In a weirdly round about way the desert in Breath of Fire III was a big part of why I became obsessed the game and ending up loving it.
As a kid I watched my older brother play a lot of great games that we rented, including this one. That first play through of his will always be one of my good memories, however he got stuck at the desert and dropped the game there. It wasn't until some years later that I bought the game and had my brother warn me that I'd most likely get stuck in that infamous desert, so the feeling of triumph was pretty huge when I finally got there and got through it, followed by that great feeling of having no idea what's going to happen next.

I still remember the very first time I played FF7, I completely missed the whole Wutai area until I was exploring the world and tracking down endgame equipment and whatnot. I was on Disc 3, basically ready for the final showdown and I stumbled into Wutai... I was so far beyond the point that the game intended for you to go there that even with no materia it was basically a joke.

The end of Dragon Quest II is indeed brutal. Not only cave of rhone with all the pitfalls you can fall through, but then the area after that the random battles are insane. You gotta do tons of leveling to make sure you are ready for the final dungeon and even after gaining many levels some of the random battles in the final areas can be a nightmare. The enemies are crazy in the final area of DQ2.

Wooden Sword Hollow Bastion from Kingdom Hearts 1. Riku steals your Keyblade, Donald and Goofy abandon Sora to follow him under Mickey's instructions, and you have to rely on the Beast to do the fighting. Sure you can use magic to try and manage, but me being a fighter/swordsman, I HATE having the Wooden Sword, because your combos can barely make a dent even against the Shadow Heartless, the weakest ones in the game.

Another great video, David. I'd be interested in seeing if you could make a video about the opposite concept: games that you hate but have one part that you like or maybe even love. A part of a bad game that shows one shred of goodness and quality that if only the developers could have made the entire game as good as that one part.

Some that come to mind for me:
    - The massive difficulty spike at around the start of disc 2 of Star Ocean: Til the End of Time when the robot enemies show up
    - Cathedral Ship in Xenosaga: Episode 1
    - The first half of Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light (the game keeps splitting your team up into parties of 1 or 2, and its cute for a while but it wears out its welcome)
    - The fishing contest in Moon: Remix RPG Adventure (thankfully, this is optional if you're not going for the ultimate ending)

I think the most painful part about various Victory Roads is that they're all caves, which means lots of Rock types which often have Sturdy. It makes every single battle take twice as long when you can't just oneshot every wild encounter. (I know, I know, Repels are a thing, but I shouldn't -need- them.)
Later gens made that a little less annoying, at least.

  • @JhakceMorgan
    @JhakceMorgan Před rokem +1

Oof. That desert in BoF! As a kid, I must have spent a week or more trying to cross it using the bad directions before I rage quit. This was before smartphones and CZcams Let’s Plays, and GameFAQs had contradictory info. I’d be curious to find an emulator of it (or a remaster for current gen) to see if it’s better now that so much time has passed, and in the case of emulation or remaster, one would hope the translation / directions would be better.
One part of another game that frustrated me was the fighting tournament in Arc the Lad II. I wasn’t prepared, and I could never get through it, which was upsetting, given how much time I put into it.
Also, in Final Fantasy VII Remake, most of Chapter 9, where Cloud and Aerith have to fight their way through the underground, and you have to use the robotic arms to move crates to progress, is just a slog and completely interrupts the flow of gameplay. This is especially egregious for trophy hunters, as you have to play through it at least 3 times and make different choices prior in order to trigger different trophy-related events.

The Victory Road from the Unova region isn't that bad, it has good music and it's a bit lenient on the HM department and puzzle solving. But I agree the Victory Roads from the first four generations are a bit annoying to cross, especially Hoenn and Sinnoh's, because of the HM requirements.

There are hacks that remove or circumvent HM requirements, such as Crystal Clear which apparently removes the obstacles entirely, Emerald Final which makes HMs replaceable so you only learn them for the few moments you need them before relearning the moves you actually want again, and Ruby++ which replaces HMs with items.

