Roy is a Nor Cal. guy. Grammy winner. Works without a net; improvise within the structure. Blues historian. Met him at his garage sale.! I'm a collector, and always ask if they are selling musical instruments. The little girl said no, but said her dad played music, as he looked up from underneath his hat. It was Roy. One of the great slide players. He is out there touring. Always a treat to see one of the greats.

I've been listening to this Roy for a long time, he used to play a lot on a double billing with Norton Buffalo, great musician. As a side note I always thought his style of dress was a bit 1930's style, sort of a musical Eliot Ness look LOL

Nice shirt. I became aware of Roy Rogers in the 80's. One of the best. For many years my favourite acoustic slide song was Johnny Winter's "Dallas" from his 1969 eponymous album. For his electric slide playing one of the best performances I saw was his "Highway 61 Revisited" from Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Gardens(1992). I only found the audio of it on CZcams, then I Googled it and found it on Daily Motion. I'm not sure when his addiction to painkillers and other habits started effecting his playing, but in later videos (eg. Crossroads Festival) it was just sad to see. Another slide player I liked from the 70's is Stefan Grossman. Most of his CZcams clips are either instructional or don't involve the slide.

A couple of other points about Mr. Rogers. You might check out some of his work with Norton Buffalo, an amazing harmonica player. And Mr. Rogers is also an expert at "insinuating" chords, playing only two or three notes, or even arpeggios, to inform the chords in the rhythm playing.

As a guy who predominantly plays rhythm rather than lead I have to say Roy's rhythm here is absolutely exemplary. What strikes me is his rhythm is stellar even when he's playing lead lines. The man's like a machine, but not in a sterile, clockwork way. He manages that great skill of being tight but loose, if you know what I mean. Too many lead players can get a bit sloppy with their timing when they take off with their fancy solos and breaks, but not this guy. Always bang on it, no matter what he's doing. Very impressive indeed.

Well, this guy is great, Do you now if this was the final take? It sounds like it has been mixed and mastered, great performance. I never saw a 12 string resonator. He sings too. His bass player is great, like he is watching Roy to see what he is going to play next. And the drummer is quite good also. As you said, he sings plus plays all sorts of lead fills or slide runs. I am definitely going to do some more reading about this chap. One sad thing the video shows is that you can be a super talented singer and guitarist, and not be popular.Jim

many people confuse them when they think Roy Rogers.
there's like when they watch NFL TV to hear James Brown it's not the James Brown you think of..roizen awesome Blues guitarists jam with Bonnie raitt many times and used to play with the late great Norton Buffalo one of the best harmonica players ever who we sadly lost to cancer few years back.

Hi Pegasus thanks for the like on my comment on the drummer. ( not that I am biased in any way lol )The base player is holding it . And Roy as we know is in a world of his own lol . My all time is Dave Grohl doing that double kick at the start of smell's like teen spirit just found your channel so I am subscribing .thanks

Ry Cooder is another master on the slide - he's got a more steely sound.
When it comes to slide, I'm not much into nuanced players because of the dynamic potential of using the slide - with a slide, the guitar is like holding a lighting bolt in your hands and having total control of it.
The dynamic depends on the on the slide weight and material.
Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Lowell George (dynamic players) used sockets, 3/4" and 11/16" about 2 1/2 - 3 1/5 ounces. Lowell George used a glass slide for acoustic.
I prefer a 1.5 cm. 31/2 ounce socket, but also like a thin glass bottleneck or triple chrome plated copper tubing for other sounds on a regular acoustic.
On the resonator, I like to use chrome plated copper.
The sockets are great for dynamic electric work - George, James, and Waters.
When I got into slide work, I built myself a diddley bow like the old Blues masters learned on and went up to a three string resonator I literally built out of junk I found in dust bins - great sound - cold, hard, stinging, steel.
If a person really wants to learn slide, listen to Mississippi Fred McDowell and start developing style on a diddley bow (it makes you concentrate).

no sir.. Lowell George and not use a glass slide he used a Sears Craftsman 13/16 spark plug socket.. he liked them for one thing all those years has now gone under Sears has lifetime warranty on their tools.
you can look at a video from Germany were Lowell even talks about it and demonstrates that along with his humor..he was pretty big tenant though you could definitely see but none the less it's a great one if you can find it Lowell George interview and you'll see him sitting with a guitar and a cigarette. but that's the only thing he never used a glass slide he always played with a 13/16 spark plug socket..back in the day when you can work on your own classic cars in the 50s 60s 70s 80s up until about the mid-nineties when you open the hood and see what the hell do I do with this and take it to the shop LOL
