  • I'm still shopping for a Linux version and came across Zorin OS 17.1 what looked very interesting. So I installed it on my 12 year old laptop in order to give it a try.

You should give Garuda OS a go.
It's a gaming distro but the gaming distros are masterful with compatibility and functionality.
It also allows for installing Windows programs if needed.
Optimus works, Nvidia works. Very good distro.

Garuda (KDE lite, cuz the normal one looks like sh*te) is installed on my Laptop too, it is the only distro I never had compatibility issues with on none of my systems. Zorin is based on Gnome and is therefor in no way suited for older laptops, though Zorin has a lite version available that probably would have run better for you. Just make sure that you install Discovery or Pamac as a software manager via the Welcome wizzard right after installation, if not you might run into problems finding out how to install software
