Intel's new Core i9-13900K Raptor Lake CPU is being praised by lots of users and media outlets, but have you ever asked yourselves the question, how much has REALLY improved between the 13900K and its predecessor 12900K?
This quick and dirty comparison will shed some light on this matter. Should you really even be thinking about upgrading?

Any benefit at all at 4k?
Great review! It really doesn't make much sense to go from one to the other, but I know that whoever goes for either if going for the best of the best.
Thank you! :)
Thank you for the video, i was thinking about upgrading from the 12900k to the 13900k, but after watching the video, im going to wait until the next gen intel comes out. You saved me money
I'm happy to hear that! :)
might wanna wait till the 15900k cuz the 14900k sucks ass
Question, what happens if you turn off "E" cores on both alderlake and raptor lake then lock clock speeds {both being same frequency}, do they then perform exactly the same? Thanks your video is great!
Iirc they will perform very similarly, within a few percentage points. Pretty sure 13th gen only has minor changes to cache and more e cores and frequency.
i upgraded from an i7-9700k to i9-12900k with rog strix z790-e gaming wifi .... man ...so happy .. was gonna go with 13th gen but 1 too expensive / i would have to upgrade to a bigger case / bigger cooler ..runs Alot hotter than 12th gen that and i got the 12900k for $360.00
did u upgrade the motherboard ?
@@man9b-q889 ya i upgraded to z790-e gaming wifi..its amazing
You just saved me money. Was so hesitant on 13 gen but just a little too much and so much power it pulls.. little scary imo
@@coryo617 I know this comment was a while ago but what power supply do you use for i9-12900k, is 850w fine or 1000w?
@@govols7485 Depending on what gpu u have 850w is plenty . i use Corsair RM1000x with a 4090
I was going to upgrade my 12900k to a 13900k or AMD 7950x system.
But the power draw and temps TURNT ME OFF
Just got a 12900k brand new for 207 bucks. Moving up from an 8700k.
Same king 9600k ->12900k
@KILLERx417YT my 12900k died, got a 12900ks for the same price. Sent the K to intel.
Nice picked up a 12900KS for $240 last week. Goodbye Ryzen tired of all of AMD’s issues after using them for 20+ years.
They used to be great value that the savings could be put into a better GPU but now the CPU’s almost the same price with motherboards actually costing more then Intel.
Let the kool-aid drinking AMD users have their X3D chips, was nothing but a band-aid to begin with due to a poor design.
@South_0f_Heaven_ Exactly, as soon as they get an edge in the market, AMD did exactly what they said they wouldn't do, they became Intel.
@@greebuh what I get a kick out of is how AMD is touted as so efficient with half the TDP of Intel. If that was really the case they should be running no hotter then 50c but in reality if the Ryzens actually drew some real power they would just burn up like all the other AMD processors before them.
People can say what they want about Intel running hot but they don’t know AMD’s long history of overheating products.
On edit:
Forgot to bring up the X3D chips being locked. AMD was always known for unlocked CPU’s and could make a fortune if they offered unlocked X3D CPU’s but that obviously can’t happen because AMD knows that they would incinerate themselves. Not a good sign when AMD themselves have no faith in unlocked X3D’s since they know it’s nothing but a band-aid fix like I mentioned to a fundamental design flaw in their architecture.
This video was great, it went over all the details I had wanted to know! Upgrading because giving my PC away to my GF and I am going from a i9-9900K to i9 12900k, which is great, as I can clearly see in this video, the i9-13900K isnt worth the extra 300€ for sure!
Thank you so much for your kind words!
when you overclock there about the same. the binning on the 13s are a bit better. so the go a few hundred Mhz higher.
I’m in the same position
I replaced my 9900K with a 12900K and an Asus Z690 Tuff (D4) for $420. I run it at 5.1 Ghz all-core (P cores). The V-Core is only at 1.43 volts with a power draw of 221 watts.
@@Gamevet i do hear that the 12900k memory controller is better than 13700k. the 13000's do not have a better binned memory controller by default.
Can you add 13900K with 7600 or 7800 mhz ddr5 memory?? I think it gains another 5% over the 12900
Thanks for the video… hanging onto my 12900k for now ;)
Good choice! :)
Like 25% multicore perf! So good!
Am gaming on 12900KF, TY for the review.
My score for Forza Horizon 5 on extreme @1440p is 128fps, with a low of 114fps. And that's with an RTX 3080Ti FTW3 at stock. The score seems a bit low here, for the 12900K.
