Matt Hsu's own battle with chronic pain from the age of 16 in his feet, knees, hips, back, shoulders, elbows, forearms, wrists, hands, and head gives him a uniquely thorough understanding of musculoskeletal pain, the ways in which it can undermine an entire life, and the mental and physical hurdles that keep people from getting out of it.
When not filming videos, he's working out in the living room, surfing, learning dance or gymnastics moves, or riding a bike with his son in tow.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO
To do push-ups with proper form, make sure your abs, glutes, and thighs are engaged. Get your head lined up with your spine and look at a spot on the floor somewhere between your hands. Keep your forearms as vertical as you can throughout the pushup, and make sure you stay within a controllable, pain-free range of motion. If you have wrist mobility issues, make sure you improve your mobility so you can do a full push-up safely! As you get more advanced at push-ups, you can work on asymmetrical push-ups, push-ups with rotations, and any other variation you can think of!

I don’t do push ups that way. We were taught to look straight forward in the military. I mean we had inspectors during physical fitness tests failing or passing us. I guess at the end of the day as long as you go all the way down 😂
I use handles as it hurts my wrists when i do them with my hands flat on the floor. I have the back of my hands facing outwards and keep my elbows in as my shoulders are bad.
Thanks for your guide
I’ve reduced from advanced stage two obesity to the upper scale of being overweight. That said, full push ups are still essentially impossible, but I’m up to two 25 sets of half planks daily. I’m getting there!
Yay!
Yayy! Congrats! We are all proud of you
You still got work to do don't stop to look back
Hey, don't you dare stop. Continue, you got this!
The big L? Nah you a big W
I'm 59 and the most unfit I've been. I thought slowly, slowly I would try some push ups to get me going. Thanks from England Mr. Upright.
This is the first time I have a vid on push-up , it is very informative. I intent to use all the pointers you have provided. Thank you Matt
Great stuff! Thanks for posting this! 🙂
Thanks for the info! you explained this better than any of the other videos I'v watched. I'm working on improving pushups before taking a military fitness test.
Im pretty big and have been for most of my life. Making a change in my habits has been hard, but the gradual process has started to take root in my mind for making better decisions when it comes to food choice and activity levels. Im here to impress myself. I want to make myself look like the person I feel like on the inside and doing a proper push-up is just another step on the long road to being a healthier person. Thank you for sharing your technique.
Thanks for the break down! As for me I wanted to know as I'm trying to mix some exercise into my gaming sessions for my health as I really don't get enough activity in a day and hope that I'll also start feeling more energetic overall. Right now my goal is just to do 5-10 every 30 minutes of gaming or after 2 losses in a row and will start doing more at a time as my out of shape butt gets use to them. Also plan to work in some other exercises too as time goes on.
Hello for anyone that want to get a bigger chest, I mean men chest mainly, don't lock out at the top of the pushups. Unless you prefer to target the triceps, those muscle you hold to stabilize at the top, lockout, you build triceps.
So before you lockout at the top, slightly bend at elbow and back down you go, back up and slight bend at the elbow at the top, continue for how many reps. This will build that chest. There other method but we are talking about bodyweight, this is it. Can use gymnastics rings as well, but that is another topic.
helped me a lot, thanks
Thank you brother. Excellent video Very helpful. God bless.
Trying to build strength.
Thanks for your videos
👍👍🎯
Love your smart content
Tysm for the advice I got my strength again
Thank you your video helped me do my pushup goals
This video + filming my sets and inspecting in between each one (as my rest) was super productive. Thank you!
Push ups are such a great repatterning exercise! I really want to synchronize the movement of the chest and back when doing this exercise to create a better balance with any exercise I do. You give such a great description of everything involved in performing the perfect pushup! I'm now feeling much more stable when doing pushups.
Thank you!
Thank you Matt for this tip!
You're welcome!
It is one of the best exercises for the whole body. Add squats and you have hit the most important muscles of your body.
😎..dont forget Jumping Jacks..🙏💞
Pull-ups hit most of what push-ups didn't. Whatever muscles need to relax and expand in one are mostly contracting and doing the work in the other.
Awakening my self
Love form videos!
I am 71 years young and want to be independent
noticed that the way i do a push up doesnt look like how other people do it. found out i do not have the strength to do a proper push up yet, but very happy to be able to correct it and motived to work harder now!
I’m new to your channel, and I’m just starting to develop a routine and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Yes, I’m a beginner, and the wall will be my best friend for the next couple of months. I’ve done a lot of research, but I’m finding varying info for push-ups. I would really like to know the differences of narrow vs tricep vs diamond push-up and normal vs wide-grip push-ups. A video for these push-ups would be greatly appreciated.
I love being strong is why I do push-ups
I'm here out of curiosity and to learn something but I'm pretty happy with my current weight and fit. It was my original natural growing up weight, I was filled out and curvy. I lost it through a bad spot in life not eating enough, overworking, and throwing up because of stress and pressure. Things did get better and I looked good skinny but I still didnt feel healthy, not enough sleep and no appropriate eating routine. So I changed that and now I feel healthy and back to my normal weight. Even so I am curious to see new methods and what not for casual workouts like stretches. I prefer more relaxed exercises which this channel as plenty of.
