The hidden secret to success seems to be having limited resources and limited strategic value so external actors don't put undue influence on your political systems and economic system.
It's not only external actors, being an underdeveloped country with lots of resources festers domestic corruption, because it's easy for a small group of elites to sell off these resources and use the earnings to pay off their cronies and supress the people.
Having little to no resources forces leaders to help their people to be more productive, which ultimately results in everyone being better off.
Of course, development nations also have an interest in keeping these places underdeveloped and corrupt, because the resources are cheaper to obtain if the state doesn't have any bargaining power.
@@dh510 fair but name a country in sub-saharan Africa with natural resources or in a strategic location that hasn't had significant outside meddling in the post-colonial era. Congos first President was immediately assassinated in a US backed coup, Angola was the site of a heavily Soviet supported proxy war, Somalia flip flopped between Western and Soviet influence both wanting to secure the strategic entry to the Gulf Aden.
Most if not all of the corrupt leaders got into place and were supported by one sphere of influence or the other.
@Art Man Singapore was lucky outside of then cosmopolitan city it started as underdeveloped swampy location with a relatively small centralized population and grew to prominence while China was weak. It's militarily Western aligned and while it's neighbors to the north and south were rocked by communist insurgencies supported by China and brutal anti-communist purges supported by the West, Singapore was luckily able to avoid all that conflict. Had it have been bigger with a large urban rural divide would you have seen similar communist insurgencies it's difficult to know. Also it's independence was bloodless which helps as you don't have a bunch of armed groups vying for power in the early years of sovereignty.

South African big companies moving to Mauritius to escape tax
Not anymore bro. With CFC and transfer pricing, south african companies are in Mauritius for other reasons like educated workforce and better governance.
The problem is that they increased the tax percentage and it's easier to fail in the country. Trust I had to leave also

South Africa has it all to be a big wig in the world now we are been overtaken by other African countries
as an african i love seeing our continent succeeding and be an example of successful africapitalism
An interesting fact about Mauritius is that despite being geographically closer to Africa, it's culturally, racially, religiously and politically much more connected to India!
Its more like a cultural fusion between India, South East Africa and Western Europe, with a touch of Middle Eastern and Chinese influences.
I was noticing it from looking at the video that it looked more South Asian than African but clearly had some African elements among its population.
to be real mauritius say they are there own unique thing
mauritians really don't like being called indian or african
A lot of African Islands were populated originally partially or fully by non-Africans.

My Friends Always Get A Shock When I Tell Them About Africa
How has there never been an episode about Nigeria or the African Continental free trade area? It’s like they haven’t been paying attention to Africa.
That information doesn't fit the "Make your resources fair game for multinational corporations is the best way for economic development" narrative this channel prefers.
lol what? Have you ever watched this channel? They're far more generous to Africa than most would be.
@@sdprz7893 That's damning with faint praise. Most of the time the only images you see about Africa in western media are negative ones. So just because this channel may not be as unfair with their stories about Africa as the mainstream western media is; that doesn't mean that their stories are closer to the reality most Africans face on the continent.
@@gerardrbain1972 Fair enough, however the realities that most Africans face is still a very negative one. Most African nations still have insanely corrupt governments and don't even have basic institutions. Until that changes, Africa will never develop. This channel has talked about all the industrialisation and innovation that is going on in the continent, anymore than that would be painting a fake image.
@@sdprz7893 You mean the false images that pervade the media presently? The very same issues that African countries face are issues in all regions. But the media has made it seem that the majority of the people of black African countries are living in terrible conditions. The Dark Continent troupe has dominated the mindset of most of the world for over 400 years. Now that there are so many Africans on social media. The world can get a different view of black African countries now instead of the one white supremacists have forwarded for generations.
I m huge fan of your chanel. I would like to suggest you to make a video about Cape Verde, a special country in the middle of Atlantic ocean.
All the countries in India's neighborhood are sitting on golden egg with both India and China looking for the dish. I think Bangladesh is the correct example how It is balancing India and China and getting million of dollars❤️

Hi grant, long time no see! How r ya
I wish them well, but jumping an entire national economy based almost solely of foreign money that happens to pass through isn't really a very repeatable strategy... or one that can ever actually last. they'll need a way to actually produce their own wealth
I think it will work because most of the African country are developing or unstable or have bad judiciary now .So for a long time Mauritius can be the financial hub .
@@zombieat Singapore makes quite a lot actually. Hong Kong was used as the gateway to the Chinese economy. And Ireland both does make a decent chunk of stuff, and is itself also criticized for being a financial opportunist.
@@ArawnOfAnnwn nothing wrong with being a financial opportunist unless you hate your country and want it to fail.

@Truth Comes l like Mauritius , i have been four time's in Mauritius ,i am Ethiopian but i think Mauritius should save money instead of investing and make hub business centers for all African and Asian countries ,how ? it needs wise financial expert's from somewhere
Mauritius is an odd mix of Indian culture , colonial influences , and African.
Part of the reason for its success is the adoption of European legal systems which protect property rights which attract people from richer but less reliable protections. You can probably guess those...
The way they interact with each other is , to me at least, surprisingly African.
In the last 25 years or so it has gone from 1950s UK with palm trees to , well, late 20th century and shifting into the 21st.
That includes social attitudes too , not just economic.
Bloody marvelous beaches , especially in the North, great diving!
Diversity is our strength. I know Westerners don't like that word. But for us it works well.
@@22ndCenturyBasterd I'm 'of the West' and am not aware of any negative view on diversity here. For an _African_ country, they sure have a lot of _Indian_ descent though... Hence, does this country's heritage place it closer to the African continent, or is it comfortable being stationed in the Indian Ocean?
it has a sizeable sub-Saharan . They have a special group called Mauritius Creole which is a mixture between Indian and Sub-Saharan African and then u have white Mauritians.
@@shaddythewiz3836 It's 70 percent Indian. So No, you can't call it African by a long shot. Equivalent of Mauritius is Singapore which is "Chinese" country despite being located in Malay area and despite having sizable Malay population.
@@jamfold2956 now it's isn't about singapore being a chinese,indian or malay nation...it's a foreigner's haven
@@ar_l_rvo.o5356 I get your point. The comparison was just for drawing a parallel. My point here is that you can't follow a Mauritius model for African country because of cultural difference and Mauritius can't be called "African" success story either. It's really an Indian success story.
@@jamfold2956 it’s 67% Indian actually but yes the demographic is majorly Indian. But it’s closer to African than anywhere else that’s why it is an African country. Finally a positive take on some African countries.
I recommend Crest 3D white personally...
This island nation is doing well considering it's small size and resources. Other African nations have land borders to defend and complicated histories with colonization. I think this still shows how small nations can develop if they maintain stability and re-invest tourism profits and corporate tax haven profits back into the working class and civil society. Now if only the US would invest in our medical and education systems!
That's not going to happen. You might get South African investment though if it continues on its downward spiral.
Hope Mauritius keep becoming more prosperous

Mauritius can become a developed country because it tends to be separated from mainland Africa, not only separate but further so that Mauritius looks like Oceania countries in the Indian Ocean. the remote location allows for stability from problems like the refugee crisis/communist rebels/terrorists/etc
It's because mauritians are made of 80% Indian origin people, its them who'd developed country
BTW, for anyone wondering, the 3% effective tax rate VisualPolitik talks about in this video is outdated. The 80% exemption is applicable on certain qualifying income such as foreign-sourced dividends and interest and business profit attributable to a Permanent Establishment of the GBC in a foreign country.
