Oman is a country that you rarely see on the news. This is interesting given that Oman is located in one of the most important geopolitical hotspots: the Strait of Hormuz. One third of the world’s oil travels past the Oman coast. On the other hand, Oman is perhaps the most tolerant country in the region. Despite being an absolute monarchy, apostasy is legal in Oman and around one third of the workforce is female, which is a high number compared to the regional standard.
Diplomacy-wise, Oman has managed to maintain friendly ties with both Iran and Saudi Arabia. They have been friends with Israel, The United States and all the arab nations and they have avoided any kind of significant conflict for decades. All of this was thanks to Sultan Qaboos, who died at the beginning of 2020. So now the question is: what challenges does his successor face? What is going on in Oman today? In this VisualPolitik video, we tell you all about it.

They should definitely improve tourism to boost the economy. A friendly, safe and peaceful country in Middle East with an "authentic" face is a potential jewel for foreigners.
With expensive tourist visa prices hardly on the right track. Salalah could be a gem, loved beaches and nature, but the city is still a let down
It is a sublime country!
Honestly I would love to visit the middle east. Oman could be a perfect introduction to the middle east.
I agree. If they wanted to catch up with their rich neighbors they should start thinking about reforms. To lure foreign investors. Did you know how difficult for a foreign businessman to establish a business in Oman?
If reforms were implemented for sure Oman will surpass its neighbors. Remember, Oman is vast compared to UAE. There are a lot of tourist areas and resources that are available in Oman.
Singapore thought that too but it ended up being just a dream. I think they should focus on manufacturing instead.
I'm an omani and I've been watching visual politik for years. Honestly this is the video I've been waiting for all this time!
Indeed wallah!

I am an Indian who have worked in Oman, apart from other GCC they have a pretty good local population, what surprised me was the people’s love and respect for their King, everyone were crying when he died. They always talk about how their King have taken their country into a developed one. Every companies, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants had his pictures presented. It’s a pretty clean country, good food, good people and as every gulf country I met many Indians out there. They have this O taxi and taxi people are pretty nice. Hope Oman stays good like this ❤️.

100 % truth.
Agree with all Rishad says. An American post-9/11 worker in Abu Dhabi 5 years, I went to Oman regularly and camped in the desert, sometimes alone, just outside the UAE border. That’s something I’m afraid to do in most places in the US. But make no mistake, the safety is partly the result of a well-funded security apparatus in both UAE and Oman.

Real question is how was the food. (And by food I mean did you try every culture, from Zanzibari, to Balushi, To Omani to many more mixes)
Me too. I’m saving money to go back for a visit, this video makes me feel hopeful. I was worried when Sultan Qaboos died with no heir, but continuation on the low-key wise path set by Qaboos, I’m feeling good.
Not a good idea to return cuz after the new Sultan is collapsing the economy really hard to the point of everyone is leaving and work is now a rare find now with a 40% unemployment rate from the 6% and now it's not tourist friendly cuz of the new rules
@@maxwellboop how did you know that? are you a citizen?
Bal Loney living there, and now the places that used to be full of people is now just 7 to 10 people walking and most stores closedown and some company’s left to go to the UAE cuz of the economic problem that happened after the new sultan took place to rule, after just less than a year everything is hell for anybody that isn’t Omani and a 40% are really started to hate him, and may start a protest down the line cuz now they started to add taxes to everything here cuz the government was stealing money and new sultan wants the people to pay for it
I have heard from people from other Arab countries that Oman is like some grandma, always chilling

I am an Indian working in Oman for the last 10 years. This country is undoubtedly the most friendliest and the Omanis are such lovely people. As an expat in Oman, I don't feel any insecurity in this country. However when I travel from Oman to the other middle eastern countries for work or leisure, those countries always make you realize about being an expat. This country will definitely rise and it's neighbours will keep staring at it.
Lots of love to Oman😍

In terms of “good” countries in the Middle East, people usually think UAE
We had a family trip to Oman & UAE last year, Muscat is really nice place, unlike UAE; its like Miami -little to no skyscrapers
@@darkundead boi I love dubai too, city filled with tourist attractions
Apparently some citizens are talking about adding skyscrappers but I believe that the country's beauty and specialty relies in the fact that unlike "advanced" nations who always have the same design we maintain our culture and uqiqneness while also being advanced.
After all if every country has a skyscrapper or hovering buildings, what would make it special anymore
Also how was the trip to the two countries and the food?
Super all the way!
Dude Miami does have high rises, you can call them skyscrapers compared to anything Muscat has.
My mother told me that most people dislike good things and they hate the good guys. I used to be bullied in my school for being half Omani, even though I never knew anything about my country since I was raised in a different one. The bullies made me hate my own country. I got more interested in 7th grade and realized how amazing and kind-hearted our sultan was. It is sad that I got to know about my country near his death. May the future of Oman be bright!