Honestly, I think you've already gone over all the really pain/annoying areas I remember. But for the sake of the algorithm, I'll write them again! In no particular order.
Some of these aren't even lengthy segments but...just manage to be annoying anyway.
    1. FF6 - Zozo. I really just don't like the vibe. It's creepy. Not a place I'd visit often in the real world.
    2. Legend of Legaia - Snowdrift Caves
    3. CAVES!! In general, I'm just not a cave gorl. But if it's packed with treasure, well, we can make that work. Or if there's a healing fountain it's GRIND TIME.
    4. LoZ: Ocarina of Time - Water temple, obviously. Feels good to beat it though, it's just a thank God it's over feeling...
    5. FF9 - Burmecia. Like #2, this is one of my favorite character's back story. I'm just glad Freya got out of there in one piece. I don't know what it is--I mean, fallen cities/dungeons and places like that are usually littered with corpses and it's not always so sad. But in this case, yeah, it's pretty sad.
    6. Breath of Fire II - Oh, gosh. SImaFort. The worse thing about this, for me, is that the reward for all of this...Jean. He's not my favorite frog. Frog from Chrono Trigger, great, beautiful, amazing, unique, totally 100% authentic...Jean from BoF2?? MEEEH
    7. Chrono Trigger - the first part of 2300 AD
    8. LoZ: Link To The Past - ARGH- Death Mountain. Pretty much any mountain with giant boulders that fly from the sky and hit you on the head.
    9. LoZ: Breath of the Wild -- Maybe this is controversial. But when you go on the divine beast in the bird city, and you have to shoot the target and then you have to fly around shooting things...I mean it's kind of fun the first time but a bit annoying after.
    10. FF4 - Curing Rosa's sickness. Gorl, GET UP. I've already saved you multiple times on the first playthrough and now here you are...being sick...again.

Regarding your number 1 pick, the directions for the desert are not wrong. The Desert of Death is very tame in the English releases of BoFIII compared to the French and German versions. Not only are the latter two slower due to the 50Hz framerate VS NTSC's 60 (something that the Australian and UK English version also suffer from), but the directions are always wrong (both the ones in the notebook AND those given by Horis). I guess one member of the localisation company noticed the discrepancy in the English version (the French version is very obviously translated from English not Japanese) and decided to play heads or tails as to whether to head east or west was the right one and picked wrong.
I never understood the Golden Plains hate though. The directions given are clear and accurate on all versions, the field is pretty small, so traversable rapidly and you don't visit it often...

  • @johnhanzelyjr
    @johnhanzelyjr Před rokem

Regarding Legaia 2...Yes. Maya is Mute at the beginning. She IS the primary (and pretty much only) Healer through magic, though. She has a backstory that explains it. At the end of the first crawl through the sewers, and she gets to have attacks, she IS pretty much the most powerfull character. Her skills are all elemental, and don't follow the "High, Low" stuff that can cause other character's attacks to completely miss. Hit enemies with their weaknesses, and she does more damage than Lang.
I do get that historically, sewer levels and dungeons can be complicated puzzle-wise (I know this one is, especially if you want every chest), but not having Maya able to attack when you get her.....is actually fine. As I said....she's a powerhouse once she has access to her attacks due to exploiting elemental weaknesses, and not having to worry about some attacks missing flying enemies....or enemies who are extremely low in stature. Those damn slimes are so small, that 1/2 to 2/3 of the other character's swings will just fly overhead.
Also, I know Legaia 2 is not everybody's cup of tea. Legaia 2 is not like Legend of Legaia....but I think it's still a nice game (barely any magic for starters....and uber expensive to cast to boot). I do appreciate that you have arts that actually REFILL your AP...unlike the first game. I've had to do strings of non-art attacks just to build up AP in the first game. Good luck getting all the Heaven's Secrets to get all the Ultimate Weapons and Armor, though.

