Absolutely loving the combination of oval and road videos
I really like the multiple cameras that you use. Much more interesting than just the cockpit view for the entire race.
1. We got to change that paint scheme it’s known on the oval side as "watch out for that guy". 2. It’s only 20 laps and track is very cool so you can run it as hard as you can really and not worry about the tires. 3. A lot of the people in arca that run the true top split are in the first time slot of the week on Monday. But you did good don’t worry about the #3 both of y’all where just racing
It’s the same as any F1 paint scheme in Formula 4 lol (esp. Red Bull)
Also first time slot on Monday as in when the track changes to a new one!
Good racing. Pocono is very tricky. There’s a bump on the low side of the entry into turn 1. You want to turn in late enough to just miss that. You have turn 2 down - buck up & send it! Turn 3 has 2 grooves and the exit is very wide. You can take the inside line, throttle up early and run wide on the exit to get a run thru the start/finish line.
Try to minimize time completely off the throttle. It’s okay to get off it to turn in, but then get back on the gas 50-80% to get the rear to step out a bit. This will be quite uncomfortable for a road racer, but that’s how you drive to the limit on these ovals.
Yep, you gotta drive off of the right rear to be fast.

I think it's time for some exaggerated practice in turn 1:
- angle in as you usually do, but then turn no further!
- just a few percent on the brake and drag it all the way around 'past' the apex, until your nose is heading to the line, i.e., steer with your brakes
- then feather the gas back in to drift out
- repeat
See how far you can drag the brake, how.much faster you can enter the corner, how much less steering input in and out.

"What I want to try and focus on in this race is coming off the throttle a bit more gradually", he says, before dumping the accelerator pedal from 100% to 0% throttle in 0.1 seconds xD. Dave, I think this is where you can really improve: easy off the throttle, easy back on. Think of it as the Porsche Cup car and how smooth you need to be with that in order to not spin out. This will help keep the car much more balanced and you won't have to fight it as hard. Which in turn will get you better tire management and faster race times.

I'd say your doing really good - I race alot of ovals and the ARCA car at Pocono is hard work. And the guys your racing there have good iratings.

With the 3 you did nothing wrong he was on top he needs to stay there that’s the line he chosen good race Dav you could probably diamond turn one a little more other then that you look good on my end
the key on this track is getting to full throttle soonest possible with keeping as straight wheel. other words getting the car rotated in center and rear steer out to max your straight away top end speed. normally in turn 3 I enter high then point nose to the bottom line aim for a center apex trying to get full throttle soon as a can without losing the rear. but great race you did and the lines looked perfect. its a tricky track to run every turn is different
All in all you are an overall good racer. I love both sides of racing oval and road so I’m glad to see you doing some oval. Got our next Casey Kirwan! Thanks Dave for the great content!
Nice run, Dave. The blocks on the track are good indicators of the proper line, or at least a good visual for developing awareness of your line and the radius of the corner. Utilizing these and the cones on the fence for entry points is all you need for consistency. You seem to be executing and consistent with good throttle control. No criticizing here, you’re doing great, keep it up!

@davecamm if you look at the racing line on the track there are painted white blocks on the track which serve as a good reference point for determining your Arc through the corners.

Love seeing it, Dave driving Ovals. I recently registered on iRacing and was all hot on driving the MX-5 Cup - it turns out I hate turning right, lol. Switched over to Oval almost exclusively and I'm having so much more fun.
You did awesome. Most of the turns are pretty forgiving and you can race hard in those turns. But turn #1 is so scary at Pocono. When no one is around, you can find good grip on a high line in turn 1. But if people are around you they can really push you uncomfortably high or into the wall. Some people struggle on the second turn which is nicknamed the tunnel. A lot of loose back ends, but you nailed that turn all race.
I’d really focus on hitting low line when people are around and running mid to high when in clean air.
Turn 1 you did it a couple of time and you even said you prefer the high line you want to get back on the throttle after the bumps in turn 1 and run the “2nd” lane just over the crease
Turn 2 you was nailing absolutely perfect 👌🏽
Turn 3 is a late apex you kinda want to be hitting where the rubble strip stops and the grass meets the track as you want the best run off that corner keeping the momentum up for the longest straight

you did great in this one Dave. Pocono is a TOUGH PLACE.. the best advice is just try to get through it in one piece and hope next week has an easier track. i am definately not a fan of pocono. the best i was able to get here this week was a p12.. and it was struggle the whole way. but good run bud. good job handling that 7 and 3 car. neither were your fault. the 3 kinda pinched you down in the corner and being a naturally tight car you cant just turn when someone thinks you should.
The Tricky Triangle!! Not sure if you're aware, turn one is modeled after Trenton Speedway, turn two after Indianapolis Motor Speedway and turn three is modeled after the Milwaukee Mile. Great race!!

congrats! this is one of my favourite tracks, and especially T2. a lot can be won here and I really like to pass between T2 and T3.
funny thing: if you watch carefully the wall at the exis of T3, there is a wrinting "What Turn 4?" :)

My local track, Ole Pocono. Not sure what the 7 was doing or the complaint from the 3, tough track but very clean run!
I was practicing this track yesterday. The oval guys were all saying the tire lasted too long around this track. Probably why you had that sudden surprise grip there at the end.
Pocono is known as the "Tricky Triangle" and comically has "What turn 4?" painted on the wall at the exit of turn 3. All of your speed and momentum for the lap at Pocono comes out of turn 1. I like to brake early, so I can get back on the gas early to carry that speed around the rest of the track. The front stretch is the longest in all of the oval racing circuit, so you would think the speed would need to come off of turn 3. However, turn 3 is long and sweeping. So, as long as you aren't fighting oversteer or scraping the wall to lose time, then you will be able to carry speed through turn 3 no problem. Your line in turn 1 was good. I like to put the center of my car over those concrete square patches. You just were getting into the corner too fast. This hurts your tires, and you can't get back into the gas as quick, which is hurting your lap time. Plus tell that 3 car that rubbing is racing.

