    Fixed my John Deere 170 - 14 horsepower Kawasaki engine with your help today. Same symptoms, replaced the coil which my local John Deere dealer still had in stock! Thanks for your straight to the point, spot-on video. By the way my 170 is 26 years old and this was one of the very few problems I've ever had with it.

    Thanks for the tip! After taking a closer look, I found that half of my coil was gone due a mouse having the rubber coating and wiring for lunch. I will go the the lawn mower store tomorrow for a replacement.

    Thanks. My LT150 (I recently bought used) with full throttle started sputtering after about 15 minutes. When I lower the RPM and run it at less than full throttle, it ran smoothly. I hadn't thought of the coil. I did remove the gas cap and that didn't improve the sputtering. It has a new fuel filter and non-ethanol gas.

      I have an LT160 that runs for 20 minutes or so then dies. Checked fuel vent and other aspects of fuel system and all looks good. Thinking it is an electrical / heat related issue as the good man suggests. Will dig into this next. Curious if you ever figured your's out. Thanks! and God bless.

    Cleaning the gas cap did it! I had been in contact with my JD service center for a couple of weeks. Although they gave a couple of suggestion, they never mentioned the possibility of the gas cap. I opened the whole in the cap which was plugged and cleaned the rubber insert. The tractor not only started immediately but ran without any problems. Thank you for saving me and my family a lot of time and money. The Lord bless you.

      I had the same problem. Tractor would only run with the gas at full tank. After maybe a quart gone it would stop. I first suspected the fuel impulse pump, which I ordered. Before the pump showed up I had found the plugged vent hole in the cap. Nice solution to a irritating problem.

      having the same issue with my suzuki car (basically a tractor engine in it). Previous owner had deleted the EVAP system and the gas tank was getting a lot of pressure in it. I decided to drill an hole in the gas cap and now the engine bogs down and stalls when it gets warm. Maybe its getting air bubbles in the fuel line? I had replaced the coil and it did not help the issue.

    Mine did the same. Try opening hood and continue to cut grass, then if that helps, motor not getting enough air, running too hot! Mounted a 12 volt fan on the inside of grill of hood,never misses a beat now!

    The first thing I do is put a spark checker inline with the plug. When it starts to shut down, observe the spark. If it sparks all the way to engine shutdown, it's fuel, if it is intermittent, then goes away, it's ignition.

    I have a Toro LX425 and mine runs great for half acre then shuts off . turn key and no turnover at all, lights work, but dead silence when turning key, new battery ,changed solenoid, starter, plug, my question is when they say wont start does that mean its turning over and not starting or does it act like it has no power at all? last thing for me to do is change the coil. starter was needed because it turns over faster now ans then there was no spark. put in new plug started right up . thought problem was fixed then cut whole acre and turned off to put away mower and tried it and nothing?? so Im confused now.

    here is a Note to this issue . Fuel Shut off vrs bad ignition coil. I have found the if its a Fuel shut off that fails after heat from the muffler then fails , then after the engine will start )note if you have to choke the engine that a the bad fuel shut off. with a failing ignition coil . once .replaced if no one has disturbed the fuel it will start up fairly quick. more than once i found a unit that shuts down then starts back up.with having to use the choke when engine is warm , bad fuel shut off.

    I'll try the gas cap!
    The stud that holds the rocker arm assembly to the head worked out and mower (18.5 hp, single cylinder HUSKEE), causing the valves to remain closed- and quit. I tightened that stud and adjusted the valves and it started right up- 15 minutes later, it quit! I was sure it wasn't getting gas, so I bought a carburetor- 15 minutes of running and it quit- This time, I was sure it was a coil, so I bought a new coil and installed it- 15 minutes and it quit! I bought a new fuel filter & air filter- 15 minutes... well, you know.
    Right now, the head is off and I'm installing the new head gasket tomorrow... To think that I've been through all these parts and it might be just a GAS CAP!!!? But at this point, I'll accept anything!
    It just seems strange that it all began with the rocker-arm assembly stud getting loose!
    PS... Pray for me pastor- My prayers don't appear to be getting me anywhere!

    Mine has oil shooting into the carb and I cannot find a video that shows a solution. Any ideas?

    • @resurrectionauto670
      @resurrectionauto670  Před 7 lety

      David. Thanks for the question. There is a tube that connects the crankcase of the engine to the intake. The purpose is to recycle cylinder blow-by gas to improve efficiency and and emissions. Oil can end up in the intake for one of two reasons. 1) The engine has been overfilled with oil and the excess is being forced up through the tube to the intake. 2) The cylinder rings are worn and the crankcase is being compressed by the engine power stroke forcing oil through the tube. The first is obviously an easy fix. The second requires an major engine work.
      Hope that helps some.

      @jetenginethrust863 Před 6 lety

      If your engine has an anti-after fire solenoid/anti-backfire solenoid fuel shut-off valve it could be letting fuel leak into the crankcase when the engine is off causing the crankcase to be full of fuel mixed with the oil & if that's the problem do not run the engine at all it will ruin the engine/have to buy a new engine. With a bad anti-backfire solenoid fuel shut-off valve when you crank the engine with a lot of fuel in the crankcase it will push the diluted oil into the aforementioned tube, into the intake manifold, & then into the carb. There are several videos on CZcams how to check them, bypass them, replace them, modify them ETC. The carb fuel inlet needle, seat & float could cause fuel to leak into the crankcase also. There are videos on CZcams here that repair the needle, seat & float also. Any other questions just ask me, I'm a 53yr old professional A & P Technician/aircraft mechanic. Could be the overhead valves out of adjustment or the retaining screw broke on one of them. Easy to see if you take the valve cover off. Look carefully at the adjusting screw in the top of each one to see if it is loose or broken off. The adjustment is about .005. You can actually adjust these with the engine running to see if it is the intake valve out of adjustment and blowing oil out of the carb..

    You have a stuck auto choke! The spring that is supposed to open it after
    choking is weak and will not open it! If you pull it open with your
    finger, it will run like a new mower, until you choke it again and it
    sticks again!

    • @resurrectionauto670
      @resurrectionauto670  Před 8 lety

      Wow. You've really covered the bases. I imagine that's pretty frustrating! So it has to be either electrical or fuel related. How do you know that it is not starved for fuel?

    • @travisnewton3122
      @travisnewton3122 Před 8 lety

      +Wesley Garner starts up fine and runs just fine for about 20 minutes. maybe I don't have the rockers adjusted right?

    • @resurrectionauto670
      @resurrectionauto670  Před 8 lety +1

      Ok. So here are a couple of things to check. It's a long shot but I am aware that these can cause similar symptoms. 1) Check to ensure the gas cap is venting. If is doesn't then the gas tank will develop a vacuum after about 20 minutes and prevent fuel from reaching the engine. The next time it cuts off, loosen the cap to ensure air can reach the tank and try starting it again. 2)Sometimes a piece of trash will get into the fuel tank. It can settle in the bottom of the tank and act like a stopper. When the mower cuts off the trash is "released" and floats around again. This can be much harder to check but may be the problem. After the mower cuts off you can quickly disassemble the carburetor bowl to see if there is fuel. Obviously the engine is hot and your dealing with gas so extreme care should be taken! It would be nice if you had a fuel cut off switch so you could "freeze" the fuel status until it cooled down. None the less, these may not be the problem but they are worth checking. Make sense?