I figured out in subsequent play throughs that if you have more than 50 materia (I think the upper limit was 48?) then she won’t be able to take it all, leaving you maybe not totally a fish out of water. Though it’s still random which pieces she takes. And it’s still bullshit. 😂

RE:7th Saga: I usually get up to Level 80 before going to the past, so for me I end up just enjoying the epic beatdowns where I just beat the everliving crap out of everything, including Gorsia himself.
RE: Lufia: There's an interesting skip in Lufia with that Food quest. I forget how exactly you trigger it, but you can actually skip half of the food side-quest and IIRC, not even go to Herat at all. As for getting the Alumina, I just stock up on loads of Plum Cider and by the time I get all 6, my levels are pumped and I'm just wading through the mosh pit of monster corpses. I find it fun, to be honest, but I guess I'm just weird like that.
BoF4: The grasslands are a golden opportunity to get you a LOT of levelups for Ryu to make the game a bit smoother. Simply go to the Temple with Ryu, and make sure he has Burn. Go there, burn some nut troops and watch the XP roll in, because XP in that game is split amongst party members. Get him a good trainer and watch him get ludicrously powerful. I'll agree about the BoF3 desert part. That is kinda icky with very few goodsides to it.
FF7: I remember not liking this area much either. But hey, this is a really good grinding spot. The island itself, especially the beaches, is great to grind at once you complete the materia quest. I usually get everybody's penultimate Limit Breaks there. Simply go to that cave between Midgar and Ft. Condor to unlock the 2nd limit break of any tier (because you find lots of groups of mobs there to kill with any Elemental-All combo) and then go to Wutai Island with the Fury Status on everybody and fight those large groups of birds that keep doing fairly weak AoE attacks that fill your limit gauge fast to unlock the first limit of the next tier pretty quickly. A couple hours later and you'll have lots of levelups and all the limits (except for the final one) unlocked on everybody. So while Wutai Island's quest is a bad experience, the fact it's such a ridiculously awesome Penninsula Of Power Leveling helps when trying to view it in a positive light. That's one heck of an awesome reward for doing Yuffie's quest early. Being level 40-50 with all but final limits unlocked on Disc 1? Frick yes. lol

Some I can think for me:
    - The final third of the game in Dark Souls. The Duke's Archive is alright, but then there's the Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith sections with their clearly rushed level design, as well as a cabalcade of the very worst bosses the game has to offer. Then there's the Tomb of Giants which is my least favorite area in the game and absolutely not fun to play. Yeah, I never look forward to the final sections of Dark Souls.
    - I actually don't remember the exact details, but I seem to recall there being this really tedious fetch quest towards the end of Terranigma that had you running back and forth talking to NPCs across the map, and me thinking it was a waste of time when I played it.
    - Chapter 4 in Paper Mario: The Thousand Years Door. You already mentioned the whole General White fiasco, but this one was also a pain in the ass, making you go through those woods with really hard to avoid enemies like what, 5 or 6 times?
    - A Realm Reborn, the base game of FF14. The game eventually goes on to become one of my favorite JRPGs ever, but this only starts to happen once you get to the expansions. The base game is not bad to go through once, but definitely not something I look forward to playing again. The story is kinda basic, the bosses and dungeons weren't that interesting yet, the OST was fine but not to the levels of what comes after, the voice acting was... questionable... Everything becomes better once Heavensward starts.
    - Mt. Itoi in Mother 1. Even the designers admitted they went overboard with it.
    - I'm also tempted to mention Etrian Odyssey's Claret Hollows. But that's the post-game dungeon, and, to be honest, I don't dread it because I... just plainly refuse to go through it again. Already completed it once, there's no reason to subject myself to it again. Instead, I could also mention the third strata of Etrian Odyssey 4, whose puzzle I found to be kinda tedious.
    - Lost Odyssey. The part where you have to watch the two kids singing. Ugh... XD

The first Breath of Fire KINDA has big open areas, if you count the Tower of Spyre, but that might be stretching it. I will defend 3's desert and 4's plains, but not in the, "This is so good; more, please!" way so much as the, "This has some merit," way. This might be personal bias, because I love the idea of getting lost in a blank, open area like this (though I prefer a dark underwater backdrop), but I do think it was a neat idea to switch up the perspective and challenge a different set of navigational skills. I did also think it was neat to hide some pretty legendary equipment in something as vast and hopeless as 3's desert. That said, finding all that is fun ONCE; having to trek back and forth half a dozen times through such a long sequence was an absolute slog, and if someone tells me they hate it, they'll get no resistance from me.

