. Also guerilla tactics would be hit n run so lightweight makes sense. Or be Lucas and try to make everyone a sniper
LOLZ...good ol' Lucas Thotkin
I'm guessing they went flat top to make picrail mounting of optics with co witnessing easier. There's also the cheek weld aiming you can do with a lower mounted sight.
Nice man, I love those carry handle ARs. I've had a Potomac Armory C7 upper sitting around just waiting for my next next build which will be a Gordon Carbine clone.
Oh man…a C7?! Sweet! Thanks for watching
@@FitnFireYes sir. The C7 was a bit expensive but worth it to me so I can make the Gordon as accurate a clone as possible. It's taking a while to piece it together but the finished product will be a gem. That man deserves a huge amount of respect for what he did that day, and this project is kind of my way of showing it.
Your channel has some great content. Subscribed.
I really like the looks of this rifle :) I think I may follow in your footsteps!
Dooooooo it!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I like the build. I would put a slim version of the handguard on but that my personal preference.
Right on…different strokes for different folks 😏🙌🏻
I have three AR platforms (11.5 pistol, 16" and 20" rifles) ; all of which are flattops which have carry handles. I grew up in the '90s where the A2 and M4A1 were what ARs looked like, and I greatly prefer that aesthetic. They're simple, light, and both fun and easy to shoot. No optics just yet, but I'm thinking a dot or a 1x prism on the 11.5", a 3x on the 16", and a 5x on the 20".
Right on! Thanks for watching
did the same thing. CAR -15 clone of my first issued rifle.
Sweet…thanks for watching
I like the idea of a fixed carry handle upper for the "truck gun" concept where the rifle may be banging around and experiencing daily humidity and temperature swings that could be hard on an optic and associated electronics. It's a robust sighting system that is virtually guaranteed to be right where you zeroed it. An A1 upper would be an even better system for this.
Great point!!! Thanks for watching
I bought to rifles specifically for the carry handle; XM177E2 and M16A1. Both have the Brownell's Retro 4x scope.
The 4x scope is very accurate. The POA = POI.
Thanks for watching
Seeing how we've come full circle back to high optics it's the internal changes that really matter, mostly the M4 feed ramps and some other minor improvements.
💯 🙌🏻…thanks for watching
Great video 👍 I love old school vintage looking AR-15. I only have.300 Blackout AR-15 and I built a Windham Weaponry AR into a retro carry handle gun its my home defense gun. Its literally my cheapest AR-15 it's just to cool to stay in my gun safes lol. There are LWRC and SOLGW Ar's in my gun safe and the old school vintage looking gun gets the home defense role makes no sense 😔.
Nice lineup! Thanks for watching
I like the look of the old M16A1s. I was in the mid-80s to early 90s.
Seems like a very decent build for a truck gun or bedside gun, as long as one isn't pulling out the NODs, uncomplicated, lightweight, tight package.
Right on…thanks for watching
Great video! Love the retro rifle.
Thanks for watching
I didn’t know the difference between f marked and non f marked. Thanks for sharing!
You bet!!! It’s a nuance that people pass up
1973, USAF Security Policeman and Armorer. I'm looking to build a "replica" of my service M16A1 (I OWNED a full auto version until the world went weird, that went to an FFL)... MSgt USAF ret '73-'95 S.E.A. to the Sandbox.
I built a full-length AR rifle with BCA upper 20-inch CHF barrel, Essential Arms lower, and Geissele Automatics running gear.
I Love a carry Handel with scope mounted on top🇺🇸🫡
Thanks!
I "built" a very similar setup with a XM-177 style muzzle device, also from TNTE Sales
Sweet! Thanks for watching
I just got my 3rd AR, and this one I am definitely going to do the classic handle.! What kind of front sight do I do I need? Right now it has flip up sights, from the box. Thanks for any advice.
Being a bit of a dinosaur, and a Marine from the '70s, I far prefer the retro style. My top priority for '24 is an A1 clone, then maybe clones of the later service rifles. With the Brownell's Retro scope, it should fit most of my purposes nicely. Currently, I enjoy a Sport II with a Magpul handguard, and sometimes run a detachable GI-style carry handle.
Brownells is doing some great things with their retro line.
@@FitnFire Yep! I really perked up when I saw that. There are still those pesky things called dollars... 🤔
Merry Christmas!!
It looks awesome man! How did you paint it like that? I really like the look I’m going to add a carry handle to my flat top just to bring back the classic look. Thanks for the tip about the front sight being marked, or not. I guess on mine I’ll have to change that too.
I have a quick tutorial on my Instagram page. Super easy…just spray a base coat, then stripe with colors. I was overwhelmed with how it daunting it was but it was easy. If you email me, I’ll send you the link.
Great video, ar15 is my favourite gun and i hope to get one in the future
greetings from Poland
Hello!!! Thanks for watching and good luck.
Favorite ar 15 , carry handle ,comp's are nice. 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching
A rifle is not a fashion statement, I have both carry handle and flat top. Yes there are different aspects to shooting the different styles specifically precision target shooting on the range. However filed shooting with either is effective.
Rifles are a machine, a tool, I don't paint, I don't give any consideration to looks. Function, accuracy, reliability matter. Build for your needs, short for a truck gun, longer for precision target at range, find a balance for general purpose or SPC.
Thanks for watching
It's useful and maybe nessasary. I mean we still to this day use black powder for hunting food. We do this because it's fun, it maybe all we have.
Right on…thanks for watching
Retro rocks! Meet the test of KISS too.
Also pro tip, if you are tired of spending money on commercial targets. Used cardboard and a sharpie marker will save you money in the long run.
Thanks for watching
I just purchased 2 A1 uppers and 2 A2 uppers, I love the carry handle.
Niiiice…make iron sights great again!
I've said for years that the #1 advancement in small arms technology since the Vietnam War is the red dot sight. If you can have only one modern item on your primary defensive arm then it needs to be that.
Concur! Thanks for watching
A2 upper with a carry handle mount does the same thing as a flattop with a Unity Tactical FAST mount. the carry handle setup is probably heavier, but its probably not by much...
Nice RetroIsh Gun. I have built a few🤠
Thanks for watching
I have carry handles on all my backup/SHTF AR's. They are about the most rock solid irons you can imagine. I have no question you could launch those rifles off a 100 foot tower onto concrete and the sights would hold zero.
Thanks for watching!
This is a comment for the comment gods (algorithm). I'm currently building a "retro middy" on a C7 upper using a Faxon Gunner 14.5" barrel and I think it's going to be in the running for my favorite rifle. Will be a hell of a truck gun.
Sounds like a great rifle!

