  • What is the T-Screw and why is it called T? Although its physical similarity to the letter "T" may be most plausible for some, there may be further explanations or interpretations:
Functionality: Since the screw is usually connected to modifying the chainsaw engine's idle speed or throttle, the "T" could stand for "throttle."
Ease of Identification: When performing maintenance or repairs, users may find it easier to identify and locate this specific screw in the chainsaw by using a simple letter like "T" to help differentiate it from others.
Historical Naming: Given how frequently the term "T-screw" was used in the chainsaw world, it's plausible that it first appeared in early chainsaw designs or instructions.
Industry Jargon: Term usage within specific industries can occasionally be dictated by convention rather than rigorous reasoning. If chainsaw operators or technicians called this screw a "T-screw," then that would become the standard word regardless of where it originated.
Cultural Influence: A particular chainsaw manufacturer or a well-known person in the chainsaw industry who popularised the term may have had an impact on the naming tradition.
Communication Ease: Referring to this part as a "T-screw" makes it succinct and simple to use in discussions, manuals, or educational materials about chainsaw maintenance.
These theories, however hypothetical, demonstrate how a phrase such as "T-screw" could emerge and solidify itself in the vernacular of chainsaw operators and technicians.

Another very informative video. I've always known it as the tick-over screw, as taught during my apprenticeship days in the 70s.

In Norwegian the word for idling is tomgang, probably just a coincidence but still a verry fitting coincidence 🙂

That's such an interesting linguistic coincidence! It's fascinating how languages sometimes align in unexpected ways. "Tomgang" for idling in Norwegian does seem perfectly fitting, doesn't it? It's like the word itself captures the essence of what idling represents - a sort of "empty" or "idle" state where the engine is running without much purpose. These little connections between language and concepts can be quite charming. Thanks for sharing this delightful tidbit, and if you ever come across any more language quirks, I'd love to hear about them!

@@TheRepairSpecialist we also have the related word Tomgangskjøring which is made of the words Tomgang (idling) and Kjøring (driving).. If you translate the two words that "tomgangskjøring" is made up of, you would get Idling-driving, an oxymoron i belive the term is 😃
Tomgangskjøring is when you leave the engine of a motor vehicle idling/running with the transmission disengaged from the engine while you are parked, and it is (at least in Norway) illegal.. as far a I understand this law against tomgangskjøring does not apply to outdoor power equipment.

Question, why did small engine mechanics stop working on small engines? I decided to take my collection of saws, trimmer, and backpack to be tuned and serviced for the season. All of the local shops told me "No we don't work on that" with the variant of tool or brand being the excuse.

Because the minimum cost of the labor is now more than the replacement cost of the item. Many customers don't want to pay 100 dollars for an hour of labor plus parts when you can get a new saw delivered for under $100.
