This sorta shit happens all the time in the catacombs. There’s only a few tunnels open to the public a lot of them have been sealed off and no ones meant to go into them.. But explorers chisel holes out and crawl through to explore then try to map it out for future explores. But they keep it hush hush.. then they get lost and have to try find a way out or hope another dude comes exploring. Pretty fucked most of the tunnels are tiny, full of water and hard to breath.
I have actually been down in this place and of course I didn't go down in there like that guy did but I went on a tour and at one time we did hear some very strange noises in the tunnel that we were in.
I remember when this footage was found. It was featured on a few shows, like "Mysteries of Haunted Places" or even "A current Affair" or some show like that. It was in the nineties...mid...late? The man wandered the catacombs for days, with an old handy cam. Ppl who have had parties/ raves, homeless who tried to live there say it's alive, the catacombs, and it consumes you, makes you go mad. They start to hear voices, the wind gets to you quickly, catacomb divers say...you begin to hear talking, and every movement is suspect. Drives you mad. Tight spaces, endless mazes down there. The tape was verified several times by local authorities and the man's friends, who warned him not to go down there.
No some other explorers found the camera a long time after. And then they went to search for him after seeing the footage but weren't able to find him.
Well yea but there’s parts that are closed off and illegal to get to. There are a lot of people who go down there for fun and “sport” there’s a “that chapter” about this video where mike explains it a lot more in depth. He actually shows pictures and other videos this guy took before this trip.

Personally, I think the only way that we're going to keep people from getting lost in the Paris catacombs is just give the urban explorers what they want. They want to explore, let them. Allow them to apply for permits to enter the catacombs at their own risk and document them. If they can do that, then we will likely have better maps and find far fewer people lost. And when someone does get lost, we have a better chance of locating them.
It's 2021, if they wanted the whole place mapped it would've already been done. I'm more curious as to why they haven't wanted to map out the whole place.
Call me crazy, but secret bases might be the reason. The entire thing is like a maze, so finding anything in a specific place might be nearly impossible, without clear, detailed instructions. So secret military bases can be hidden very efficiently in there.
I have been in the catacombs before. I had a tour guide and she took me into a room and started talking, she had said that the room we were standing in had collapsed multiple times before. When I tell you I legitimately died for a second, like heart stopped, I mean it 💀
They are digital now, so you hear it thru a phone device and it feels so wrong bc you realize it’s just you and a device telling you the history. I kinda panicked for a min. till I realized they do have ppl down there. They are just focus on keep ppl from wandering to places they shouldn’t. So it’s safe for the most part.
They found the man who dropped the camera and I watched an interview they did with him a few years back, he said he was with a tourist group and he was looking at something, graffiti or he was taking pictures, I'm not exactly sure, but he was engrossed in what he was doing and realised the group had wandered off leaving him behind, he got freaked out and ran after them because he didn't want to get lost ,and in his panic, he dropped the camera he went back and retrieved it after he caught up with the others!
I actually remember quite a bit about this. And some people seem skeptical being someone managed to find the footage. And how he got there if it was unexplored. The thing is people get trapped down there constantly. They get lost and end up deeper and deeper into the tunnels. And many have been stuck down there for days or weeks before being found. That or not at all. There’s a guy that does tours in the searched part of the areas where he remembers his way around. He also told a story about how a girl went to climb one of the ladders to get out and a step broke on her and she fell and broke her leg. I think he said she was trapped down there for a week or two before firemen found her. But it was because she went exploring on her own and leaving her group when she wasn’t supposed too. So it’s very easy to get lost and separated in the tunnels. Which is why majority of it is off limits to the public and most entrances have been blocked to avoid more missing persons and injuries, along with deaths.
I've known about this for a while but it never fails to scare me, the thought of being lost, all alone miles into an underground maze of human bones and stone walls without a map is enough to terrify someone, I can't imagine what it would actually be like
This is the kind of stuff that informs most of my nightmares. Being lost in an enclosed underground space. Seemingly no way out AND surrounded by human remains. No thanks.
In the 1970s my Dad and his best friend went to Turkey on an archeological dig, where exchange for the cost of the trip you would work during the day doing the basic digging etc. work for the dig. On one of their days off they went exploring somewhere. They found a tunnel in the middle of nowhere and decided to go in. It keep getting smaller and smaller until it got to the point where they were on their bellies having some trouble getting their bodies through. They realised that if they or the one on the end, got stuck or something happened like an earthquake or medical emergency that we (their families) would never ever know how or where they disappeared. So they backed out. But every time I imagine, especially being the first one in where there is someone behind me and that if the person couldn't get out and being being trapped behind that person.... panicky....I'm glad they came out.
I've heard of this one! A group of experts/explorers found the camera and try to find the person who lost it, they couldn't find him but they said they think he found the "entrance to hell" and is probably already dead.
"probably" Well this footage is from the year 2000, so you can probably change that to "definitely". But it seems to be a hoax anyway, so it's not like it matters.
@@shelbyb9965 no I did mean probably. As in *their* time, when it all happened. They should just send a team of highly trained explorers down there with some echolocation beacons, it should map out almost all of the rooms. And have them place lighting down there.