I lived in Qatar to work on projects all around the Arabian peninsula. Oman is the friendliest country of all of them with a culture that feel different. The locals don’t come across in the same way. The only place where a native ‘kaleeji’ (peninsula Arab) held a door open for me!
as a tourist i did prefer visiting oman over uae, uae was too touristy. locals in oman were very friendly
Holydays in Oman were great.

I’m from Oman and I have been watching this channel for years, I was really thrilled when I saw an episode on my country. But one mistake I noticed is that you said the new Sultan is the previous Sultan son (that’s not true but he is from the royal family)
Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq al Said is the cousin of the late Sultan, and he has 3 boys and a daughter if I recall

I worked in Oman for 2 years and had a great time. Great people, good place to work out of. Wretched weather though.
18:00 I would like to state that the current sultan used to be a very active member in community and a humble man who also studied economics.
The problem is that old man got hold of the country at the worst possible timing, Corona Virus just started, Oil Price's down, he also had to deal with all the corrupt ministers who came to be after the late sultan qaboos started getting ill.
All of that coupled with international pressure especially from USA, Isreal, UAE, and SA trying to make oman normalize and the escalating issues in beloved yemen, and the fact that China trying to get their grip on every nation around the globe.
I’m Thai. I live in Oman and I confirm that Oman is amazing place and nice people.💕
One of best Videos I’ve seen talking about the GCC and specifically Oman.
Muscat is seriously underrated, it was one of the best holidays I’ve had when I went in 2017.
Most people know it as the place where Avicii spent his last days before he took his own life.
Yay, I’m Omani and I loved watching this!
Many thanks for an excellent video!
Yes, been to Oman twice and it's fantastic. They are the best Arabs in the gulf.
Just to correct some mistakes in 2:55 it’s called the Arabian Peninsula not the Saudi Peninsula, Second Sultan Haitham bin Tarik isn’t the Son of Sultan Qaboos, he’s his cousin. Bin means “son of”
And finally as an Arab is the 2nd favorite country after UAE. I’d say Oman and Omanis are the friendliest in the region they’re very humble and friendly and tolerant.
i think that a very important part that you kind of left out was the fact that he was able to unite all the different tribes and maintained peace between them, which was incredibly difficult considering how different they were and divided and just finished 2 wars against each other.
Omanis are the most humble and friendliest among the Arabs in the region. I worked in Sohar from 2016 until March this year. It was a nice experience mixing and mingling with the locals, i have never experienced a situation wherein I was looked down upon as an expat except in few isolated cases. It is amazing to see how much progress this country has made under Baba Qaboos and I am sure this progress will continue under Sultan Haitham. I would definitely come back to Oman one day if I get a job but i am still unsure about the NOC rules. I hope they continue in this path of peace, brotherhood and tolerance. 🇮🇳🤝🇴🇲

A country where the man of few words lived the longest 😋
hey i lived there for over a decade just wanted to add:
1. until the arab spring protests spilled over oman was literally ranked in the top 5 safest countries on earth, for years! it's 1 of the most impressive accolades a country can have
2. don't be fooled by things like gdp 1st of all there is 0 tax on anything 2nd if you have a half decent job your employer will pay for everything accommodation bills my dad didnt have a crazy job he just had an mba and worked for a bank. a better statistic to quote would be what % of the gdp is takehome. 3rd the govt takes care of its people seeing a homeless is extremely rare farmers get help also
3. they should focus on tourism instead of high-tech unless it's part of a larger plan for higher education or something, fact is omanis live comfortably the incentive and desire for higher education is low especially due to pro-local policies such as foreigners can't run businesses there without an omani owner. there are so many schools there but when i was there from '95 to '06 i only knew of 1 college there a polytechnic
personal opinions: omanis are both peaceful and friendly, they have a car culture nothing extreme like hagwala but guys like to drive brightly coloured sporty cars usually mustangs and they like to drive fast, it can be boring for kids there, sometimes kids end up driving also, traffic is not common and roads are quite empty at night, it's just a chill country so long as you're not drunk in public nobody will bother you. i miss oman a lot