I need this for our Internship training, ,
My shoulders are on a tension before, Thabk you for your Advice.
I've been rotating between push ups/dumbbell exercises and squats/crunches to keep my cool after every round of Halo and playing Halo to give myself the motivation to work out (though it would probably work for most shooters not including battle royales). I've been doing it for over half a year now and wish I started earlier because I feel great. That said, I've also been doing push ups wrong for over half a year. No more bendy forearms and looking ahead for me.
I am trying to do this to feel better about myself and my health in general.
Thank you Yup I had my elbows out to far instead of closer to my sides but that’s ok at 65 it’s progress not perfection! Thanks to you now I know 😊
Getting ready to ship out to basic for the army. I’ll definitely be doing a lot of push ups and I don’t wanna be that guy that brings everyone down.
I'm going to basic training for the Air Force in a couple of months. So I need to be able to do a lot of push-ups. I felt that I needed to know more on doing push-ups and to make sure that I was doing them right
Iifegoals: I want to be able to do those weird push up flip n get off the floor thingy you do. Right now I'm an out of shape mommy who can barely do 1 push up.
You're an inspiration! I will try
You can do it!
Wow, I've always tried to keep my hands under my shoulders, but I see that yours are all the way down near your waist. No wonder it was so hard and hurt my elbows 😂 Turns out I actually *can* do a push up, and it feels good. Thank you 🙏
I'm just trying to forgive myself for all that time of suicidal thoughts, and the only reasonable way I found to genuinely do that, was to start respecting my body
This guy is definitely giving us too much credit by asking if we are trying to impress our wife
I studied that you told us to get into position like the body is in a single shape. And you put us into action to go up and down vertically. I blew your video's mind because you taught us applied action. You show us a multifacted view so that I practiced push-ups more easily. Thank you for uploading high-qualified exercise video and please let me know interesting athletic video 10824
Ok now you are just showing off!
I’ve been struggling to do push ups for a while. Now that I’m going into the fire academy where pushups are done daily and as punishments, I will try this and see if it helps me with my goal.
0:57 im trying to stay relativly healthy with my indoors lifestyle
I’m getting into calisthenics and want to learn how to do a proper push so I can get proper form and prevent injury!
Wow, you are so flexible
I’ve been doing push-ups the wrong way for years. Watching your video helped me to do them correctly. I can only do eight. when I do it the right way - before I could do 15.
Right, so the boys had just come in from a big day on the golf course and we had a decision to make. Stay in, or go out? Momentum could have swung in either direction, but not if my mate Collin could help it. He got the pump up music going and called for a push up competition - because nothing gets the boys pumped for a session like a good heart pounding competition!
I stepped in to go first and knock out 30 solid chest to floor pushups, not too dissimilar to the form displayed in this video. My mates then proceeded to do whatever they call pushups, which might have well been done on their knees. I called out their poor form, and have now decided to send them this video as proof that they should all have been disqualified.
Thank you.
I’m just bored and have nothing to do until i have the spare money. Would like to look more fit and feel fit. Im not overweight but I am out of shape.
Well, if you must know, I'm here to impress myself. I've always been slightly heavier than I would like, and in the last few months, I've been working to improve that. Granted, I've not fixed my diet yet, but that will take time and effort. Hopefully I can get past it, and become a better me!
How can I enjoy I have correct alignment (elbow over wrist) without a mirror? Can start from the placement of palm on floor laying down on the floor..... How about explaining the distant between the arms ( 4 steps apart)
I'm working on my health and pushups are necessary
trying to do proper push up for my upcoming training
Yay!!! Oh but now I have this other problem when doing squats my (I think it's my?) IT band on my left knee keeps like shifting. I also suffer from knee pain in my left knee right under the knee (hurts more on leg flexion). Uhmmmmmmmmm
thanks, I noticed when tucking my elbows I don't get as much elbow pain and I can feel my chest doing the work.
Can you explain shoulder position? Should they retract and/or extend at any point? Thx!
my reasoning for wanting to learn proper form is because im trying to lose weight and it would certainly help me. (i dont expect anyone to read this but for some reason my brain enjoys using comment sections as a journal)
im still relatively young at 15 years old as of making this comment. im 5'10 and was just under 200 pounds with nothing but fat. i decided in my head that ill never let myself get as bad as 200+ pounds, but i never really did much to lose any weight. all i did was say a prayer in my mind every time i stepped on the scale just hoping that my weight wouldnt go up which was pathetic, really. and i got tired of doing that, tired of how my body looked. i wanted to stop saying that its just 'who i am' and to instead be something more.
i went through one of those stereotypical teen breakups and i decided to improve myself to distract myself and keep me happy (weight loss being one of the improvements.) i figured that going to the gym or buying fancy equipment wasnt worth it especially because im both insecure of my body in public AND i struggled with discipline so i didnt wanna buy a membership or equipment.. i wanted to aim for more calisthenic related things instead.