Start thinking man. He said noone knows where this is, and that catacombs experts have no idea where this location is. But somehow we have a camera footage. If noone knows where this is how did they get the video???
What I’m confused on is the part where John said that no experts can identify where he is in the catacombs, yet the only possible way that video could’ve been obtained was straight from the tape inside the camera which would’ve been located where he was. Or they could’ve used the location the camera was found plus the footage to backtrack to where the bones were
Having visited them myself I can say you certainly do not have to wriggle through anything, anywhere open to the public you can walk upright. It is well lit and there is a guide.
Yeah, only the parts you have access to. There's miles of tunnels that are restricted to the public that are pitch black and mostly unmapped and/or unknown. Therefore, unless you know your way around mazes like Theseus, it's a death sentence because you'll most likely get lost and probably perish. Makes it even scarier considering you're in a place surrounded by human remains. I bet the tour is pretty sick tho :D
Yes, for the tourist portion it is well lit, etc etc. however, you do realize there’s more to the catacombs than what you saw, right? And this dude being a local most likely didn’t pay a fee and go on the tour- he went in one of the many other entrances that are still there, just not advertised. Paris graffiti artists have explored a lot of those tunnels where they connect with sewers and subway tracks to create art down there. Not so much painting, but sculptures out of the existing rock using power tools. You can find whole sculpture galleries deep in those tunnels that few people have ever seen.
In one place people were in a boat when they came upon a painting hanging in the wall! One of them took the painting even though it was a strange place where they found it! He put it above his fireplace! The next morning 🌄 he discovered to his surprise that the painting was no longer were he put it! He got a boat and went to the same spot and to their surprise found the painting back in the same exact position!
I remember hearing about somebody stumbling upon a while theater with electricity and everything in a room in the catacombs and they told the police. And when the police went there to investigate it everything was gone besides a handwritten note that said "don't try to find us"

The footage is authentic and he got spooked because when he came across the remains he started to panic and couldn't find his way out so he fell into hysteria where he had an anxiety attack due to not finding his way out and ran out of panic. He could've gotten out or died but there was nothing down there in particular that scared him like no creature or anything
For anyone that thinks its staged, remember that the catacombs are extremely hard to navigate, and even difficult for professionals. The likelyhood of someone staging this on the SLIGHTEST chance someone would actually find this is very unlikely.
But you their are tourist entrances to enter the catacombs down a few stairs. Seems like all French people commenting on this are saying it's not scary at all or dangerous, not talking about areas you arent supposed to climb into tho
this reminds me of the movie “as above, so below”. its a found footage film about people venturing into the catacombs to uncover the unsolved deaths and mysteries and is actually scarier and more terrifying than it looks
We went to visit this catacumbs and the reason for the human remains was that the last century París cementeries were full and a Flood brought to the surface the remains, so they decided to mover the remains into the catacombs.

Call me crazy, but secret bases might be the reason. The entire thing is like a maze, so finding anything in a specific place might be nearly impossible, without clear, detailed instructions. So secret military bases can be hidden very efficiently in there.

Or drones, there's a lot of places that can't be accessed due the size or difficulty reaching the whole structure. Drones could map, be traced and recovered by other drones.