More importantly, the desire to try something new and the will to succeed at it are admirable. Thanks for keeping us old fellas inspired and proving that skill travels. :) Watching you drive oval takes me back to watching NASCAR in the 80s with my Dad when Dale Earnhardt, Bill Elliott et al were in their heyday (and I agree with the other commenter - the Gordon paint likely needs to go lol). nice video mate.... there are some basic rules for oval racing... brake more than you think you have to to safe yore right front. watch at the tire wear...and set bb that the car is turning better with less steering.... be smooth on exit with the throttle ...and dont over race the car =)
I reckon these cars would be easier to handle in real life, apart from the Gs on the body that is. It's like being on a tightrope balanced on a knife edge haha, great skill 👍
You should really try gen4. Same car, longer race, way way more horsepower, aka can be a hand full, but massive fun.

As for the #3, he might have thought you were going to drive the extreme inside right on the paint. He should know even in real life, while racing, you can't make that assumption. And I wouldn't call it a dive bomb. You were to his inside rear quarter down the whole straight. Some guys just expect others to pull over and stop to let them by. Good race. Don't let someone else's attitude get your dander up. And the #7 Tide car, he just missed his brake point, had to get on them harder than the car behind expected. His problem, not yours.

I did two races yesterday. This one and a TCR race. Today not one race. I tend to do one race then spend the day editing etc. So not as much as you'd think 😁

I haven't ran there yet this week, but I'm not sure the ARCA car has enough rpm range to shift at new Pocono, only corner it might be possible is turn 1. For the most part though the track has so much grip I don't think it's needed.

You and the #3 car both got into each other a little. You came up a little more than you should have, he came down a little more than he should have. Nobody’s fault….just a little rubbing.
Turn 2 is the Tunnel turn. There is a Tunnel under it that you will drive through when you drive you RV to the track. Pocano is a Oval that drives like a high-speed road course since each turn is different. A crew chief will set the car up for the tunnel turn.
The incident with the #3 car, would be looked at by anyone as "a racing incident". Honestly, I would give you maybe 30% of the blame, and the other 70 to him. He needed to remember that you were there along side and not take such an arc to get back to the racing line. At the same time, your car did push a little up in the turn.. I can also see from his perspective why he was a little upset from the view on his car. It looks like a "divebomb" move from you. Tho to be fair, as you well know from the road side, some people believe that no matter what happens the fault is always someone else's. That could be car 3's view, but he also might not have realized how much he "left the door open" on the inside for someone to go in. Also some think that if you even breath on their car that it's an attempt to intentionally wreck them, but they can just destroy another car, and "It's just a racing incident". Or he thought that he left more room open, and it was just someone not being able to control their car.. I hope that when he goes back and looks at the replay he realizes that it was just incidental contact.
For the incident with the Tide car at the start. It looked like he was just overshooting the corner on entry, and just missed his braking spot. Remember some of the people in the ARCA series are true D class drivers who don't understand what brakes are. There is an expression called "ARCA Brakes" that means someone didn't even attempt to use the brakes. Sometimes even in the C, B, and A classes you have some people who don't slow down for wrecks until they get into them.

I don't quite agree with your assesment of the incident with the 3 car. You placed all the blame on him for turning down on you. I tend to disagree because you entered the corner very shallow below the bottom seam. As you get to the center of the corner, you wash up above that bottom seam and you both meet in the middle. I would place the blame mostly on you for entering the corner so shallow while the 3 car was taking the traditional arch into the corner. Thats just my opinion.
I standby what I said. We touched paint and kept racing. I don't think it's a big deal at all. 👍

24:23 - Nah, mate. You drove in too hard and you slide a full lane up the track. You're in his lane more than he's in yours. He's holding the appropriately line. You should be a lane lower along the yellow line if you're passing low. He's right.
But he can't take the normal line if I'm there...
@davecamm he wasn't taking the "normal" line. He was one and a half to two lanes up the track, which is the "high line". He gave you room to take the "low line", but you drove in a little too hard and slid up in to the high line and hit him. After you touch, you got back in the low line. Just looks at the asphalt seams for reference. The seams are about a lane and a half apart. Your right side tires should be totally below the seam, but you had your left side tires on the seam.
You did really good keeping the high line with the 7 car coming off turn one. He was put in an awkward position. It looked to me like he thought he was gunna clear you so he moved up some to give the black car on the bottom room. Then you got a nice run coming off the turn and claimed that spot of the track so he came up in to you. Really I think the black car was a bit too aggressive trying to go 3 wide, but he did good keeping the low line. The 7 car totally botched his braking going in to the tunnel turn though so that one was mostly his fault.
