- Sergio Jauregui quit his day job working on elevators to study set design and then began making beautiful miniature dioramas of his LA neighborhood. We meet up with Sergio at this year's DesignerCon to see his miniatures up close and learn how he scratch-builds these detailed models.

Man I love mini buildings made from scatch.
TYGR115 there's just something about them that makes them so cool.
the sarcasm lol
He's good at scatch
So long as it isn’t made of scat.
Rhys Kelch it's not sarcasm I don't think...
The level of detail is so impressive and I love Sergio's obvious joy in bringing these little creations to life.
Who else wants to see Sergio do a one day build with Adam in his shop?
From one miniature maker to another... Beautiful work, thank you.
Paint job and weathering is amazing.
I love his story. He’s crushing it.
Love that TESTED finds new talent and show off their works!!!! Keep up the great things you do!
Great stuff. Makes me a little homesick, even.
Incredible work.
Love it!! Very inspiring!! Great work!!
Beautiful work
absolutely incredible!
Amazing talent, fantastic miniatures!!!
Yes, agreed! It's so important to capture bits of reality around. Amazing art!
His work is amazing!
Very cool. He really nailed the L.A. X-Press box. The windows on those things are always busted out.
these models are really amazing.
Wow. Amazing work. He is really talented.
Yay Sergio!!! Keep up your amazing work!! 😄👌
Reminds me of the artist Joshua Smith Miniatures, great to see that he's inspired so many people like this guy
dude awesome series!
Wow, great work
Great things, wish him all the best
No doubt this guy has found his calling. Very nice work in such a short time, he's quite talented. Should consider model railroading to take it further since it combines so many things into one hobby.
Incredible stuff. I hope he gets lots of work.
Dang, really inspiring video. Great miniatures right there. Hope he get more recognition this point on.
This guy is so talented, only doing this for a few months and his stuff is fantastic. I love the Bob's Burgers one.
Norm is a great interviewer. Very thoughtful.
dude pleasssssseeee can u put his website link on the utube page
www.thatbutsmaller.com/
thanks so much dude
you do realize the guy says his website in the interview...ALSO, and i can't stress this enough....google is your friend
This is great at what he does !
This was great.
Norman has some great questions!! Keep up the great work man!!👍🏼👍🏼
Ooh my favorite thing! Scatch built models
Amazing artist
Those corrugated roofs are sweeeet
This is amazing work, i love it. reminds me of Araki Satoshi
I stumbled on him on instagram one day, Love this guys stuff, it's so cool!
very cool thumbs up!
Really cool.
And for all of you complaining about the prices - Start building ANYTHING with your hands, time it and you'll be amazed at how little money you earn per hour...
I couldn't believe how CHEAP these things are for the level of detail they have!
Would be great to see him in his shop, or perhaps at Adam's. Would love to see his process!
That guy is awesome!
Amazing! You should make scale models for model railroads.
nobnobvideo or a scale model of a model railway.
This is great, and I get that Adam is probably very busy, but I miss the one day builds. The Aaron Douglas visit is why I followed Tested.
Awesome
It blows me away anyone would go be this a thumbs down. Awesome work!!
such awesome pieces. ordered a pin, $12, totally worth it! gonna get a mail box next!
I actually think this guy is UNDERvaluing his art. I can buy literally every piece on his website (22 models) for less than $4k. As they're all 'scratch-built' and hand painted, everything is one of a kind and cannot be mass produced.
Dude I want some stuff like this for D&d
I love miniatures, and I totally got his point of what makes this art so attractive. He really got a good level for the little time he´s been doing them. I find them, though, a lil bit expensive for what they are. On another point, he should start working with scales, it makes everything easier while more challenging, and would increase the amount of potential customers, as they could use them as dioramas, either for figures, cars, military stuff, etc
Here is a link to his website www.thatbutsmaller.com/
threeque Is in the description
It is now. You're welcome!
You should have one long row of the same buildings, but each one is decade themed. So you can see it evolve through the decades.
awsome
I understand you're trying to get rid of the crowd noise but the audio is soooo annoying. Sounds like you guys are underwater.