You are 100 ON target. My RR 16 Carry handle is spot on for my Gas Mask set up.
The carry handle plus rail mount is basically a night vision riser mount for 10% of the cost.
100% correct!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I run a Ta-11 on my carry handle. I love it.
Right on!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
That’s pretty cool. Makes me want to build one now, thanks. Lol
You’re welcome 😏
There's something to be said that these classic guns are lighter and more handier without all that excessive quad rail or even mlok rails. Can just run a C7 style tri rail or something similar up front for accessories like IR Laser, flashlight etc. Modern slings work great on these classic builds. It's amazing how light these older clamshell handguards are and theirs something to be said and taken advantage of because of that especially since rails and such can be attached to them these days.
Ugh I've been telling myself I need to stop building Fun rifles because I don't have space in the safe but now I want one of these!

6 months ago, I took a similar rifle out of the safe, dialed it to 400 and hit steel on the first shot. Dialed it back down to 100 and put it in the safe.
Would I take that rifle to a riot if Antifa were burning down my city? No, I have other rifles for that. But do I train with it to make me a more proficient marksman? 100%

Handy rifles like that are made for your hands, not for mounted stuff. Because of that there are no sharp edges to snag on things or hurt your hands. The a2 is made for hands so you can grab it quickly and move it quickly.
That was actually a charging handle guard that was never changed. You were never allowed to carry your rifle that way in the military
Retro? Seems like I bought my Colt SP1s & SP2s (with A1 uppers) just yesterday. Love the original AR sights. Never was a fan of the A2 sights. 🤠

Personal opinion here, retro rifles work for what 90% of shooters are setting up their rifles like. Red dot, light and sling. Where they fall short is when adding force multipliers i.e. magnified optics, lasers/ir illuminators etc. I’ll be posting a video on exactly this in the next month or so.

Does the rock river arms upper have m4 feed ramps does anyone know? Just curious
This one did not but I have not have any issues
Have a surplus Colt M4 14.5, found out the stock A2 birdcage is almost 1/4 inch too short to make 16" pin and welded, so I got the BCM enhanced A2 to keep the look. This upper had tan moon dust all over the inside of the handguard. The throat of the bore rifling is eroded a good 1/4" but the rest is decent, looking to get a detachable hand guard for it.
Sorry to hear about the hassle. But, glad it worked out.
Nice !!
Thank you! Cheers!
