The massager will still work lying flat. I would not suggest it though as you will be putting the weigh of your back on the rollers and I assume it is not designed to be used like that. There is no adjustment for gentle or deep massage. I personally find that the rolling function goes deeper than the shiatsu function.

They are fine for me as I prefer deep tissue massage.