Excellent review as always. My biggest problem with the 13th gen is that it consumes so much more power than than the 12th gen and 12th gen already consumes a lot of power. IMO anything above the 13th gen i5, particularly the i5 13400f(but the 13600k is also manageable) consumes too much power for me to consider at any price or performance.
Based on what? 100% CPU usage? On average, Intel CPU performs better in perf/watt.
@@AlfaPro1337 yes, you don't build a PC for 20% usage, you build a PC for a 100%...
And the funny thing is that if they clocked their CPUs at 4.5-4.7Ghz on all core they'd consume 1/3rd of the power instead of 5.4Ghz...
@@badass6300 Wtf are you okay? Most of the time, your CPU is going to be
Not true, even when I'm not on my PC my CPU is taksed with hosting servers and databases and tons of other background tasks.
@@badass6300 Even so, it's your CPU usage 100% in task manager at the maximum PL1 turbo?
Is Intel still doing Tick Tock releases?
I'm curious what the 14th Gen IPC will do.. that should be a Tick right? The 13th was the Tock? It sounds silly but I think you get me..
I have a 10850K at 5.1, So skipping a few generations is fine but keen for the IPC Bump soon because I plan on RTX Gaming with a new gpu this year sometime.
Interesting question!
Hmm... I don't think Intel sticks to their traditional Tick-Tock strategy anymore, but I could be mistaken. ;)
Their tick tock cycle was a new architecture on a new manufacturing node followed by a smaller node generation with the same architecture.
@@mbsfaridi Aaah, yes. That was it.
Thank you! :)
@@Nicolas11x12English
I'd wait for 15th gen (Arrow Lake) because it'll be using 20A/7nm which is a massive jump, but not only that. It also will have increased IPC. I have no idea what clock will it can go. I'm still using 12700K/Z690. You are still using 10th gen, so you definitely should wait for 15th gen since 14th gen is more mobile focused rather than desktop. *EDITED*: I'm mistaken. The Arrow Lake do not uses 18A node. The Lunar Lake will featured this. However, unless Intel changed their roadmap. Otherwise, both Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake will featured 20A/7nm.
so the fact i got my 12900ks chip for 314.00 before black Friday saving 150.00 bucks compared to the 13900ks was a very smart choice because really for gaming its averaging only 10fps faster for 150.00 more in price. good to know i made the right decision.
Many thanks go out to #Georgios over at #quippr for getting a hold on these CPUs for my review. #NotSponsored 🤗🤩
Would you consider these as "noteworthy improvements"? 😅
My 12900k runs very cool 5.2 all core at 1.25v
12900k upgrade straight swap to 13900k worth it guys for £100?
I I just bought an i9 12th gen it’s an upgrade enough from my i7 10th gen and it cost me 315 dollars and it’s upgrade 13th gen would cost me 220 dollars more
So I should go for 12th gen ? In July 2023
you can if you are going under i5 13600k
Thanks for the vid but you can't use a 3090 when testing CPU perf when the 4090 exist. You are easily GPU bottlenecked even at1080p and should therefore test with the best possible GPU to give the most accurate results.
You are right, of course.
Unfortunately, close to everything is purchased out of my own pocket and I haven't been doing so well financially for the past year.
So right now I don't have the budget for a better GPU. It's not that I don't know or don't want to. I simply can't right now.
Thanks for understanding! :)
@@Nicolas11x12English Hey dude. I get it, it's a recession and tough times all around, the point wasn't to "rain on your parade". Rather pointing out a fact that you are heavily GPU-bound so the results can differ quite much more between the 12900k and 13900k when removing a quite significant GPU-bottleneck like the 3090 with a 4090. Best of luck to you in the future bro!
@@FrankAndreasLia Thank you! :)
Coming from i9990k to 13900. Very happy with my upgrade. I did notice my i9-990k did feel more sappy. Odd.
are you using windows in high performance mode?
Is z690 compatible with the i9-13900KS 13th gen
I believe so... I am currently torn between buying an X670E motherboard and 7800X3D CPU and buying a 13900KS (as I currently have a 12900K). I want to get one to upgrade my current PC with and then build another PC that I can sell with my spare parts!
But I really don't know what to do... While the 12900K is great, it seems that the 7800X3D is better for games (which is my primary PC usage purpose) and uses less power. BUT, I could also just snag a 13900KS and a cheaper Z790 motherboard for around the same total price as the upgrade to the AMD parts... I really don't know what to do here....
Nice :)
Thank you! :)
I LOVE YOU!
I don't know how to reply to that... thank you? :D
