This was a very tribal album 'Roots' in 1996 which was inspired by traditional Brazilian music from Sepultura's home country... it was a record that inspired the late 90's 'nu metal' sound and scene. Unfortunately, it was also the last record to feature frontman/ rhythm guitarist Max Cavalera, who left Sepultura because of a dispute - the band did not want his wife Gloria to manage them past 1996, so he left w/ her and formed his own band Soulfly... They debuted in 1998.
Max Cavalera (vocals/ rhythm guitar) and his younger brother Iggor Cavalera (drums) formed Sepultura in Brazil in the 80's when they were still teenagers (Iggor was 20 in 1990 when Sepultura first toured the US and was still too young to enter the clubs they were playing.
Jairo Guedz (lead guitar) was an original member and Sepultura played what became extreme death and black metal in 1984/ '85... Paulo Xisto (bass) joined and did their live shows... Sepultura signed w/ a Brazilian label and released the EP 'Bestial devastation' in 1985... followed by the album 'Morbid visions' in 1986.
When Sepultura moved cities from Belo Horizonte to Sao Paulo in 1987, Jairo was replaced by Andreas Kisser (lead guitar) and the band released the album 'Schizophrenia'... Sepultura's tapes circulated all over the world and finally got them signed in 1989 to a worldwide record contract w/ metal label Roadrunner Records.
Sepultura worked w/ producer Scott Burns (who would work w/ most of the Florida death metal bands in the 90's) for their 1989 album 'Beneath the remains'... It sold decently and brought Sepultura to tour Europe and N. America for the first time... Burns also produced their 1991 album 'Arise' that charted in the US... Sepultura was hailed as the next big band after Metallica.
With Pantera rising in popularity in 1992, Sepultura decided to incorporate their style of extreme metal into their 1993 album 'Chaos A.D.'... It was a huge success worldwide and eventually sold gold in the US (half million copies)... They had already attained massive popularity in Brazil and Sepultura explored tradition Brazilian music and rhythms on their 1996 album 'Roots'.
After Max Cavalera left Sepultura in 1996, the band enlisted American vocalist Derrick Green in 1998 for their next album 'Against'... but the band's popularity collapsed without Max, who did well initially w/ Soulfly but failed to attain the popularity he had w/ Sepultura.
In 2006, drummer Iggor Cavalera left Sepultura and joined forces w/ his brother Max and formed Cavalera Conspiracy.
Sepultura persevered w/ vocalist Derrick Green and spent decades fighting the stigma that they were not Sepultura without the Cavalera brothers... They still delivered exceptional albums like 'Dante XXI' in 2006... 'Kairos' in 2011... 'Quadra' in 2020.
Some Sepultura classics u can check out - 'Orgasmatron' (Motorhead cover)... 'Slave new world' ... 'Attitude' ... 'Inner self' ... 'Troops of doom'.
Songs by Soulfly (feat. Max Cavalera) - 'Eye for an eye' ... 'Back to the primitive' ... 'Prophecy' ... 'Babylon'... 🤘🤘

Sepultura abriu os caminhos para outras bandas do Brasil!
Esse disco é o que menos gosto da fase Max e Iggor, mas explodiu a cabeça dos gringos.
O New Metal bebeu muito nessa fonte.

Yes! you need to embark on Sepultura's discography, they are extremely important for world metal, I'm proud of them being from my country, Brazil. Please react to Dead Embryonic Cells, Territory, Ratamahatta, Inquisition Symphony, Desperate Cry, Escape To The Void. And absolutely DO NOT IGNORE the albums with Derrick Green on vocals, especially songs like Machine Messiah, Phantom Self, I Am The Enemy, Means To An End, Isolation, Agony Of Defeat and Guardians Of The Earth. "Suffering should be creative, should give birth to something good and lovely" - Chinua Achebe. Sepultura does mean burial in Italian, but the band is from Brazil where it similarly means grave in Portuguese. Romance languages have a lot of similarities.

You have to know the band Korn, Inna. Jonathan Davis, vocalist, brings all the pain, trauma and abuse he suffered in a visceral way in heavy, raw and real lyrics, added to the disconcerting and vibrant riffs of the songs. Korn is an iconic band, precursor of Nu Metal, a phenomenon in the 90s and my favorite musical genre, bringing and touching important and delicious wounds, showing that whoever went through the same thing as Davis will never be alone. "Falling Away From Me", "Freak on a Leash", "Thoughtless", "Blind", "Hater", "Daddy", "Here to Stay" and so many other impactful tracks.

You want to understand Deathmetal growls? Check out the band Bolt Thrower and their 4th album "the 4th Crusade". This is probably the most classic Deathmetal album you can get and if you listen closely you will understand the singers growls.
If you want more Sepultura go check out "Territory", it won an MTV music award.

Word of advice on the whole growl vocals and lyrics. While the lyrics have their importance in the music, it is generally not the basis for metal music unlike other forms of music. Treat the vocals as if its another instrument, knowing the lyrics will come later if you decide to look into it. If the music doesn't catch you, then the lyrics wont matter.
