  • In this video I show you how I am able to dig less iron nails and get more coins out of the Equinox 800. This was a game changer for me.

Metal Detecting Nut, I've been metal detecting for over 40 years. Your tip on listening to the detector sound as you rotate around the target is worth its weight in gold. For a newbie, if the detector indicates a "good" target as your circle around, DIG IT! If not, FORGET IT! But if you want to really learn the finer points of operating your detector, you should dig all targets. As you gain more experience with your detector, you will learn how to interpret the really faint sounds for those deeper finds.

What I have found in the 2.5 years of using the equinox is that if I notch out any number, I take the chance of missing jewelry. I know this because friends have been right behind me. I have numbers memorized now. I dig plenty of junk, mostly aluminum, but only an occasional chunk of iron, The iron is easy to find, if you are in doubt, hit the horseshoe, iron almost always is a negative number. Aluminum caps almost always jump, not just 1 number like 19-20, but several numbers like 19-23, nowadays is factory presets, except iron bias, recovery speed

thank you so much for the tip... just bought a 800 2 weeks ago and came to you tube to figure out how to use it because yes... I was digging so many nails. With this video I just watched, hopefully not so much going forward. Awesome video, thank you for taking the time to teach us armatures how the pros do it!!! =0)

Good explanation. What you are describing - the "All the way around" idea - is not particular to the Equinox 800 - it applies to every single metal detector that I've ever used. The reason is the field the object is giving off and the way the machine's signal interacts with that field. Try it as an air test or on the surface. If you swing perpendicular to a nail, it will give you a strong tone. Swing parallel (along the length of the nail) and you'll get nothing. The exception to this rule is a bent nail - especially bent in a 90 degree angle - that will generally give you an "all the way around" signal. The other exception with a good target would be a coin standing straight up and down on edge. You would get a stronger signal one way and a weaker signal in the other direction that might fool you into thinking its iron. But as a general rule, what you've said is true - and if I'm trying to cover a lot of ground, or checking out a new site for the first time, I will rarely dig targets that don't sound consistent as you rotate around them. Cheers!

PS - This all applies with no notching as well - no need to do any notching as far as I'm concerned.

I've also found that if you pump the coil over a target it will usually throw negative numbers if it's iron as well. Such a great, but weird machine.

This was really helpful! I swing a 600, and took a tool out of someone else's belt, I will throw it into all metal with the horseshoe if it reads a negative it often ends up being iron as well, or the very least a nail is nestled in there too. The 360 pivot is a great way to really hone in on the target. Thank you!

Hi, I have been hunting the same abandoned fairgrounds for over 30 years. It ran for approximately 50-55 years. Mid 1800's to early 1900's . I have used the updated iron bias program. I have several large buildings that caught fire , so I fight nails upon nails. Are you using the f2 update? I couldn't tell if you had your iron disc. on or off. Also are you using field 1 or 2 ? And what are you using for a sweep recovery speed?
The method you describe does work. 90 -95% of the time. But in heavy concentrations it will miss things. I grabbed a half dime and a seated dime within 15 minutes of each other where when rotated 90° the signal disappeared, I've also used the 6" on the 800, that is an incredible loop.
Also, I have found corroded large cents and IHP will give you a broken signal in a circle sweep .
Great informative video , thanks for posting.
