I was a sophomore in the student section 10 rows behind the basket at this game, I’ll never forget it
I'm a graduate of Pitt and was there at Jim Boeheim's first year coaching at Syracuse. I'm a huge Pitt Football fan but just as big a fan of Cuse basketball. I'm from Scranton, Pennsylvania and I've been a Syracuse basketball fan WAY BEFORE there was a "Gmac." Truthfully, all I wanted in this game, with a huge sellout crowd, was a Syracuse win and a incredibly well played game on BOTH sides. Objectively speaking, at least for Syracuse because I'm sure you can find just as many things on Duke's behalf (I think ;) ) was that I saw numerous times 3 Syracuse defensive players under the glass and the ball would bounce within a foot of the one Duke player under his offensive glass. I'm in my mid 50s and I used to run with the Pitt basketball team during "unofficial" practices so I sort of know my basketball. And I want to say something that is nothing new and that is:
THERE IS A LOT OF LUCK involved in this sport. In ALL of sports. I guess that's just a "DUH" statement and I understand that, but this game may have been won by a much wider margin by Syracuse. Rebuttals are VERY MUCH encouraged thank you.
7 Years Later and this game is still one of the greatest games of all time.
WOW ! Even seeing this again two years later, it still gives me goose bumps. One of the best, most intense and most fun games I ever saw. Neither team gave a inch. It was a knock down drag out battle, from start to finish. Two great programs, and two great coaches. An All Time classic.
Can’t believe it’s been 8 years now…! So fun to watch it still, gave me goosebumps too. That was an incredible season.
Been watching Cuse since the Louie & Bowie era 79' best game they ever played, including all the G'towns and the 03' Kansas game, awesome!

I loved Sulaimon because of his ability to penetrate. When the Duke offense became stagnant, he would take it upon myself to knife through the defense and find the open man. One hell of a game by Sheed.

i'm not a duke fan but yeah no reason to hang head cause they lost game because of the refs. Not saying refs were playing favorites but apart from the no call on the flagrant syracuse got every call.
Lanette Bates When one team looks to get the ball inside all game and the other looks to launch 3's all game.....don't be surprised when the team that goes inside shoots more FT's.
There were a number of calls on Cuse that shouldn't have been called too, and calls in this game that could have gone either way, so that's complete BS on your part. Things tend to even out over the term of a game. This was a great game l, and the kids on both teams played their hearts out. Fans do both teams a disservice and show disrespect to both teams, by trying to say the game was won or lost because of the refs. To me, that's just being blame narrow focused. This game was an All Time classic, and that's the important thing.

CJ Fair was silky smooth in this game. Slashing in the paint and shooting from outside. As Vitale said on the telecast, Fair and Grant were great bookends forCise to have on the wings.
Fellow Cuse alum, here, who loved CJ, but he's an undersized small forward with lack of NBA speed, no long range J and can't go to his right!

This game of 10 years ago now makes me lament on how far the Syracuse Orange basketball program has fallen over this past decade. It was a HUGE mistake for the Orange to abandon the Big East in favor of the ACC.

Duke needed 15 3's to stay close, 3 in a row from Thornton, then a point blank missed lay up by Grant and Cooney of Syracuse, then Christmas missing the second free throw which wopuld've put the game away even if Soulaimon hit that 3 at the buzzer Cuse would've still won

Some of you Duke fans will never shut up about this. SO WHAT. CJ Fair was flagrantly fouled on his way to the basket in the final possession in regulation and they called it a normal foul! SO many calls BOTH WAYS that could've changed the game. Jerami Grant got pummeled with no calls most of the way when driving to the basket. At the end of the day, Duke shot like 40 threes that game and Syracuse shot 4. Yes, 4. That will affect the foul discrepency quite a bit.
That's all fine and dandy, but what you are missing is, if the refs didnt make it a point to take out Parker and Jefferson, while winking at the refs, it probably wouldn't get to that point in the game. Just admit it. It was 5 on 8 that night.
TheColdcustomer Syracuse attacked inside(like usual) and Duke's bigs got in foul trouble, because they were, you know....FOULING a lot. Part of the game. Deal with it.

ESPN didn't try and "fabricate" any. They merely fed off the juice that was naturally there among the fans and the teams. Only time will tell if this goes on to be a great rivalry 5, 10, 20 yeas into the future.

As a Syracuse fan, I am immensely glad that the crowd did not:
1) Do the wave. (Seriously, guys. Lame. It's time to retire that thing.)
2) Storm the court. Yes, I know it was DUKE(!). But we were the #2 team in the country and undefeated. Duke was supposed to lose.

I didn't say I was surprised they didn't. Just glad they didn't, purely based on how much this game was hyped. Like it was the Super Bowl or something. I can't even remember the last time we did storm the court. I highly doubt Syracuse fans will ever storm in future. Elite programs do not court storm. Leave that low-class to the mid-majors.
Boeheim has 946 wins, second behind Coach K. He's in the Hall of Fame. He has a national championship. Even Coach K considers Syracuse to be an elite program and believes the ACC "scored the biggest prize" in conference realignment by getting Syracuse. But what can SU fans do? Haters gonna hate.

I honestly don't see how either team got fucked. Not seeing anything for this game. Yes at the end they complain about a block, but he got the ball first, so I see no issue, but even had there been one there was still the fact he had to hit both free throws and defend for 12 seconds. As far as the other game they had the Charge call I get was a bad call, but same situation, it doesn't mean Duke doesn't score in the remaining time. Also that wasn't really what fucked him, it was the coach getting technical that ended that game.
I wouldn't say obviously fouled. Contact was made on the arm after he hit the ball, but not what I would call an obvious foul. The purpose behind a foul is when the contact effects the shot. Since he hit the ball first, the follow through contact was really irrelevant. Looked like a good no call. Regardless though, the point being they had chances to win after this point. It far from decided the game.
I really did agree to disagree twice now. Like I said, regardless if the calls were right or not, they aren't what decided the game. In the first game Duke had I believe 2 chances to take the lead again. Then in the Syracuse game it was really the 2 Technical fouls that followed the call that ended the game. The calls didn't screw either team.

Parkers 4th and 5th fouls were a joke. Jefferson's 4th and Dawkins 4th are laughable. Those we game changing fouls. Then to not call a foul on the Hood dunk attempt after calling those is ridiculous. Karl Hess is the laughing stock of refs. May or may not have affect the outcome, but is certainly changed the game

Agree jdub7697, Duke was FOULED OUT OF THE GAME literally with ridiculous calls. Hood should have been at the line too. The missed pass at the end of regulation was another chance DUKE had to get the W with their starters on the bench. K sat back, knew that as a GOLDEN TICKET. Duke was the BETTER TEAM and should be 4-0 against Syracuse in the ACC. AT DUKE, clear Charge by FAIR too... that Boeheim RANT was funny at the end, he's a mediocre coach, great against nobodies and at the Dome... too bad ONE and DONE is killing NCAA BB.

As a Duke fan, one thing about Coach K that really pisses me off is that HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN A ZONE OFFENSE. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT AT THIS TIME, BOEHEIM WAS HIS ASSISTANT COACH FOR THE USA TEAM AND NOT KNOW HOW TO GO AGAINST A ZONE LET ALONE DEFEND IT?