when i started i could hardly do a single pushup, and even when i did im sure the form was awful. all i used to do were about 10 effortless pushups against my bedframe just to test the waters. i hardly pushed myself at all. over time i practiced and got better and better as it became a more serious thing for me. i decided to do pushups and planks for a few months to build up my strength and endurance for anything else that is to come.
after about a month im able to 15 pushups back to back before stopping. i still have a long way to go but its truly amazing how i went from not being able to handle one pushup, to finding myself easily executing 10 before a single feeling of fatigue or weakness comes by. my little routine is 15 pushups, 45 second plank, 15 more pushups, 15 knee pushups. i do this in the morning, after dinner, and then about 1-2 hours before i get prepared for bed. im no fitness expert so im not sure if this is ideal or if its wrong in some way but for me it works and im definitely improving so thats all that currently matters to me. i have a long road ahead of me 💯
"Don't smash your nose at high velocity" Would've appreciated that advice before I tried my first push-up😂
ty
Matt, why do you use the pad for push-ups on the knees?
I want to learn it due to me being a ice hockey player and quite skinny, i also want to do calisthenics and pushups are important as a start for that 😊
How do you align your hands with your arms upon the proper form?
To answer the question i do this because im tired of a weak body of mine ❤
I have a school assignment in hope that requires us to do pushups on camera and he grades us on form
Is it fine doing improper push up for a while?
I really wanna do push-up but i cant even do single one
So I train knee/inclined push-up and plank in 2 months, and now finally i can atleast do 5 improper pushup lol
I can never lower my body completely to the floor if I do I am not able to bring it back up. I can only lower myself half way. Is that a bad push-up?
My future self.
I fuckec up my wrist, now I need to strenghten everything
I always have my left side of my shoulder/neck that hurts after push ups
I just want to build myself up to achieve my dream body
To pass the fitness portion for police academy in wa
I wanna do like 100 push ups in around 1 minute and 30 sec cuz its the perfect score in army physical fitness test in my country
On January 9th I had a weed anxiety attack and I wasn’t fit. I did push ups to go to sleep since it was 6AM, I did my push ups wrong and I hurt my left shoulder badly
I want to do a proper pushup bec at my football ⚽ practice if you dont do a proper pushup you have to run around the field
I'm trying push ups for school test
I’m trying to do a proper push up because I keep humping the floor
I’m trying to not want to die 😅
For me I want to get stronger in martial arts
Paying attention to proper technique helps. I still can't do many or get down very far but I guess it's a process - like the (INSERT YOUR FAVORITE NAME HERE) Squat - which I'm also working on. BTW - Couldn't help but notice that when you say "Feel right!" you always point at Mr. Bones💀. Is that some kind of subliminal message? 🤣🤣🤣
Yup practice makes perfect, keep at it 👍
I’m trying to figure out what he means by abs on and stuff
Dunno why but this form I can't do, feel like once I go down I feel all the weight pushing down forward, like I'm going to tip forward
Have to do an agility test that requires me to do 10 push ups
In fire academy and want to improve my numbers
am trying to pass a physical
To become a healthy boy
impress no one , just to see if i can be a little better than what was yesterday
Exactly
I wanna do push-ups so I can get a better physical body for football since I'm a defender
I want to be able to do 100 full range push ups
When I do push up my joints kinda clicks a couple times is this normal? Should i be concern about this? Thanks
It's normal
Pretty sure its normal if you dont train that often, if it hurts or something then maybe you wanna get it checked
I just really want to do a push up with the correct form lol
You look tired, Matt… You okay? Thanks for the knowledge, brother.
Video was filmed at dawn 😅 Thanks for checking!
Can you do push ups on a counter? can’t go to the floor
I do vertical push ups against a wall. A counter may be too low and you risk injury if your hands slip!
Here's Upright Health's video on building up your strength toward doing a "real" push up. And he says in this video: yes you can do them on a counter. That's what I do. czcams.com/video/5LjeNKVIK2E/video.html.
Your watch is obscuring the wrist angle :(
Showing my 9 yr old how to do proper push ups.
Just want to getvin shape so at 63can or should I even attempt this
Come on, Gayle M. I'm 75 and still trying these things. But you might want to start with Upright Health's earlier video, "What to Do When You Can't Do Push-ups": czcams.com/video/5LjeNKVIK2E/video.html. Also, Upright Health almost always lists background videos in the Description section below the current video.
My wrists don't bend back. My hands do, at the finger joints, but that's about it. Guess I'll have to find something different to do.
Can you make a fist and use the fist as your contact point with the floor? Then you wouldn't have to bend your wrists but could still do a push up.
I can't get my shoulders back. I try to have them retract so that they don't push forward, but it's way harder than it looks.
I wanna start exercising at a young age
I definitely just know my form isn’t proper because my arms bow out quite far.
I can do 25 pushups but I do t think my for. Is good
Brooo my ass is out 😢😢😢
self improvment is why im doing it I'm fat ugly and only have legs
🤐😎Ha-ha Hey HeY!🙏💞..😁..This must be for 'those who Mastered squatting..😊..lol..👍👍..
Bhhhhhi can do like 5 to 10 pull ups but i can barely do 2 pushups