(((Let me preface this by saying that I mean this all as a tongue-in-cheek snark off. I stand by what I say here, but mean no disrespect to anyone who disagrees. We all here in good fun, yes?)))
I disagree with your take on Tales of Vesperia. I never used Estelle as a healer because her AI is so brain dead (OG Xbox 360 version). "One and only healer " my butt! She loved getting into melee range to attack (even when I told her to focus on healing and to stay away from things), and when it was time to heal, she'd immediately get smacked and interrupted, then just try again and get smacked again. Party wipe. Reload... On the other hand, Karol and Raven were extremely competent. Karol is even tankier than Estelle, and his healing abilities are quick ground smashes. He's melee ranged, but in the heavier boss fights, that just means he's right next to the front liners who are most often taking the hits anyway, so he's right where he needs to be. The champ was so effective that often times, he'd heal a status effect before I could even register that I was afflicted. And Raven had the advantage of being ranged and quick to use his healing art. Yeah, Karol had to get close to whoever needs healing, but Raven can just fire off a homing arrow that targets more people as he levels it up. Spam it as need be, then get right back to plonking things with arrows.
I don't hate Estelle as a character, but as a party member, she's not a good healer unless someone is actually controlling her. At least with Karol and Raven, once the healing is done, they return to fighting, which they are actually good at. Estelle isn't so great in that department. She's a decent mage, but again, that requires her to be at range, and she loves to get into melee combat. The only advantage Estelle has is stat buffs and resurrection, and the latter isn't needed as much if you have a good healer who prevents you from dying in the first place because they actually get the heals off at the correct time.

Off the top of my head I'd say all of Dezos in Phantasy Star 2. The whole game has dungeons that are just complete nonsense mazes.
The first overworld is fine enough but when you get to Dezos the second overworld it's frustrating to navigate because you go back to this place alot in the mid n end game, it literally feels like one big late game dungeon itself and if you want to go to another town to get exclusive equipment you have to make you can navigate to the right town and that your protagonist has his translator on.

FFVI is my favorite RPG ever, but I'm surprised it hasn't made any of these lists. To me, when the party gets split into three is a bit of a drag partly due to the imbalance in length, with one being significantly longer.
(edit--I didn't get a chance to complete my thoughts because I was on my way to work)
It's not so much than any of the missions are bad, but Saban's scenario introduces two characters that need grinding to be effective, and none of the three have magic at this point in the game (if I remember right). In fact, if you want Gau to be worth anything between this point and getting full control of the airship, you have to grind now using leap whenever possible, and without gaining experience, to gain Gau's best abilities. Let's be honest, Saban's scenario should have ended after the ghost train and the Veldt should have been an optional side quest for after getting the airship.
Alternatively, they could have added more to the other two scenarios--more Locke and Celes scenes have been welcome, since they don't really interact much between their scenario and the opera scene (I know it wouldn't make sense for them to end up in the veldt, but imagine if it was them jumping off the waterfall, with one having to convince the other to trust them).

Enemies can turn you into frog and give all sorts of annoying status effects, the map is trippy and for the first time incredibly hard to navigate with no guide. Then the mini-games with boulders being tossed at you or the multiple paths to catch buddy with the key. The only saving grace is the bosses were pretty easy at least to me. OH and after you finish this you lose Aerith for the rest of the game. God I hate the temple of Ancients.
Also while I agree it's pretty annoying losing Estelle for such a long peroid and her being the only real main healer I personally found the desert portion of Vesperia to be much more insufferable.
Star Ocean 4 the part where you leave the 2nd planet and the next part of the game your stuck on a giant hostile ship with no towns or 'safe' points. I hated that mothership segment and the next part where you go to earth in a sci-fi was super annoying. Literally the last location in a Sci-fi I want to visit. For Star Ocean 3 the Shrine of Kaddan was absolutely horrid both times you go there for the story, the enemies are just so annoying and I simply didn't enjoy my time there.. I also hated the Kirlsa mines where you gotta ride a cart mini-game it wasn't super annoying it just wasn't fun.
Trail of Cold Steel 1/2 : that giant nomad plain. I hated that place so much. Storyline aside, that was fine but it was just such a giant area that by the time I finished that area I'd always have a good 1-3 hours of added gameplay just from the damn travel time.