I don't think they mic-ed Sergio, so they had to boost the audio :-(
Scatch is that little tiny guy that lives in the corner of Adam's workshop and builds stuff from materials that fall on the floor. He's quite the builder, tiny little Scatch
I WANT THEM ALL
cool art, Hes's a Gooner too!
Well that's dope
and smaller
05:35 a guy on the back seems so excited
I want to see light side dark side build off.
What do you do when you have an itch? Scatch it.
For some reason When I Read That I Had. A itch
Why do the interview if your not going to credit the artist. tested dosn't seem to care much about "makers" and more about self promotion. PUT A LINK TO THE ARTISTS WORK IN THE INFO
I would watch this guy build shit in timelapse. This is something I WANT to do.
I lllooovvveee tiny things
I'd love to see this dude imagine up a D&D miniatures map! :-P
those models are beautiful wtf
You've got to be kidding me. Sergio has a job waiting for him in Tokyo at Toho Ltd. Studios. Gozilla!!!!! Gozilla!!!!
good job isolating the audio
I got caught scatching my jawn lol
holy crap! he actually used my graffiti sticker on his mail box lol. nice!

Man, if movies weren't all friggin' cgi today, he'd be a millionaire in no time.
model making isn't an amazingly well payed job. There are many jobs with a far better pay rate. He would, however, probably enjoy his job and get a lot out of it.
He still need learn more. His stuff is basic, some warhammer hobbyist can do better.
Buildings in Blade Runner 2049 were physical models, but doesn't help that it didn't do well, and the most profitable movies have CGI so much they can change locations and actors to avoid spoilers and make more marketable trailers (Thor Ragnarok)
Miniatures are still heavily used in film / TV, especially lower budget projects. Speaking from experience as someone who has created miniatures for film. He should definitely look more into this. Personally, as a VFX artist, i prefer miniatures any day over VFX, even miniatures that don't look too great. I've found that people can accept a miniature shot in film when it doesn't look all too convincing far more than they will accept a VFX shot that doesn't look realistic. I feel this is because while the miniature might not look convincing, it is still real in the end.
I bet he could find work as someone who made sets for claymation projects, or some kind of 'mixed media' animation thing, kind of like how the cartoon The Amazing World of Gumball uses actual photographs as their backgrounds. I wouldn't be surprised if he could get commission work from youtube channels who wanted to do some kind of project like that.
I know he could get a boatload of commission work from dollhouse hobbyists, he'd have to be more exacting in his measurements and scaling, but dude could make bank if he really wanted to.
He should do the Quick stop! He would sell loads.
where i do catch up with all these convention? I love scratch building
I´m the Scatch-man, bee bop bap bo ba bo!
I think he missed a trick by not having them all one scale but this is fucking cool!
This is fucking DOPE
Cool guy
Always inspires me to make more art! X
If he said he had been doing it for 10+ years, I would believe him.
You couldn't post a link to his website ?
should do a build of Adams shop/cave. pos to the same detail of the royal/queens doll house ( it has running water and readable books its cool) or not :)
Typo in the title.
You need to make model for model train buildings your really good at it. I would buy some. The ones you buy are really high price. If you hadn't put a video about making the buildings you need too.
Danica's in the back! @2:28
what is this craft called
What's his website?
This guy is tight
Hi Adam, are you going to visit Jamie's shop someday?
What’s his name? Why didn’t you provide a link?
Where's his website link?
Kevin Wong thatbutsmaller.com
At first it look like the krusty crab until I saw the title
Sergio Jauregui's website: www.thatbutsmaller.com/
What was His Website??? said it so fast...
Arsenal! Coyg!!
While watching I heard The Beatles Ticket to Ride playing in the background
Cann we hurry up and get this UK US trade deal done please.
His girlfriend's dad must be pissed.
so either they didn't give Sergio a mic, or they just had to use the camera mic for some reason
eatmarth you can actually see his mic fall off right at the beginning lol
You guys misspelled "scratch" in the title. You titled it, "Scatch-Built ..."