Beautiful country! We had a wonderful family holiday there. So safe, so friendly, and so interesting. Amazing castles, great natural beauty, wonderful old markets.
I am a Kuwaiti citizen, so I have no allegiance to any side, but, I am really disappointed in how facts are omitted here. This is a tactic Fox and other U.S. conglomerates use for propaganda, hence the level of rampant ignorance that is plaguing the U.S. (I know, I am a U.S. citizen). The British ship was targeted as a retaliatory measure again the seizure of their own vessel. The other comment in this video is about Iran being "antagonistic to the west". What exactly does that mean? This is purely because a Muslim country refuses to bow down to western powers and become subservient to them, which is more than I can say for the Gulf monarchs (disappointing!).
Before I get hate comments for being biased for being Sheia, I am actually Sunni, and I couldn’t care less about religious denominations, especially when it comes to muslims (I believe we are all equal).
The internet is full of westerners telling the world about what is and what isn’t in the middle east, and this needs to stop. This type of disinformation needs to be called out.
I challenge VisualPolitic to respond to this, by either clarifying their position or conceding that they have made a mistake. Some how, I doubt they would, and to think I have been a fan of this channel. This episode changed all that for me.
Having said all that, I am a fan of Oman and its people. I only hope more Gulf countries (my own included), would follow suit.
PS. the clip of the girls giggling at 2:40 min, is the same stock footage used in this episode - czcams.com/video/yotAonIfNtM/video.html. If you would like to report on the region, then go there, meet the locals, and get some original footage.
I agree with you 100% . It is easy to pick up biased information from the net these days without visiting a country or a region and spew inaccuracies to the gullible. The criteria for being a Muslim is singular ( Belief in a singular creator) and in accordance belief in his final messenger Muhammad, sal allahu alaihi wa sallam . There should be no other 'isms dividing
the Ummah. It is noteworthy to state not a single Arab or Muslim majority state supported the letter condemning China's oppression of Muslims whilst the 22 signatories to the letter were: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. That being bad enough, China bullied 37 Countries into singing a letter countering that condemnation. They are: Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Comoros, Congo, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Gabon, Kuwait, Laos, Myanmar, Nigeria, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Togo, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and the State Of Palestine. What a shameful state of affairs.

ive never heard it in the news but i know about oman its very peacful and it is very beuatiful with many camels and nice food

Firstly, the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia has absolutely nothing to do with their religious differences. Secondly, Sunnis and Shias treat each other with respect, and there has never been a time in which they killed each other for religious differences. Thirdly, all Muslims do not desire a central authority for the religion (I honestly have no idea where you got that from.) Fourthly, Saudi Arabia obviously has not burned women for not wearing a niqab.
I live in Canada, never hear a peep about Oman, I know there was something about Zanzibar but that's about it. It sounds like a decent place. I wonder if there are any initiatives there to turn the ever present sunlight into desalination plants? Concentrated solar thermal desalination plants would be sweet, making electricity and drinking/irrigation water from the sea. I would love to see more seaside desert places adopting this kind of system. I want to see this planet become more and more habitable as time rolls along, not less. Greening deserts seems like a good plan to me.
Indeed the largest percentage of portable water in Oman is produced by Desalination plants.. the country is moving slowly towards using Solar energy instead of fossil fuel thus saving a lot of money in the long term.
A huge 400 Million $ renewable energy is near completion that will be used by oil companies in the oil fields.
Story of Oman after Sultan Qaboos sounds excately like Botswana at independence, 3 missionary schools, no varsity & only less than 10km tarred road made during 1946 Queens visit & 2nd poorest country in the world. Even the policies & foreign policy are so alike, pragmatic foreign policy neither left nor right, friends with everyone. Must have compared notes somehow
The sad part is that oman before wasnt that destroyed the whole problem started with the British.
Oman 3 Centuries ago where a strong empire who dominated the indian ocean after kicking out the portuguese, We had the second strongest navy and made diplomatic ties with both brits and french.
Unlike many other countries when empowered oman remained like how it used to be before, Sailing merchants.
Naturally british didnt like a contender so they pulled every under handed tactics.
Some of the thing that dealt hard hits on oman was, 1-Brits funding and starting an uprising against omanis in zanzibar (It was pure genocide against anyone with light skin).
2- Indians used to be a major investors in our expansion so after it fell at the hands of the brits we lost lots of valuable investors.
3- Invention of Metallic Ships changed everything.
and many more but after around 200 years of persistence and the coming of WW1 and the economic crisis oman have got KO'ed (After all a merchant cant sell if everyone around them is broke)
Naturally these were probably the reasons why Sultan Said Bin Taimur was so anti west
